4 out of 5 stars Dark, deathly techno, before Delerium went pop.......2006-07-26

An older EP, this reminded me not just a little of Front Line Assembly's "Colombian Necktie" EP, right down to the mysterious and portentious use of movie sound bytes on the different tracks.

Fans of Delerium's later albums like "Poeme" will probably be offput by this EP's dark, repetetive synthetics. There is no Sara McLaughlin cameo here to rescue this EP from an unquiet grave.

I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Euphoric EP ~ Delerium.......2005-05-19

Eurphoric being Deleriums 1991 EP can be said to be a mix of many sounds. Take some parts FLA, some intermix and some olde delerium and you have this EP. It is the begining of the new delerium sound and I find that it is more experimental then previous releases with samples and better sounds and beats. Not that the older recordings are bad by any means, it is just that Leeb and Fulber seem more and more comfortable in the studio and this shows with a more experimental approach to their music.

3 out of 5 stars yes and no.......2004-02-24

Although i am a great fan of older delerium(with every release i become more disstanced), this is one of the disks i listen to the least. Mostly because the first two tracks fail to do much for me. Mixing exessively industrialesque beats with rediculious samples, they seem like they should have been b-sides off a FLA release. Despite that, this is worth having in any true fans collection, just for the epic track "Grave Mentor." This fifteen minute track reminds me of some deeply macabe soundtrack. Slow and methodical. Finishing off the release is the quiet "Sorrow" it's a herald of dreams. Play the second half before sleep, and you will drift to an interesting place.

If you enjoy this, i would suggest looking up "Stone Glass Steel" or possibly even "Ambre"

4 out of 5 stars Early Delerium.......2004-02-12

This CD is enjoyable as it shows fans the beginnings of Delerium as a experimental frontline industrial sound. I enjoyed the tracks of the CD and would say for anyone to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the industrial-era Delerium.......2002-04-29

Before Bill Leeb needed to pay for a new house with albums like Karma and Poem, Delerium was an experimental electronic ambient force to be reckoned with! This album is sublimely tortured and very recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Hallelujah - give praise to the music.......2000-06-11

The Happy Mondays were at the front of the musical movement in the early 90's known as Madchester; listening through Hallelujah, it's easy to see why. It has all of the essences of dance and indie rock melded into perfect form. The guitar and atmospheric sound make a perfect musical landscape and also show the similarities of the Mondays with their peers, The Stone Roses. However, Shaun Ryder's vocals aren't as atmospheric as the rest of the music. Perhaps because I was first a Stone Roses fan, I prefer the opposite airy vocal approach of Ian Brown. Because of its popularity at one of the local clubs, my preference is the Club mix of Hallelujah versus the MacColl mix. "Clap Your Hands" has a catchy feel to it, but then following it is "Holy Ghost" which isn't much to comment on. "Rave On" shows definite shades of the mid to late-80's, although the club mix of this song (track 6) outshines the original. The true gem of the album, though, is the club mix of the title track. It has a perfect blend of new-age-style gospel background, catchy loops, various guitar effects and a simple but fun bassline. In fact, the last half of the album is full of dance-inducing melody; try listening through tracks 5 to 7 for the perfect 'Mondays set.

          Product Description

Shipwreck have some ambitious plans. They plan on releasing four EPs, one every four months for the next year and a half. The band is alight with inspiration and ready to deliver. The first installment in this masterplan is the gem that you have presented here. The House of Cards EP is a promising peek into the delightful world of sound that Shipwreck has planned for seekers of well-crafted song. Those interested in straight up rock and roll, shoegazer atmospherics, mixed with a folkish marinade of storytelling, roll up your sleeves and give these boys a listen. The titular track, House of Cards, gets things started with a blast of charged air, like a barroom stomp, culminating in a whirlwind of voice. Sexy and relentless. Atlantic weaves a lovely dark tale of those who are waiting impatiently to leave the world of the dead. Alias, the third track on the EP, splits hairs with a group of confused lovers, and ultimately leaves the party stubborn and busting at the seams with frustration. Finally, Black Moon wraps this collection up with a heartbreaking tale of leaving the living world by one's own hands and not being responsible for such tragedy. House of Cards EP is quite a sophomore offering from such an exciting foursome. Look forward to some more mindbending thrills in the next few months.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Their best hand yet...".......2006-12-01

Like the doorways on the front cover, the songs on House of Cards are doorways in their own sense. The creative yin and yang between the band's two principle storytellers, John Owen and Harman Jordan is contrasted well on this EP which spins back and forth between the former's allegories and the latter's fables.

The CD begins with the drum bounce of "House of Cards", a party anthem that could be taken as the band's vis-à-vis with Champaign's rock standard-bearers The Living Blue. Though the song's on the surface seems like a sultry rendezvous, underneath this lies contempt for this superficial way of life, as evidenced in the chorus, "It all falls apart / This house built of cards / Little white lies." A crackling guitar snarl drives the point home.

The next song, "Atlantic" is a picturesque glimpse at the supernatural that misconstrues phantoms and angels in the same sense that "Subterranean Homesick Alien" mistook aliens for angels. "See them walk along the dewy lawn like moving pictures / As they pass the fixtures flicker." Musically, the song reflects the uplifting (though ultimately misplaced) hopes - between reverse-cymbal breaks, the surf guitar passages are some of the most heartrendingly transcendent that Shipwreck and or any other band have reached. To concede without spoiling these glimpses of beauty, it closes with a welcome piano coda that cleanses the palate.

"Alias", the band's challengingly dark piece is also here, though it lacks some of its previous idiosyncratic charm (references to Judas and Janus, strumming above the top fret, etc.) Owen introduces a tableau of unsavory characters reminiscent of Jean Pierre Jeunet's "Delicatessen," then warns, "Watch out for no one, and cut straight to the prize." It's satisfyingly confrontational with a sinister, double-dealing bassline at its peak.

Lastly, "Black Moon" comes into view in a chilling depth of clarity. In terms of production, this is Adam Schmitt's (Hum, Absinthe Blind) finest moment on the EP, vocals, bass, drums, and movements of cello isolated to resonate within the song's atmosphere of dismay (a bit unusually "Comfortably Numb" for Shipwreck). Delay and tremolo effects soak through the guitar as Jordan's persecuted voice draws attention to the cryptic phrase "a season with a perfect lie."

House of Cards is a new level of artistic maturity for Shipwreck. While their influences are numerous and you can point to moments that reminisce of many bands - the steady flirtation with pedals and occasional guitar jangle of Radiohead or The Chameleons, Owen's vocal similitude to instances of The The or Jordan's gritty closeness to The Meat Puppets. But the exciting thing about Shipwreck is how they bring these to the table in an altogether new and different way in each song - this House of Cards is their best hand yet.
