If you're expecting the Monkees, Paul Revere & The Raiders, or even the 1910 Fruit Gum Company from "Extra Chewy," head elsewhere. Gum Machine trips lightly from Chicago blues to power pop to rock balladry on their latest offering. Several of the cuts on "Chewy" are familiar to Machine fans and bootleg collectors, including the splendid "Back Door Man" and the infectious "Sinkin' Like A Stone" and "Wish I Knew," which nearly qualify for chestnut status, having been longtime staples of the band's live performances. Among the new cuts, "Wind In The Trees" is a particular standout, with an instantly sing-alongable chorus and towering haunt count. At the risk of overusing simile, "Chewy" maintains its flavor right to the end, with "Only Lies" and "Anymore" providing more of Machine leader and tunesmith Howard Vatcher's patented hooks in the great pop tradition. With the solid backing of brother Don Vatcher on bass and harmonies and non-pareil drummer Jeff Nead doing his best work yet, "Extra Chewy" is a flavorful treat with a little something for every lover of roots-style pop.

The boys put together a good one here. Very enjoyable pop/rock with a comfortable feel. Good mix of pop tunes and blues.
