Customer Reviews:
Woody's winners are THE winning ticket !!!.......2007-03-20
This CD offers some of the very best songs and instrumentals that Woody Allen used as musical backdrops in several of his movies. We get excellent tracks from Radio Days, Stardust Memories, The Purple Rose Of Cairo and other Woody Allen films as well. The quality of the sound is excellent even on my portable CD player; and Woody's music reflects his exceptionally good taste in distinguished musical standards.
The CD opens with "Frenesi" by Artie Shaw & His Orchestra. The strings and horn carry most of the melody and whet your appetite for more. "Stardust" by Louis Armstrong & His Orchestra follows; and Louis and his musicians bat this one right out of the ballpark! This was recorded in 1931 which gives us a chance to hear a younger Louis Armstrong; his voice sure was gravelly even then! SMILE
Other great standards not to be missed are Duke Ellington's "Take The 'A' Train" with a magnificent musical arrangement that really swings hard; "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" by Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra from the movie Radio Days and Glenn Miller & His Orchestra perform a heavenly "The White Cliffs Of Dover (There'll Be Blue Birds Over)."
Fred Astaire sings "Cheek To Cheek" with great sensitivity and panache both at the same time; Leo Reisman & His Orchestra provide the musical accompaniment for this number. "I've Heard That Song Before" by Harry James & His Orchestra shines brightly on this album; this song is especially elegant with its wistful, sweet sentimentality and a flawless musical arrangement. Helen Forrest sings the vocals with flair and a certain grace that I rarely hear. Moreover, "After You've Gone" gets a somewhat bluesy feel for its intro but it sparkles as brilliantly as it ever did. The horn is great and Jack Teagarden sings this ballad without a single superfluous note.
The CD ends fittingly with "Goodbye" performed by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra; this bluesy number clandestinely sneaks into your heart as it captivates you with its beauty.
The liner notes include the song credits and the cover art work has a great rendering of Woody's face on the front. There is also a brief essay about the musical performances in Woody Allen's movies.
One reviewer notes that the final musical piece from Stardust Memories cannot be found on this album. Unfortunately, even a CD chock full of winners like this one just can't hold all of the great music Woody used in his movies. This is why I recommend other Woody Allen film music two CD sets including the set simply entitled Film Music and the two CD set entitled Woody Allen music from his movies.
I highly recommend this CD for Woody Allen film buffs; and people who enjoy the standards with that unforgettable big band sound will cherish this CD for quite some while to come. May you get this CD and enjoy it as much as I did! Enjoy!
Perfect except for ONE PIECE!.......2004-06-08
This CD is absolute perfection, but WHERE, oh, WHERE is the Dick Hyman recording of "Easy to Love" played at the end of "Stardust Memories"???? It's achingly beautiful and the one Dick Hyman recording I have of it isn't the slow, sensual version of it. PLEASE someone, let me know! (Woody, are you listening?)
Have a listen at Woody's impressive record collection!.......2003-07-10
Whether out of interest in Woody Allen movies, or perhaps a desire to listen to some supposed cinematic jazz, you'd be hard-pressed to ignore the fact that Woody Allen has great taste in music. This is quite a diversified sampler of the big-band (and not so big-band) jazz and swing music from the 1930's and early 1940's that Woody has intimately incorporated into his films over the past 30 years. What sets this apart from other big-band jazz/swing compilations is knowing this is not just a greatest hits compilation but rather a journey through someone's personal record collection. Nearly half of the music is (obviously) cued from "Radio Days", but there are also songs from the films "Stardust Memories", "The Purple Rose Of Cairo", "Manhattan Murder Mystery", "Celebrity", and "Sweet & Lowdown".
There are many other Woody Allen jazz compilations of similar quality, but with 20 songs clocking in at 70 minutes, this album is clearly the most generous. It showcases the clean and busy work of the famous orchestras of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Benny Goodman. There are gentle vocal efforts as well; Fred Astaire sounding lighter-than-air on "Cheek To Cheek", a young Frank Sinatra swoons and croons "If You Are But A Dream", and Billie Holiday coos through "Did I Remember?" The wacky but clever instrumentals "Big Noise From Winnetka" and "Sing, Sing, Sing" also appear, as do some absolutely sweet & sublime guitar playing from Django Reinhardt on "Body And Soul", which pairs him alongside an angelic string quintet. The notable omission is, of course, Glenn Miller's classic "Moonlight Serenade", a song worthy of including in a 20th century time capsule. None of the tunes here come off as the loud, brash variety - shrill but blazing horn sections, basically - that you may be accustomed to hearing elsewhere.
The music on this compilation seems paradoxical. These songs are timeless in their craft & charm, and yet they can transport you to an era you may have never experienced but suddenly feel very comfortable with. Every song sounds so sophisticated, lively & tasteful, and yet it's all so mellow and easy-to-swallow. This music will work both for dancing on Saturday night and for coffee & toast on Sunday morning. If you'd like to examine Woody's equally appetizing sense of classical music, I suggest "Woody Allen Classics", which offers healthy samples of Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Puccini, Gershwin, and Prokofiev.

