I was missing my Poison songs that I remember jamming to when I was in high school. This album brought back floods of memories! Some of their newer stuff isn't too bad either. Great collection of some of their biggest hits. Good purchase...

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Poison.......2007-04-04

This is a good copulation of their work. A recommended purchase for Poison fans.

4 out of 5 stars I always liked this band, no matter how many other people hate it :).......2007-01-22

Poison is one of those 1980s bands that became "unfashionable" after the 1990s grunge craze, and is now looked upon with almost universal scorn. Reviled for their big hair, spandex clothing, and simple song structures, almost nobody even admits to liking them, but I still do! For one thing, who cares if 80s music is no longer hip and trendy? Time waits for nobody, and all music eventually becomes old. The grunge music that replaced hair metal is every bit as dated as hair metal itself is, and I don't see people bashing Nirvana or Soundgarden for being "90s has beens" do you? Nothing stays hip and trendy forever. And the other argument used against Poison is that their music isn't complicated or technically complex, it only has 3 chords, and doesn't require any talent to play. Has it ever occured to you hair metal bashers that there is more to music than lightning fast guitar solos that are so impossible that nobody can play them? Sometimes 3 chords is enough to make an impression on the listener, even if it isn't hard to play. In fact, virtually all rock stars s*ck at playing their instruments. You only need to look at all the Avril Lavigne, Green Day, U2, Nickelback and Nirvana songs that have ever hit #1 on the rock charts to realize that. Nobody thinks anything less of these people for playing 3 chords on their guitars, so why should it be any different for poison? I think this band has always been underrated.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-03

My fav CD right now. I listen to it on my long commute to and from work. It's the only thing that keeps me sane in the rush hour traffic. This CD is a must for every CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Charles Aznavour - 20 Great Songs in English.......2006-08-04

I ordered it and hope I like it. I've only heard him sing "The Old Fashioned Way," which I love, and hope it's on this album. It would be nice if Amazon would list the songs on the CDs they sell. I was close to not buying it because I want "The Old Fashioned Way" and don't know if it's on this CD as I haven't received it yet. However, I know he has a marvelous voice, and feel certain that the songs will be winners. Can't rate it until I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Aznavourian...chanson d'amour........2006-05-03

Like Cher,who is an Armenian origin too,Aznavour has really,really a one-of-a-kind voice.
I like numerous great artists and Aznavour is a singer that can melt your heart away with his songs.
As music is a communication,he sings romantic, passionate and melancholy songs of easy listening for all ages.
The stage is his life and his pronounciation in english is easy to understand.

Charles is much, much loved in Europe by all sweet melodies fan.Often he's invited to various festival as SPECIAL guest
and his performance is always an 'extraordinary' amber that burst into a masterpiece of art.

This CD in English consisted fabulous songs.

5 out of 5 stars An International Treasure.......2004-04-04

Charles Aznavour is a star of immense proportion, unique in his ability to emote in song what other artists cannot. He is a talent unmatched in his ability to stir up emotion in the listener with his melodic and sometimes sad vocals. Too bad that he is not as well-known in America. To listen to Charles Aznavour is an experience of one of the greatest chanteurs in music.

5 out of 5 stars The best of his English language music.......2004-01-17

Charles Aznavour was slow to achieve success even in his native France. Born in 1924, he was already in his thirties when he gained recognition. There have been many compilations of his French recordings and they are well worth a listen, but this set focuses on his English language recordings. One track (I didn't see the time go by) is from 1983 while the rest were recorded between 1971 and 1978. Charles never recorded covers - the song here titled Ave Maria is his own song, not the standard. He wrote all his own material in French though he sought help in translating his songs into English. As he once said, songs are hard to translate if you still want them to rhyme in a different language.

