I have the LP and grew up on this in college. I also found this to be a great workout set ! Fast moving up until the near the end. Manfred Mann did the best job on his version of "Spirits in the Night" IMHO. Definately a must have for 70s collections.

this was the prelude to the blockbuster "the roaring silence"
which I feel was the breakthru lp. The line-up was the same
on both. Both hit singles are spingsteen covers and better
than bruce could have hoped for. My favorite cut is the 3rd
cut "quittin' time". The haunting guitar solo is one of my
all time favorites. These guys can really jam. I have always
liked Manfred Mann but this was there best.

i was recently going thru my old cassettes and found this album. i played it and WOW! the 70's came back with a bang.
on my 7.1 surround this album totally blew me away. buy it b4 it's gone.

this is easily one of the top (prog) rock albums i've listened to (though it took some time for it to grow on me) and easily rivals the roaring silence as mann's best work. throughout the album the format of song followed by instrumental is maintained, which only reflects the instrumental capabilities of the band members (mick rogers is easily one of the most underrated guitar players in rock music). the album opens with a bang with springsteen's spirits in the night and what a cover it is! mann apparently is at his best when re-interpreting the songs of others, for the other highlight of the album is the cover of joan armatrading's visionary mountains where mick rogers unleashes one of the most expressive guitar solos i've ever heard. the instrumentals are not fillers but well composed/performed pieces of music which fits perfectly with the mood of the album. the mood and the atmosphere of this album defines space rock!

    I'm very surprised about the existence of this record on CD. I own this fine vinyl over 20 years. I love it! It's a well known title in my collection and was played hundreds of times all over the years. What a pleasure to have now the possibility to get also the second album, that will be recommended as the better than the first one!

    The first Bombers album, released in 1978, contains an uneven and mostly ineffective set of songs aimed at the dance floors. The group's members included Gino Soccio and Denis Lepage, who would soon go on to other projects to much greater success. Westend Records, the original U.S. distributor, released the tracks "Mexican" and "Dance Dance Dance" in 12" format for the discos. They garnered some airplay but are not especially strong cuts. The other tracks on the album fare even less well. The group seemed to be making instrumental rock songs with a danceable beat; this didn't really work. The follow up album showed great improvement.

    This 1979 album is a stronger one than its predecessor, "Bombers." Unlike that first project (which interestingly employed the talents of Canadian break-outs Gino Soccio and Lime's Denis LaPage), this sequel steps away from danceable rock intrumentals and shows mastery of dance music. The scratchy, rhythm guitar approach of Chic is present here. There are some interesting disco songs. The album tracks "Pistolero" and especially "Shake" are tremendous on the dance floor. The 12" versions of "Everybody Get Dancin'" and "Let's Dance" are improvements on the album originals. Really, only "Disco Galaxy" is poor, as it presents bland female vocals and embarrassing outer space imagery. I was happy to have recently stumbled onto this group's previously unknown (to me) albums,originally available on the small but seminal Westend Records label, and glad they are available on CD format.

      they just got signed to punk-core, which hopefully will not change them. this cd people say sounds like motorhead, but i dont agree with that. they are hardcore metal high energy punk. they mix all those generes together very well, if you like good music from metal to streetpunk, check it out

          I had this album in vinyl when it first came out. a note was attached to this about how the nightingale bombers where
          accually flying over at the time of the recording. if you listen
          carefully you can hear thier roar in the middle of the album.
          no doubt; a well planned fate or just plane luck. witch ever/
          its worth the few dollars.its of some of the best of mann.

          This is one excellent batch of tunes! Bruce Springsteen is great, Manfred & the Band make him greater with their intense version of ' Spirits In The Night '. No part of the whole "Nightingales & Bombers" experiment is flawed. It even makes me feel sorry for the heavy-set,aka... "Fat Nellie".

          Pink Floyd used on "The Wall", very well I might add, the same 1940's recording which gives this collection its name. Remember the lirics on the first song on side two of "The Wall", ' Look Mommy, there's no plane up in the sky '? Compare the back-ground sounds of that song with the end of the great title cut of "Nightingales & Bombers". Might surprise ye.

          I find that countdown and time...,are the best follow -up song to spirit in the night.We can't find these songs anywhere else.Got to hang on to my 20 years old cassettes...What a shame.
