A Classic!.......2007-07-02
This compilation cd is a great collection of Santana favorites. The instrumentals only feature lifts these recordings from a 60's/70's, etc. retrospective into a terrific adult contemporary classic.
Santana The Best Instrumentals.......2007-03-19
This CD has a number of Santana's classic hits like Samba Pa Ti, Flor de Luna, and Soul Sacrifice that I really enjoyed, however, in my opinion those are the only really good songs and this is a mediocre album.
Best Instrumentals.......2006-11-06
This is great collection. This is the flavor of Santana I enjoy most.
From the inside!!.......2005-08-20
This is a very good compilation of only instrumentals by the master. My only regret is that "Every Step of the Way" from "Caravanserai" is missing. That is one of the most powerful Santana songs ever. Also, my favorite in this compilation is "Aquamarina".
Just the music.......2005-01-09
There are many great guitarists in the world but only Carlos Santana can move me like he does. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Europa is easily the best instrumental number ever and I would argue one of the best songs of all time. It is perfectly married with all the other great Santana numbers that were usually the best thing on their respective albums.
Put this on, turn the lights down low and lose yourself in the music.

Terrific collection.......2007-05-21
This was one of the first George Benson CDs I bought, and it was a great pick. At the time, I didn't know he made so many great instrumentals, but this CD quickly got rid of that! There's not a bad song on here, although the first five are especially enjoyable and the live version of "We All Remember Wes" was very good as well.
Well-received gift.......2007-01-09
This CD was a gift for a guitarist and Benson fan. He loved it.
Elevator Music.......2005-11-26
Don't be fooled by the reviews. If you're looking for some jazz, don't buy this album. This is a CD of easy-listening music. If you're looking for some jazz guitar, check out the early CDs like George Benson Cookbook or the stuff he recorded with Brother Jack McDuff. I guess this stuff is okay to put on while watering the plants, but there is no substance to this ear candy. What a waste of talent. And George QUIT SINGING YOUR GUITAR SOLOS. It's bad enough that you sing, but singing during a solo just diminishes both the singing and the guitar playing. YAWN!
This CD Comes With Memories To Have And To Hold..........2005-01-15
In my opinion, "Breezin'" is the ultimate and the most precious of all George Benson's gems, and the most stunning track on this compilation CD. I remember the way my sister Debbie and I were 'going nuts' over this melody when it first came out in the late '70s and played the album (original platinum selling "Breezin'") over and over and over again and would repeat the track "Breezin'" quite a number of times that it must have broken our late father's turntable needle! (Deb, you remember that, don't you? And you were just too scared to tell Papa about it since he had been telling us to handle it with extra-care because the brand he used was so expensive and precious like diamonds!) Listening to this CD brings back a lot of memories and it's like being on a 'sentimental journey' to the past with my sister. (my sappy eyes, please behave!).
"Breezin'" was the first album that got me hooked with the music of Mr. Benson. My sister and I collected most of his earliest albums. My sister stopped collecting several years ago but I remained the 'faithful fan' to this day and continued with my collection. I always enjoy listening to his kind of music. I truly believe that he's one of the greatest and polished guitarists of all-time and an awesome vocalist as well.
A good friend of mine who has an impeccable taste in music and an extensive musical knowledge who also plays the guitar has the following reflection on our mutual favorite, George Benson, and I quote:
"George Benson is the best 'flat pick' guitarist who ever lived -- his single note sequences are better jazz than Lenny Breau, but he looked up to Lenny as the greatest all around finger style guitarist who ever lived. His "Tenderly" is the best flat picking solo of all time I'd say -- I saw George perform at a Town Hall in Bermuda in the '70s, just as "White Rabbit" LP was making him a star and his own composition "Ode To A Kudu" is the finest 'live' performance I have ever heard by any guitarist bar none."
This compilation CD consists of some of my cherished melodies of all-time, and it's a testament of Mr. Benson's mastery of guitar. The tracks I love the most next to "Breezin'" are "Tenderly" from his 1989 album of the same title, "My Heart Is Dancing" from "Love Remembers" album in 1993, his very own composition "Weekend In L.A." from his 1978 album of the same title, "We All Remember Wes," a Stevie Wonder-penned-bubbly- melody, Jose Feliciano's "Affirmation" from the 1979 album "Breezin'" and one of his original compositions "Mimosa" from his 1987 album "Collaboration" (with another guitar virtuoso, Earl Klugh).
This CD is a must-have and has the greatest collection of the best instrumentals ever recorded in the history of jazz. You should listen to it, and thank me for it! It's absolutely a gem!
Awesome!!!!.......2004-01-19
George Benson is truly one of the best!! I am new to jazz music (plus I am getting older) and while my taste in music has changed (for the best). I still know good music when I hear it, regardless of the genre. So when I say this is an excellent album for old and new jazz fans...Trust me!! This cd helped bridge me into Miles Davis and others, but is still old school enough to be real. I love this cd and you will, too.

