Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

Punk rock is meant to be played loud and snotty. Blink 182 are a San Diego punk rock threesome whose interest in arrested development has led them to a sparkling array of sex jokes that cover everything from anal sex to masturbation to... Well, you get the idea--and that's just the between-song banter. This limited-edition live collection--a holding pattern until the band's fifth studio album is released in 2001--features a slam-dunk collection of the band's hits, fan favorites from their various studio albums, and new tunes ("Blew Job" among the enlightened tracks). One additional studio track, "Man Overboard" (already a hit on a radio near you), packs a harder punch than most, thanks to the studio finesse. But mostly these are revved-up versions of songs to break a skateboard by. With the added appeal of a color booklet and about seven minutes of "stage banter" tacked on at the end, guaranteed to either leave you in stitches or have you grounded for a month. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars good.......2006-07-01

this is a good live album. i dont watch mtv and i hope no one else does but this is good live. the jokes in between songs are hilarious as long as your not uptight or disgusted by their language. the bestpart is the 20 something tracks of them just talking.

buy this if you enjoy blink. if not, go buy something else. its plain and simple.

3 out of 5 stars Good Cd.......2006-04-04

This is a good live blink 182 cd....Almost too good. I have a couple other concerts of them and the quality of their singing and playing isn't anything compared to this one. I thing their was some kind of tampering with the vocals. On the other blink cds, you can't even understand half of the things tom says, but everything is clear and understandable on this cd. Oh-well, besides that, the cd is good because they change the voice patterns on some songs like What's my age again and Voyeur and Pathetic. Even if they did mess with the cd, i still love them.

5 out of 5 stars Brillient.......2005-11-30

Such good fun and humour. Tom and Mark are so funny and first time listening to it really made me laugh. Also the songs on it are awesome from their best album enema of the state.

you have not lived until you have listened to it

5 out of 5 stars They should play studio albums live.......2005-11-26

im a casual fan of blink 182 so nobody yell at me for saying somthing wrong about the band. anyway this is a phenomanal cd. The songs live sound a lot better than in the studio because there given a edgy and quicker feeling and of corse theirs the audiance interaction. this is a great cd but really hard to find(i had to get it from a friend because i couldnt find it anywere else) but if u keep searching ull find someone with it

3 out of 5 stars Silly fun.......2005-08-06

Mentioning the name Blink-182 in front of Punk fans is a fun thing to do. If they're of the Old School, they often go off on a rant about how kids these days have no idea what Punk is, and Blink-182 definitely ain't it. Say the name to one of the clueless teens who so enrage the crusty Punks, and opinion is divided. Girls love `em because they're hot, the boys don't because their music sucks. So many emotions and so much controversy was never created by so little.

Blink-182 may have been Punk in the early days of their career, but by the time they recorded `The Mark, Tom And Travis Show', they were a Pop group with guitars. They aren't exactly the sanitised boyband type Pop, but Pop nonetheless. The guitar sound is nonthreatening, the bass respectable, and the drums just a slight bit sloppy.

The songwriting is simple, but is a formula which works well for the band The vocal melodies are simple yet lush, and generally carry the songs over top of the no frills instrumentation. The vocals sound very polished for a live recording, so either the members of Blink-182 are good singers, or there's been a degree of studio manipulation. You decide...

The band's between song ad-lib comedy performance is a highlight, to such an extent 29 extra short tracks of it are tacked on the end of the album. The humour is suitably juvenile and scatological. Of course, all three members rip each other, making fun of their sexuality, musical inability, appearance and mothers. Satan visits intermittently through the show, thanks to a vocal harmonizer. Topics for conversation include Tom Cruise, dressing in your mother's clothes and seducing your Dad, oral sex, getting sweaty, self-manipulation ("I was inspecting them for strange bumps"), and the ubiquitous dog jokes. Girls flashing at concerts is not a new phenomenon, and for most bands, it's a bonus for performing live. For Blink-182 though, it goes along the lines of "Boobies! You're too young. You're far too young".

The song "Family Reunion" consists of purposefully offensive lyrics, and "Country Song" isn't far different. It's the sort of thing 12 year olds laugh out loud at, and adults pretend isn't funny, but snigger quietly to themselves about.