These guys are on their way!!!!!!.......2006-08-12
Out of California comes a band Called Hypnogaja. Out Burn Magazine calls them "Entralling, first rate modern rock." & The Denver Post says "Pushes Boundries" also MTV has Picked Up their Video called "They Don't Care".
Below Sunset" is a great album for many reasons. It takes the listener on a journey - a trip that transcends the boundaries of the rock genre without alienating anyone seeking music that has appeal. The melodies, lyrics and performances all work together to create a tapestry that is consistently satisfying throughout all of the songs.
Hypnogaja is able to connect with the listener on a level that is far beyond that which many bands are ever able to achieve, without the air of pretentiousness that usually surrounds such high brow artistry. Thus, "Below Sunset" works on a plane that is both larger than life while still capturing an incredible sense of intimacy.
Rockers like "They Don't Care," "Misery," "Normal On The Outside," "Scorned" and "Put Your Hate On Me" all have an epic quality that urgently encompasses aggression, passion and frailty. Textured compostions such as "Looking Glass" and "Silver Star" showcase ShyBoy's sterling vocal abilities. And in softer moments such as the beautifully arranged "Wash It All Away," and the stunning piano ballad "Quiet," one is shown the true breadth of Hypnogaja's abilities. A highly recommended listening experience.

just got my copy in the mail - so many good songs - love "looking glass" and the eurythmics remake, "here comes the rain again" - such an awesome version! this band will go far - great, great music!!

Brilliant.......2005-06-08
This album is amazing. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it. There are so many songs that I absolutely love, that speak to my soul. The vocals are breathtaking, so full of power, emotion and different colors. The fluid, theatric quality of the arrangements really supports the intelligent lyrics. Aggressive. Melodic. Dramatic. Moody. Breathtaking.
good album.......2005-06-07
I purchased this album and at first was dissapointed a bit. But as I listened to it it really grew on me, the first three songs are excellent but the real jewell is song 9-trully a great song...........these guys are good, hopefully they will get the recognition they deserve

Get the box set.......2003-01-07
All of these tracks are re-recordings Miller must have made later in life. The problem is that there is no disclaimer so that the consumer isn't aware of the this until you get the disk home. The box set, The Genius of Roger Miller, is the real McCoy. My recommendation is to spend the money and get the box set.
You'll be happier with an earlier release.......2001-11-30
Disappointing from first track to last. All the spice is gone.
For example in Dang Me, the words: "lack nineteen dollars of having" are all the same note, and spoken, not sung. Apparently his vocal agility was gone. In the same song, "high from the highest treeee-YEEE!" - the high-pitched "YEEE!" on the end is gone.
The same thing in "Chug-a-lug". There's no uplift at the end of "hi-dee-ho". Still a pretty good song but just doesn't sparkle.
The spice in a Roger Miller song is that he transitions from high to low and back, or the reverse. On this disc he might transition up or down, but not back, and that makes it dull.
I give positive points for the collection of songs which is excellent for the price.

