5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.

5 out of 5 stars I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

5 out of 5 stars 1966..Great year of songs........2007-01-05

All the hits and then some. Besides Winchester Cathedral and Wild Thing,
you can hear Loves makes the world go round and Double Shot, two one hit wonders that make you wonder why they did not go futher. Finally, i get to hear Walking my Cat named Dog by the obscure Norma Tanega, a folk-singer and party buddy to Dusty Springfield and Martha Reeves. I play this tape and Vol. 1 often and it probably has to do with graduating from middle school and entering Freshman year. Forever good tunes and Forever young.

5 out of 5 stars If you're after the flavor of 1966 pop music, this is the CD you want!.......2006-03-25

1966 was a special year for me. That year many of my friends and I awaited being drafted, which almost certainly meant a tour in Viet Nam, an odyssey which began for me in August of that year. The songs on this CD are the ones that lightened the times for all of us in that era.

I'm a stickler for getting original recordings on CD, something which is getting rarer and rarer, especially with all the K-Tel and other releases consisting mostly of inferior sounding remakes. However, this CD seems to have all the original sounds I remember listening to in my first car (red '62 LeMans convertible) crusing around a year after graduating from high school. Additionally, there are several very-hard-to-find singles on this disc for which you'll pay a 'scalper' on this and other websites a lot of money for a rendition on another CD.

As to the fidelity, I can only say I'm very happy with the sound given the age of the original recordings. The Artwork and insert are minimal, but contain several interesting facts on some of the songs & artists represented on the CD. For example, it mentions the murder of the lead singer of the group who recorded "The Cheater," a song on this disc.

You won't be disappointed with this one. Well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not as essential as you would think.......2004-06-11

The "music fan from CA" is right: most of this music is obscure for a reason. It's simply not very good. After the incredible ESSENTIAL PEBBLES VOL. 1, where every single track was a surefire winner culled from the first 10 CD volumes of the PEBBLES series, I was really looking forward to popping this into my CD player. Unfortunately this was a major let-down; selecting songs from the PEBBLES LP's that haven't seen CD release yet, if these are the best of those, I'm not looking forward to those LP's seeing the light of the digital age.

The few good songs include: The Rogues' "How Many Times", Neal Ford and the Fanatics' "Shame on You", The Jelly Bean Bandits' "Generation", Sonny Flaherty and the Mark V's "Hey Conductor", The Live Wires' "Love", The Inmates' "More Than I Have", The Kama Del Sutras' "She Taught Me Love", and The Sweet Acids' "That Creature". That's 8 out of 26 songs that you'll find yourself glad you listened to. The rest are disposable.

If it's possible, the CD starts out at a good pace and each song progressively gets worse as the running time gets longer. Do yourself a favor and wear out your ESSENTIAL PEBBLES VOL. 1 CD rather than even consider the idea of purchasing this one. For hardcore completists only, who I expect will probably only give it a listen and toss it onto their shelf to collect dust.

Disc 2 holds some minor interest to collectors, as all 29 songs have never been reissued anywhere. Tracks actually worth hearing are: The Purple Haze's "Shades of Blue", The Dawn 5's instrumental "Mike's Bag", Denny Noie and the Catalinas' "It Ain't a Big Thing", The Fading Tribesmen's "More Feathers", and The Spires of Oxford's "But You're Gone". However, none of these songs are even all that memorable. Again, like CD 1, each song gets progressively worse as the disc goes on.

All in all, this is a supremely disappointing package that only hardcore completists will want to add to their collection. "Essential" is the one word that will NOT pop into your mind while listening to this misfire collection.

3 out of 5 stars Obscure for a reason.......2000-12-27

I picked this up because I already own the original Nuggets album, the original Pebbles Vol. 1 vinyl album, and the Rhino Nuggets box set. I liked most (not all) of the songs on those albums, and the good stuff on those was really good. I thought that this CD would be more of the same good stuff.

Well...some of it is salvageable, but I am sad to report that most of these are obscure for a reason: namely, they stink! Unfortunately, there are very, very few undiscovered gems on these 2 CDs. Most of it is stuff by bands that very much deserved their obscurity. These songs are very inferior to the best garage rock of the '60s -- sometimes painfully inferior.

There are an absolute ton of recycled Yardbirds and Kinks riffs here -- and a little of those go a long, long way. (The cover of "I'm a Man" by the Baker St. Irregulars is a good example of a cover version that makes me want to scream "Give it up, guys!" and sends me scrambling for my original, vastly superior Yardbirds version of the song.)

Only for serious archaeologists.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-09-16

Picking up where volume 1 leaves off, "Pebbles Vol. 2" continues to dig deep into the bowels of garage rock to find the tastiest leftovers from those bands with no names, and what a collection it is!