The weepy "Adam's Song" is the only deviation from the dumb white kid Pop/Rock formula. It was a big hit for the band, and deservedly so. The song is restrained and respectful, and has some attractive vocal hooks which come across well in the live situation.

But still, songs like "What's My Age Again?" (One of the band members shouts"Here comes the slow pretty part!" mid-song), "All The Small Things" and "Dammit" are irresistible simply because they're good dumb fun.

There is little of any substance or real meaningful content on this entire album, but there isn't meant to be. Overanalyse the band, their image, their intentions and their impact all you like. This album is simply lowest common denominator Pop entertainment and nothing more. Put your brain out of gear and enjoy.

Album Description

This greatest-hits collection spans the short career of one of pop-punk's most celebrated outfits, blink-182. The album features tracks from their 1994 debut Buddha through to the more experimental final album, 2003's blink-182. The album serves as a perfect introduction into the band's hook-driven pop-punk which has always involved a large dose of frat-boy toilet humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blink 182.......2007-05-07

Great album. They really should have included Give Me One Good Reason, though. Thats probably their best song. Adam's Song is the best song on this album definetly. I wish they were still together.

4 out of 5 stars to all.......2007-04-10

i am a huge blink-182 fan. people have to stop saying "blink isnt 'PUNK ROCK'" get over it.... i know they arent punk. punk you know is screaming words you cant understand and blaming the world for your problems. go listen to Black Flag and see what i mean. blink-182 did an excellent job as a band and now they are finished. Dammit was totally remade and it sounds alot better. blink-182 was a band inspired by The Cure, The Misfits, and The Desendents and some poppy music and you can hear it for yourself when you listen. therefore, they arent true punk, the music gives you the chills and reminds you of when you were a kid, which is what i love. selection for this album could of been better though, which is why i give it a four. STOP GIVING REVEIWS THAT SAY THEY ARENT PUNK..... WE ALL KNOW!!

5 out of 5 stars great for coffee!!.......2007-03-23

After dealing with zombies all day, I like to come home and relax. I usually wind down with a cup of mocha and yell at the dolt on the radio who is trying to tell me to go see Al Gore's movie. Al Gore is not an actor and he is not even half the athlete that Frank is. Speaking of Frank the forty niners have not done squat since Steve Young retired but my team is the Bears. Oh well we lost the superbowl but back to what I was saying, when I get home and relax I need something to set my coffee mug down on and any cd by this band is great for that. really really great because they are so annoying and boring. the cd is worth the money for a coaster though and i let me children smash the jewel cases with bats sometimes. it teaches them hand eye coodination much better than those silly video games the zombie kids are playing. no wonder everyone thinks the world is going to end, with all these zombies running around!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-02-28

Great CD, some of the best Blink182 songs around. For those of you with nothing of theirs go with it and find out what you like then go buy their other stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Compilation.......2007-02-18

I'm 15 i just dont have an account. Anyways Blink 182 is one of the greatest bands ever. If you dont think so then you are an idiot. I would suggest buying all there albums instead of this but if your new to Blink 182 then you should get this first. Heres a review of each track.

1.Carousel-5/5 from Cheshire Cat. excellent song. Very creative and exellent bass and guitar work. Very old school

12.Feeling This- 5/5 From the self titled album. really good song. the bridge part that mark sings always gives me chills.
13.I Miss You- 4/5 From the self titled album. pretty good but slow and a little bit emo.
14.Down- 4/5 From the self titled album. this one took a while to grow on me. kinda sad.
15. Always- 5/5 From the self titled album. very upbeat love song. awesome drums and cool bass intro.
16.Not Now- 5/5 new song. very good. gives me chills. it also makes me sad because it reminds me of when they broke up.
17.Another Girl Another Planet- 5/5 cover song. i forget who did the original. good song. nice way to end.
overall its a good greatest hits and you should buy it if you want to get into blink 182.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

An avant-garde ensemble playing the 1978 Brian Eno piece which put ambient music on the map. Eno's idea was to make a series of tape loops into tightly composed Muzak. He wanted a sonic backdrop for bland public spaces that would reward close listening. Bang on a Can, playing acoustic and electric instruments, breathe life into it, making the music's neutrality seem coldly beautiful. The piece is divided into four parts, each consisting of a few gentle, minimal figures, calmly repeated and shifted. Rhythm is eliminated and time seems to stretch. What is revealed is the sensuousness possible in a single note. Music has never been the same. This is the best place to hear where it changed. --Steve Tignor

1 out of 5 stars stupid and not Eno. Zero stars........2006-12-28

Its not an Eno album, but its credited to him.

