Customer Reviews:
One of the finest garage rock sets ever assembled. .......2007-06-07
Along with Nuggets and the Back from the Grave CDs, the first volume of the Essential Pebbles series is one of the greatest purchases that a garage rock fan can make. The two discs that make up this set are crammed full of brainbending mid-60s classics of the highest order. The songs are raw, crude, murderously energetic, and more fun than a roller coaster- in other words, everything that rock 'n' roll is supposed to be.
The first disc of the set is particularly impressive. It cobbles together 29 of the best tracks from the first ten CDs of the long-running Pebbles series, as well as three cuts from Ear-Piercing Punk, an offshoot of the series. These songs are simply astounding. The Preachers' cover of "Who Do You Love" opens the album with a menacing burst of drums, some filthy guitars, and an absurdly thuggish, greasy, mean-as-hell vocal. The Grains of Sand keep the party going with the hyperactive "Going Away Baby," which features an ultra-hip vocal and an organ solo that practically bounces off the walls of the recording studio. The Jujus' "You Treat Me Bad" is as absurd as it is catchy, thanks to its oddly appealing impish vocals and shimmering guitar line. The Haunted's "1-2-5" is a churning, greasy punk rocker with a nasty guitar line and a strutting rhythm section. The Wild Knights' "Beaver Patrol" is pure macho-posturing frat-rock, with a hilariously stupid vocal performance and a grinding R&B sensibility. The Lyrics' "So What" is a furious snarling stomper with some truly mean harmonicas. The Green Fuz's "Green Fuz" may very well be the greatest garage rock song of all time- it's inarticulate, deranged, played without an ounce of professionalism, and catchier than anything you've ever experienced. Crank it up. Teddy & The Patches "Suzy Creamchease" is a hilarious Frank Zappa ripoff with a brutal fuzz guitar onslaught, while T.C. Atlantic's "Faces" is a grooving acid storm with some truly trippy lyrics. William Penn V's "Swami" is a gut-bustingly funny piece of acid-rock-garage with some buzzing guitars and an addictive rhythm. The Tree's "No Good Woman" is a raving three-chord pounder with furious vocals, and the Plague's "Go Away" expands on the wildest aspects of the Kinks' early singles. The Gentlemans' "It's A Crying Shame" is a roaring stomper that begs you to sing along with it, and the Omens' "Searching" is a firestorm of swirling organs and roaring guitars. The Foggy Notions' "Need a Little Loving" is a (relatively) slow burning tune with some awesome, sensual vocals. Dean Carter's "Rebel Woman" is a classic piece of salivating desire, and the Lost Agency's "One Girl Man" is a sneering stomper of the highest order. The Trolls' "Every Night & Every Day" is a catchy three-chorder with some surprisingly funny lyrics. The Starfires' "I Never Loved Her" is quiter than some of the other songs here, but it burns with its own fiery intensity. The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondance" is a merseybeat popper with a shimmering guitar lick. The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody" is just plain astounding, a bewitching slice of Beatles-influenced folk rock with a delicate cascade of guitars and a wistful, haunting vocal. The Hysterics' "Everything's There" has what may be the single filthiest vocal performances in history, and the broken-glass guitar line is icing on the cake. The Good Feelings' "Shattered" is a spacey swirl of keyboards and crunching guitars, while the Breakers' "I Ain't Dead Yet" is a defiant rocker with a rumbling melody. The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" is one of the catchiest songs ever, a strutting popper that steadily builds in intensity. The Gonn's "Doin' Me In" is another one of those incredble garage rock epiphanies- it's a two chord punk apocalaypse with what can only be described as a gloriously desperate vocal. The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go" is a sneering, dissafected raver, and the Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough" pounds along with a smokey organ riff. Keith Kessler closes out the disc with the surging "Don't Crowd Me." So, yep, every single song on disc 1 is awesome.
Disc 2, meanwhile, brings together a bunch of incredibly rare garage rock tunes that've never been reisuued before. They're not all winners, but there are enough good 'uns (such as the Motifs' "Someday" and the Shays' brilliant "Brainwashed") to make it an excellent listen for both newbies and diehard garage fans alike.
