Not to be confused with the collection Songs Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, this album is Harry Gregson-Williams's instrumental score for the movie. Marking the composer's third collaboration with director Andrew Adamson (after both Shrek flicks), this score also is one of the more mature offerings from Gregson-Williams, best known for his work on family films. The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Indeed, it fits squarely in the current style popular for big epics--even using (on a few tracks) the vocals of Lisbeth Scott, which fall halfway between those of Enya and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser (both of whom, uncoincidentally, appeared on the Lords of the Rings soundtracks). The CD concludes with four songs, with Gregson-Williams cowriting Scott's "Where." On "Can't Take It In," Imogen Heap's vocal acrobatics eerily recall those of the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, while Alanis Morissette's "Wunderkind" is an inspirational, almost girl-powerish track written from the point of view of the movie's Lucy. But the best of these songs is "Winter Light" by Tim Finn, four minutes of understated, piano-driven melancholia. Look for it tucked near the very end of the CD. Note that the soundtrack comes also as a two-CD special edition . The second disc is a DVD that includes galleries of film stills and concept art, a featurette about the recordings of the score and a making-of featurette. There's also a segment in which the (mostly) Christian bands involved in the Songs Inspired by... album talk about their involvement in that project. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-06-26

I bought this for my wife. My wife, my kids and I all love it.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing with Others.......2007-05-23

This movie was a big success at our home. We saw it at the local theaters and decided to buy it upon release. We also have purchased other copies to give to friends.

We look forward to the future movies of the other 5 books.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of quality.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed the soundtrack immensely, except for the last three songs which have vocals. This is much better than the movie. I just wish they would list the companies would list the musician's that performed the music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant minds.......2007-03-14

This is one of the best soundtrack I've ever listened to.From the serene "Lucy Meets Mr.Tumnus"to the soaring theme found in many of the tracks,Harry-Greggson Williams does a masterful job at creating a magical Narnia.I listened to this nonstop when I first got it,and I still listen to it more than any other soundtrack.
The four(three really, because Winter Light is utterly detestable)songs at the end are reason enough to buy this CD."I Can't Take It In" is brilliant with Imogen Heap's incredible talent."Wunderkind" is so artful and expertly written,it has become one of my favorite songs.
So this soundtrack meets all the requirements for a great soundtrack-great theme, amazing creativity, and stellar songs.

4 out of 5 stars Piano, Vocal and Guitar Music from Narnia.......2007-03-10

This book has eight of the songs from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Some of the songs, such as Evacuating London and Father Christmas, include some fairly advanced musical notation. Evacuating London, Lucy Meets Mr. Tumnus, A Narnia Lullaby and Father Christmas do not include guitar notation. However, this is authentic Narnia music, as composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. The first eight pages consist of colored pictures from the movie. The only thing that would make this music book even better would be inclusion of The Battle, which we are still looking for.

At first glance, this looks like it might be yet another one of those records where an older cult artist is paired with a bunch of younger/ supposedly hipper musicians in efforts to add legitimacy to the younguns and street cred to said cult figure. Such is not the case with Ono's version of a collaborative hipster album, Yes, I'm A Witch. Yoko chose all the artists herself, and her choices range from predictable (Cat Power, Antony, Flaming Lips) to not (Le Tigre, Porcupine Tree, Hank Shocklee). The musicians were asked to pick elements of songs from Ono's back catalog and rework them. Most chose her distinctive vocals and created new songs using them (surprisingly, no one chose to work with "Mind Train" off her daring 1971 LP Fly). Unsurprisingly, Peaches chose to rework "Kiss Kiss Kiss," the infamous Double Fantasy song wherein Ono appears to achieve orgasm. Jason Pierce from Spiritualized turns the dance-y 1981 number "Walking on Thin Ice" into a powerful drone/ guitar workout percolating with a drum machine's pulse. The awesomest song is the Flaming Lips' take on Lennon/ Ono's "Cambridge 1969," carving a marvelous krautrock-ish groove that cradles Ono's unique vocal talents and Lennon's feedback and makes it something new, and better. The results overall are surprisingly great, though it's a bit disorienting given the eclectic array of artists. Ono fans, of course, will not likely be bothered by that. --Mike McGonigal

3 out of 5 stars I prefer the originals but a few really excell.......2007-05-25

Every Man, Every Woman; Death of Samantha; No One Can See Me Like You Do; Walking On Thin Ice; Toyboat; and I'm Moving On are the re-makes that catch my ear. The rest range from ok to not for me. Like Open Your Box it's a mixed bag. It took several listenings to appreciate anything, but the ones that caught fire real work for me. I'm not into all this disco-like pounding that seems to invade most of Open Your Box and some of I'm A Witch. That doesn't allow an individual piece to distinguish itself. But all in all I'm happy to own anything Ono puts out. For me Ono peaked in the 90's with Rising (cd and single [the single I play again and again as it speaks loudly to me] and the cd like her Season Of Glass are her two best cd/album releases); Franklin Summer; and Georgia Stone (a poignant anti-war Fluxus Symphony).

