5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS VERSION!!!!.......2007-03-04

Admittedly, I was not to fond of this CD when it first came out since it was such a departure from the Pulp of His n Hers and Different Class. There were a handful of very good songs but I felt the best song on here didn't reach the level of the worst song on the previous 2 albums. Time has been kind to this album. The deluxe edition has been even kinder. Knowing the background on the album and what was going on at the time this album achieves brilliance yet totally redefines Pulp. When I first had this album I'd say there were songs I would skip repeatedly. This IS Hardcore would be one of them. Now, I find every song wonderful. I really do believe it just came out at the wrong time under the wrong expectations. The second disc is a surprise since it consists of a lot of demo's. Due to this I wasn't expecting much. I had already heard all the B-Sides and knew they were good but the demo's i figured would be ok at best with not so great sound quality. I was wrong on both accounts. The sound quality is fine. Hardly a demo in my book. The songs itself are good be why the album failed on first released. They were the bridge between the 2 albums. If included the album may have gone over better on it's initial release. Even though I adore this album now this is NOT the first place you want to start. Start with Different Class knowing it is the best album they've released and then go back and get His N Hers and Hardcore. I warn you to not go any further back in their catalouge. Sorry, what I have heard before His n Hers is really not that good. Now, if I would only get the deluxe editions of His N Hers and Different Class that I ordered 2 weeks ago!!! I'd be in heaven.

One last thing. This is the LAST Pulp album. We do not want to discuss Tree's or Weeds or whatever that wreck was called. Do yourself a favor and just buy the Bad Cover Version single and say that was the last thing Pulp ever did. That album will leave you wondering, "what happened?"

5 out of 5 stars Here comes The Fear again..........2006-09-04

Despite the critical acclaim and feverous fan acceptance, Pulp's 1998 masterpiece "This is Hardcore" failed to build on the momentum that started with their landmark 1995 album "Different Class," and it will be remembered as Pulp's arty career-killer. If there ever was an album that proves that commercial success and quality of output don't always meet, this is it.

I was a diehard Pulp fan in the 1990's, and I especially remember the excitement of this album being released in April 1998. After buying "Different Class" on cassette and listening to it repeatedly (the tape actually broke from so much play), I was expecting the new album to be more of the same. That is was something totally different became apparent from the opening bars of "The Fear." "This is Hardcore" was (and still is) a dark, textured, and pessimistic album about aging, loss, and failing hopes. If "Different Class" was the all night party, "This is Hardcore" is the morning after. But the strength of Pulp has always been in Jarvis Cocker's songwriting, which makes this album actually stronger than it's predecessors.

The unquestionable standout tracks are "Help The Aged", the first post-DC single about Jarvis hope for the world to be kind to him as he grows older, "Party Hard," which is perhaps the most rocking of the album tracks, and the title track - a glorious 7 minute track about...err...pornography. Lyrically, these songs are among the strongest that Pulp has ever produced. For people hoping for more DC-like material, tracks like "Sylvia," "I Am a Man," and "Glory Days" are excellent rock songs.

Despite the failure of this album to break the bank, Universal has seen it fit to release it as a deluxe, 2 CD special edition, along with Pulp's two previous albums. The extras are contained on the second CD, and it's a mix of B-sides, demos, unreleased songs, and alternate mixes. The standouts are the excellent "Cocaine Socialism", "Like a Friend" (from "Great Expectations") and the fantastic "Tomorrow Never Lies" (a b-side for "Help The Aged") Most of these deluxe releases contain plenty of filler, but the Pulp re-issues are the exception. This new edition is well worth the extra cost.

"This is Hardcore" is the album the separated the true Pulp fans from the casual listeners who dug "Common People." It is a challenging, complex, and criminally underrated album that is well deserving of a deluxe re-issue. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surreal, intriguing, excellent music and recording.......2004-12-27

listening to the music is like enjoying the beautiful surreal movie once again without seeing it. The more I listen, the more I love it - it's the Amercian Dream story, it's the Iggy Pop music, it's the Johnny Depp narrative make it a valuable collectible CD. This is a new version, the recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2003-09-02