This is one of Garage rock's very finest compilations, a testiment to the power of the music at its best. Nobody who's even remotely interestred in garage shoudl be without this.
Rock n roll insanity!.......2007-04-01
Bringing together some of the rawest, finest, and rarest sixties garage punk pounders ever put to vinyl, The Essential Pebbles Collection is a superb slice of rock and roll obscurity, an endless party of sneery vocals, fuzz guitars, and manic musical genius. The two discs found herin are every bit as wild, weird, and jaw-dropping as the album's cover art.
Disc one of the set is composed of 29 of the best songs from the first 10 CD volumes of the long-running Pebbles series. That means that you get such astoundingly good tracks as The Haunted's greasy frat stomper, "1-2-5," The Omens' barnstorming Farfisa organ workout, "Searching," and "Going Away Baby," a propulsive bit of car-chase mayhem courtesy of the Grains of Sand. Owners of the Nuggets box will be thrilled to hear the contributions from The Dovers and The Gonn, which are every bit as good as the ones found on that revered box set. The former's "She's Not Just Anybody" is a wistful, whispy, and genuinly haunting piece of garage-pop, while the latter's is an explosive two-chord stomper with some awesomely screamed vocals. The Preachers' rendition of the classic "Who Do You Love" is a vicious bit of apocalyptic watusi-fodder, with its caveman vocals and brutal guitar onslaught. William Penn V's "Swami" is a hilarious, catchy psychedelic anthem, with an awesome fuzz guitar break. Best of all is Randy Alvey and the Green Fuz's "Green Fuz," which very well may be the ultimate garage anthem. It's got it all: a dangerously simple guitar riff, bizarro lyrics, and enough catchiness to keep a pop radio station busy for decades (not that they'd ever play this song).
Disc two, on the other hand, is a collection of incredibly rare garage stompers, many of which have never been compiled. Highlights include the Shays' surprisingly intelligent "Brainwashed," the Missing Lynx's wistful, haunting "Hang Around," the Sinner's go-go French rocker "Sinnerisme," and "Go-Go Girl," one of three tracks so obscure that the artist is actually unknown!
Bottom line, Essential Pebbles Volume 1 is a superb introduction to the Pebbles series, and an awesome addition to any garage-rock library.
the unheard music is usually the best.......2006-09-17
Very enjoyable rock-n-roll. Any one of these bands could've made it big had they been in the right circumstances. I wonder what all these guys are doing now. This stuff is timeless.
time warp.......2005-07-06
What a surprise to discover that a song I recorded when I was 15 years old, in 1965, is selling on a compilation in 2005!!! I played the farfisa organ on "Searching" by the "Omens". We recorded this in a cramped, second floor apartment in Hammond, Indiana on a reel to reel tape. It was a wild time, playing teen clubs and sock hops, and paying WLTH DJ Ron Borden every $ we made to play the record on his radio show. This collection captures the vibrant energy of the 60's and showcases the raw talent that was rampant at the time.
Don't think twice about picking this one up!.......2004-06-07
It goes without saying, with a collection title like ESSENTIAL PEBBLES, each song should be a winner. Disc 1 collects the creme de la creme of the first 10 CD volumes of the PEBBLES garage/punk series, and not one of these songs is bad! From The Preachers' "Who Do You Love" to Teddy and Patches' "Suzy Creamcheese" to The Trolls' "Every Day and Every Night" to The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" to Keith Kessler's "Don't Crowd Me", all 29 tracks are a superb primer for the newcomer to the garage scene and will have you scrambling to get every volume of the PEBBLES collection (buyer beware: not all of them are this great). The last three songs, The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go", Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough", and "Don't Crowd Me", are from the EAR PIERCING PUNK CD, an offshoot volume of the PEBBLES run.
