Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars D-Train.......2005-06-24

I recently had the pleasure of meeting D-train about 2 months ago at a club in New York and I can honestly say that he hasn't lost his touch. His sound today sounds much better than it did in the 80's!

D-train Lives On!

5 out of 5 stars An essential for any 1980s urban R&B fan!.......2003-09-14

James "D-Train" Williams was one of the 1980s very best male R&B singers yet he never really received the acclaim and recognition due him. This CD has most of the big hits from 1981-85 but it should have included the ORIGINAL version of "You're The One For Me" (not the 1985 remix!).This CD is nonetheless a great compilation and is indispensable for any 1980s urban R&B fan.

4 out of 5 stars Take the "D" Train.......2001-04-18

If you want to see some of your older cousins, uncles and aunts party,(40 - 50 yr old group), Get this CD. You will see more people imitating the Soul Train line than doing the electric slide! If you are in the mid-thiries range (like myself), you are going to join in.

Your'e the One for me has to be the all time ghetto jam! Everyone in NYC played the hell out of this song. And since we have a "D" Train line here, we represented to the fullest!

Keep On was great, talk about motivational, this was way before Iylana Vanzant!

If you want another good back in the day music collection piece, buy "Best of the 12 Inch Mixes" - D. Train.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars "Just a basic energy"--Man Shake.......2004-02-06

This CD is an interesting set of songs for Culture Club fans who did not collect all the B-sides and 12" singles. Some of the remixes are excellent, especially "It's A Miracle/Miss Me Blind" and "I'll Tumble 4 Ya." Captain Crucial appears on the "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" 12". The B-sides are also quality material. "Colour By Numbers" is rather drab yet pleasant at times, but "From Luxury to Heartache" is excellent (better than some of the tracks that made the album by the same name) and backup singer Helen Terry kicks big time fanny on "Man Shake." "Love is Love," which was released on the Electric Dreams soundtrack, is wonderful and if you have never heard the instrumental version of "Time," you need to buy this CD right away. That track alone makes this collection worth your time. It is absolutely beautiful. The only track that is a waste here is "Black Money." It is just the version off Colour By Numbers which most people already have. I would rather see "The Crying Game" on here to complement the 12" Boy George solo "Everything I Own." Unfortunately, this collection was put together a couple years before the soundtrack. Still, unless you already have all these tracks on their original records, this CD is a must for any Culture Club fan. The CD booklet also includes interesting notes on each of the tracks. Note: I notice some of these B-sides are being released on the remastered CDs of the albums so, if you plan on buying them, you may want to hold off on this CD until you know if all these tracks are included on the remasters.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the mixes..........2003-12-29

I own several of the "music-released-beyond-the-albums" material on CD and on vinyl, and I have to say this is one of the best. As a Culture Club fan of 20-plus years, I find myself still listening to this CD in my car and I never grow tired of it. There have been quite a bit of "re-released" compilations, and some are just down right annoying, but this is something with a great groove (they MUST have pumped the bass and drums on some of these tracks since the originals). This CD does not just include Culture Club's top 40 stuff, but gives a true overview of what the entire band (not just George solo, although I like his stuff too) is really capable of--GOOD MUSIC.

3 out of 5 stars There are two variations of this collection.......2002-09-18

Well I have one of the variations and I like long versions of them hit tracks (which are many) so the shorter ones are.. ok
no one can have ever missed "Miss Me Blind" ,"Karma Chameleon" & "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" the classic mixes.
All those new versions my apply to the dance floors but to have the real nostalgic sound I prefer the original album & 12" mixes.
Call me oldfashioned but remixes can be good & bad depending who speaks their mind. Giving it 3 is minus for the missing track listinigs on this one & lack of any information at all. Makes hard choice for customers to buy it ;).
---- Still I cannot see the tracklist on this one !? ----

Almost forgotten till you hear the grooves from the Strikers. It's just a matter of time till you hear these sounds again cause today's dance culture is full of this kind of Jazzy and Funky music.
especially 'Body Music". In this song you hear all the stuff that todays dj's are using. But call it 'Forgotten Dance Classics". 'Strike it up" was a floorfiller in the early 80's. I'm hungry for this beautifull funk, hungry for more.

With countless forms of reggae bubbling up and into the public's vision, roots reggae has almost been forgotten these last few years. Perhaps that's what makes this assembly of extended versions, dub mixes, and alternated takes so refreshing. Led by Joseph Hill, a vocalist whose main objective is to integrate his sly, liquid voice into the very fabric of the music, Culture's reggae is no-nonsense, and for the most part, bare bones. Even their dubs are remarkable, stripped of the techno bells and whistles so prevalent in dub today. Culture have never been about flash, and on Production Something, flash is never missed. Not even for a second. --S. Duda

This is another Culture album that's better than the more widely acknowledged Two Sevens Clash, even if each song wasn't a blend of my two favorite Reggae sub-genres, roots and dub.

        4 out of 5 stars Largely Unheralded...but Essential.......2005-02-15

This is my favorite Culture album and one of my favorites of any artist or genre. The only thing I could fault is some of the sound quality is sub-par on a few songs, but this is not unusual for some of the older reggae albums. The music, all heartfelt and deeply spiritual, is backed up by the Joseph Hill's powerful lyrics. Songs like "Too Long In Slavery", "Children of Israel", "Trod On", and "Black Rose" are genuine rasta anthems and the balance of the songs are all fine examples of Jamaican roots reggae...making this an absolutely essential addition to any reggae collection.

4 out of 5 stars Culture discomix galore!.......2003-03-03

Six of these nine tracks dubbed by Errol Brown at Treasure Isle. Chris Wilson remixed tracks 1, 3, and 6. Every track is excellent, and extended. There's almost 70 min of music on here!

Garvey is probably better known as "Down in Jamiaca", and is, in my opinion, the best discomix on this release. Dog a Nyam Dog is a close second however. The title track boasts a competent DJ toast by Joseph Hill himself.

Note that if you have already bought "Trod On", you will hear considerable track duplication here...

        5 out of 5 stars excellent CD.......2001-04-30

5 out of 5 stars They Might Be Giants.......2000-02-20

Sparks has provided some absolutely amazing music over the years, and this collection of "12" mixes" provides a fascinating glimpse of some of the Mael Brothers' substantial talent. This is a far less extensive collection than the awesome Rhino collection released in 1991 ("Profile: The Ultimate Sparks Collection," which contains 40 songs on two CDs). Nevertheless, the brilliance of Sparks comes across - their ability to put just about any subject into intelligent words with a great beat and sound. These geniuses are fun, fun, fun!
