1 out of 5 stars You can't go back.......2007-06-17

Truly awful. If you listen carefully, you realize that these guys knew exactly four chords and used them faithfully. Actually, that is remarkable in itself, in a way.

Bought this in a fit of nostalgia. As Peter DeVries said, "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be." And this proves it.

Buy something new. You'll play this once, and never again. It is a CD that is bound for Goodwill, since it's probable no one would buy it at the yard sale.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, the Troggs recorded other songs than just "Wild Thing".......2005-08-05

The Troggs are rock 'n' roll immortals on the strength of one song, namely their only #1 hit single, "Wild Thing." This is, of course, the three-chord song that Jimi Hendrix was playing at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival when he set his guitar on fire and what the Cleveland Indians play every thing "Wild Thing" Vaughn comes in to the game to pitch in "Major Leagues." With the Troggs we are talking proto-punk, and the only problem with "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best ofthe Troggs" is that we only have 11 total tracks here, which is barely enough to give you a taste of what the group really sounded like once you got beyond their signature song.

The problem with the Troggs is that once you get past "Wild Thing" most people will be hard pressed to name another song the group recorded and the best offerings here are certainly not similar to "Wild Thing" in sound. "Love Is All Around" is their second best song, the only other Troggs tune to crack the Top 5 in the U.S.A., and it is a flower power ballad, which is as far from caveman rock as you can get. "With a Girl Like You" and "I Can't Control Myself," are the best songs on the next tier, and the common denominator is that all three of these songs were written by lead singer and guitarist Reg Presley (Chip Taylor wrote "Wild Thing," originally recorded by a New York group called The Wild Ones). So the big irony with the Troggs is that their signature song is the musical exception to the group's sound. However, there is a commonality in terms of their lyrics, where Presley often manages to introduce an element of lust in the equation.

The Troggs were formed in Andover, England, and were always much more successful on that side of the Pond (the group rarely toured in the U.S.). However, by the 1970s they were on their way out, mainly because they were keeping things relatively simple at a time that progressive rock was sweeping the English music scene. This hits collection does give you a taste of what else they did, and although it is is missing their covers of "Good Vibrations" and R.E.M.'s "Nowhere Road" from the later years it does have "Night of the Long Grass," which makes this collection slightly better than their other main hits collection.

3 out of 5 stars British garage rock .......2005-08-02

The Troggs were a British garage rock back that also had its fair share of bubblegum tunes and ballads. Of course, they're best known for their garage rock anthem "Wild Thing" which knocked Tommy James' "Hanky Panky" off the top of the Billboard Top 40 chart. It was written by an American, Chip Taylor who also had a huge hit with "Angel of the Morning."

The Troggs also had one other huge hit, the ballad "Love Is All Around" which peaked at #2. I've heard this song a million times but I never realized it was them. The rest of this 11 song collection is a mixed bag with the strongest cuts being the very catchy "With A Girl Like You", "I Want You" which sounds like "Wild Thing" meets "Louie Louie" and "I Can't Control Myself". This song was banned on many American radio stations as being too orgasmic. You mustn't ever be too orgasmic.

4 out of 5 stars British Invasion beyond the two U.S. hits.......2004-03-18

The Troggs may be familiar for their garage rock anthem, "Wild Thing," and their post-Summer-of-love 1968 flower-power hit "Love is All Around," but there is more to be heard in between - something that Oldies radio's tight playlists doesn't reveal to modern-day listeners.

Mercury's eleven track collection provides several of the missing pieces, starting with the band's five UK-only chart hits. These include the stellar "With a Girl Like You," the Chip Taylor penned "Any Way That You Want Me," and the superb bubblegum-pop "Give it to Me." Also included are the Louie Louie styled rocker "I Want You" and the original ballads "Little Girl" and "You Can Cry if You Want To."

Though they never achieved the fame of contemporaries like The Kinks, The Troggs certainly had more to offer than a pair of hits would lead you to believe. This collection takes in the obvious highpoints, which is probably enough for those just wanting to get beyond the shorthand of Oldies radio. All tracks in gloriously punchy AM-ready mono!

3 out of 5 stars Sounds like an old 45 on a cardboard box record player.......2004-10-16

The music in this collection is great but the audio quality is just plain bad. I am no audiophile - tone deaf as a tin can - but even I can hear the poor quality of this one.

I suppose that, because of their relative obscurity historically, there just may be no better quality original tapes to start from.

I don't regret buying the CD but, unfortunately, I will have to keep spending on The Troggs in the hopes of finding something that is of better quality.

5 out of 5 stars Love is all around these wild things.......2004-01-18

The success of Wet wet wet's cover of Love is all around, featured in the soundtrack of Four weddings and a funeral and which spent many weeks at number one in the UK charts, sparked interest in the original sixties version by the Troggs, whose style was raw rock'n'roll. Their lead singer, Reg Presley, had a distinctive, suggestive style.

The Troggs began their run of chart hits with Wild thing, a novelty song that reached number two in the UK but topped the charts for six weeks in America. By the time it peaked in America, the Troggs were on their second UK single - With a girl like you, which went all the way to number one. Thus, they occupied the number one positions in Britain and America simultaneously, but with different songs, but they never reached number one again in either country. Nevertheless, the had several other major UK hits including Love is all around, I can't control myself and Anyway that you want me, all of which made the UK top ten, together with the top twenty UK hits Give it to me and Night of the long grass.