The original Walking On Thin Ice is a tough act to follow, but the version on I'm A Witch is the one remake of this powerful song to equal its origins. Yoko seems to be on the cutting edge hit parade of being hip with the current music revolutionaries. I'm really unfamiliar with that scene. Her need to be hip and sexy at seventy-something seems terribly important to her. While I'm really happy to play the tunes I like from both current releases (Open Your Box, the single, especially the extended single cd release of several versions of Open Your Box, is magnificent, there are times when she rivals that 70's disco powerhouse Donna Summers, which is no small accomplishment) I'm more in tune with the serious avant-garde Ono. Though the hipper and younger crowd will really enjoy these two releases. I find them better to listen to while driving in my car with that open road exhileration of movement.

5 out of 5 stars Love the new remix CD.......2007-04-27

I have been a Yoko Ono fan for as long as I can remember. years ago I stumbled upon a 45 single of Yoko and Elephants Memory and I have been hooked ever since! There are some poeple that have posted here saying Yoko has no talent, but I will argue with them till the end of time! Someone also says that Yoko will not let anyone record the vocals to her songs...WRONG AGAIN!!!! I have a CD titled I believe the name is "Every man has a woman". This is not the new single she had a few years ago....this is a various artists doing Yoko's songs. The thing is, I really like the other people doing the songs, but I prefer Yoko's vocals. Yoko has always been referred to as the one that broke up the Beatles, but a lot of people do not realize she was world famous before she ever met John Lennon. Yoko's songs bring out alot of emotion and I am so glad to say that I have all of her albums. The ones with John and ALL of her solo albums.

5 out of 5 stars Yoko rocks.......2007-04-12

Yoko is so cool! Loved her all these years and this remix is really fun. Hope to hear more from her soon.

5 out of 5 stars "That was beautiful!".......2007-04-11

This album is great! Yoko comes through with an incredible sort of retrospective done right. Working with so many artists, it's really fun to hear how they've gone about arranging and producng these songs. I'm normally horrified by these compilation albums where an aging artist teams up with the youngins, but Yoko Ono has such a vitality to her, and she so definitely allows these artists to be themselves along with her that the resulting album is refreshing.

Also, another reviewer (from my own hometown of Des Moines, funnily enough) ignorantly said Yoko didn't allow anyone else to sing. Not true. Cat Power sings with her, as do the Polyphonic Spree. And I may have missed a few more--I dunno. I just know this album lifts my spirits in surprising ways!

5 out of 5 stars the best there was the best their is and the best there will ever be .......2006-09-11

I remember buying this album at Record Heaven in Griffin ,Ga and still have the original two lp's recorded by this very talented group of individuals. Ron Goedert is by far the greatest vocalist ever{ yes that includes Robert Plant }I remember telling my best friend {KV Have you ever thought of changing}that I found a vocalist that could hit higher notes than Plant.Unfortunately, due to the popularity of groups such as Led Zep-Deep Purple and other great bands of the seventies White Witch did not get the credit they so rightfully deserve. This album is brilliant from the beginning to the wonderful closing lyrics of "This is the power of White Witch"-FYI the pictures on the lp are from Rose Hill cementary in Macon, Ga -RIP Duwayne Allman and Butch Trucks-

5 out of 5 stars absolutely brilliant .......2006-08-09

See my review today on the sophomore effort "A Spiritual Greeting". Both are a strong collections of fine melodies in the pop/progrockvein, the seventies are wellknown for. Therefore strongly recommended, even when the band is completely unknown to you, which doesn't have to withold you from take a try and listening. Although knowing the albums for a long time I am glad (and slightly surprised) this is also available on CD.

I was one of the lucky ones who saw them in concert. It was at the Sarasota Exhibition Hall. I don't remember the year, but I never forgot it. I have since found their music on download sites and have turned my 17 year old on to them. She also likes them.

