The Orange County-based Lively Ones were the kingpins of the whole southern California surf music scene. Driven by the riveting guitar work of Jim Masoner and the sexy, honking sax of Joel Willinbring, the band was virtually unsinkable. Self-penned tunes like "Goofy Foot" were every bit the measure of their cover versions (which often improved on the originals). This album highlights drummer Tim Fitzpatrick, who thunders his way through Link Wray's classic "Rumble," the Fireballs' "Ric-a-Tic" and a much improved version of the Tornadoes' "Bustin' Surfboards." A first-rate album from one of surfdom's top outfits. --Dave Provost --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2 out of 5 stars comme ci, comme ca.......2003-04-05

Plain and simple, this is repetitious, garden-variety surf music, and nothing more, done better by many others old and new.
Man Or AstroMan are nothing more than a novelty act with removable cogs; the band has changed personnel countless times, yet the sound remains the same.
There is very little variety in choice of keys (usually E or A-minor), little variety in tempo, and plenty of empty schtick; occasional sound effects, movie snippets, etc.
A better alternative might be Shadowy Men From a Shadowy Planet, a Canadian trio who are able to play the field alot better in the rock instrumental field, with more competent musicianship.
Granted, Man or AstroMan are not about musicianship; then again, they aren't about much of anything.

    4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2001-03-02

Man or Astro-man? has been making great surf rock records for years, and this one is no exception. It doesn't break any new ground, but it is quality stuff and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Get your motor runnin'........2007-06-24

Max Weinberg of The E Street Band and Late Night With Conan O'Brien fame compiled a series of CDs spotlighting some of his favorite rock drummers. This particular volume covers the 1960s. Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions, some important drummers had to be left out. So, there is no Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones), Keith Moon (The Who) or Benny Benjamin (Motown). But a CD shouldn't be judged by what ISN'T on it, it should be judged by what IS on it. And what is here is a bunch of songs featuring great drumming. Actually, these songs don't just feature great drumming; they are great songs PERIOD. This could almost be considered to be a "hits of the '60s" album, except the Moby Grape song wasn't a hit (although it should have been). Recommended to anybody with an interest in rock drumming, or even if you just want to hear some great songs from the 1960s.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series!! Why Out Of Print?.......2002-08-14

Max is bigger now than ever, and that's not even counting the new reunion tour with Springsteen and the E St. Band. This compilation of three discs, together with the accompanying (also out of print) book "The Big Beat", must have been a labor of love for Max. But it's also an ESSENTIAL part of the music collection of anyone who loves great drumming! Which has been kind of important in rock & roll!! So why did the record company drop this series from its current catalogue? The Big Five record companies are worse than the five mob families that once ruled New York City!

5 out of 5 stars Give the drummer some!.......2000-03-07

Finally a collection of songs that gives the drummer his or her due. The second of a three-CD series, proves that the 60s really rocked! A great collection of songs that blend across the boundaries of rock and R&B. Most interesting is the insightful and passionate liner notes written by Max Weinberg, drummer for Springsteen's E Street Band and Music Director and Bandleader for Conan O'Brien. The listener can feel the enthusiasm Max has for the subject matter and well, the music just speaks for itself! Great listening!

5 out of 5 stars Walk Dont Run!!.......2004-11-28

This CD remaster hosts two of the best Ventures albums in their catalogue. Walk Dont Run, (1960) and Walk Dont Run Vol. 2. (1964)

    Walk Dont Run:
One of the first albums The Ventures put out. It is good, but the band was just starting out, and their sound wasn't as tight yet.

Never-the-less this is still a supreme recording! Once the albums starts off, with Morgen, you pretty much know what to expect with the rest of the album.

This is rock and roll, when rock and roll was young. Many bands had not yet come out yet, and Elvis was still known as the King Of Rock & Roll.

Besides the original version of Walk Dont Run, some other great tunes that appear on this album are No Tresspassing, and the jazzy Night Train.

    Walk Dont Run Vol. 2:

With the success of their first album, and hit single, and surf music going all over the country, (originating in California) so The Ventures decided to do a surf version fo their successful classic, Walk Dont Run.

The result was a number 8 single. The Ventures remain the only band in history to have the same song, but in two different versions, on the charts when they came out.

Walk Dont Run Vol. 2 is the birth of a tighter band, due to the addition of drummer Mel Taylor, replacing Howie Johnson. Some classics on the album are, the new hard rocking Night Train, Peach Fuzz, their classic, Rap City, Lonely Avenue, Pedal Pusher and of course, Walk Dont Run 64'.

This CD is quality Ventures. If you love The Ventures, or any one of their recordings, you'll abosultely love this classic CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Recording!!!!!!!.......2004-03-30

The Ventures' drive changed with the addition of drummer Mel Taylor in mid 1963. His drumming made the group more hard rocking and energetic. Howie Johnson's good, but rather quiet drumming was the reason for The Ventures' slow paced and rather boring songs from 1960-63. This is why Walk Don't Run Vol. 2 is better than the first Walk Don't Run album. The first Walk Don't Run has some good heights like, Walk Don't Run, Night Train, and more, but Walk Don't Run Vol. 2 is absolutely a fabulous recording. The extraudinary Diamond Head appears on this album and so does the rockin' House of the Rising Sun and Walk Don't Run 64'. Some good rockin' hits like The Swingin Creeper, Peech Fuzz, Night Train, and Pedal Pusher also are included in this package. This album or albums are highlights of the Ventures' career and still remain a favorite of mine and yours.

