Fantastic!.......2007-06-24

Having seen Ralph's World clips on the Disney Channel, I decided to give this cd/dvd a go. As soon as I popped the dvd in, both my children were mesmerized. My one year old stared through the first two songs (she doesn't care for tv usually) then hopped up and started bouncing and dancing. My four year old made me repeat the dvd 4 times! The songs are catchy and fun without being annoying. My husband and I catch ourselves singing the songs even when we aren't listening to them. My only complaint is that I wish the dvd was longer. The cd is nice to listen to at home or in the car, and I can listen to every song unlike many other children's cd's I own. This is a great buy!

Too bad talented song-writers don't always recognize that their voice / singing do not do their songs the best justice. Whenever we play this, someone loses it and turns it off within two songs. It's just that annoying. Too bad, the songs are really good.

I LOVE this CD - and having a DVD with it is an extra bonus for us! What a great idea Ralph. We listen to this in the car and my 3 yr old always asks for Ralph's World. We're going to see him live soon and I can't wait too!! The songs are catchy, creative and fun.

Grammy winner (for 2001's Halfway Tree) Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, the youngest singing son of the immortal Bob and brother of Ziggy, Julian, Stephen and Ky-mani, has made a major splash in the family business. The confrontational title track of his third album (which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at Number 7, the biggest opening week ever for a reggae artist), deals with vacationing "haves" partying on the backs of increasingly desperate "have-nots." It has fomented a storm of protest from corporate entities who claim that Marley has presented his homeland (or more accurately, their interests) in a negative light. Another high point is "Pimpa's Paradise," a heartbreaker about drugs leading to prostitution, backed by a vulnerable-sounding acoustic guitar. Produced by Damian and Stephen Marley, it's an eclectic, sophisticated mix, constructed over treacherous rhythmic undercurrents, illuminated by empathy, courage and soul. I really like this album, because Damian throws in a lot of different styles and techniques, which can uncommon with some reggae artists. I believe that these different styles are an advantage, because it keeps the songs varied and diverse.

I listen to this album A LOT! Enough said. I think Jr. Gong gets better and better with each album. It's really neat to see how he has matured as an artist. I think Stephen's production and vocal skills are also proven excellent. Much respect to Damian and Stephen, they continue make their own legacy of music.

Damian Marley's not his daddy. He's got his own new flavor. He covers a lot of stylistic ground and lyrical topics from love to politics. If you want a break from radio hit hacks like Justin Timberlake, pick up Damian's newest and roll with the Jamaican edge. I can't wait till he puts out another CD.

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

When I heard these words, the first of the first song, I was completely hooked.

It's a great album, full of 1960's-sounding music, but with themes from the 1990's and 2000's. Every song's a winner, with lyrics that stick in your mind.

i love this cd. fountains of wayne are more versatile than you'd imagine -- they span everything from country-like rock to punk rock to acoustic. and the lyrics are beautiful, as well. go fountains of wayne!

A little uneven, but there's still some great songs to be found........2007-02-19

WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS opens with a series of clever rhymes (or near rhymes as the acceptable equivalent) in the song "Mexican Wine" a bit of nonsense that sets the tone for this one. From the slacker salesman in "Bright Future in Sales" (Really reminds me of some old Nick Lowe) to the hopeless dreamer trapped in "Hackensack," there are a lot of great characters here. This one even has a hit for a band that deserves it in the form of "Stacy's Mom," a quirky look at teenage lust. But sometimes the songs land flat, like on Halley's Waitress" that stretches the metaphor way too far, "Hung Up On You" with it's forced twang, or "Peace and Love" that could be taken with tongue in cheek or not; it's just too earnest to convince. Then you hear something like "Valley Winter Song" or "Hey Julie" and all is forgiven. This is a band that's just hard not to like.