Understandably, Charles never made the same impact in Britain and America that he did in France, but he was very popular for a few years in both countries, with hugely successful live concerts in both countries in the sixties. He had just two UK hits - The old fashioned way (1973) and She (1974), the latter going all the way to number one. This was a rare achievement for a French record though Charles was not the first Frenchman to top the UK charts. Serge Gainsbourg did it in 1969 with Je T'aime moi non plus, a duet with English born but French based Jane Birkin that was only made available in the UK because it had been banned in France.

Although his UK hits are classic love songs, Charles sang about many other topics too. It will be my day is about an unsuccessful, obviously inspired by his own struggle for success. They fell is about Armenia, a country that Charles was deeply interested in. But it is the love songs that Charles is best remembered for. Apart from She and The old fashioned way, Yesterday when I was young is probably the best-known song on this collection, but The happy days, How sad Venice can be, No I could never forget, You've got to learn, I didn't see the time go by and Ave Maria are among the many other great songs here.

Charles showed the world that France is well capable of producing world-class singer-songwriters - this collection provides but a small sample of his artistry.

5 out of 5 stars the great aznavour!.......2002-09-16

This is one of his all time best! One of the greatest voices in the world!

5 out of 5 stars On time and in great shape........2007-04-16

My order was on time and in great shape.

4 out of 5 stars A very decent intro for the price.......2005-03-15

First: The correct samples for "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" (which has a jacket photo of a man & woman drinking in a dim pub) are found under the listing for "The Best of Irish Pub Songs: 20 Great Favorites", which has a jacket illustration of a drawing of a pink pub front called "Dan's Pub"; seems there's some information confusion between the two listings. Where the samples are for the "pink pub" recording are I have no idea.)

I first bought "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" in cassette years ago to simply learn some pub songs before an Irish vacation. I wasn't looking for classic renditions or sublime technical achievement, just something to teach me the tunes.

For the price, I was very pleasantly surprised. The songs are great, and this assortment is hard to find in one recording. Whether the "pub atmosphere" in the background is contrived or authentic was irrelevant to me; I did feel that it enhanced the listening experience, however, so I think it's a nice touch. If inauthenticity in that kind of thing gets your cockles up, then look to the Clancy Brothers or any other Irish folk legends for "live" concert recordings, or Matt Molloy for an honest-to-gosh pub recording, but you won't find these tunes in one product for any price anywhere else. The only downsides I found with this economic recording were no lyric sheet, and tempos that might vary from "studio" versions of the same songs, but all in all, it's a very enjoyable little tape for a small investment.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Irish CD EVER.......2004-12-14

This is the worst drinking song CD I have ever bought. For the record this is not the Jolly Beggermen in any way. Don't by this if you have a choice. The preformer kills the songs. I agree with the person who says that an Irish Drinking song recording should be done in an Irish Bar or Pub, recorded live.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Same CD as Advertised.......2004-12-08

I bought this cd thinking it was recorded live(as some other reviewers stated) but it wasn't it. I was extremly dissapointed and returned it to Amazon. I would like to know the cd that everyoneis talking about...soiunds like it would be fun to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2004-07-07

I enjoyed most of this CD ("Lanigan's Ball" and "Goodbye Muirsheen Durkin," in particular), but some of it I found a bit lacking. The singer on Rocky Road To Dublin (and would you PLEASE credit the singers???) bit off the first word of almost every line, and I wasn't crazy about their arrangement of "Finnegan's Wake" (which, for my money, belongs for all time to the Clancy Brothers). With those couple of quibbles, an otherwise enjoyable CD.

Album Description

The sounds for this series were recorded in 3D by Chuck Plaisance. His recording system is designed to simulate human hearing, using a binaural head microphone to capture depth, height, width, as well as directional movement. No special equipment is needed to get 3D sound from traditional stereo speakers. In fact, these albums will make your system - speakers or headphones - sound like it never has before. You are the experience.