Yes, I know, its "bang on a can", but it lists him as primary regardless. It should not.

The compositional process for the original is Algorithmic. treating it like a reproduceable composition is like trying to repaint Pollack's "Blue Poles". You could, but why?

As a lifetime fan of Eno, I find this product absurd and misleading.

Airports is a masterpiece.
This is a piece of something else.

5 out of 5 stars Eno gone wild.......2005-09-27

Bang On A Can's version of "Music for Airports" adds a jangly depth to Eno's more compressed version. They've managed to use the studio to create space in an already swiss cheese like piece. But the key difference here is the space is much more stark than Eno, thanks to the startling presence of their instruments, which rattle and drone and twitter expressively. The quiet becomes the space for anticipation of the instruments. so rather than the steady rolling pulse of Eno's, you get more up and down with BOAC's version.

It doesn't improve on Eno's piece. I think in some way, it vindicates Eno's abilities as a composer.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2005-04-25

I have known the original Eno version intimately for years, so I approached this CD with a question: Does it add anything to the original? The short answer is one part does, two maybe do and one part doesn't. The first part (arranged by Michael Gordon) is the least satisfying. It doesn't seem to add anything to the original Eno version apart from an unsettling deep piano chord at the start. It sounds awkward and clumsy, and it lacks the smooth beauty of the original. Part two consists of mostly aetherial voices, as did Eno's, but on this version David Lang has fleshed it out with subtle additions that work quite well. Third section brings out a slight jazz flavour to the original, which is interesting although I have yet to decide whether I like that angle or not! The best part is the final part, which certainly adds to the original Eno composition. Eno's rich, chorale of synths has been enhanced by the addition of some interesting instruments, e.g. plucked instruments, that really brings out some novel textures in the piece. So, overall, three stars - one for each reasonable piece on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Takes the recording out of the studio.......2003-09-26

By taking Brian Eno's legendary ambient cornerstone album "Music for Airports" out of the studio, i.e. by recording it with live musicians in real time, avant-garnd ensemble Bang on a Can present us with quite a masterpiece, considering the original work was conceived as a piece solely with synthesizers and tape loops in mind (and at hand) when the music was first put together over two decades ago.

After interpreting works of the great minimalists Steve Reich and Terry Riley it would only seem appropriate for them to be the most appropriate pick to give new life to Eno's seminal ambient work, and they do an extraordinary job at it, in my opinion. The result is an album (an exec. production by Philip Glass, by the way) that is true to the source while adding new instruments to it in a process that counted with Eno's blessing all along the way.

5 out of 5 stars not what i expected!.......2003-05-15

so, i bought this CD thinking i was getting the 'brian eno' version... but no; it was the 'bang on a can' version! hmmm, 'bang on can' doesn't exactly conjure up "ambient" music.
well, i gave it try and man am i impressed! i'm not sure how this stacks up to the original, but this is awesome mood music!
highly recommended! ranks right up there with eno's "apollo" disk.

Album Description

Mark Lemhouse's debut album, Big Lonesome Radio, breathed fresh air into the traditional blues world, earning a pair of Handy award nominations including "Best New Artist Debut." But like the great roots innovators who inspired him, Mark Lemhouse is a restless spirit who can't be confined to any one corner of the Americana landscape. His highly-anticipated follow-up, The Great American Yard Sale, finds the genre-defying guitarist plugging in and heading out to the Great Wide Open, armed with banjo and electric lap steel as well as his deftly fingerpicked National guitar.

The "Yard Sale" of the album's title suggests the diversity of the album's musical mix, which simultaneously reflects and upends influences ranging from Dock Boggs to Johnny Cash to Tom Waits. For Mark Lemhouse, it's OK to look back as long as you don't stare, and the voice most clearly heard is his own. Strong, new originals like "Scarlet", "Paper Sack", and "Never Me" explore dark themes of addiction and self-destruction, while "The Queen of Easy Street" and "You're a Bastard" bristle with Lemhouse's trademark brand of wry humor. Iconic and ironic, Great American Yard Sale is sure to become a modern roots classic.