5 out of 5 stars Can't find them anymore,who has one?.......2005-07-16

I saw them in Warner Robins,Georgia at the Civic Center in the early "70's. Great show but I can't find the CD's anywhere. I have tried the email addresses on some of the reviews but they are either too old or were false to begin with. I am looking to buy or swap a CD to get the White Witch Cd's,copies are ok. Email me at ersag5@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Underated Rock Bands Of The 70's........2005-03-21

Along with Captain Beyond, White Witch could probably be the most underrated rock and roll band of the 70's. No one instrument dominate the sound...it is a well mixed album. This is one of my favorite albums not only of the 70's, but of all-time. I couldn't name the best cut, but the opener, "Help Me Lord" and "Home Grown Girl" really rock. Our band covered the ragtime sounding "It's So Nice To Be Stoned". It was a favorite of our audiences. Listen...if you like rock and roll, you'll love this one.

5 out of 5 stars freakin amazing!!.......2007-03-23

bein that this music/movie came from my era, of course im a little biased about teen witch!! but not only that, it was just such a cool movie. the music was always more recited among me and my friends more than any other movie/musical. but now comin out with a MUSICAL... is just pure genious, for those of us "'80's kids" who need our updated teen witch fix!

"Teen Witch the Musical" realy is such a fun and great album. i give major props to all who put it together, and all those amazing kids who sing in it. i just barely got the cd myself, and so have only heard all the songs now. but i cant wait to show it to all my friends who were right there with me watchin teen witch over and over again for "like" the last ten/fifteen years (?! wow has it been that long!) :)

thanks to the cd, i cant wait to see the musical, and finally be able sing all my teen witch faves (outloud) when i go there!

4 out of 5 stars MOVIE WAS HOTTER...BUT MUSICAL IS HOT!.......2007-03-14

The songs were to a slightly different beat; but I have to say that IT'S ABOUT TIME they came out with the music on cd.

5 out of 5 stars OMFG.......2007-03-04

I absolutely love this movie.
I hope i get a chance to see the musical.
Hopefully they come out with the ORIGINAL movie soundtrack but for now this will do. =]

5 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs Way UP!!.......2007-03-03

The idea to remake this awesome 80's movie into a Musical is sheer genius! I want to be the first person in line when the show comes out! The music in the album is amazing. It's like I'm back in the 80's, only without all the reverb. What more could you ask for? I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album !!!.......2007-03-02

I can't believe they finally came out with an amazing album from my favorite movie!! I don't know what that HEEHAW is talking about with 1 star. They do remakes and updates all the time because after 20 years it would be a little tired to come out with the same old 80's recording. It is the soundtrack from the new MUSICAL! The production and vocals are fantatastic! Hello! I highly recomend this album especially "Finest Hour". And the new song "Fool For Love". For us Teen Witch Fans it is a dream come true! I suggest Mr. heehaw go buy the original recording of Jennifer Holiday in "Dream Girls" while the rest of Amercia enjoys the academy award winning performance of Jennifer Hudson. And I am the first one in line for a ticket to "TEEN WITCH THE MUSICAL"

4 out of 5 stars Wahoo for Mr. Buzz.......2007-04-04

This album, OH MAN THIS ALBUM!!!

I bought this CD because it had two of my favorite songs on it (i.e. "Sweet Willie Rollbar" and "Revolve")

it is a good CD, don't get me wrong, but there are like two tracks with no music on it (like the last track) which kind of pistons me off when a band will do that, put ambient noise on an album and title it as if it were a song!

4 out of 5 stars A good dose of lunatic rock intermixed with ambient music from Hell.......2006-11-23

On the excellent "Stoner Witch" the Melvins churn through song after song with a dense primordial energy--think neutron star emissions--buffered with excursions into the darker recesses of imagination. The band is not content to lock in to one particular vibe and often zags when you thing they are about to zig.

It took some guts to concoct this work, and it will take some fortitude to listen intently and loudly. Expect to do so alone if friends, like many of mine, cannot range far from the safe and sure when it comes to music. There's none of that to be found here.

If you enjoy a good dose of lunatic rock, that is distorted guitars, sludge drenched bass, and map cap percussion, intermixed with ambient music from Hell, then Stone Witch awaits.

4 out of 5 stars Hail the King (Buzzo), baby. .......2006-10-09

Pacific Northwest rock shamans the Melvins are among the innovators of '80s and '90s "grunge," though they easily defied this simple categorization with every release. For every churning bucket 'o' sludge like Bullhead they released some off-the-wall album of ambient noodling like Ambient Noise Takeover or Honky. Stoner Witch, one part of the trio released during the Atlantic era (the other two are Houdini and Stag), combines both sides of the Melvins' sound into a surprisingly coherent whole while adding a small dose of commercial hard rock sensibility for good measure.

