Before signing to Phil Walden's legendary jam-rock label, Capricorn, Chicago's Freddy Jones Band--so dubbed though no one in the band is actually named Freddy Jones--released this indie disc that introduced their likable blues-rock sound and roots-savvy ensemble work. Guitarist Wayne Healey's singing and Santana-esque lead guitar, as well as Rob Bonaccorsi's homey lap steel and slide accompaniment, bounce nicely against singer Marty Lloyd's gravely shades of Little Feat's Lowell George and Gregg Allman. With a palette of folky acoustic filigrees, echo-driven guitar lines, jazzy vamps, and sunny sing-alongs like "This Time Around" and "Peace by Piece," the Jones Band's debut is an accessible, middle-of-the-road rock record that nevertheless reaches great heights of focused musicality and honest American song craft. --James Rotondi

Great Album.......2006-11-02
I like this album more and more as I listen to it. It has stayed in my player all summer and isn't leaving anytime soon.
Love it!.......2006-07-02
I saw this CD at a friends house and asked about it, we put it in and I was blown away by "In a daydream". It took a while but
"Take the time" and others struck me too! I saw them in SLC at a private club. Man that drummer would smack the drums so hard...listen to the drumming and you can almost feel it!
BUY this !!! I had this as the number 1 CD in my car changer for about three years!
When you need to remember to live life........2005-04-06
When you need to remember to live life, you listen to this album. There aren't many albums that are in constant rotation at my house, but this is one.
Let me take you back in time. It's 1994 and I am moving from my home to a big new city to pursue a dream. An awesome friend of mine, makes me a tape of various songs. It included three from the FJB, her favorite band, she was a groupie. From the beginning the music was uplifting, full of great lyrics and incredible. From Take the Time, to One World and then of course In a Daydream. I was in tears. I was starting new. Powerful stuff.
Take the Time starts off asking, Where the hell are you running to? Try and find yourself a life. Look at yourself you're just standing still. And later, Tired of people talking about what they're gonna do or what they said or should have done. It commands you to take the time to look in front of you. It's full of great harmonies, haunting vocals and goosebump producing guitars. Seriously.
In A Daydream starts off with a great, catchy, loopy guitar riff. It's a song that will propel you forward in one of those days you just dream about. Warm, sunny day in the middle of nowhere. "The sky is calling, calling out my name." "I'm already in a daydream." The music, especially the guitar and bass towards the end, is meant to achieve the musical equivalent of a fantasy. It captures it.
The bottom line is that music, for me, is meant to take me away to another place or time. This album is timeless, deserved A LOT more recognition that it got and this band was just incredible live. In fact, much better live. Thanks to my friend 11 yrs ago for introducing me to TFJB. I am in Chicago now, too bad they aren't together anymore. But their music lives on forever.
A lover of "BLUES".......2002-10-23
I picked up the cassette of this at a tag sale! It is one of the BEST ever! I have been searching for more from FJB for months. Just found them (Oct 2002). It is amazing that they broke up. This is a MUST HAVE in your collection. I play it at least once a week. IN A DAYDREAM is wonderful. So is Dixie. They are all good. If you need a lift, this is the one to play. I cannot wait to get all the rest of their music.
A fan from Connecticut
This album is a classic!.......2001-12-05
"Waiting for the Night" is one of the greatest lesser-known albums of recent history. There are some really dynamite tunes on this album. The song that is the favorite of everyone who knows Freddy Jones is "In a Daydream." It's the kind of song that will pick you up when you are down, and keep you riding when you're feeling great.
It's really a shame that this band no longer exists. Somehow the music mainstream missed these guys, and they never really got the huge national following that they deserved.