Mark Lemhouse:
The Great American Yard Sale:
Yellow Dog Records 2005

I was talking with a friend the other day and I mentioned having trouble writing about the new Mark Lemhouse album. My friend, who has listened to The Great American Yard Sale as well said "why? Are you too startled by its greatness?" Yeah. I am. Maybe startled isn't the word because after his first album Big Lonesome Radio I expected good things in the future from him but dang, who knew? I sure didn't want to sell the man short. But like Yellow Dog Records label mate Chris Cotton Mr. Lemhouse has done his fair share of record Listening and knows how the history rolls and how to rock it. The Great American Yard Sale starts out deceptively enough with Scarlet. A sweet and innocent little banjo line then Lemhouse drops a rump shakin' wallop that recalls to me photographer Bill Steber's shots of the big beautiful ladies movin' and grindin' slow and low down in the jukes of North Mississippi. Mr. Lemhouse and his band lean down in on that greasy good groove thing and, in the words of the great T-Model Ford "Let it all hang in!" Lemhouse follows that with Paper Sack, a lament that ol' Tom Waits would dig. Lowly swangin' on the dirty money and peppered with accordion, banjo, and brushed drums torn up with sweet little guitar solos that Chris Issac could only pray for. I'm Worried is a tight sad country blues with living room harmonies. A banjo plus acoustic guitar piece that, like the previous song lays nicely textured `tho this with the sweet wash of a low flute and cello that combines brilliantly with Mr. Lemhouse's delicious rural city picking. It may be just the anthem you need. Leroy Feller's blues gallops down that hard lonesome road called women. "Nothing on this earth is promised. "No guarantees no reason why, you don't get nuthin' for your trouble, but all the angels sing about you when you die". It's a damn shame John Cash never got the chance to cover it. Never Me is a more traditional country blues made well done by Lemhouse's dark `shine and oj voice with banjo that ol' Dock Boggs or Charlie Poole would have appreciated. Several tracks on Lemhouse's second timer have an undeniably sexy groove-on but none more so than his reworked traditional Cluck Old Hen which carries enough draggin' it in the dirt swagger within its "When the Levee Breaks" steel-toed boot stomp to replant the southern Mississippi delta. Twice. Lemhouse and his band with Scott Bomar on bass and Paul Buchignan on drums and such know how to run that steamin' Memphis hot chicken down. Salem is a haunting melancholy song that sings of the miserable dreariness of autumn and winter in that Oregon capital city. Lines like "Six months to daylight in this town" and "I'm as cold as rock in the shade" sure as Lemhouse's acoustic and lap steel and Amy Severin's lonesome cello bring the bone rattling chill right off that ol' Columbia river. The Unofficial Ballad of Story Musgrave with Mr. Lemhouse on lap steel and acoustic backed by Charles Norman on occasional percussion is not just another song to remind you that there can never be enough country songs about wanting to be an astronaut. This track is followed by The Queen of Easy Street which in a perfect world would be a bigass hit single and would do for Lemhouse what similar odd tracks have done for the likes of your Counting Crows or your Wallflowers. But this ain't no damn perfect world and thank the stars Brother Lemhouse knows it. So after the lovely track 11 "Hazy" which would almost fit nicely on a Nick Drake LP comes You're a (...). A full on country rocker that oughta be the world's hottest download and be boomin' from trunks and ipods all life long. It's the new Take This Job and Shove It. It's your new song to play each day as you light that delicious first smoke after work. It's the song to play as you pull into the lot of your next crap job. It's a song Toby Keith wouldn't the okie (...) to cover. It's the theme song for every damned one of us that actually has to work at work. With this album Mark Lemhouse joins a rare group of fine artists like Drive By Truckers, Black Diamond Heavies, Chris Knight, Tarbox Ramblers and others working American music today that's as classic and timeless as it is of the Now. It's soulful, haunted, strong and smart music that is being heard by far too few people and that's a damn shame. The Great American Yard Sale ranks somewhere in my top three for album of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, Lemhouse comes through with a home run........2006-01-20

This Album, not only tops his first critically acclaimed CD, "Big Lonesome Radio," but he succeeds in showing more of himself to the listener. He's a true songwriter and musician. Reminds me of a Daniel Lanois produced album to some degree. Lemhouse is a truly gifted musician and it shines through on every track. He's always taking you interesting places in his songs. This guy can say alot with a few well written lines and a whole bunch more on his instrument. Exellent CD.