However, don't be mislead into thinking this is some pallid sellout effort, 'cause it's anything but. If anything, the fact that this band ever got signed to a major is a mystery to me (and I mean that in a positive way, of course).

The first four songs kick Stoner Witch off with a bang, with one-minute opener Skweetis (I wish it were longer--Dale Crover's legendary drumming kicks arse on this one), insidiously catchy stomper Queen, balls-to-the-wall speed of Sweet Willy Rollbar, and the excellent Revolve, a minor hit which stands as one of the most accessible and catchy entries in their catalog. King Buzzo's gruff howl and guitar playing is in fine form here.

Then it starts getting weird. You've got nice chilled slow burns like Goose Freight Train and the dreamy 6-minute Shevil; a dark evil dirge titled At The Stake that would've fit right in on their earlier albums; and Roadbull and Magic Pig Detective, which screw with expectations in some entertaining ways--the former starts like one of the earlier, more accessible tracks before turning into a marching tune complete with whistling, and the latter starts with a wall of noise then suddenly drops in a bit of rock to make it go down easy.

The best two songs, however, are saved for last. June Bug is a great little instrumental with excellent dynamics and melody that cries for a longer run time. The album closes with Lividity, a 9-minute creeping ambient drone that somehow manages to be driven mostly by a handful of REALLY HEAVY bass notes and sporadic Dale hits seemingly placed just right to make you jump. Fans of Earth, Sunn0)))) and the like (all Melvins-influenced, natch) will love this one.

All in all, Stoner Witch is one of the most interesting and varied "major label" albums ever. If you're going to start with any Melvins record, make it this one. Chase that with a round of Houdini then the sonic extremity of Bullhead and Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments. If you're not singing the Buzzo's praises by then consider yourself lame.

lets get one thing straight: Melvins are one of the greatest hard rock bands in metal/punk/alt. history, hands down. they're not only one of the heaviest, they're also one of the loudest and most expressive, and most experimental, never becoming predictable or boring. with each album the band takes one step beyond what you'd expect, but is always--ALWAYS y'hear?--remarkably similar to themselves. in every track on this glorious CD, one of their least hard 'n' heavy, the band takes early 90s Grunge to fantastic new levels of Sludge and dire weirdness, the standouts (to me) being BULLHEAD and MAGIC PIG DETECTIVE. If you want the sameole MTV, corporate radio, emo andor Nu Metal filth thats acting as a plague to modern music, then go away. you won't like this because, quite frankly, your brain has bee shrinked to a level so small as you can never understand what is so special about this music. Melvins use both ambience and talent to pump out one of the strangest and most entertaining bunch of songs ever recorded, and this is, in my ohsohumble opinion a PERFECT companion piece to HOUDINI. if you like these two, move forward and get THE CRYBABY and HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER before checking out their earlier works. If you don't like it, besides being a musical retarded, you won't like much of this band's legend. 'nuff said...

but thats just my opinion. i could be wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Music For the Most Committed.......2006-09-07

After a driving four song opening sequence, concluding with the monster jam "Revolve", the Melvins decide to delve into ambient noise, destroying the momentum and stopping the cd dead. I'm all for experimenting, but for God sakes know what works and what should stay in the can! The Melvins idea of experimenting is starting a song (if you can call it that) in one style, then ending it in a radically different tone, failing to fuse the two together. If you think it's great to crank up your speaker to hear this electronic noodling, then get blown away when they suddenly decide to play a metal riff...then buy this cd. To me this is old and sounds like the Melvins got into really bad King Crimson. This is not the Melvin's accessible, it's their most difficult. If you like heavy stuff, get Bullhead. Houdini is also very good, though the last song falls into the Stoner Witch mode.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

5 out of 5 stars Bantock's Celtic Symphony.......2006-07-25

My husband & I heard this piece on our local classical music radio station and decided right then (at 11:30 at night) that we had to order the CD. Since it arrived, we have been playing it (and the other Bantock CD that we ordered - the Pagan Symphony) almost non-stop. We love celtic music and these two CD's add so much to our collection. The only down side is that the dynamics go from pianissimo to fortissimo quite often, so it's hard to find the perfect volume setting, but who cares! it's beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars A very Straussian Hebridean symphony.......2004-06-12