Fantastic album.......2006-12-20

I was not too impressed on my first listen, but by listen #3 was hooked. The more I've listened to this album, the better it sounds. I initially thought the latter half of the album would have been better left off, but how wrong I was. Even the country song (#11) has a strong pop melody to it, and I am definitely NOT a fan of country music in general. The only songs I'm not crazy about are Fire Island and Peace and Love (#s 12 and 13). All the songs (even those 2) will stick in your head -- Fountains of Wayne are definitely experts at crafting a good pop song. There are so many great songs on here that it's hard to pick favorites, but Mexican Wine, Hackensack, Valley Winter Song, and Supercollider (#s 1,4,6,& 15) are definitely on my favorite list, as is Stacy's Mom. I am a 49-year-old woman and had some reservations about the lyrics of the latter song (it doesn't seem like something a grown woman should be listening to or singing!), but the music is so nearly perfect that I purchased it despite those reservations, and I'm very glad I did. This album is probably the best music purchase I've made in years and is sure to be enjoyed by Baby Boomers who miss the good pop songs of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

This is so far the best CD from Fountains of Wayne. It's filled with so many strongs songs. Some of my favorites include "Bright future in sales" and "Hey Julie". One of my all-time favorite lyrics is from the song "No Better Place":

"And the bourbon sits inside me
Right now I'm a puppet in its sway
And it may be the whiskey talking
But the whiskey says I miss you every day"

I had the pleasure of seeing FOW and a small club in Atlanta, Ga called Smith's Ole Bar. I was tickled that with all the volume coming from that stage, the vocal performance was very "subdued" and it occured to me that the true star on that stage was the lyrics of each song.

It's About Time!!!!!.......2007-07-01

I've been blessed for years by the preaching ministry of Bishop Noel Jones and have always been anticipating the album debut of his choir(whom I'd only heard at a glance via his television broadcast and on his documentary, the Hoover Street Revival). This album has been a long time coming and since purchasing it I can't put it down...strong classics for those of the Gospel persuasion, praise and worship persuasion, and even of the reggae persuasion. And in addition to highly anointed contributions of members of his praise team and choir, the project features cuts with Donnie Mcclurkin, Deitrick and Damita Haddon. Wow. If you want a little extra you may want to purchase the Wal-mart version that features a free dvd(videos and the sermon, "Focus" by Bishop Jones). If you've been blessed by the releases of Bishop Jakes & the Potter's House Mass Choir, Bishop Eddie Long and the Total Praise Mass Choir, and others...the debut of Bishop Noel Jones & the City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir is a must have. I know where I'll be churchin' whenever I visit the City.

Awesome, this cd is one of the best gospel cd's, or any genre, I've heard in a while. Great worship and praise in combo with great beats, energy, and encouraging lyrics that will uplift the soul.

If you enjoy Good Gospel Music & buying a CD where every song is a blessing then I would strongly suggest "Welcome to the City". I have never Purchased a CD where I enjoyed Every Song until now. This Choir is truly anointed. God Bless.

Composed by longtime Elvis Costello keyboardist Steve Nieve and set to a surreally episodic, multilingual libretto by his life partner, Muriel Teodori, this singspiel/dramatic oratorio describes the obsessive passion of an opera-loving steelworker of Greek extraction (Sting) for a diva (Barbara Bonney), a not-unheard-of situation in either real or reel life. Although Dionysos (the hero) seems to hover on the edge of becoming a textbook psycho-stalker (the cover photo of a hard-hat kissing his saw does little to dispel this impression), all ends well, if unbelievably. Blue-collar boy not only narrowly avoids incarceration (Elvis Costello appears as a police officer) but even gets next to the ermine-collar girl. Scored for string quartet with piano and reed improvisations, the work's avowed raison d'être was to allow voices from various backgrounds, classically trained and otherwise, to encounter one another on a level playing field. This might have been more successful if the singers were better matched in terms of texture and production. As it is, the sopranos soar effortlessly, allowing the music to do the work, while the male pop stars take the opposite approach, working up a sweat at the drop of an emotion. Musically, despite arresting juxtapositions between conventionally melodic power-pop and 20th-century atonality--to say nothing of a blazing concluding "yes" sung by all involved--the composition comes across more as a study in parallels rather than a unifying force. But even so, the point does get across, and so ambitious and heartfelt an adventure is always worth checking out. --Christina Roden