Disc 2 is where the collection starts to wane. Containing 26 rare 45's and acetates from around the U.S., including some groups whose names are unknown (!), this is the real reason that even those who have every PEBBLES CD will be in heaven with this set. Not every song on this disc is a classic; as a matter of fact, you might say some of them deserve to be left in the dusty vaults they came from. But the highlights include: The Motifs' "Someday", The Shays' "Brainwashed" (which is bleeped for profanity!), The Sinners' French-language "Sinnerisme", The Mixed Emotions' "Can't You Stop It Now", The Thunderbolts' "Heart So Cold", Peter and the Wolves' "Hey Mama" and "Only Everything" (a cover of Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything"), The Shades' "Down the Road Apiece", The Dynamic Nutones' "Sick and Tired", The Hustlers' "The Sky is Black", The Thorns' "I'm in Love", and an unknown group's "Fed Up". Unfortunately a lot of the songs tend to sound identical to one another, but the fact that they probably weren't heard outside of their particular region makes them a real treat to finally be able to experience!

Customer Reviews:
excellent music and recording; flawed manual search.......2006-11-06
These songs are the "correct" versions we heard on the radio in 1966, not trial versions that sounded different as so many nostalgia CDs use. The recordings are high quality and sound great. If you let the CD play on its own, all is OK. From about #8 on, if you try to advance to the next song manually, you get an error and the CD stops. Amazon cheerfully replaced my first CD but the second one had the same problem. I kept it because of the great music.
Worth Every Penny.......2005-06-06
This is an excellent compilation of selected original hits by the original artists. I purchased the album not knowing what to expect, but I found the quality and editing to be right on the money. I'll rank this CD up there with the very best compilations on the market. I hope that this studio will produce many more yearly compilations than they already have.

A Great Collection of Rare Garage Tracks.......2004-06-22
Upon first spinning this compilation, listeners will be struck by the audio quality. Certainly, the raw, grainy tone of garage rock is to be embraced, but the quality of the actual production here is definitely not up to industry standards. It's clear that these selections come straight from vinyl sources, and not master recordings. But you have to put that aside for a variety of factors. For one, the overwhelming majority of these tunes are not available elsewhere on cd. Secondly, it is highly possible that the master tapes for these records have either been destroyed or lost over the last 30+ years. Keep in mind too that these hail from small local labels of the era.
With all of that said, once the music is actually moving the molecules around in your room, you will easily overlook
the sonic shortcomings of the recordings presented here. Each track is a gem, and as a whole, the compilation presents fifteen unique, yet consistent-sounding songs spanning 15 years. A track by track analysis isn't necessary, although I will say that The Yo-Yo's take on Billy Joe Royal's "Leaning On You" is nothing short of a masterpiece. That track alone makes this a worthwhile purchase (and admittedly, was my personal motivation for seeking it out). My only real complaint is that, clocking in at 33 minutes, the second volume could have easily been placed on the same disc.

Amazon.com essential recording
There are several collections that cover the Isley Brothers' early years, but this is the one to own because it pulls tracks from several labels and mixes major hits and obscurities in an interesting way. Seminal cuts such as "Shout," the frantic "Nobody But Me," and "Twist and Shout" (later copied almost note for note by a little group in England called the Beatles) belong in every record collection. So do "Testify" (which contains the efforts of a young guitarist named Jimmy James, a.k.a. Jimi Hendrix), "Who's That Lady" (the prototype for the group's '70s smash "That Lady"), and some of the group's efforts from their Motown years, such as "This Old Heart of Mine" (later a hit duet for Ronald Isley and Rod Stewart) and "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)." --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Happy Birthday Ronald"Mr.Biggs" Isley.......2005-05-22
longevity&Long term careers are often taken for granted. the Isley brothers have been around for so long it is truly incredible. they started out with some Hits&Various Labels until everything fully came into gear.it was cool to hear the ground level version of the Isley brothers.hearing Ronald Isley from the 50's onward is just amazing at how strong His voice has held&Been smooth. this is the start of One of the Greatest Rock bands Ever.