My all-time "sleeper".......2005-09-24
I discovered The Freddy Jones Band back when "North Avenue Wakeup Call" was released. The alternative rock station in Boston had "Waitress" on their playlist and upon hearing it I was immediately intrigued. I purchased the cassette and was forever hooked! I must've played that tape more than any other cassette I had ever owned. The songs switch gears from ballads to rockers with an effortless, seamless flow .These guys display songwriting talents and musicianship that I find second to none. I feel that this CD could be re-released today and have a bigger impact. To me it's as relevant musically as any of the newer material I've listened to.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them play at a small venue in Boston and it furthermore baffled me as to why The Freddy Jones Band didn't attract more attention and the recognition that they obviously deserved!! To this day I can't figure how this band wasn't a huge success!
Why am I only the second reviewer?.......2005-09-08
10 years ago, Albany, New York had a creative and independant radio station-WXLE. The listener was guaranteed to hear music not played on the other tight listed mainstream stations in the area. It was on this station that I was introduced to FJB. WXLE is long gone and so is FJB but in listening to North Ave Wake Up Call, the excitement and the flowing energy of the music is still so present. It's like listening to the best elements of the Allman Brothers and Little Feat with in my opinion better vocals. The music is so positive and life affirming with incredible mastery of the lyrics and the instruments. Say, maybe that's why they didn't last.
So Talented.......2005-02-10
It'll be a while until you hear another group with this much talent... They're a rare gem that never hit the mainstream and maybe that's what keeps them so special in the fan base that still exists even years after they broke up.

I've seen the Freddy Jones Band play live in Chicago and Milwaukee several times and have always had such a great time! This CD reminds me a lot of hearing them play. If you're a fan of FJB this one's for you! The version of "In A Daydream" on this CD is my favorite version ever.

A great beginning.......2000-02-17
If you're looking for the album that wraps up the Freddy Jones band in one nutshell, this is it.
A great mix of both studio and live cuts that give you a great feel for their sound.
If there is one drawback, it would be that you really have to be in the mood to listen to this album. A few of the tracks can drag on a little, and Wayne Healy's guitar can get to ear-piercing pitches at times. A little too much edge, that the band learned to lose in their future releases.
If you're a fan of the Allman Brothers, and are looking to diversify your tastes just a little, give this one a shot.
One Word- AWESOME!.......1999-11-29
That is just it. This Cd is awesome. No other one word in the English language can describe this music so well. If you love Widespread Panic then you will go crazy over the Freddy Jones Band. Their music is true. The tunes like Stepping Stone and In A Daydream will become instant favorites. They are relaxing, invigorating, or just plain awesome.

The best band nobody ever heard of.......2006-10-12
I exaggerate, but having discovered FJB back in 1999, I still find myself listening to their music over and over. This album is a great introduction to the band for new listeners. Most (all?) of the tracks are from previous releases, but all are worth a listen. I do prefer the studio version of Daydream, but that's a minor quibble. This is one of those very few bands that comes along in a lifetime, where I can recommend them without hesitation to anyone, and know that they will not be disappointed. I found a link online to FJB's website, and was able to get an autographed copy (two, actually) of this CD. Now, I either need to move back to the midwest, or hope they release a concert DVD. Buy this album! Heck, buy ALL their albums! You won't regret it!