If you need to transform a negative mood into a joyful frolic, enjoy this jovial anthology of top tunes from the 17th century . These exquisitely executed pieces magically transport you to a 300-year old musical event, with an irresistible and beguiling puckishness. The real sensation is soprano Custer LaRue-- quel nom!--who appeallingly dissolves the borders between classical, folk and pop through her heartfelt phrasing and everywoman tone. With musical aplomb, a well-focused sound and teasing vibrato, she charmingly communicates comprehensibly and directly the stories of another universe. This thoroughly enjoyable musical experience is a must have for all types of music lovers. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Fun, frolicsome and utterly delightful!.......2002-11-29

The six member Baltimore Consort combines voice, wooden flute, recorder, bagpipes, rebec, lute, viols, cittern and Baroque guitar into a "broken consort" (a group of instruments that are not all the same kind)(obviously) to whip up spirited improvisations of popular Renaissance ballads and dances from England. A "Playford tune" is one that was published by John Playford in 1651 in his musical anthology, "The English Dancing Master". What is particularly wonderful to those familiar with English Country Dancing is to hear soprano Custer La Rue sing some of the ballads related to favorite dance tunes. Especially fun are "The French Report", "The Joviall Broome Man", "The Famous Ratketcher", and "The Beautiful Shepherdess of Arcadia". If you like these ballads, you may also enjoy the Baltimore Consort's "The Art of the Bawdy Song", with guest singers the Merry Companions, as well as the Toronto Consort's album "Mariners and Milkmaids: Ballads and Dances from 17th-Century England".

a trip to Killburn

I am crazy about Custer LaRue, and the Baltimore Consort. I am not crazy about jazz. If I wanted to hear jazz, I would buy a jazz CD. Reasonable? I have never particularly desired to hear what a cittern or lute sound like in a jam session. In track 9, unfortunately the title song, I can do without the jamming.

But don't let that stop you from enjoying this CD.

4 out of 5 stars playful.......2000-06-14

This collection features some of the most playful songs that the Baltimore Consort have ever recorded. These tunes, published by John Playford in 1651, are like a greatest hits collection from 17th century England. All of these tunes are entertaining. Some of my favorites are: Beggar Boy, A Scots Rant, and The Famous Ratcatcher-featuring typically brilliant singing by Custer LaRue (she is the queen of this kind of music). This is another great album by the Baltimore Consort. Buy it.

Saul is one of Handel's most dramatic and touching oratorios. Saul's insane jealousy and its tragic results are movingly told, with rich characterizations for the main characters and some of the composer's most colorful music. The addition of a carillon is exotic and flavorful; the trumpets and drums are exciting. McCreesh underlines the drama with his orchestra's crisp attacks and the chorus has real personality, whether in the songs of praise or the laments. Neil Davies' rich bass is remarkably expressive and fluid as Saul, while countertenor Andreas Scholl is triumphant as David; his tone is rich and full, capable of expressing anger, grief, loyalty. Mark Padmore uses his lovely, pliant tenor with warmth as Jonathan, and Susan Gritton's Merab is stunning. The rest of the cast is as emotionally involved as they are musically, which is to say, magnificently. John Eliot Gardiner's recording on Philips is excellent too, but this one beats it by a slim margin. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Beyond beauty in the realm of English national emergence.......2006-11-23