All pieces contain compositions of pure Nature Sounds produced, arranged, edited and mastered by Chuck Plaisance and Suzanne Doucet. (aka Virtual Audio Environment).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect To Fall Asleep To.......2006-07-20

I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars 3-Dimensional Pure Nature Sounds.......2005-11-21

This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

5 out of 5 stars perfect selection for commencement/ graduation.......2007-06-11

We were concerned after reading some other reviews that this version of Pomp and Circumstance wouldn't be the correct movement or the full length version. This selection has the song for graduation AND the extended length, so it gives plenty of time for processionals. If this is what you need, this is the CD to get.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point for Classical Music Novices.......2004-08-13

"Simply the Best Classicial Anthems" is exactly what the title indicates. This is a collection of what the CD says are "36 of the most powerful classics on Earth". My review of this CD comes from someone who is a Classical Music Novice. I'm familiar with some of the composers, musical styles, musical periods, and some of the terminology that is key to understanding Classical Music. By no means am I an expert. I have basically popped in this two CD collection into my player and have enjoyed the sounds it produces. If you are in the same category as I am or maybe just wanting to be introduced to Classical Music - this is going to be a very good CD to have in your collection. For the more seasoned Classical Music fan, this could be either enjoyable or overkill.

The CD contains 36 songs composed by the legends of Classical Music Composers from the past. The bulk of the works come from Composers in the the 19th and 20th century, but there are works from the Romantic and Classical eras of the late 18th and early 19th century (such as Beethoven and Mozart). In general you will find most of the major names of Composers you would expect to find - names such as Tchiakovsky, Handel, Verdi, Strauss, Elgar, and Bach are all there. The only major composer who I would have expected to see on this CD that I don't see is Frederic Chopin. The composers of the late 20th century are not included on this collection - so you won't see Leonard Bernstein or John Williams on this set. While these Composers are excellent, I do think style of the tracks on this collection pre-date their style.

The recordings themselves are done by the great Orchestras around the world. For the most part, European Orchestras were used to deliver the tracks. There are a few exceptions: The Chicago Symphony Orchestra delivers "The Ride of the Valkyries"; The Toronto Symphony Orchestra delivers "Dance of the Knights"; and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra delivers Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Some of the European Orchestras that are well known include: BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, Choeur Philhamonique de Strasbourg, and more. Also included are performances by well known names in the Classical space such as Marie-Claire Alain (Bach's "Toccate and Fogue in D Minor" and Saint-Saens' "Symphony for Organ No 3"), Piero Toso (Vivaldi's "Allegro From Spring - Four Seasons"), and Placido Domingo appears on Puccini's "Nessun Dorma".

The 2 Disc collection contains a total of over 2 hours and 6 minutes of music. The selections that are included in the set will sound very familiar to you when you play them. You probably have both heard and seen the names of tracks such as: Oref's "O Fortuna"; Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man"; Beethoven's "First Movement from Symphony Number 5" and "Ode To Joy"; Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance", and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Many of the other tracks will also sound familiar, but maybe not so much by name - such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries", Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathoustra"; Grieg's "Piano Concerto", and "Dies Irae" (versions included by Mozart and Verdi - you can compare the two and judge for yourself). As for the Discs themselves, I think most of the casual fans will like the selections on Disc Two better, but Disc One is still very good. On a sidebar, the Israel Philharmonic's version of "1812 Overture" is by far the best you will hear - particularly at the end, the booming drums create almost a 3 dimensional vision of fireworks being launched into the air.

There one big negative on this collection is some of the recording quality. The clarity of the recording is there, but some of the recording levels leave a lot to be desired. On some of the softer parts, it is barely audible without significantly turning up your volume. This is very evident on "O Fortuna" where you will hear almost dead silence during from the 30 second to 1:30 mark of the track unless you crank your volume up. Same with the first few seconds of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathoustra" and Tchiakovsky's "1812 Overture". When the volume is cranked up you will hear them - but then the other sections will be way too loud. I'm surprised with modern technology that this couldn't be addressed better.