NIce Balance.......2007-03-11
I bought it specifically to get "Liar Liar" but was impressed with the blend of songs. You won't see The Beatles, Bob Dylan or The Rolling Stones here (and 1965 was a great year for them) but the songs that have been selected were top hits that year and certainly representative of what was going on then. I am particularly impressed by how many hold up 42 years later!

Customer Reviews:
Music for mean streets.......2007-01-19
This CD contains all the great Film Noir themes you'll ever need and then some. From Alfred Newman's majestically Gershwin-esque opener "Street Scene" (which graced a number of movies including the distinctly non-noir "How To Marry A Millionaire") through to the pared-down jazz of Bernstein and Katz's "Sweet Smell of Success" this is a guided tour down the dark alleys and mean streets of the music that soundtracked some of the greatest monochrome crime movies of all time. The music, by it's very nature, is intense, urgent, overwrought and nervy and you may find the album a hard one to listen to in one sitting but, boy, does it make you want to re-watch those films! Sound quality is very good and the liner notes - which include brief plot summaries for the films - are snappy and informative.
Note: My CD has 31 tracks and not 33 as listed here. "White Heat" is included but missing (presumed omitted on release?) are "Murder, My Sweet", "The Chase" and "Scene of the Crime". For a correct tracklisting see the product details on Amazon.co.uk.