A thoroughly fascinating piece of work.......2007-06-12

In the few weeks I've had the disc I've only heard it in part ; in the background as I worked , reading etc. This evening, for the first time, I played it through in full, no distractions except for occasional glances at the sun setting over the distant Wicklow mountains and trees behind Foyle mansions. Such undivided attention brought in to focus a thoroughly fascinating piece of work. A collection of voices blend with the subtlest of instrumentation to tell a simple story. Once it's accepted that no hugely groundbreaking piece of social commentary is part of the package ( I mean that as a compliment) it is possible to get totally lost in it.

Earlier 'distracted' listening had me thinking Elvis Costello's contribution was too loud and just not right. However it's with his abrasive introduction from track 10 - 'Troublemaker' ( such an apt title!) - onwards that the show really kicks into gear. He is the 'grit' that contrasts so tellingly with the artfulness of the other contributors. It leads into a six track sequence that, in it's build up of emotion, is stunning.

Robert Wyatt is the star of the show. All the others are excellent but it's contribution that keeps popping up in my memories , especially 'Happiness'.

In short this is a album that has to be listened to in full to get it's proper effect. None of your in-ear , train/car journey etc. background listening ; in a room , on speakers , loud. It's a circumstance that can be a bit of luxury in the frantic pace of life but , in this case, well worth the effort. Sympathetically produced, it would make a great stage-show. Well done, one and all.

A passed experiment.......2007-05-25

Steve Nieve and Muriel Teodori spent 10 years on this project. Very well spent time! They had a lot of hard times, obviously it wasn't a simple project. Bringing together great classical and jazz-pop artists to record an "Opera" isn't a thing you can easily do. But for their and our luck they finally succeded. I had to check twice who was singing the first track, 'cause I couldn't believe it was Sting. And notice I love Sting from 1980. The most moving track is number 3, Grand Grand Freedom. It is sung by Robert Wyatt plus Sting and others. I found myself almost in tears from commotion. His fragile voice is so poignant, so evocative you can't remain insensible. And Sting singing "and Mozart" during the Workers song is simply sublime. The story is simple but multi-layed. I strongly recommend it. Just don't expect a simple song's collection, but don't be scared by the idea of a modern Opera. Chapeau to Steve Nieve and Muriel Teodori and all the great singers and musicians that realized the recording. I wished there will be a teatrical representation sooner or later!

I Don't Like Metal but i LOVE THIS BAND.......2007-07-09

OK, just so you know where i'm coming from, i'm a huge be-bop jazz and classical music fan and i think Zeppelin, Kiss and Queen just plain SUCK (yeah yeah, write me nasty email, see if i care)

I *DO* like Motorhead and the Ramones a lot though

and i LOVE Kyuss. of their three CDs (Blues for the Red Sun, this one and ...and the circus leaves town) this is probably my favorite because it's a bit more daring

THese guys were just wonderful, loud as hell, grungy thrashing pounding slamming over the top but with some with and cleverness and NONE OF THE POMPOUS B.S. you find with most metal/loud bands: no big hair, no makeup, no skin tight clown outfits, no lame overtly sexual lyrics, no fire eating or hanging from wires when they played, etc. Just guys doing it really well

Sonically i think my aforementioned faves Motorhead and the Ramones are probably the best reference points here. Kyuss was simple, stripped down, bass heavy.

This album basically has 3 songs - they are 'suites' made up of several songs that run into each other. while they grind out some hot effin' riffs and can run full tilt at fast tempos, they also catch you off guard now and then by slowing it down or setting the song up with a quiet-ish, slow-ish intro that suddenly explodes into high volume

Ok, it's official. This is the best Kyuss album. No doubt about it. Josh Homme's low-tuned riffage, Scott Reeder's Geezer-ish bass lines and fills, Brant Bjork's energetic drumming, and the stoned voice of John Garcia all combine into one energetic groove of an album.