Like another reviewer, my initial exposure to this music was through an NPR broadcast. I quickly purchased the CD and have enjoyed the echt-Richard Strauss "Hebridean" symphony many times. Like the other music on the CD -- none of which has the lasting effect of this symphony -- it heaves and rolls with all the emotions of a sea journey. For that reason, I burned my own CD, mating this version of the "Hebridean" with Handley's performance of Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" from "Peter Grimes" and his recording of Frank Bridge's "The Sea" suite. I think this places the Hebridean symphony in more appropriate company than with Bantock's lesser music. Still, this CD makes a wonderful introduction to the music of a composer not well-known in America. If you buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Bantock: Hebridean Symphony/The Sea Reivers.......2003-08-17

I heard a portion of this work (Hebridean Symphony) on public radio a while back. Having never heard of Sir Granville Bantock, I was curious enough to seek out and purchase the CD. I keep asking myself "How could such a wonderful, exciting work be kept so obscure?!?" The Hebridean Symphony is an excellent work, worthy of much higher prominence in the Music world.

The "3 Minute surprise" on this album?:

"The Sea Reivers" is a thrilling, roller-coaster ride of musical enjoyment. Having heard only the Handley version on Hyperion, I cannot imagine any other version having any more excitement or fire! Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars An incomprehensible neglection of an outstanding composer.......2002-05-25

It's absolutely astonishing how a composer of the range and impact of Sir Granville Bantock has been forgotten for so long, not only at concert halls but also (and this is even more surprising) by recording labels.I agree in every word with the opinions of previous Bantock's lovers reviews, but I want to add a few more things. I have also a huge classical symphonic CD'S collection, but among them all I consider a few of them as authentic jewells, hidden treasures which must be urgently unburied. This is one and, probably, the most valuable of them.It is impossible to describe the sense of emotion, grandiosity and splendour this "God of Symphonic Music" is able to display in each of his, fortunately, prolific compositions, and specially in his Hebriddean Symphony, which is, undoubtedly, one of the master works, not only in the History of Symphonic Music but in the History of Music.Mysterious woodwind passages preceed others of sublime brass magnificency and glory, all involved in a lyric ,epic and romantic wave;a dream come true thanks to the brilliant sound of the RPO under the baton of Vernon Handley.
Each new listening becomes a new delight for the ears, and deep emotions arise once an again, making this CD a unique experience, unforgivable to miss by any symphonic music lover.
I'm absolutely delighted with Hyperion, the RPO and Vernon Handley, as they keep recording Bantock's music, and I hope they will be doing so. I'm craving for more Bantock!.

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper...a delight!.......2000-06-02

I, too, have a very large classical CD collection, with my tastes running primarily to Mahler, Shostakovich, Brucker, and Sibelius - though I recently added Rubbra to this group of frequent musical companions. My brother gave this CD to me for Christmas a few years ago, but it was within the last year that I decided to really give it a close listen. I now consider it to be one of those pieces (like Mahler #4, Shostakovich #5, and Sibelius #2)that always sound fresh to my ears - always feel like musical home!

Though I love the initial three pieces on this CD (particularly the lovely Celtic Symphony with its gloriously peaceful opening), it is the Hebridean Symphony that is on my Desert Island list. From its brooding, dramatic opening (clearly preparing the listener for a meaningful experience) to the lovely climax and ending, this music is always totally involving. The recording is spectacular - the dynamic range is huge, and the brass the percussion make some huge punctuations; it is hard to find just one listening level for the car, in fact!

Don't miss this high point of not only British classical music, but all of music, in total! Now if only it would start showing up in local concert halls....

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

5 out of 5 stars Angel Witch - self-titled/25th Anniversary Expanded Edition (Castle Music).......2006-05-09

Silly me,this isn't merely ANOTHER pressing of the 'Resurrection' import CD(see my review)that I assumed it was JUST BECAUSE it features the very same cover.Turns out that it's a reissue of the stunning 1980 self-titled debut from the beloved underdogs of the NWOBHM movement. You get the lp's original ten scorchers, plus ten(10)...count them, bonus cuts extra that are of alternative versions, rare b-sides,etc.Very good.An absolute must-have.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic!.......2006-04-22

This was one of the first ten albums I ever bought. I believe I purchased it back in 1982. I still have that original, beautiful piece of vinyl Justice! I purchased it again on CD a few years ago, and now I have to purchase it again to get these bonus tracks. I will do so willingly because it will definitely be worth it. This is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time! Their later work wasn't as good, but is still important to own. I liked the live album that came out in the early 90's too!