The liner notes are pretty thin. You do get the Composers, Performers/Orchestras, and recording dates. There isn't any more details than that and you won't learn anymore insight on the tracks than this information. Despite some of the shortcomings of the liner notes and recording volume, I still think this is an excellent place to start and do recommend this CD if you are a novice to Classical Music and are looking for a great place to start listening to what the Classics have to offer.

Simply The Best Classical Anthems

Simply The Best Classical Anthems is a compilation album of `36 of the most powerful Anthems on Earth'. But, it is also said to be something else. It is said to be a gateway. A gateway to another world. A world where our imagination can run free without being shackled down by any borders or boundaries or rules or limits. A world that we have all seen or perhaps more accurately have all heard of but for many of us a world that we have never dared to enter. Never dared to enter because of fear. The fear of being ostracised and shunned by our community.

THE MYTH
`Classical Music!', I can hear some of you cry. `That isn't another world. That's just music for the upperclass, the high-brow, and the pompous.' Surprisingly, I too felt this way for a long time until I accepted the invitation made to me by Simply The Best Classical Anthems. I always felt that Classical Music was nice to listen to as background music for a Levis ad or a Car ad but I would consider people strange if they chose to hear it on its own. However, after having listened to this album I realised how wrong I was in my assumptions.

THE TRUTH
Music as with all forms of amusement helps to take you away from where you are now. It helps to relax you when you are stressed with anger; it helps to give you strength when you are vulnerable; it helps to keep your spirits up when you have faced tragedy or loss. It helps. And, for me the type of music that best conjures up the most passionate emotions (love, hate, courage and anger) at our most testing times is Classical Music.
How? I don't know.
Why? I don't know.
I can only promise you that in my experience it does.

THE CHEST
The album, in visual terms, is very difficult to overlook amongst the plethora of records that may surround it. This is because the album has a very distinct purple sleeve cover. Not any kind of purple mind you but the Cadbury's kind of purple. The kind of purple that carries with it an invitation. An invitation that if accepted promises you a treasure inside.
And since, I have always enjoyed the treasure within the purple Cadbury's Dairy Milk wrapper, I asked myself why would an album carrying the same invitation promise to be anything different? Thus, I parted with my tuppence worth and went back home to open this purple chest of promised treasures.

THE PROMISED TREASURE
As you may have guessed, the contents of the album are somewhat different to the contents of a Cadbury's bar. When I opened the album, I was presented with two compact discs. At first glance, there did not seem to be anything special about them. They were just your average, everyday, run of the mill compact discs. To tell you the truth, I was a bit disappointed because I suppose I had hoped for something more.
However, looks can be deceptive. (Afterall, a Cadbury's Dairy Milk does not seem very appetising until you taste it!) And, also come November each year, I am always bemused and surprised at how the shabby contents of a cardboard box can both light up the sky and light up the faces of the neighbourhood. Thus, I pushed aside my assumptions and I ignited the discs (not literally of course, I just pressed the play button on the CD player). And, I let the fireworks begin.

THE KEY
From the very beginning, you will feel like you have unlocked the doorway to something special. And, after a full two hours of listening to both discs, you will feel like you have been taken out of this world and transported to another. Welcome to the world of Classical Music.

GUIDANCE
In the beginning, continue to listen to both discs in one go (i.e. one after the other). After a while, you will know which tracks you enjoy listening to the most. For those tracks you enjoyed the most make a promise to yourself that you will listen to the whole of the piece from which that track came from.
Good Luck on your quest if you choose to accept it.
Ride amongst the Valkyries, listen to the Flight of the Bumblebees, and use The Planets to keep you on the path.

I am not a good reviewer because as with all of my reviews I refuse to comment too much about what is inside the product but rather more about what effect the product has had on me. (Me, me, me. Vain & Egotistic, I know, so my friends and family keep telling me). But, I just want to cause a raucous about the product, enough not to spoil but enough of a raucous to let you experience it for yourself.

So my final words are:
Simply The Best Classical Anthems is an invitation. An invitation to the world of classical music. A world where you can begin a never-ending quest of curiosity. A curiosity that will always be rewarded with fulfilment.