From the opening notes of "Gardenia," this album grabs you and never lets go. There are different atmospheres throughout the whole cd. With songs like "Supa Scoopa" and "Whitewater," the feel is agressive, yet mellow too. Other songs like "Space Cadet" feels like a calm wind blowing by. Other tracks like "Conan Troutman" and "100o" are pure agression. Yet there is a cohesive flow to the whole record.

While some people might complain about the album being tacked onto 3 tracks, I love it. I think that each part has a powerful beginning, a cool middle, and an explosive ending. It works on that behalf.

So, if you're interested in entering the world of Kyuss, get this album, or their other masterpiece, Blues For The Red Sun. You can't lose.

AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC FOR THE GENRE.......2007-01-02

Kyuss are the pioneers of "stoner rock", and this recording not only represents the pinnacle of accomplishment for Kyuss, but for the whole somewhat obscure, certainly unappreciated, and ill-named genre. However, personally I would not purely categorize Kyuss as stoner rock, and Welcome to Sky Valley is just great rock, period.
I would describe this album as down-tuned guitar distorted thick and sticky molten hot groove riff-laden badassness! If you listen to this CD and don't get how good it is do yourself a favor and listen to it a few more times, it grows on you quick, and as is recommended in the CD booklet listen without distraction.

Listen Without Distraction.......2006-02-17

On the inside of the CD jacket there is a quiet suggestion that says something to the effect of "listen without distraction". When I first heard this album nearly ten years ago, I sat down to give it a try, and as "Gardenia" began to build I found myself slipping away into a familiar state of ultra peaceful contentedness that I rarely get with albums anymore. Even though I had never heard this album before that moment, it felt like I had been listening for years.

"Welcome to Sky Valley" is a 1994 release from Kyuss, a united effort by John Garcia (later singer for Slo Burn and Unida), Josh Homme (yes, QOTSA Josh Homme), Nick Oliveri (also in QOTSA) and Brant Bjork. Kyuss is raw in a simple (and beautiful) way. Many bands have a distinguishing characteristic that separates them from others, usually a single item that makes them stand out. *Everything* about Kyuss stands out. They are (were) a raw, rockin, metal, jamming kind of band that blends many styles seamlessly into something new. Gardenia, for instance, breaks out into a 2+ minute jam where Josh Homme overlays two tracks of wah with his guitar, one to keep rythm, the other to harmonize. With judicious use of his ride cymbals, Bjork keeps a continuous thread of heavy drumming which weaves it all together.

One thing that stands out about Kyuss is the low, gritty, gain-all-the-way-up-on-a-tube-amp sound of Josh Homme's guitar. "Welcome to Sky Valley" is a bit more refined than the powerful "Blues for the Red Sun", but the often drop-D tuned melody is still there, a modern shadow of Black Sabbath, except better (?). A bold claim, I know... but possibly true. Rumor has it that Homme played his guitar through a bass amp to get that sound. I learned guitar while alternating between Zeppelin and Kyuss, and one thing I picked up fast was Homme's technique of using the low octaves of the key to add space to the sound. Playing "E" in the seventh fret while resonating the open "E" on the low string adds much more to the chord than simply playing an "E" chord in the second fret, and this simple techinque is the basis for much of Kyuss' sound.

Throwing Kyuss into the CD player never disappoints. I especially enjoy it while driving (fast).