chicken or the egg.......2007-07-11
not knowing that much about harum and reading all these great reviews i thought 36 tracks for $10 + $3 s&h, why not. when i listened to disc one i thought i should of spent my money elsewhere.disc two was different. i listen to disc two quite a lot. disc one: 2 stars. disc two: 4 stars for a total of 3 stars.IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF SIXPENCE sounds a lot like the kinks' WHEN I TURN OFF THE LIVING ROOM LIGHT. ABOUT TO DIE sounds a whole lot like e.l.o.'s MAMA. the vocals on MONSIEUR ARMAND sound a like a dave davies solo album track backed by the kinks some where around 1967 or so.
Beyond All These Things.......2006-04-28
What Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville were to the unbridled optimism of nineteenth century American literature, Procol Harum was to the delirious idealism of flower power hippie-dom that bloomed ever so briefly in the late `60s and early `70s. They were the fly in the ointment, the ash in the soup, the reminder that even the sunniest day is followed by night.
It seems particularly appropriate that they traveled under a curse throughout their career. The song that gave them a career in the first place, A Whiter Shade Of Pale, also destroyed their career, causing the public to marginalize everything that came later and dismiss them as a "one-hit wonder." This was the public's loss; Procol Harum was one of the most sophisticated, intelligent, original groups to emerge from a decade overflowing with musical talent.
I had the pleasure of seeing them perform and their intensity was hair-raising. Not only did they burn the house down, they played with the discipline of a string quartet. Procol Harum's frequently plaintive sound, the combination of Gary Brooker on piano and Matthew Fisher on organ, topped off by Brooker's vocals, was instantly recognizable. But more important still was the band's secret weapon, lyricist Keith Reid. Reid's lyrics, at times so vivid they seemed carved out of his own flesh, were invariably smart, compelling, and piercing.
This superb and reasonably priced 2-CD anthology travels far and wide through Procol Harum's first four albums, including A Salty Dog, widely considered their high water mark. There are also many bonus features to delight the connoisseur including previously unreleased singles and alternate takes. Too many highlights to mention but a few gems do jump to mind: Wish Me Well, Juicy John Pink, A Salty Dog, Pilgrims Progress, Your Own Choice, Homburg, and A Christmas Camel. The world of rock is replete with hacks and poseurs; these guys were artists of the first order. Repent Walpurgis.
the under-dogs .......2006-02-13
procol harum will always been remembered for that one hit
that sum up everything for any love bird's yes you know that song "whiter shade of pale" that organ based song that has swamped procol harum ever since..it's such a classic yet procol harum went and made some of the finest and hillarous tunes my 19 year old ears have had the pleasure to hear and nowdays in the charts it's mostly pretentious c*** so it's why i've gone back to the good old years when rock and roll meant something than other of makin' a quick buck it had a message a beat and a sound that can't be heard today
procol harum made that sound and they made it damn good NO excellent
either going from that hit single i won't mention it again
lime street blues[fantastic lyrics great solo]
hombug[beautiful piano]
seem to have the blues[mostly all the time]
etc...
so let me put the record start procol harum weren't just a one hit wonder for the love birds to get their clinches on the disco floor
they made classic songs alright
So close! (put thumb and finger one millimeter apart).......2004-07-02
Let's face it - Procol Harum is not for everyone. However, if you like them, then this CD seems to be a good value.
It has nearly all of "A Salty Dog", so it is worth the price right there. Plus much of "Shine On Brightly", and with "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Conquistador", this compilation covers all the bases - except one ----->> Devil Came From Kansas (the missing millimeter).
Sound quality is a little harsh as it is late 60's-to 1970 music for the most part. However, Robin Trower had his strat moaning, Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher had the keyboards going, BJ Wilson was banging the drums and the various singers were belting it out some great lyrics - though no one had a really great voice.
The 2-disc set includes a booklet of liner notes on the represented albums and included songs. At one point it refers to Procol Harem of 1968 as "expanding upon their symphonically influenced bombastic rock style", and the fantastic 1969 album "A Salty Dog" as "combining a synthesis of high-energy blues and grand classical-inspired influences..." Yeah, whatever :-)
A possibly better choice is another inexpensive 2-disk option called "The First Four", which is the complete first 4 albums. The trade off is that though it has the complete "A Salty Dog" album (with "Devil Came from Kansas"), "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is not included as it was released as a single, and only subsequently re-released in the USA on the original album (re-titled "A Whiter Shade of Pale"). However, the fourth album ("Home") is rather lackluster.
Some great music.
Excellent Music, Super Value For Your Dollar.......2003-07-30
Having long since decided that the "30th Anniversary" box was a little more than I wanted (both in terms of quantity and price), I went out and bought the expanded version of "Procol Harum...," and figured I'd eventually have to do likewise with the following three albums. Then I stumbled upon this release, couldn't believe the low price, figured there must be a catch--but ordered it anyway. I'm here to tell you all: Ain't no trick here, just treats! Surprisingly, though the band's terrific debut album's widely considered one of their best, a full five of its tracks are not represented on this collection in any form, so having that album is still advisable. Otherwise, the "Shine On Brightly," "A Salty Dog" and "Home" albums are all majority-represented here, along with a handful of rarities; B-sides and previously unissued out-takes. A few notes not pointed out by previous reviewers that you may be interested in: First, the stereo version of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" is NOT the same version as the classic single; a completely different take. On its downside, the drumming's not nearly as powerful or fill-driven, but on the upside, this one goes on a good minute-and-a-half longer than the single version. Second: The alternate versions of "Conquistador" and "She Wandered Through The Garden Fence" are both in true stereo, and are actually very close to the album versions: Therefore, much moreso than with "Whiter Shade," these tracks provide a pretty good blueprint for how the first album would sound were it ever mixed to stereo. Outside all that, just a few of my personal favorite tracks are the outstanding single "Homburg," the fairly psychedelic "Shine On Brightly," the moody ballad "Too Much Between Us," and the delightfully morbid "The Dead Man's Dream" (cosmic coincidence, perhaps, that that song and Bloodrock's masterpiece "D.O.a. came out at almost the exact same time.) In fact, listening to that and several other songs on this collection, it occurs to me that Keith Reed had a penchant for dark, foreboding and sometimes diabolical lyrics--enough to make Jim Morrison sound like a minstrel boy. Anyhow, if you're looking for a great collection of early, golden-era Procol--and great bang for your buck, this is the collection you want--in which case, I urge you to click that Add To Shopping Cart button today!