a great surf rock starter.......2007-06-11
If you are to buy only one compilation of early surf rock, this is it. Essential. Use it to soundtrack your low budget horror movie!
Another Trip To Meeksville.......2007-05-08
This compilation covers Joe Meek's productions involving instrumental groups and pieces. And you get a stereo mix of the classic "Telstar" to boot plus other unreleased sides. Of course anything involving Joe Meek can involve anything from great to completely horrible but this set is mostly decent throughout with just a few clunkers I choose not name, you have to decide that for yourself. Also included are thorough liner notes with information about the tracks and the groups. So if you a fan of the Shadows you will definitely like this.

Early Work from a Master.......2005-01-21
Leo Kottke is to the acoustic guitar what Hendrix was to the electric: when he burst on the scene with his debut Takoma album, "Six- and Twelve-String Guitar" in 1969, he redefined both instruments. This collection presents the best instrumentals of his earlier Capitol years (and in my opinion, all his albums up through the live "My Feet Are Smiling" are true classics). Omitted is his notorious "geese-fart" singing voice, a foghorn baritone that I didn't find as bad as reputed, though I still have always been partial to the instrumentals. This, and the companion "Chrysalis Years" volume, have been released by his current label, Blue Note, and they are both essential, especially if you don't have any Kottke in your collection. If you don't mind the geese farts (and he did record some pretty good songs with vocals, too), you may want to check out "Essential Leo Kottke" on Chrysalis (there are only a few common tracks with the new "Instrumentals" CD), or the excellent 2-disc Rhino collection, "Leo Kottke Anthology". Only the last one, by the way, contains any material from his Takoma debut.
Kottke at the Top of His Game.......2003-12-31
The 18 tracks on this hour-long CD are taken from the six albums Leo Kottke recorded for Capitol from 1971 to 1975, arguably the most productive five years of his career. While they are all instrumentals, they are not solo in that Kottke works with other musicians on about half of these tracks. It does not, however, detract from his guitar playing being prominently featured.
Kottke pays homage to John Fahey on a couple tracks: "Poor Boy" and "In Christ There Is No East Or West," which are the only two non-originals on the album. The latter is a special favorite of mine. Other standout tracks are the gogeous "Owls," the live "Medley" which concludes with the furiously-paced "Jack Fig," and perhaps one of Kottke's loveliest melodies, "Mona Ray," where Kottke is accompnaied by Michael Johnson.
While I have long been a fan of Kottke's rich baritone voice, it's nice to have this collection of instrumentals. And unlike the Chrysalis collection, there is no new material here. Just Kottke playing the hell out of his guitar. And when you stop to think about it, isn't that enough? It is for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
One of our greatest instrumentalist doing what he does best........2003-02-13
Leo Kottke's "6 and 12 String guitar" fell to earth in 1969 and some of us have never been the same. The album became know as the armadillo album because of the cover art and put both Kottke and his label, Tacoma, on the map. In the liner notes on the album, Kottke describes his voice as being similar to "geese farts on a muggy day". After the armadillo album, Kottke would for the most part ignore his own advice and feature vocals on most of his songs. The compilation of instrumentals from 1970 -1975 when Kottke was recording on Capitol is the brainchild of Jerry Roche who apparently agrees with Kottke's original evaluation as do I. These are tracks compiled from Kottke's Mudlark, Greenhouse, My Feet Are Smiling, Dreams and All The Stuff, Ice Water and Chewing Pines albums. It show off Kottke in a fair number of settings including solo, accompanied only by dobro, pedal steel, bass or guitar. It also has him in trio and quartets settings. For my ears, the fewer players the better. The sound of what Kottke is doing with his six and twelve strings, with his flatpicking, fingerpicking and slide is all I really want to hear. The man is an orchestra unto himself.
He is also a wonderful writer who has created almost his own genre of music, a personal blend of country, folk, jazz, blues and classical.
If you have never heard of Kottke, please go directly to the armadillo album. You will name children after me, I promise. If you already have that then this CD and the second volume are a great addition to your collection.

