Ripped off?.......2007-06-21
I waited with great anticipation for this cd which was not available to the loyal fan until recently. The title cut has always been one of the best rock songs ever recorded. When I received the cd, I was quite surprised to see that there were only 7 cuts and one of the cuts I expected to see was missing: Moontears. This song was played with Back it Up and Beggar's Day on the King Biscuit Flour Hour on WNEW-FM years ago. In addition, WRNW, played the authorized bootleg on an early Saturday morning Nils focus. What happened A&M? Are we to wait for the sequel? I feel that this was not the right way to release the cd with any song missing! Has A&M done Nils wrong, again?
Lost recording found!!.......2007-05-23
I recorded this performance from a live KSAN radio broadcast in San Francisco in 1975 (on my 8-track tape deck!!!). I wore the tape out over the next 3 - 4 years. (Also recorded early Tom Petty from the same KSAN broadcast series... wore that one out too.) It's great to be able to hear this again. It's stood up well to the test of time and is probably one of Lofgren's best recordings.
Hallelujah! The Holy Grail on CD .......2007-04-20
Six stars! In 1975 the vinyl version of the album (rare as hen's teeth even then) was my introduction to Nils Lofgren, and has remained one of my top ten albums of all time ever since.
Odd tracks from this have filtered out on compilations, but finally we have the full show (or at least the original radio broadcast - no bonus tracks, so I assume there was nothing else in the can). No matter. This is rock'n'roll perfection, the version of "Like Rain" here being arguably Nils' finest recorded moment.
Can't wait to get my hands on this.

Customer Reviews:
I got a kick out of this one.......2004-07-26
This two CD compilation makes for an interesting package. One Step Up is a collection of new (1997) covers of Springsteen tunes. Two Steps Back is older covers recorded by a variety of artists over the years (the earliest from 1974.) Each set has some high points worth a listen and more than a few clunkers. The fun of this type of collection is that Springsteen's songs can hold up to different arrangements and occasionally someone makes these songs their own.
One Step Up:
The good ones-
Okay, time for a sacrilege. I think John Wesley Harding's cover of "Jackson Cage" beats Springsteen's. He seems to capture the pain and suffering so much better by stripping the song down to its basic elements.
John Hiatt- Totally rocks "Johnny 99." This is why I buy these things. Some artists can really make these songs into something brand new.
Dave Alvin- I really like the reason he chose "Seeds." He makes it work.
Joe Grushecky- Has a lot of fun with one of Springsteen's minor tunes "Light of Day."
Marshall Crenshaw- "All or Nothin' At All" Puts a little rockabilly swing to it and it works just fine.
Ben E. King- I never would have put this song with this singer. I'm glad they did.
Misfires-
While I wouldn't say I hated anything on this CD; there are a few errors in judgment. Syd Straw's vocals on "Meeting Across the River" just does not convince me. Did she listen to the lyrics? Martin Zellar shouldn't have aped Springsteen so much on "Darkness," and I'm not really sure what Mrs. Fun was shooting for on "Janey, Don't you lose Heart," but if it was "lounge singer" version they achieved it.
Two Steps Back:
The good ones-
Elliot Murphy- does a nice job on "Stolen Car," adding a wistful quality to the vocal that Springsteen doesn't quite achieve on the original.
Robbin Thompson- Throwing in a rocking Gospel sound and a decent instrumental break, Thompson just kicks it on "Guilty."
Southside Johnny- Just as good as the Boss himself, with those Miami Horns raising the heat even higher.
Richie Havens- "Streets of Philadelphia" is a perfect fit for his particular talents.
The rest is OK; ranging from the bizarre (Bowie on "Saint in The City") to the curious (Covers by France's Little Bob Story and Italy's Rocking Chairs) Even The Knack don't embarrass themselves. The only truly terrible song here is the "Disco Bruce" of Donna Summer. Man, this one's just painful.
It's a mixed bag like all compilations, but I'm glad I got it.
It's A Springsteen Summer!.......2004-06-16
I LOVE Bruce! He is the best. No one has really mentioned this though: The most interesting cover on this collection is Protection by Donna Summer with Bruce on guitar and background vocals. There's supposed to be a duet of this with the two of them, which I think must have been killer. In any case, it makes you wonder what future collaborations between the two could bring about. WOW!
Bruce Lite, which can be a good thing.......2003-12-14
Bruce is Bruce and obviously I love Bruce or I wouldn't have bought this thing. It's just very interesting to hear these versions of some of the smaller elephants in Bruce's zoo.
Almost every song here the vocals pull back from Springsteen's vocal approach, which is so often self-conscious and self-important.
It's a little breath of fresh air.
I can't believe nobody else mentioned Nils' version of "Wreck on the Highway". So far, it's the most arresting thing here.
On a side note: who are these people?
I don't know who "Aram" is but he does a superb version of "Something in the Night". Really turns the song inside out, but it's still completely the same song.
Anyway, there's a lot of good stuff here. All in all, it's more like a 3.5 than 4.