Do you accept such an invitation?

Hope you found this review helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Samples.......2003-11-23

The samples are too short and the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Having said that the choices are wonderful and the price is great. If you're looking for a overview of the best of classical music then this is for you. However if it's quality you're looking for then spent the extra money and look at other choices.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampler!.......2002-03-20

This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus."

There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," "'Promenade' from Pictures at an Exhibition." The compilers did an interesting double take by including both Verdi's and Mozart's "Dies Ire." I'm not sure which is better.

This music is good for the brain and good for the soul. There is a power and passion that the blaring and glaring music that makes up most of the FM band. I'm reminded of the religious man who said that there is no music in hell. Probably because they wouldn't appreciate it there.

These CDs has a good transfer from the analogue tapes; there is no hiss or fuzziness. The packaging hearkens back to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the black monolith. And appropriately, "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is the opening track on Disk 2.

On this CD there is new material that is VERY GOOD...and of course there are the well known favorites as well. This was a great CD which led into a GREAT Concert!!!!
For those of us that weren't around or old enough to experience Poison in the beginning this CD takes us there and also shows us how much better they can get with time and experience!
This is a MUST HAVE for any Poison Fan!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Poison - A Real Review........2006-05-31

If you are looking to get into Poison I would start with this collection of songs and music videos that helped shape the music, style and sound of the last 20 years in rock history. The best period in Poison's career was the first three albums and this CD covers most of the music from those periods. This CD starts at the beginning of Poison's career with the Look What The Cat Dragged In album which is represented by the first five songs. Tracks 6-9 come from their second album Open up and say ahh... Tracks 10 & 12-14 come from their third album Flesh & Blood. Track 11 comes from the Less Than Zero soundtrack from 1987 and this is the first time it has appeared on a Poison album. Track 15 comes from the fourth studio album Native Tongue. Track 16 comes from the half studio - half live album Power to the People. Track 17 comes from the album Hollyweird. Track 18 as noted on the CD is a new studio track, it is a cover of the classic song by Grand Funk Railroad. Track 11 is a cover of the KISS classic Rock N' Roll All Nite.

5 out of 5 stars Reading about Paganini.......2007-01-25

Fans of Paganini should read Julian Livingston's novel, Paganini-The Vampire Career. In this book, P.T. Barnum has sent Henry Feder to Europe to seek out a new violinist, Nicolaties, more than 40 years after Paganini died without last rites. Nicolaties looks, performs, behaves like Paganini. Could it be him? Lots of technical references to music, as Mr. Livingston is a musician and has written 2 operas. A very interesting book for musicians, vampire lovers, and macabre 19th century European tales.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Delights.......2001-03-16

I bought this CD after hearing of the legend of Paganini - the devil on his shoulder, the playing that made people faint, the Marfan-syndrome affected joints that allowed impossible finger contortions, the immense crowds that adored him, as they did Liszt at the piano. What I expected was to hear impossible violin artistry at work, which was definitely fulfilled. What I did not expect, however, were the marvelous interludes between the violin solos. Paganini's concerti are unlike those of Beethoven and Brahms, as the violin completely dominates the attention. But the power of the full orchestra was unexpected. These are true violin showpieces, to be certain, but they are also marvelous bits of music - when the full orchestra blasts in you can't help but smile.

5 out of 5 stars An unearthly hand guides his bow.......2000-08-13

"The Devil guides his bow " was what audiences said when they heard the fast fingers of Nicolo Paganini as he performed his various Caprices and Concertos. This was not an insult. He could play with demonic speed and still maintain a great sound. He is first and foremost a violinist, a superb one. Paganini's music is also brilliant and elegant sounding. In his time, audiences were moved to tears by his slower violin movements. This proves the emotional factor is present in his music, making him a Romantic composer and nevertheless a Classical composer. Stradivari violins were being made at this time. It was a great period in music and Paganini was a legend. I highly recommend this cd containing his most gorgeous works.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory set of Paganini.......2000-01-14