Now wait a minute!.......2004-03-08
This CD features Isley Brothers recordings from the years before they started their own record label, T-Neck Records. It spans ten years and seven record labels. The Isley Brothers had limited success during these years, which may explain why they changed record labels so often. But they still managed to record many great songs which have come to be regarded as classics. The best known songs are "Shout", "Twist and Shout" and "This Old Heart"; but all the songs are great. Even their cover version of "Rock Around the Clock" rocks! This is the definitive CD of the Isley Brothers early years.
OK, but..........1999-07-27
What happend to "Put a Little Love in Your Heart"? Damn it! Don't they always find a way to screw up these anthologies?
Shout, Twist and Shout, and This Old Heart of Mine on one CD.......1999-05-12
Rhino gathered up all the good Isley Brothers songs from their early career on one CD. (Good thing, too - I was despairing of ever finding Shout on a decent disk.) They bagged virtually every decent song the Isleys did over that period (including "Behind a Painted Smile," a major Motown UK hit, and "Who's That Lady," which they remade in the '70s with great results). Decent liner notes, fun photos (they were smoking cigarettes and performing simultaneously?). Good CD.

great cd / great sound.......2006-01-04
This CD is great! Sometimes when you buy a CD you get stuck with newer re-recordings or the sound quality is bad. NOT SO with this collection. I love every song (except that song by the soul sisters - where did that one come from). Most of the songs are in stereo. And heard in stereo for the first time. Love the stereo mix on The Raider's "Kicks" and Shagralas "Remember walking in the sand"
ACE Sets the Standard for Sixties' Reissues.......2000-07-22
Using the blueprint from their enormously successful Golden Age of American Rock 'n' Roll (1954-1963) series, ACE Records now turns its attention to the second half of the Sixties (1964-1969) with the first installment of their Chartbusters series. You get a 20-page full-color booklet filled with info on the bands and their songs, original hit versions taken from the best source tapes possible (most in stereo), and a whopping 30 songs and 79 minutes of mostly Top 20 music. [Exceptions: The Soul Sisters' "I Can't Stand It" barely cracked the Hot 100 and the Seeds' garage classic "Pushin' Too Hard" stalled at No. 36.]
As would be expected of any comprehensive overview, there are numerous music styles represented. You get the Tex-Mex sound of the Sir Douglas Quintet (with the late Doug Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers) on "She's About a Mover." The goodtime sound of the Lovin' Spoonful's first hit "Do You Believe in Magic." The blue-eyed soul of Mitch Ryder's "Jenny Take a Ride!" The lush harmony vocals on the Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'." The baroque stylings of the Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee." The California sound of Ronny & the Daytonas' "G.T.O." Barry McGuire's protest anthem "Eve of Destruction." Paul Revere & the Raiders' anti-drug song, "Kicks." The funk of Sly & the Family Stone's "Dance to the Music." And the hits just keep on coming. There is not a bad track on this album. [Here's the rest: "Brown-Eyed Girl," "Wooly Bully," "I Fought the Law," "Games People Play," "Gimme Little Sign," "Elusive Butterfly," "Working in the Coalmine," "Hi Heel Sneakers," "Treat Her Right," "Hawaii Five-0," "Green Tambourine," "On the Road Again," "Psychotic Reaction," "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)," "Soul Deep," "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," "The 'In' Crowd," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Expressway to Your Heart."]
ACE has certainly raised the bar when it comes to reissues. [I'm not aware that Rhino has ever put more than 20 songs on a single disc.] If you love Sixties music, you have got to own this CD. All I can say is, when can I get volume 2? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
A 30 Track Sixties Summary.......2000-02-09
Another winner from the ACE label of the UK. This time, they have turned their attention to Top 100 American-originated Rock and Roll/Soul/Pop from the years 64-69. This contains 30, rpt 30, songs, nothing terribly obscure (maybe the Soul Sisters "I Cant Stand It") All classic (though I could do without "Eve of Destruction"). For the price, you cant really do better to get the mood for your Party! Other Standouts: Sir Douglas Quintet's "She's About a Mover", Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought the Law", Lee Dorsey's "Working in a Coalmine", and I could go on. Outstanding sound, and copious and informative notes! Well, what are you waiting for?