From the very start you know you are entering a masterpiece performed by one of the greatest living conductors. First the use of instruments. Each one has a particular part to play and, even in the most unified tuttis of the orchestra, each instrument plays its role and can be followed faithfully without getting lost in some kind of blended melting pot. This is admirable from the opening notes right on till the end. Then Handel uses voices in a very creative way too. David is an alto, which is normal in the 18th century since he is the hero and no one is going to cast a shadow on him. The alliance of this alto with the tenor Jonathan or the soprano Michal, or even the antagonistic soprano Merab, leads to giving each voice a real dramatic depth. The two sopranos are not used the same way since they are opposed in meaning, in attitude towards David. But there is another level that is Handel's mark on the operatic music of his time: the use of the English language. He has been able to capture the very harmony of the language itself and he casts his music, his singing, his variations inside the stress patterns and rhythm of the language and detonates the poetry of words in perfect tempo with the beauty of notes and intervals. Even the difficult English diphthongs flow into the music naturally and so fluently they seem to have been invented for the music, though it is indeed the reverse. Finally, before speaking of the message carried by the opera - or oratorio if you prefer - I have to emphasize the fact that this is a Biblical episode that is essential in our culture. It is the famous battle between David and Goliath, an archetypical episode in our civilization, as well as in the Bible. The little one against the big one. The plebeian one defending the realm. The weak one using his intelligence and skills to defeat the powerful one. We have to add to this the semitic stone civilization is defeating the northern Philistine metal civilization. And of course we have to think of the last descendent of David's line, Jesus. David is thus the embodiment of Jesus in our heritage, and, today probably more than in Handel's time, David has been immortalized by Michelangelo's carved representation of David killing Goliath with a stone and then using Goliath's own sword to behead him, just like Solomon will hire metal craftsmen from the north to build the Temple, hence using the skills of others, foreigners, even enemies to strengthen the faith and the realm of Israel. In this opera Handel concentrates on Saul's fall and the annunciation of David's rise. Saul is shown as jealous, insecure, full of anger which leads him to rejecting the basic rules of Israel and God, exemplified in Saul's recourse to the witch of Endor. Handel makes this witch a tenor, hence a man, and McCreesh identifies him to the High Priest by having only one tenor for both. The meaning is simple. God knows everything and is everywhere, and everything that exists is God's creation, even what is condemned by Israel's law. Yet we have to go beyond this simple religious fable and understand it is the national theme emerging in England that is really dealt with here. A king must be truthful, humane, law abiding, god fearing. A nation must support their king if he is what he should be. The king is the emblem of national identity. Thus Saul becomes the negative emblem of the Stuarts of old, and thus this opera is revolutionary, the continuation of the Glorious Revolution that has rid England of these Stuart kings. Yet the national identity of England can only be found in David's descendent known as Jesus, hence it can only be founded on Christianity.

5 out of 5 stars great work from Jim Steinman.......2006-06-16

Jim Steinman, known for his operatic-style rock music (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.) has shown a more classic style of him in this one-of-a-kind musical. He takes several styles from the Civil War era and twists them with modern musical treatments.

You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.

If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I got the rights!.......2004-05-26

Upon hearing this musical I loved it so much I went out and got the rights to direct it onstage this October in Cincinnati! I was always a fan of Jim Steinman's music, but I now also have a great respect for the lyrics of Ray Fox. Fox is a wordsmith much in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim, with intricate wordplay and quick patter. I would suspect that it was his early work with Fox on this project that led Steinman himself into developing into a world class, phrase twisting. lyricist himself. And of course you have Steinman's great ear for melody, but with a much different feel than his Rock music. A great lost treasure of American theater (come see it in October!)

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-04-02

One of the undiscovered classics of the century. I hope to produce the first Australian production in November 2005. This show has a long and winding history, but I'll leave all that to the liner notes. Ray Errol Fox is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. I have never seen another talent like him - expect for Rupert Holmes - and these are the men I hold among my chief inspiration. Jim Steinman, the composer, whom many of you will remember from Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has actually re-used many of these tunes in his subsequent projects. If you want the original version of his closing song from Pandora's Box, listen to Track One. "Milady" and "Something of this Masquerade may Follow" were re-used for TANZ DER VAMPIRE. Thank God this was finally released. It's a beautiful, heroic and courageous, discovered-at-last masterpiece of American musical theater.

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-03-07

When a friend gave me "The Confidence Man" as a Christmas gift, he advised me that I would be in for a treat. I was somewhat skeptical since I had never heard of it, but since it was based on a Herman Melville novel, I was intrigued. And it had music by Jim Steinman. I liked the story, of course, and the music, but it was the lyrics (by Ray Eroll Fox) that captivated me. They are witty, literate and consistently surprising. I find something new to admire every time I listen. Anyone into American musical theater shouldn't be without this one!