This collection includes all the essentials. The Troggs were a somewhat odd sixties group but that's why they are worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation for an excellent band.......2003-09-24

The Troggs were one of the greatest rock bands of the sixties, but these days they have become forgotten. Why? THESE GUYS ARE A GREAT BAND! The mere fact that their music has become forgotten fills me with rage, because it's about a thousand times better than the junk that gets radioplay these days. This is their best known hits compilation. Read on for my review.

    PROS:
-If you're the casual fan of the band, it's doubtful this compilation will fail to please you, because both of the band's big hits, Wild Thing and Love Is All Around, are here for your listening pleasure.
-A plethora of underrated masterpieces can also be found here.
    -This is an affordable compilation.
-Most major retailers of compact discs carry this compilation, so you shouldn't have to look to hard for it.

    CONS:
-There's really only one thing wrong with this compilation - its running length. It's only about thirty-five minutes long, and you can fit eighty minutes onto a single CD. They could've fit TWICE as many songs on this CD as they did.

    OVERALL:
If you're a casual fan of the band, then I suggest picking this up. This, my friends, is REAL rock and roll, not the junk that's been flooding the mainstream in recent years.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For................2003-07-17

The troggs did several "must have" songs from the 60's. The essential "Wild Thing", plus gems like "Love Is All Around", "With A Girl Like You" and "I Can't Control Myself"..... A while ago I bought a budget Troggs hits record, and was mighty ticked to discover it wasn't the "real" versions of the songs. Clearly the right singer (at least) but equally clearly remakes.... and bland ones at that.

Well, THIS IS THE REAL (ORIGINAL) RECORDINGS. This is a great way to get these ultra-classic songs into your collection, along with a big chunk of other examples of mid 60's English rock.

5 out of 5 stars Doin' the Wild Thing.......2003-02-22

The Troggs are almost considered a one-hit wonder for their famous "Wild Thing" [not to be confused with Tone-Loc's song of the same title]. Who else had a sound with a tasty metallic edge, and also managed to get all the way to #1 on the charts with a truly funny seduction song? (The Kinks "A Well Respected Man" and Dedicated Follower of Fashion" were more at social satire, and thus 'half-serious'; plus they didn't make it all the way to #1. But doesn't "A Well Respected Man" have an utterly astonishing sound to it!?!?)

In our new era of nearly indestructible media, it's conceivable that "Wild Thing" will live forever . . . any healthy 10-year old [or hormone-raging teenager] hearing it from now until eternity will instantly identify with, and cherish it.

What's not usually known about the Troggs is possibly the most titillating rock song of all time ["I Can't Control Myself"], and possibly the best slow love ballad of the psychedelic era ["Love is All Around"]. The lyrics and the playing/singing of "I Can't Control Myself" still get my chakras spinning pretty fast. Some well-crafted rhymed lines (there are plenty more good ones): "your slacks are low and your hips are showing"; "this kind of feeling can move a nation" - but it's also how they are sung, and how they jam out from their musical context. The song is a strong tonic. To hell with Viagra . . . just play this song a few times!

And "Love is All Around" still makes me melt. What are its nearest rivals for best radio rock ballad of the late 60's? Right off the bat I think of "Time of the Season" by the Zombies, which, however, is a little quick-paced to be considered a true ballad, as is Johnny Rivers' "Summer Rain". There's "Get Together" by the Youngbloods, truly a heavyweight contender. Tommy James and the Shondells had a brace of terrific slow tunes. The Rascals' offerings, however, are also a bit too quick-paced to qualify. What about "Something" by the Beatles?

"Something" (by the Beatles) is like a 60's upgrade (gorgeous as it is) of Bing Crosby (gorgeous as he sounded some twenty years before); it is good enough that it easily transcends the era from which it has sprung. For our purposes, the Troggs' ballad goes one better, serving as a steady conduit by which the sense of eternity which expressed itself in late-sixties music and culture can still be heard and felt (especially by many of those who lived it). It channels the energy of the late sixties like a true icon of the era, as much as "Something" overflows those half-dreamed boundaries. The greatness of the Beatles' multi-temporal eclecticism notwithstanding, my vote goes to "Love is All Around".

And let's not forget that the Troggs were one of the inventors of British punk . . . which as it were, was not really invented, but sort of 'sprang from the earth'. The Who, the Kinks and Them came before the Troggs; and we can't forget the Rolling Stones, the Animals and the Yardbirds [though these three had a more bluesy than a metallic edge]. Then there were literally dozens, possibly even scores of American bands (starting in '66 or even earlier) playing off the energy and sounds of these influential British oracles.

By the way, (if you have never listened to it) the song "Night of the Long Grass" is NOT to be missed!

...However the one I have is on BigTime, printed in West Germany. Made in Holland, and has 20 tracks on it. I must've bought it over 10 years ago because it was the first Troggs CD I had ever seen. It says AAD, and I suspect the analog is because they recorded all of them, or nearly all, from old vinyl and scratchy 45's. I like all the songs but the sound quality is so bad that (although it is the Troggs garage/primitive sound) it is so bad that I hardly ever listen to it because it gives me a headache. Buy the newer box-set instead.