This is the album that sounds even better without the Movie.
Goran Bregovic mixed traditional european Folk music with more modern styled instrumental and rock music.with this mix and his talent to make a moving and touching songs he created a masterpiece, delightfull voyage to teh darkest and most mysterious places...Goran added sytnhs, bass, delicate guitar (simmilar a bit to mike Oldfield),and a massive wall of drums...Check out "Dreams","Old home movie","Gunpowder","Dreams" and a huge hit "Tv screen" with Iggy pop on vocals.Definitly one of my Desert-island albums,a must have for all instrumental music fans and for everyone as well!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Versatile Composer.......2003-06-30

As most fans of Bregovic know, he is a versatile composer who blends well contemporary music technology with traditional flavors of eastern European gypsy and still manages to remain above the par of the usual techno-studio corporate music that attempts to stamp the "World Music" label on its own concoctions. "Arizona Dream" doesn't disappoint even the hard to please of Bregovic fans.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is Shelby Lynne- The Best of the Epic Years.......2006-08-18

I would rate this CD very high. Her cover on "Little Bits and Pieces" is absolutely tops. I have this song by Wayne Newton also and Shelby can sing circles around him on this song. On "If I Could Bottle This Up" her duet with the Great George Jones is simply superb. The other duet she does with Les Taylor "The Very First Lasting Love" is great too. But I can't leave out one of my favorites on the CD and that's "Don't Get Around Much Any More". I simply do not understand anyone who did not like this whole CD. I love her voice and think that the music industry is loco for not recognizing what a great talent she is.

1 out of 5 stars Not a big country fan.......2004-10-23

Seeing Shelby on a TV spot convinced me that I must have some of her music. This album may have her classic background, but is nothing like her current sound which I think is great! This can be skipped by anyone who doesn't really like country sounds. Maybe this is the reason her new album is titled "Identity Crisis" - nothing like her old stuff. Sorry, buy the new but pass on this expensive oldie. (PS, I also like her new hair style better :-)

    5 out of 5 stars a must have!.......2003-10-10

culled from the "epic years" this is an absolute gem of material and vocal technique. if you have any of her earlier recording(s) (i had "tough all over") and enjoyed them/it, you will be enthralled by this release. a five star collection!

5 out of 5 stars Don't shun this Shelby retrospective!!!.......2001-04-29

Last year's 'I Am Shelby Lynne' got lots of attention as she twisted and turned once more to establish a winning commercial identity that she, too, was happy with. But maybe she was too chameleon-like on that album. This compilation from her time with Epic in the late 80s/early 90s illustrates what she was unhappy with in Nashville: the accompaniment and arrangements rarely move beyond cliched expectation. BUT the blandness of those serve as a foil for her amazingly expressive voice. The material is excellent, too, which suggests she must have had a big hand in the choice of repertoire. But I come back to the quality of voice - Shelby's most natural voice, I suspect. For me, she's not singing at her best on 'I Am Shelby Lynne' but, ironically, she is here.

Original London Cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

4 out of 5 stars ATTENTION !! ALL MOTOWN ADDICTS .......2007-01-16

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST COLLECTIONS TO COME OUT OF THE MOTOWN VAULTS IN A LONG TIME. IT WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED ON THE DEBUTAUNT LABEL IN THE 90's.
I WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT IT ON MY OF MY TRIPS TO N.Y.C.
I DID CARTWHEELS OUT OF THAT STORE !! HOWEVER I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT SOME OF THE TRACKS WERE OF POOR SOUND QUALITY.

THAT'S WHY I THINK THIS RE-RELEASE IS SUPERB, EVERY TRACK SOUNDS EXCELLENT !! RIGHT FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER !!!!
YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO MISS A CHANCE TO GRAB THIS ONE !!!

4 out of 5 stars Good value 2CD.......2006-03-09

This attractively priced 2CD replaces two separately issued CDs that appeared on the D?butante label in 1997 and 1998. The title of this reissue is slightly confusing as the original releases were called This Is Northern Soul Volumes One and Two.

They were much heralded at the time as several of the items had never been officially released before, but were well known from the clubs, where scratchy acetates and treasured bootlegs had been played to Northern Soul fans. While the sound quality was obviously better on the CD releases, and the general availability much welcomed, some of the tracks had clearly been transferred from vinyl pressings and some of them were in reprocessed fake stereo.