Maximum Louie Louie!.......2007-04-07
One sign of a great song is that it can be successfully performed by different performers in wildly divergent styles. This collection demonstrates that Louie Louie is one such song. Take what I think are the three best versions on this collection: the Sonics, the Sandpipers, and Black Flag. First, the Sonics version is pure, rough garage rock, which sounds as fresh now as it did in 1967, when the song first appeared on the album The Sonics Boom. Next, the beautiful a capella version by the Sandpipers -- in Spanish! -- makes the song sound like a lullabye. Finally, the song sounds amazing as hard core punk by Black Flag. These versions alone make this collection worth owning, but all the others are great as well.
If Louie Louie is one of your favorite songs, OR if you consider yourself a music fan, you should pick this one up.
The ultimate rip-off, no wonder it's out-of-print.......2007-03-20
It's unusual for Rhino to offer such a meager amount of music. At 23:46 it's the worst value I've ever seen. Also, the liner notes trace the history of Louie, Louie but never mention any of the versions on the CD--no recording dates or anything.
"Love That Louie" has 24 songs and is still in-print. It also includes much better versions of the song such as that done by Toots & The Maytals and The Raiders.
Me gotta go.......2004-01-24
This is a really fun CD. With multiple versions of the "frat rock" national anthem, what's not to like? Here is a little info about the different versions of "Louie, Louie" featured here:
1. The Rice University Marching Owl Band. This marching band version was later featured in the film The Naked Gun.
2. Richard Berry. This version by the song's composer is not his original recording, but a remake.
3. Rockin' Robin Roberts. This version inspired the Kingsmen's version.
4. The Sonics. The Sonics were the hardest rocking of the '60s "Nuggets" type groups.
5. The Sandpipers. This "latin lounge" version was the only other version of the song to hit the American Top 40.
6. The Kingmen. The version you know and love.
7. The Last. Performed in the style of the Doors.
8. Eddie & the Subtitles. On the original vinyl version of this album (which I own), there was a version of "Louie, Louie" performed by legendary punk band Black Flag. On the CD release, it was replaced by a version of "Louie, Louie" performed by obscure punk band Eddie & the Subtitles.
9. Les Dantz & his Orchestra. Performed in the style of "Let's Dance" era David Bowie.
10. The Impossibles. This is "The Hallelujah Chorus" with the words changed to "Louie, Louie".
There you have it. If any if that interests you, I recommend getting this CD.
A great eclectic collection.......2002-12-03
For fans of the best song ever, this has some fantastic recordings of Richard Berry's classic three-chord song. This also includes a version done by Richard Berry himself, which is not the original recording (as the other reviewer has posted) but rather a carefully crafted re-recording, attempting to sound as close to the original as possible. This was due to a dispute between Mr. Berry and the owner of the original recording. Having heard both, the differences are minimal however, and Rhino did an excellent job of capturing the original sound and feel.
There are some really rockin' versions of the song (I really like the Sonics') and just a bit of novelty, particularly the "Hallelouie Chorus." OK, it's a little funny, but loses its charm on the 4th or 5th listen.
Make sure to look up volume 2 of Louie Louie, another excellent compendium.
A Wonderful Tribute to Song Writer Richard Berry.......1998-10-11
Coming originally from the Pacific Northwest, I can't resist picking up anything that has the song title that ALMOST became the state song of Washington, Louie Louie. This is a fine collection of variations on Richard Berry's song. I was pleased with all the selections contained in the CD, but was especially pleased to find versions by the boys from Tacoma, The Wailers with Rockin Robin Roberts, and those other boys from Tacoma, The Sonics. Best of all, this CD contained the best version of all... the original by Richard Berry. I know one CD could not contain all my favorites, so my disappointment about not finding the version by Paul Revere and the Raiders was minimized. This CD is a definite "gotta buy" for any fan of the song Louie Louie.