The Chicago quartet here serves up its Allmans-lite-style grooves in a consistently pleasing manner, the only difference from past efforts being that they finally show their stuff in a concert setting. Recorded during a 1998 West Coast tour, FJB's first live effort is loaded with spirited versions of fan favorites such as "In a Daydream," "The Puppet," and "One World." Fun jams and plenty of the usual digital delay on the guitars rule the day. An interesting cover selection would have been nice, but even without it A Mile High Live will surely appeal to fans. Newcomers might even want to start with this one since it's essentially a greatest-hits package with extra flair. --Jason Pascal
Customer Reviews:
A Good Show.......2001-05-09
This recording follows the Freddy Jones Band during their seventeen-stop live tour of the West, starting in Chicago, and ending in, my hometown of, Denver. The songs that appear on this album are a collection from their previous four albums played in several different cities. This is another band that has changed from their start years ago, maybe not for the best, but definitely not for the worse either.
The first couple of songs on this album are throwaways. The band sounds lackluster and flat in their tunes of "One World" and "Better Tomorrow". With each song thereafter, the tunes get better as if the band knew what they were doing when they laid out this album. The version of "The Puppet" that appears on this album does not compare to the live version off their first album, but still stands on it's own as a good piece, different, but good. It also marks the turnaround in this album where the songs get better. The last part of the album contains their most energetic songs.
Overall, the album is good; especially if you're an FJB fan and enjoy the way the music has changed over their four albums. There is no canned music from the originals as the songs differ from extended soloing to a complete change in sound. "Texas Skies", my favorite FJB, loses its country feel and takes on a rock flavor, while "Take the Time" turns into a nine-minute jam fest.
Besides a few flat sounding songs, the only other complaint I have for this album is that the long intros to the songs are gone. Several times during the live show, the band would segue songs with a long intro that touched on their own musical heroes. Unfortunately, this album sounds like it will be the last of the FJB, for at least awhile, if not longer.
sad attempt.......2000-06-02
I will have to agree with others on this one. if you like hte Live cuts on the rereleased first FJB CD, then you may be disappointed with this one. After losing 2 of their members a few years back, the band has never been the same live in concert. Wayne tried to make up the lost acoustic/slide guitar by pounding out riffs loud and hard. Good guitar playing but just doesn't do justice to the songs that once were... I was in love with original 5 piece band, the sound, the harmonies, the intricacy of it all... every man played a big part in the songs. Now it isn't the same since the two left. A vital part of the band to sound as tight as they once were, get the brothers back. Save your money on this CD, go to their website and get boot legs from fans there for free.
Find a good bootleg.......2000-03-28
Not very good sound quality. Its great to hear them live but....
You're better off find a good bootleg........2000-02-17
This is without a doubt the Freddy Jones Band's worst release. Not even a year after the band had lost two of the original five members, they tour with a replacement bass player, who just could not fill the shoes of their original. This left a huge whole in the backbeat that lead guitarist Wayne Healy tries to hard to fill with his lead guitar, and just can't pull it off.
Barring a couple of exceptions, the live versions of their songs on this album lack emotion, creativity, or a powerful drive. It isn't even mixed very well.
If you were impressed with the live tracks on the FJB original release (as I very much was) prepare to be sorely dissapointed.
the album is great mix of songs that show the talent of FJB.......1999-10-08
This album definitely showcases one the best bands around. The jamming songs of "Take the Time", "Waitress", and "Wonder" mix well with mellow songs such as "Into the Wind" and "Texas Skies". The guitar work and lyrics make this CD a great one to listen too over and over again. There are a few songs that could have been added to this CD but overall it is worth every dollar!!!

Though they hail from the northern reaches of the Midwest, the Freddy Jones Band plays a brand of rock more typically associated with Southern outfits such as the Allman Brothers and the Dave Matthews Band. Even in their more standard bar-band mode, they come off as slightly funkier, more vocally accomplished version of Hootie and the Blowfish. Geography be damned, however, Lucid brings together some of the rootsy group's best musical elements, including the memorable melodies and high-harmony arrangements of "Wonder" and "Better Tomorrow." "Mystic Buzz" is a little more sonically far- reaching, while "California" proves the band knows its way around a lush ballad. All things considered, Lucid is the Freddy Jones Band's most impressive effort since their self-titled debut. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-02-02
Freddy Jones Band offers more of a rock feel on this album than their self-titled debut and their career-defining Waiting For the Night. Still in their prime, Lucid was a solid album, in many ways more lush and mature than any other of their albums. Opening track Wonder is the clear standout on the album, and many of the earlier tracks became standard fare on the groups live tours, even today as the group tries to resurrect itself. Later tracks a good deep-cut listening for the hard-core FJB fan. As is usual with the band's albums, while Rob Bonacorsi is hardly the star of the band, he is consistently the tasteful guitarist that gives FJB a special tone. While the band never topped Waiting for the Night, Lucid is a solid album by any right and worthy of anyone's collection.
The Legend of Freddy lives on.......2003-03-19
If you are unfamiliar with FJB, get this album, it is quintessential. I know many will maintain that Waiting For the Night is the best, but I'm not looking for roots, I'm looking for creativity and evolution in a band. It is a modern tragedy that the Freddy Jones Band broke apart, but their legend will live on in albums that bring you back to heart of music.
Rehashed Freddy Jones Band.......2000-02-17
Although a decent albums, its plagued with a few songs that are barely worth listening to. Of the seven or so remaining tracks that are good, only about three of them are great, original tracks. The rest sound too much like old rifts and beats recycled with new lyrics.
Not a bad album altogether, but I wouldn't buy this album unless you're already an FJB fan, and feel like you need more.
Watch out DMB here comes FJB!.......1999-11-05
WOW. That about sums it up. If the Freddy Jones Band gets a break, then they will be HUGE. If you like Dave Matthews, Guster, or Blue Traveler then FJB is right up your ally.
An Outstanding Acoustical Album.......1999-09-13
If you like guitar-acoustical music, then Freddy Jones Band is the CD for you.