Doyle Bramhall certainly has impressive rock & roll connections. His father played drums for Lightnin' Hopkins; Texas-born Bramhall himself has served as guitarist behind Jimmie Vaughan in The Fabulous Thunderbirds and alongside Charlie Sexton and Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section, Double Trouble, in Arc Angels. However, anyone who buys Welcome looking for a companion piece to Texas Flood is likely to be sorely disappointed. This is defiantly unreconstructed rock & roll, all growling vocals, pounding four-square drums, and interminable guitar solos--matchstick models of sailing ships have been made in less time than it takes Bramhall to get from one end of "Thin Dream" to the other. It is done quite well, as these things go, and may find favor with fans of fellow blues-rock revisionists The Black Crowes. Ultimately, though, there's not much here that you wouldn't find in any truck-stop bar north of the Rio Grande and south of Chicago. --Andrew Mueller

Bramhall & Company.......2007-03-19

This is a solid effort by a solid guitarist. This album reminds me A LOT of Ian Moore's "Modernday Folklore", where it mixes a lot of blues and modern day guitar-rock that is produced to a quality finish. Key standouts are "Green Light Girl" and "Cry". If you want to hear a smokin' version of "Green Light Girl", check out the live performance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Benefits DVD where it's performed with Robert Randolph - it's an AMAZING version!!!

This CD makes me drive my car way too fast. Enough about putting Kenny Wayne Shepherd in the same par as Doyle. Kenny Wayne's a boy, but Doyle is a MAN.

This CD has everything from soulful vocals to electrifying guitar. Admittedly, when I first heard Doyle's voice, I wasn't too impressed. The guy grows on you though. He is absolutely the most commercially under-rated musician EVER. Give this CD a chance. He definately has something, and when you see him in person - he blows you away.

Doyle Bramhall II and his band Smokestack pretty much pile drive their way through this entire set of pulsing, droning, classic, old school blues-rock. And for many folks, the growling vocals, relentless guitar solos, and slamming drums equals audio nirvana. For me it equaled headache.

But as I recently listened to "Welcome" from start to finish, I found I wanted some space in the music, some chance to breathe, and some time to listen and anticipate what was next. The music seems oddly suffocating and heavy for all of its kinetic energy, like the hungry roar of a rock crusher being fed conveyors of freshly dynamited quarry stone. That is, all the songs pretty much sound the same---which suggests that Mr. Bramhall is content to play---and play well---but not to explore much beyond the somewhat tired playbook of this genre.

I've heard him in other contexts, e.g. Arc Angels, where his playing had more dimension and texture. "Don't Come Back" might be a better name than "Welcome" for this effort.

Stop messing around and buy this album!.......2006-05-24

I didn't think anyone made albums like this anymore! The album has the same feel and energy as Led Zeppelins first! Everything sounds live and in your face. It's like a combination of Led Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Vaughan with a little Jimi hendrix thrown in.
If you like classic rock music there is no way around this record!

WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE I loved that song to me it starts getting peacful with alices soft singing solos and the drums and the guitars start picking up and I don't know what they were but it sounded like trumpets during the middle of the song I loved it. Im not a really big fan of alice cooper there are just some of his songs I like. I don't know all these songs I just know this song but if there was a single album (which there isn't) I would just review it there instead of here. I have this song on a mix cd full of other songs which I love to listen while Im wasted.

ALICE COOPER'S PERFECTION.......2007-01-14

While Alice Cooper's pinnacle song is 18, his crowning achievement album-wise was Welcome to My Nightmare--his only time to achieve perfection.
Just as KISS hit their zenith with Destroyer, this is where Cooper becomes king of the mountain.
His first official solo album, he brings along a concept album that takes us into a maccabe world of paranoia, schizophrenia, and insanity. It doesn't matter what mood you are in, because there is a track or two for every emotion.
The title track is the perfect opener, starting quietly but builds quickly to a rock anthem. The only question remains: do we feel welcome in this nightmare?
Alice Cooper fortunately did not try to raise any consciousness, nor does he make a political or social statement. He simply has fun, albeit a melancholy, dark way. Think of this as Trick or Treat ... for the insane.
The first few tracks, Devil's Food and Black Widow give us the tongue-in-cheek humor Alice was known for.
Only Women Bleed is Alice's best ballad, revealing some talent ... but he is quick to return to the dark comedy with Department of Youth and Cold Ethel.
The best part of this album is the stretch of songs I like to call "The Trilogy." It begins with Years Ago, builds into the disturbing Steven, and ends with The Awakening. These songs are the most haunting, eerie tunes ever penned by a rock musician.
The finale, Escape, returns to rock form, but still leaves the listener wondering if Alice did indeed escape his insanity.
22 years later, it is obvious: Alice Cooper is never fully sane, and that is why we truly love him.