For this reissue on the Motown label, through the Universal Music Group, only the original Detroit analogue masters have been used for the digital remastering. Reprocessed stereo has been quite rightly eliminated and there is thankfully no vinyl surface noise, representing a significant improvement for most of the tracks. The Temptations' previously unreleased Forever In My Heart was included in the speeded-up master used in the clubs before and is now restored to the proper speed, as found on their Lost And Found CD, and The Andante's (Like A) Nightmare, which had surfaced briefly as a V.I.P. single in 1964, is ten second longer than before (but check out the extended stereo remix on The Motown Box). Carolyn Crawford's lovely single, written and produced by Smokey Robinson, also gains a couple of seconds and is now cleaner sounding. Frank Wilson's Do I Love You (Indeed Do) was in a great alternative stereo mix with a slightly different vocal to the familiar single, and remains so on this.

Mostly, however, the remastering and cleaning up has left the tracks slightly shorter than before. Brenda Holloway's previously unreleased Lonely Boy had been allowed to run until only the funky bass line was left in the mix - now it fades a full ten seconds earlier. Her other two tracks Think It Over and When I'm Gone both still appear in mono mixes in preference to the stereo versions on the subsequently released Motown Anthology set; this is also the case with the three Kim Weston tracks. Conversely, the Velvelettes' Lonely Lonely Girl Am I and Bird In The Hand are in stereo mixes that do not appear on their Motown Anthology double CD. The Detroit Spinners' What More Could A Boy Ask For now clocks in at 2.29 whereas before it was 3.08. The Isley Brothers' Tell Me It's Just A Rumour Baby, recorded in 1966, is now a mono mix lasting 3.08 whereas before it was in stereo and of 2.50 duration.

The Marvelettes' classic I'll Keep Holding On, with a lead vocal from the great Wanda Rogers, is also the well-known original mono mix, though I believe a stereo version has been released somewhere. The Gladys Knight track No One Could Love You More dates from 1967, but was extracted from her 1971 album Standing Ovation for a UK B-side a couple of years later. She can sing just about anybody under the table and all her three tracks are wonderful. Junior Walker's I Ain't Going Nowhere was another popular UK B-side. The oldest recording in the collection is Linda Griner's Goodbye Cruel Love, recorded in June 1962 and a single for Motown in 1963.

Virgil Henry's You Ain't Sayin' Nothing New may be the most recent, but is a bit of an oddity, having been originally released for Jerry Ross's Colossus label as a flipside (Colossus 115), and the same single coupling appeared on Tamla 54212F in 1971, possibly remixed, while Jerry Ross was briefly Berry Gordy's New York A&R man. The mastertape was in less than perfect condition on the 1997 release and is not improved here. Some collectors believe it to have been recorded in New York with local musicians as early as 1966 and this is the publication date given here, though it sounds more recent. The Temptations' I Gotta Find A Way comes from their Norman Whitfield-produced Cloud Nine album of 1969 but had been in the can since October 1963, so dating a track can be problematic.

As always, the music is of the highest order and fully recommended, and only the more avid collector, of which there are many, will be concerned with the specifics detailed above, which are not annotated in the sleeve notes.

4 out of 5 stars Gonna to be a rock star.......2006-06-08

I owned Go for Broke first and this is not a carbon copy. Real talent does not rip off or re-hash existing sounds, riffs, melodies, and such. The variety of the sounds we get on this second album tells me that this guy's got some talent..

First of all this is more a 2k rock album and there seems to be less hip hop. GFB leaned heavily on a hip hop lyric delivery and had a more of a hip-hop theme to it. Kazzer's delivery here has a bit more "in your face" and the guitar riffs feel heaver, more pronounced, and tighter. There are some good guitar solos that are not on his first album.

Kazzer's vocal delivery is also more in line with what we're hearing on the radio today without the sticky sweet commercialism and without the ranting drone.

Most of the tracks are solid rock tunes. The ballads (if you can call them ballads) have a unique grooving quality that keeps them crossing over to cliche'.

You can tell this is a second album on a few of fronts. It's more polished, a bit tighter, certainly more mainstream (or maybe less cross over). If he keeps it up, and has a good promoter, he will no doubt see greater commercial success.

5 out of 5 stars Why hasn't anybody heard of this guy yet?.......2005-11-29

I've been watching the Speed channel's Sports Car Revolution for a few seasons, always loved their theme songs, "Fueled by Adrenaline" and "Pedal to the Metal" but just recently realized that Kazzer was not only a co-host on the show, but he is a rock star. I decided to take a chance on this one and I'm glad I did. Good stuff. So good that I immediatley bought his debut CD "Going for Broke" as well, though I'm slightly dissapointed with that one.