    4 out of 5 stars Real Classics.......2003-09-03

This collection starts off a bit slow, but builds big-time: 3 versions of Walk Don't Run, including a 70's discoesque edition, and some newer material near the end. Very mellow, pure surf nostalgia. Can't really go wrong with the Ventures.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Recording Quality.......2003-08-17

I just got this CD and was quite disappointed. The song's of course are great, but the recording quality of this CD is horrendous. I ripped it to disk and analyzed it with Sound Forge and the right channel is highly clipped on many of the songs and that makes the stereo balance favor the right channel too much. I have the LP of Walk Don't Run Vol. 2 and except for the obvious record hiss and scratches, the sound is MUCH more balanced and clear on the LP.

If you can find these albums on a different label, give that a shot because this label definitely destroyed the quality!

5 out of 5 stars Run don't Walk for this CD.......2001-01-11

The VENTURES are the top selling instrumental group since the 1950's. They are also one of the most influencial bands of the rock era. While having great success in the USA, they are idoled in Great Britain and Japan. Many major guitarists of today trace their beginnings to the "Play Guitar With The Ventures" and these two albums.

The Original "Walk Don't Run" (the first album) is an adaption of a Chet Adkins song, (som of his early works are excellent) and was their first big hit, and caused a rapid succession of copy bands to follow, (Pyramids, Safaris, Challengers, etc). The Ventures were one of the few bands of the 50-60's to release albums of good material, versus one or two 45's with filler. Examples here include the cover of "Raunchy", "Honky Tonk", Caravan", "Night Train" and others

The second album is the Ventures caught at their best, this being one of a series of albums whose production and music where way ahead of their time. ( The Ventures albums "Knock Me Out", " Out of Space" and "Surfing" came at this time.

The new version of " Walk Don't Run '64" is excellent, wih a lot of bass, with a little bit of Phil Spector thrown in. "Diamond Head" is a classic Ventures song, and "Peach Fuzz" and "Pedal Pusher" show up under different names at different times on different albums. The originals are here. "House of the Rising Sun" is awesome, as I used to copy it when learning Bass Guitar.

THIS IS A GREAT DEAL FOR TWO ALBUMS, and is worth the price. If a serious collector, note this album as a major artifact of the rock era. Note this is not heard on radio anymore since radio oldies play the same over and over, and ignore anything not #1 or #2 or motown, (except the "Doo Wop" shows!!!)

If a younger buyer, play Smashmouth's "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" on their "Astro Lounge" CD. Take away the vocals and here the Ventures influence in 1999.

4 out of 5 stars Great surf instrumental... but look for the 2fer.......2005-05-23

"Surf Drums" was one of my favorite surf intrumental albums, right up there with Dick Dale's "Surfer's Choice," the Surfaris' "Play," and the Sentinals' "Big Surf." The Lively Ones' lead guitarist, Jim Masoner, while maybe not the most technically gifted guitarist of the era, played with as much energy as Mr. Dale himself. As a stand-alone album, "Surf Drums" is fine, but look for the package that pairs it with "Surf Rider" for the best value. For the music, I give this 4 stars, but it gets zero for the packaging. This and other Lively Ones collections have consistently misidentified several of these tracks. The running order on this CD matches that of my original vinyl LP, so with apologies to Johnny H. who tried to correct the running order, this is the TRUE track listing per the original album:

    1. Tuff Surf
    2. Ric-A-Tic

4 out of 5 stars another great surf album from Del-Fi.......2004-08-25

First off, it should be noted that The Lively Ones were a much better group live than they were in the studio. That being said, there is some great rock and roll on this album. To me, the only REAL rock and roll is old rockabilly and surf music. This is yet another great album put out on the Del-fi label back in the early sixties. Bob Keane, President of Del-fi Records, recorded a lot of young bands in Southern California. His first claim to fame was discovering, recording, and promoting Richie Valens. But he specialized mostly in surf music bands (The Lively Ones, The Impacts, Dave Meyers and the Surf-Tones), and what was called Hot Rod Music (with a bunch of studio bands that featured guys like Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell). If you like this kind of music, then this CD is a good one.

    3 out of 5 stars Surfs Up.......2004-04-29

This is a decent album by "America's No. 1 Surfing Band". They do a good job of covering some of the better known instrumentals of the period. They weren't too good at writing their own material. It's a pretty good album if you like surf music. One problem with the album is the songs are listed in the wrong order. Here is the correct track listing:

    1. Tuff Surf
    2. Ric-A-Tic
    3. Wild Weekend
    4. Surf Drums
    5. Shootin' the Pier
    6. Mr. Moto
    7. Bustin' Surfboards
    8. Stoked
    9. Surfer Boogie
    10. Rumble
    11. 40 Miles of Bad Road
    12. Hillbilly Surf

3 out of 5 stars For Ventures fanatics only!.......2000-06-10

This is an odd collection of Ventures tracks from the early 60s. In case you don't know, extended-play singles (EPs) were basically 7-inch, 45 rpm singles but with 4 songs instead of two. They often included a hit song of the very recent past and the rest would be filled with select songs off of the group's latest album. EPs were never really important to record-buyers in the US as in Britain and after the mid-60s the format basically disappeared. To a huge Ventures fan like myself, I was pleased that this collection of songs appeared like this. (The Beatles have a similar collection with all of their EP songs). Most of these songs are rather obscure - this is far from a greatest hits collection! Some of the songs are better than others. And the material varies too, showing you how The Ventures explored many different styles, from country (Ram-Bunk-Shush) to sci-fi (Telstar) to TV theme songs (Secret Agent Man, Man From U.N.C.L.E.). These guys are simply the masters of instrumental rock! The CD quality and packaging are very good - be sure to check out See For Miles Records' 2 LPs on 1 CD collections of other Ventures albmus available on amazon.com too! Also, if you're new to the Ventures or you just want the really well-known stuff, check out a greatest hits collection. If you're a completist and a Ventures fanatic, this is a good way to complete your collection. Enjoy.