Alice Goes Solo.......2006-12-12

A new era starts for Alice. Gone is the original band as Alice goes solo teaming up once again with producer Bob Ezrin and new co-writer guitarist Dick Wagner to create Alice's vision of grand rock theater. "Nightmare" is considered a classic by most Cooper fans and indeed it is a great album albeit different from what his fans at the time might have been used to. The album is a concept piece revolving around the main character "Steven" (who is really Alice) sleeping through a nightmare...........or is it real? This album was conceived and written for the stage as Alice took a full theatrical production of this work on the road. Part rock, theater, Broadway, ballads, and even jazzy at times "Nightmare" covers a lot of ground. Several huge hits came from this album and they are all good ones. The title track with its horn section blaring out the main theme is very different from anything The Alice Cooper Band ever did. "Only Women Bleed" was Alice's first hit ballad. "Department Of Youth" was another big one that although a great song, does not really fit in the context of the album concept. The album tracks are mostly strong as well with "Devils Food / The Black Widow" still playing a part in Alice's set today. Vincent Price's creepy narration during "Black Widow" is a bit corny, but I get the feeling that is the way Alice wanted it to be. "Cold Ethyl" is similar to "I Love The Dead" from the previous album, only this one is totally done as a black comedy. The album closes with four songs that run together "Years Ago", "Steven", "The Awakening" , and "Escape" telling the story of Steven (Alice) and some of his mental.......lets say issues. The Steven character would show up on several later Cooper albums as well. For fans of progressive rock Tony Levin (King Crimson, ABWH, Peter Gabriel) played bass on this one. Although this album was a big departure from the original band's material it stands on it's own as a great piece of work.

Historically this is a better Alice Cooper cd b/c (I think) he made worse and worse stuff as time went on. After 1978, he was a parody of the once great artist that he was in the mid 1970's.

"Only Women Bleed" "Some Folks" and "Welcome to my Nightmare" are all good songs but, they are not even close to the quality that he did when Alice Cooper... the band was together. When compared to "Love it to Death" "Killer" "Schools Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies" this is a very lesser, embarassing work.

Remember, this was originally a raucous Detroit act compareable to The Stooges, Amboy Dukes and MC5. This was a Vegas lounge act by now. He would have been an MTV darling with this packaged lame excuse for rock music.

Unquestionably one of the albums nearest-and-dearest to my heart, it can instantly transport me through time and I'm a teenager again....which isn't to say I want to live in the past (heck, I like being middle-aged!) but it's a declaration of the sheer power of this album. Alice's greatest album, bar none....and that's saying alot.

This is one of those few-and-far-between albums that you have to commit yourself to when you fire up the stereo to listen to it: it just feels WRONG to interrupt it for any reason. (The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Imperial Bedroom" by Elvis Costello and "Ritual De Lo Habitual" by Jane's Addiction are others that fall into this category.) Every song is of the highest quality; there are no dips in quality in the entirety of this exquisitely well-written and performed drama. The Bob Ezrin production is superb, bringing Alice's vision to vivid, haunting life. The band is in total synch and at the top of their game. Alice growls, pleads, shrieks, mocks, whispers and raves with equal, mesmerizing effect, like a character actor running wild with the juiciest role of his career.