This is praise of the artists present here.......2006-06-04
These songs are originals done by the original artists and it wonderful. As for the the comments that the artists that are not 'southern' for the most part is fine, but what rule or LAW is there to say that a band may not play or play homage or just enjoy the southern rock style if they are not from the south??? IMAGINE if we applied that to all types of music - might as well get rid of all the music because it all breaking this LAW... Maybe we can apply this so-called rule to all areas. THIS CD IS VERY GOOD. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not "Southern" Rock.......2005-03-09
Let's not forget that George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers use to be "The Delaware Destroyers" because they're from Delaware!
Over 60% Southern Rock!.......2004-06-30
I almost bought this album for the sheer insanity of the title.
In additon to the three songs that "A music fan from Souderton, PA USA" was kind enough to point out were from foreign countries, the following songs also seem to be literally "out of place" for a "Southern Rock" album:
a) China Grove by the Doobie Brothers of Oakland, California.
b) Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf of Los Angeles, California.
c) Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh of Ohio, Colorado, and L.A.
d) We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad of Flint, MI.
By my calculations, 7 of 18 songs are from bands outside the Southern U.S. but pehaps the producers figured it like this:
"China Grove" is a Southern song because it is about a place in the "Lone Star State," so that's in. "Born to Be Wild" is a rebellious number and they like that rebel attitute in Dixie, so that's in. BTO has the letter "T" in it like the song, "Gimme a T for Texas/Tennesse," so that's in. The Southern-based bands on the album are American, so "We're an American Band" is in.
Now, I couldn't figure out how "Rocky Mountain Way" or "Hair of the Dog" fit in, but then I'm not an in-bred mountain man nor do I have a brother running the game in Flordia to count for me.

misleading title.......2003-05-01
It's a good enough selection of songs, but I guess Southern Rock means anything south of the North Pole, since there is music by Free (British), Nazareth, (Scottish), BTO (Canadian) and some American music that can hardly be considered as "Southern Rock". There are tons of good southern rock songs that must be available for this type of CD. I don't know who thought up the title, but I want an ounce of whatever he/she was smoking.

Bad Trip--- Not the Original Hit Song Arrangements.......2006-07-28
These are NOT the original tracks that we all heard on the radio. They sound like primitive rehearsal tracks with marginal singing, bad orchestration, and different arrangements.
Do Not Buy This CD --- or on second thought, please buy mine.

Mixed Bag of Old and New Versions.......2004-07-05
This CD seems to be a combination of old and new versions of some of B.J's great songs. B.J. Thomas has an incredible voice when at his best, and had the knack of selecting wonderfully melodic songs with great lyrics, especially throughout the 60s and 70s. Unfortunately the new recordings on this CD lack the energy and sincerity of his originals, both in terms of B.J's vocal performances, and in regard to the arrangements. Why you would want to change such gems as this man's originals of
NOT "All original recordings".......2003-05-30
Well, I'm writing this review AFTER I got my CD, and I'm really unhappy. It says, right on the cover, "All Original Recordings." Baloney. These are not the original recordings, but re-recordings done later. There are obvious differences in Thomas' vocals, the instrumentation, etc. Is it badly done? Not necessarily. I suppose if you're a die-hard B. J. Thomas fan you'll find this a decent set of alternate recordings for your collection. But if you want the original songs you do not want this CD. My review and rating are based solely on this CD not being what it claims to be. For shame.
If it's by B.J. Thomas, it has to be great!.......2001-05-28
I am writing this before I even receive my CD. He has been one of my favorite singers for over 20 years. I have all his old records and want to get a started on a CD collection. This will be my first selection. I can't wait to receive it!
