4 out of 5 stars Different, but enjoyable, second entry by Switchblade Symphony.......2006-11-14

The reviews here saying this album is different are accurate. Some of the old sound shows through and Tina's voice is still dominant. I noticed a lot more use of non-word vocals such as "ah"ing and so forth that were not on the first album, and the sound itself is slightly less electronic in parts and weirdly electronic in others, not to mention a lot of sound effects and a voice clip or two.

It did take me a few listens to get into and overall I liked the first album better. "Rollercoaster," "Soldiers," "Rampant," and "Sheep" are standout tracks. "Witches" was almost embarassing to listen to, but in its defense, I still listen to it when nobody is around.

One problem I have is in my particular pressing. I'm not sure if I got a bad version or if they're all like this, but mine was not only missing the last track, the other tracks were mixed up. Some were correct and others were in the completely wrong place, so that "Sheep" was track 12(and thus actually "Fractal"). I ripped them and re-named them, but it took a bit to figure out which tracks were which, especially since the full lyrics aren't given in the book.

I'd say anyone interested in Switchblade should start with their first album. The 2-CD version with the bonus tracks is nice as the bonus disc has some good songs that (so far as I know) were never released on another album. If you really like the band and end up wanting all their releases, you'd have to buy it eventually anyway to get those tracks.

This is definately a decent followup and worth buying for those who enjoyed the first album.

5 out of 5 stars Continuation of Switchblade!.........2006-03-22

Lovely goth/ darkwave music from Switchblade! Although, their first was probably the best! This one still has as Tina puts it a great groove to it! Just lovely!...

1 out of 5 stars SOMEONE TEACH THIS GIRL HOW TO USE HER TALENT.......2006-03-21

OK. I have to say Switchblade Symphony has potential. That is about it. Other than that, the album is absolutely atrocious. The singer has a beautiful voice -but she also evidently is either really young or inexperienced/immature_THERE IS NO CONTENT WHATSOEVER TO THIS MUSIC> basically, she sings stupid, juvenile lyrics to an underdeveloped melody- but with a beautiful voice. DONT WASTE your money. This is produced at the level of eigth-grade 'goths'. INSECT is the only decent song on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Broken dolls and broken records.......2004-04-23

Very creepy in its own way. I love this album. Some fans of Serpentine Gallery have said Bread and Jam For Frances is disappointing. I disagree, but that's of course subjective.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid.......2003-03-09

This album has it all really. Hard to locate items this good without the heady critisism that often escorts experimental artists. Switchblade Symphony's often revered "Serpentine Gallery" showed us a very "goth" band and for fans of "Goth" imparticular find themselves fleeing to thier 'Christian Death and 'London After Midnight albums after hearing this one. You wont find a genre that this album obeys and when you decide music is simply either good or bad you'll most likely truley enjoy it.

Excellent dark melodies, eerie and childlike vocals, grooves remniscent of trip hop and rock psychedelia meet at a circus... a few small filler tracks... Yea this album does not sleep at all and is so very complimentary of what these girls can do. This album and thier follow "Three Calamities" are just about perfect albums. Very very rare indeed. These ladies of experimental mind have created some entirely outstanding music.

5 out of 5 stars Switchblade Symphony keeps growing..........2000-06-15

People think that a band has to keep the same sound from album to album, but I think Switchblade shows that they can change their sound and still stay the same band. Not as gloomy as Serpentine, but just as good and gothic in a new way. As long as Tina is singing and Susan is playing, they will always be Switchblade Symphony and always be a great band.

5 out of 5 stars Switchblade Symphony's best work! Witches is awesome!.......1999-09-17

S.S. is at its best and the music is very dancey and fun. It's lighthearted and deep at the same time. It's sympathetic and personal, yet quite hopeful and bright. Tina and Susan make a wonderful pair and are just releasing better and better material.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Delicious..........1999-02-20

I would have given it five stars, but there doesn't seem to be enough songs here... alot of filler for such a highly anticipated sequel... Alot of people are afraid of this one, growth has always been hard for the common people to swallow...especially in the highly-anal, goth scene...Momma, don't let your babies grow up to be Vampyres....but definitely, let them listen to this...good stuff...

3 out of 5 stars Tres Bizarre..........1999-01-15

I keep hearing about how this album does not compare in any fashion to "Serpentine Gallery," from far too many people. But, I am afraid, that, for the most part, I have to agree. Even with past singles, covers and other such things, this album seems to have wandered far from the technically and aurally lush soundscape that one came to expect from Tina Root and Susan Wallace. It does stand on it's own, if you have not heard anything else by them, but if you have, then you are more than likely going to be biased in favor of their previous work. Tina Roots vocals have become sparse and unruly and Susan Wallace's keyboard and programming work on this album starts to sounds a little like a girl mad at her Barbie piano with a few 80's throwbacks here and there just to make things...er... interesting?