If someone told me I could only have 60 minutes of recorded music, the closing sequence of "Years Ago" > "Steven" > "The Awakening" > "Escape" just might make the cut. Alice Cooper at the peak of their powers, this amazing sequence can still produce goosebumps on my arms. The nightmare-carnival of "Years Ago", the glorious, powerhouse orchestration of "Steven", the creepy, childlike tinkling piano which introduces "The Awakening".....WOW, what a show! When the opening chords of "Escape" come bounding out of my speakers, I'm instantly on my feet singing along in delirious rapture. (This album has the very same effect on my older sister Cindy. Put it on and you won't find two happier people anywhere!)

"Welcome To My Nightmare" is indeed the stuff of legend and hopefully will be listened to for many generations to come!

It won't take you long after the opening strains of "Toby's back" from the opening track of Welcome To Diverse City to realize that yes indeed, Toby Mac is back with his second solo effort and follow-up to the superb Momentum. It's apparent from the beginning of this release that the studio wizard and third member of DC Talk is back in the house with another rich blend of rap, soul, pop, and techno. All the while, this DC Talk-er is laying down the gospel of one God, one love, and one people. Leading off with the smooth rap of "Hey Now," Toby Mac promises us to "set a new pace" because "it's been a long time comin' but I'm serving up the sequel." And serving up he does well with healthy portions of hard rock ("Slam"), funky soul with Bootsy Collins ("Welcome To Diverse City"), smooth pop ("Gone"), disco rock ("Getaway Car"), and biographical rap ("Gotta Go"). Building off his group and solo release experience (not to mention multiple production jobs for other artists), Toby Mac flows with a lyrical and stylistic consistency that holds together. Ultimately what he does so well is fly all the colors of the musical rainbow in one banner, seamlessly weaving different styles into one unmistakable flag. It's a mark all his own and worthy of merit in the Christian music world and beyond. --Michael Lyttle

DC Talk Vet's Second Solo Effort.......2007-05-21

While I was in high school and college in the early/mid 90's, I dived headfirst into Christian music. I'm not talking about Sandi Patti, Amy Grant, and Steve Green. I'm talking about rock groups such as Petra, PFR, acoustic rockers Jars of Clay and bands such as the Newsboys and Audio Adrenaline. The one band that I often steered clear of was DC Talk. Why? Because everyone I talked to would tell me that they were a rap act and, well, I really don't like rap that much. Well, when "Jesus Freak" was released, I took notice of DC Talk. They weren't just a rap band. They were much more than that. I eventually went on to purchase more of their work and came to appreciate their mixed bag of genres and even enjoy the rap tunes.

Although I haven't heard "Momentum," I decided to pick up "Welcome To Diverse City" because I heard "The Slam" on one of the "X" compilation albums. Tobymac is in top-notch form here. One of the greatest things about his music is that you cannot label it as just rap, rock, hip-hop, or anything else. He literally crosses multiple genres, often in the same song. Each and every song on this album is unique and at the same time equal to every other song on the disc. You'll hear rap, hard rock, traces of nu-metal, soul, hip-hop, and techno music. It's all delivered with a solid, Christ-centric message of love, salvation, and evangelization. My favorite songs include "The Slam," "Diverse City," "Catchafire" and "Burn for You."

If you enjoy today's many secular hip-hop, rap, and rock artists, check out Tobymac. His message is a positive one that you can actually play around the children without worry. It's nice to hear a guy with such talent using his skills to promote Jesus Christ. In a world of homogenized pop and rock (both secular and Christian), Tobymac is a breath of fresh air that deserves more attention than he is getting.

To the guy who wrote the last review where he states what he thinks of each song....Gone is about a guy who treated a girl wrong and she told Toby all about it...now he's singing that song to the guy who was "untrue" to his girl.....Listen to the words...

Awesome CD!.......2006-07-13

I had not expected to like this CD as much as I did. I had purchased it for my 12 year old son. But I found out that there wasn't a song on this album that didn't move me either spiritually or physically! I don't normally care for rap at all except for the song Diverse City. But this album changed that for me. Toby Mac has a sure winner here.