Very few Beatles clone bands made it like the Knickerbockers, the Beau Brummels, or small bands like the Gants, did, but what the collection showcases is that whether in NYC or LA or a town of 50 people, the music was infectious, and the results are pure magic. Their names may be lost to history, but the music lives on, and its MAGIC to listen to!

Brian Eno once said that very few people listened to the Velvet Underground, but they all went out and formed a band because of them.. who knows, perhaps these tasty nuggets of Anglophiled Americana will cause the next great wave in music, as well..and it couldn't happen soon enough!!

Mange and bon appetit!!

5 out of 5 stars Peter.......2000-04-21

This is pure rock 'n' roll perfection. This collection demonstrates where the roots existed of what we consider "classic" today.

5 out of 5 stars More Raves From Daddy Rollin' Stone!.......1999-11-23

While the Beatles and the Byrds were hitting the main stage; meanwhile Back in garage land the long, shaggy-haired, pre-Mansonite hipsters were trying to impress Mary Jane with the cave stomping send -ups in their best Kieth Relfian manner! Ahhh, sit back, drop a tab and relax!

And now, because you haven't heard these songs enough... Boy, what would life be like if somehow you got to own the licensing rights to this stuff? These are the songs that shake the rafters of every arena in America, getting crowds rowdy and psyched up while simultaneously getting people to look very foolish on JumboTron screens. There was a time when these urgent, driving classics could have been judged on their own momentum-filled merits, but now they're simply the soundtrack to the most mundane keggers. It's also a good dating test--if your date is enjoying the tunes, time to move on--and a way to get in touch with your inner frat boy. Fine sound. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Sports songs new & old are winners!.......2006-02-25

The songs on this disc are often heard at sporting venues. The one thing that has bothered me about this series are the cheesy transitions from one song to the next. Crowds cheering, etc. does nothing to enhance my listening enjoyment. In fact, it detracts from it some because I want to her clean intros to the songs. Other than that, this disc is great! The songs cover a wide range of eras and relate well to a variety of sports.

This is bringing the sounds of the stadium right into your own home, for better or worse and minus the beer vendors (unfortunately). However, it's great to clean your house to, perfect for slam-dunk-the-wastebasket accompanient, and the absolute best thing to listen to before you run your first marathon. I'm surprised, yet pleased, to recommend it!

The Kingsmen were a good "garage rock" style band in the 1960s. The were arguably the most successful of the garage bands, since they had seven songs that made it into the Hot 100. This album is a typical one for them, since it contains two chart singles and a bunch of cover songs of other people's hits. Other than the hits, "Little Latin Lupe Lu" and "Death of an Angel", the highlights here are the three original songs that are included ("Long Green", "And You Believed Him" and "Give Her Lovin'"). Singer Lynn Easton was actually a decent, if derivative, songwriter. As for the cover songs that make up the bulk of the album, they are okay, for the most part. But none of them come close to matching the versions that were recorded by the original artists. Unless you are a big Kingsmen fan, you would be advised to get a "best of" CD, rather than one of their original albums.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Collection of Hits .......2005-04-06

It took five years for ACE Records to release a sequel to the the initial CHARTBUSTERS USA, but the wait was worth it. This is a thoroughly satisfying collection of hits from 1963 to 1969. ACE has used the highest quality source material available and you get a whopping 29 tracks. [Not even reissue king Rhino Records comes close to putting this many songs on a single disc!]

A few of these songs were not huge hits: "Harlem Shuffle" was a huge hit in England (home base for ACE), but it barely made the Top 50 here. Likewise, the Gants' cover of Bo Diddley's "Road Runner" peaked just outside the Top 40. And Ike and Tina Turner's "I Can't Believe What You Say" only reached No. 95 in 1964.

However, this diversity of big hits and near misses only adds to the charm of this eclectic batch of songs. You not only get the No. 1 hits ("Good Lovin'," "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Mr. Tambourine Man" among them), the million-sellers (including "Dancing in the Street," "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Time of the Season"), but you also get seldom anthologized songs like Jerry Jeff Walker's 1968 version of "Mr. Bojangles," The Bobby Fuller Four's follow-up hit "Love's Made a Fool of You," and Tony Joe White's swampy "Polk Salad Annie." You also get four instrumentals that--aside from "Classical Gas"--rarely get anthologized. The other three are "Mission: Impossible," "Watermelon Man" and "Batman Theme."

In addition, ACE provides an informative 18-page booklet that details the artists and songs. Lalo Schifrin, for example, was at one time Dizzy Gillespie's musical director and scored the soundtracks for "Cool Hand Luke" and "Dirty Harry." Bobby Hebb wrote "Sunny" as a tribute to his brother who was killed during a mugging. John Fred had released 15 singles over a ten-year period before attaining one-hit-wonder status with his sixteenth release, the No. 1 "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" in 1968.

While many of the heavy hitters are missing (Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, etc.), there are enough sheer delights to satsify any Baby Boomer looking for a quick Sixties fix. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