Interesting revisitation.......2003-03-19
I looked over the reviews of this CD, and I am surprised that the version of Darkness is not mentioned. Nor is the Smithereens version of Downbound Train. These are my favorites. I don't know who that is singing Darkness, but it is a standout on this CD. Worth the price just on its own. And there is plenty of other music contained within this CD. I'm listening to it right now, and I can tell you that I listen to it over and over.
Springsteen fans and just good Rock and Roll fans get this one.
Springsteen is a great storyteller and this will allow you to listen to his stories from another perspective. Excellent.
One or Two gems, but only Bruce can sing his music..........2000-07-07
Not a bad album, just for the majority of these songs Bruce does it so much better that there hard to listen to. Some good songs: Atlantic City by Kurt Neumann, Jackson Cage by John Wesley Harding (excellent, dare I say better than Bruce's version?), Janey Don't You Lose Heart by Tina & The B-Side Movement, 4th Of July, Asbury Park is different but good, Ben E. King had to really work to pull off that one. Stolen Car by Elliott Murphy is decent, Love's On The Line by Gary U.S. Bonds is really good, The Fever and Seaside Bar are not too bad. Interesting to hear If I Was The Priest, but to hear the best version of it listen to Before The Fame as the Boss can only sing it. The real gem of this album is Jackson Cage by JWH. Would love to hear him cover more Springsteen material if he can take an average song by Bruce's standards like Jackson Cage and make it sound like a classic. The album will really only appeal to Springsteen fans mostly, and even then it's hard to hear other people sing his songs.

Album Description
Public Library is the new album by singer/songwriter Jonathan Rundman. The album's thematic centerpiece is the power-pop vocational anthem "Librarian" where Rundman claims the role of musical bibliotechician, gathering works of fiction, non-fiction, news, and history and presenting them in rock & roll form for access by the masses. "I bring order out of chaos, I shine light into the dark," Rundman sings, "because power comes from knowledge just like fire from a spark." Rundman's precision with melody and wordplay have been the foundation of his music throughout his career and Public Library continues with more of the same, although with a richer sonic backdrop thanks to producer Walter Salas-Humara of The Silos.
The album opens with "Smart Girls," Rundman's most radio-worthy recording yet, where he raves about the female intellect over huge guitars and grooving drums. Functional romantic relationships are celebrated in the rollicking "747s" and the lovely "Falling Down". Ecclesiastical architecture is the unlikely focus of the observational rocker "Narthex." The geography of the American Midwest has been a recurring image throughout Rundman's repertoire, and he revisits it here in the ominous "Almost Never See" and the mysterious "Park River Bridge."
Political and social issues are also explored throughout the album. "The Serious Kind" has folk-classic potential, and it sums up the troubling realities of the post-9/11 world with simple elegance. Rundman sings "Second Language" from the perspective of a teenage immigrant girl over the pulsing of a string quartet. In "Cuban Missile Crisis" Rundman uses the precarious Cold War conflict as the setting for a love story, with eerie parallels to contemporary global events. The album closes with an exhilarating acoustic jam session "Every Town's the Same" where Rundman details his past few years as a folk-rock troubadour facing the cultural phenomenon sociologists call "placelessness."
Customer Reviews:
Not Another Mass Produced Bubble Gum Pop Album.......2005-11-04
In today's world of mass-produced bubble gum pop recordings, Jonathan Rundman shines out as the artist that he is. With simple elegance and wonderful music and wordplay, he can address the issues of every day life, rave about the importance of intellect in finding a mate, and address social and political issues that affect every single person in this world. His music and songs are original, tactiful, and very catchy. It's a great break from the normal mass-produced music that's heard almost every where today.
Public Library is a Must Have.......2005-07-31
This is my favorite album of the past year! If I were to describe Rundman's music, he really is between Jonathan Richmond and Todd Rundgren (alphabetically and musically).
Impressive release with songs of varied styles.......2005-02-06
Minneapolis artist Jonathan Rundman scores big here with "Public Library". The lead off track is memorable, as much a lesson in love as it is an obvious tribute to a "smart girl" in his life. "Falling Down" is a soft rocker that results in something that an Owsley, REM, XTC collaboration would have sounded like. "Narthex" is a folksy tune with a sticks-in-your-head chorus and grinding guitar while "747s" is a fun country-boogie/bluegrass number with twangy vocals in place. This is an impressive release with songs of varied styles.
McKenna's Jonathan Rundman Album Review.......2004-10-22
IT'S AWESOME. This guy can really write some good music. take a listen here at amazon or you can go to his webpage at: www.jonathanrundman.com or to his record label webpage at: www.saltlady.com. take it from a jonathan rundman fan such as myself buy this album.
OUTSTANDING!!!.......2004-10-05
I never heard of Jonathan Rundman before I heard "Public Library," but after hearing this CD, I'm surprised he's not very well known. This CD is amazing, and it sounds better with every listen. The lyrics are incredible (and funny!), the music is top-notch, and this has to be one of the best CDs of the year (really!!!). I buy a lot of CDs for people as gifts, typically more obscure artists, and this CD will definitely be given to many friends of mine in coming months. "Smart Girls" and "Librarian" are two of the highlights of this CD, but it is consistently excellent.