An EXCELLENT Zydeco CD!!! Wish I could give it 10 stars........2002-02-10
This CD has awesome music on it!! I visit New Orleans every now and then and love walking through the French Quarter and hearing zydeco music pouring out of the open doors to the clubs. This CD brings me back there even when I can't physically travel there. If you're looking for a CD to commemorate your trip to New Orleans, THIS IS THE ONE!! It's sold in most of the little shops, but try the one right across the street from House of Blues -- they had it for less than the other stores were selling it for.
memories of New Orleans.......2000-11-24
While walking Bourbon St.;we were drawn to a gift shop, by the most wonderful, happy, feet stomping music we've ever heard. We were delighted, when the owner said we could purchase the disk. After we returned to Pennsylvania, we bought several other Zydeco disks, only to be disappointed, when compared to The Zydeco All Stars. We highly recommend this disk. Joe @ Marcy Eckley

Feel Good Music.......2001-07-07
My dad recently introduced me to James Last's recordings when he received a video of a James Last concert from a PBS station in Florida. Now we're both hooked. The music James Last creates is simply "feel good" music - you cant help but feel good when you listen to him. I have this CD and also "Country Roads" & they're both excellent. I can't wait to purchase more!
What can I say? James Last is the best!.......2001-06-06
James Last's arrangements of some of the most popular somgs of the last century are among the finest available. His own compositions, such as 'The Lonely Shepherd', are also among the most beautiful ever written. 'Biscaya', 'The Lonely Shepherd', 'Happy Heart', 'Games That Lovers Play'... great listening. Period.

All these tunes are familiar to Kottke fans; what justifies owning this the very last song: Leo playing a 12-string with Albert Lee's 6-string on "Little Martha." The song has been enriched with a 16th century Elizabethan feel that would be complimented by a harpsichord.
Otherwise, this is the joy of hearing Leo just letting his fingers dance over the strings as he does his best stuff--and as he's so fond of pointing out, no singing allowed. "The Fisherman" (originally on '6 and 12 String' and live on 'My Feet Are Smiling') is now revamped. The only irritant is "Whine," which lives up to its name as Leo blares like an overloaded PA system on electric slide. As an addition to your finger-picking collection, you've got to add this CD.
Just Kottke and His Guitar.......2003-10-26
This is a solid overview of Kottke's tenure with Chrysalis between 1976 and 1983 after he left Capitol. [Check out his equally stunning collection of instrumentals on THE BEST OF THE CAPITOL YEARS.]
While there is a tendency to focus on Kottke's lone Takoma album and his Capitol albums as being the best of his 30-plus years as a recording artist, this entire album is a delight. All six of his Chrysalis albums are represented, including four tracks from his 1980's LIVE IN EUROPE. As an added bonus, you get two previously unreleased live tracks from a 1977 Montreux contert: "The Fisherman" and "Uptempo." In addition, there's a studio version of Duane Allman's "Little Martha," which was recorded for 1983's TIMESTEP, but omitted before its release.
Also worth noting is that the compiler of this CD went out of his way to avoid duplicating the 1991 Chrysalis compilation ESSENTIAL. In fact, "Airproofing" is the only repeated track.
While I'm also a fan of Kottke's warm baritone voice and could easily argue a case for an album of vocals ("Learning the Game," "Sonora's Death Row," and "Here Comes That Rainbow Again" are favorites of mine from this period), this is a highly enjoyable album of what Kottke does best--play the hell out of his guitar. [Running Time 53:43] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
A great instrumentalist doing what he does best, Part 2.......2003-02-13
This CD has just been released with a companion volume The Capitol Years, 1970-1975. Please see my review of that CD for some of the background on this project. This particular CD is a compilation of Kottke's instrumental work from his recordings on the Chrysalis label from 1976 to 1983. The songs are drawn from the albums Leo Kottke, Burnt Lips, Balance, Live In Europe, Guitar Music (one of his few CDs that only features his guitar playing) and Timestep. Three of the songs were previously unissued. They include versions of The Fisherman and Up Tempo from a 1977 Montreux concert and Duane Allman's Little Martha.
Unlike the Capital volume, the Chrysalis compilation is almost entirely solo.
On any Kottke album there is always jaw-dropping guitar, the sort of effortless virtuosity that both inspires and discourages other guitar players. There is innovative technique and melodic passages that you will never forget. One of the things I like about this album is the chance to compare how differently Kottke played The Fisherman on his first album, Six and Twelve String Guitar in 1969 and this 1977 version. This version is less propulsive with the attack not being as hard. The result is revelation of another whole side of that delightful tune. These are great compilations and we owe Jerry Roche and Blue Note thanks for bringing them out. If you are a Kottke fan who primarily loves his instrumental stuff (like me) these will be great additions to your collection.