5 out of 5 stars NWOBHM's finest!.......2006-04-21

It's too bad Angel Witch never got as much publicity as Motorhead, Venom, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Saxon and Def Leppard. They're one of the best! When I hear bands like Megadeth, Metallica, and Testament--especialy Testament--they sound like a mere reflection of Angel Witch. The melodies, solos, clean tone, and much more makes these guys an important bedrock to be contended with. This album is certainly a gem for anyone interested in thrash and its development. You can't understand thrash without knowing who Angel Witch. Believe me--just ask Dave Mustaine!

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Classick.......2006-04-03

It's sad how many metal fans have never and will never hear this album. This is full-forearm spike band metal from the 80s that just bleeds style and class. Unfortunately this band never achieved much fame and subsequent albums are not of the same caliber. For those with ears to hear...

2 out of 5 stars over rated.......2005-12-25

i've heard all kinds of NWOBHM bands,Chateaux,Savage,Grim Reaper,Diamond Head,Samson,Saxon,Holocaust,Quartz and all the bands that matter and this album really is underwhelming.Confused,Atlantis and Angel Of Death are awesome, but there's nothing on here that's pre-thrash like Holocaust,Raven or Diamond Head. They don't kick butt like the more traditional Saxon or Samson.it is Sabbathy in places, but nothing like Quartz or Witchfinder General, two bands that stomp all over this.Really the only thing that gives this legendary status is that its suppossed to be really satanic, and its not even that.go figure.and after 25 years why can't Kevin come up with an album that doesn't suck,or for that matter an album at all.most people will disagree, but if you buy this, remember"i told you so".

4 out of 5 stars Solid Retro Rock.......2007-02-20

Witch's 2006 self-titled debut is a very retro affair. At the helm is Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis, who surprisingly keeps beat as opposed to ripping up the guitar. Don't expect music in the same vein as Dinosaur Jr though, as this album is a bluesy 70s stoner rock outing.

The album is one of those irritating albums that gradually gets a little repetitive and therefore worse. The opening track "Seer" is the best piece on the album and everything I was hoping for, fusing the high-pitched vocals with fuzzy bluesy riffs and some excellent solos. Solid tracks such as "Black Saint" and "Changing" continue the heavy 70s vibe, wearing the Black Sabbath influence heavily on the sleeve. Gradually the sound becomes a little too repetitive, as the band doesn't really mix it up all that much. While the later songs such as "Hand of Glory" and "Isadora" aren't bad, they seem a little tired after the initial cuts.

If you're a fan of Black Sabbath and stoner/doom rock in general, then this should be up your street. Witch's self-titled is a solid and promising debut, if not a little repetitive.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-06-30

I can't quite place my finger on it...what it is about this band?...hmmm. It is unique...yet simple. It has a lot of feeling, the drum sound owns, it is beautiful, the songs are well-CRAFTed. I don't want to use the word "catchy" but well, it is. Can't seem to get it out of my player. Why? Don't want to! Can't wait to hear more from this band!

4 out of 5 stars wild and wooly.......2006-06-27

This is strong. There's something untamed about it. While hearkening back to the seventies tonally, it actually sounds original. While falling into the company of recent stoner/doom works by The Sword and Witchcraft (to name but two), it separates itself from the pack by virtue of dynamic range and killer riffage. Although there are some sonic similarities to Kyuss, the overall compositional approach is looser, freer. Some great psychedelic howling to top it all off. The lyrics are obscure and the vocals semi-Geddy Lee-ish, but that's alright with me. Worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars this rules!!.......2006-06-10

i don't care what category you put this album in (stoner rock, doom, sludge, etc.) it is what rock music needs now. with the emergence of bands like wolfmother and the sword, music is finally getting back to basics. they have the perfect recipe for a great record: loud guitars, loud drums, bass that kicks you in the nuts and great vocals. paired with psychedelic images and evil lyrics, it doesn't get any better than this. this is an album that i will be listening to 20 years from now. well worth the 14 bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome stoner rock.......2006-06-02

The first time I listened to this album I did not like it. I thought it was a chick singing at first. Then I listened to it again. And again. Then I noticed what was going on with the guitars, that double solo thing like Iommi did on the first Sabbath album. So I started to really dig it. There are some awesome riffs on here. And THEN I listened to it on headphones. Aw, man, if you haven't done that yet, you need to. There is so much going on that you won't pick up otherwise. And make sure it's loud! Nice, jammin' 70s-ish sounding metal here. Give it a few listens and you won't be disappointed.