This is a fine compilation. Not only it includes better compositions by Paganini, it also includes some of the best recorded performance of the works as well. As a musicological interest, Grumiaux and Szerying gave revival performances of no.3 and 4. The approaches the three violinists take are interesting to note as well. Szeryng and Grumiaux's playing emphasize the lyrical, aristocratic quality, whereas Gitlis emphasizes the demonic quality. And both approaches work splendidly. This set will provide an excellent introduction for people who does not know the compositions by Paganini, and will provide great pleasure for those who knows the music but has not heard them performed by these three wonderful violinists. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fine compilation of Paganini.......1999-12-01

This is a fine collection of Paganini. Szeryng and Grumiaux gave the modern premieres for third and fourth concertos, respectively. Grumiaux's aristocratic performance of the fourth concerto has rarely been matched. In his performance, musicianship, technique and taste are balanced in an incomparable perfection. Szeryng's noble, distinguished performance of the third concerto has also very few equals. His restrained lyricism is particularly effective in the aria-like 2nd movement. As a pleasant surprise, Szeryng's performance has a great deal of charm as well (which is not always the case). Then as a contrast, this set has a hair-raisingly demonic performance of the second concerto by under-rated Ivry Gitlis. Gitlis's approach is 180 degree opposite from lyrical Grumiaux and Szeryng. Gitlis plays the concerto as if he is an personification of the devil himself, with gut-shattering vibrato and fearless abandan. Gitlis' fine performances of 3 caprices matches in every way with Heifetz's. The other recordings in this set are also distinguished, but not quite in the same level as the above mentioned. Grumiaux's lyrical performance of the first concerto sounds somewhat pale compared to young Yehudi Menuhin's 1934 performance, and so as his recording of two variations (Ricci plays a better Le Streghe, and I don't understand why Philips did not use Gitlis' version of I palpiti, which is much better). Marrinar's competent but hardly exciting perpetuo mobile (compare with Toscanini's recording!) could have been substituted with several more of Gitlis' Paganini short pieces he recorded during the 1960's on Philips. But this compilation is definitely worth getting for the concertos nos.2, 3 & 4. And the price is good too!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad Just Average.......2001-10-16

This is not a bad CD but I thought the selections could have been better. I think you are better off buying the source CDs. Erich Kunzel's output is substantial. Most of Kunzel's CDs follow a particular theme or follow a genre when it comes to film scores. I think you are better off to go with the type of music that you generally like instead of this potpourri. You usually can't go wrong with any of Erich Kunzel's recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Great covers and sound effects.......1999-05-07

A great test for a stereos, including subwoofers. Chiller, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Grand Canyon Suite, and Jurassic Lunch will put any sub to the test. Telarc's digitial recordings are top-notch!

4 out of 5 stars A good sampling of cuts by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......1999-02-15

The recordings on this CD span several years in Kunzel's work with the Cincinnati Pops. The recording quality is first rate. The CD opens with a cut called "The Sounds of the West" complete with western sound effects. The mooing cows and whinnying horses were so real that our dog made a bee-line to the speakers on my system. The selection is varied enough to provide something of interest to about any listener.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, flawless acapella sounds.......2007-05-13

The bets of the bobs realy makes for an awesome collection of acapella music, both from studio recordings and live shows.
While I don't agree with all the choices the editor made (where is psycho killer? that preformance from the first album was amazing!), most of the songs in this album make for a fun, light hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Bobs.......2007-02-19

The Bobs have been around for a while. This disk is great. The Bobs at their best.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth owning. Also get their first 4 albums........2006-01-16

There's no question, their first 4 albums have the most hits. I admit, I don't have this CD. However, I do own 10 of their 13 albums. I particularly mention that as I read a review on rarb.org that said this album had some live versions, at least one in particular, 'Cowboy Lips' that is superior to the studio version. I've seen the BOBS about 5 times over the last 20 years and find that their live versions are fairly close to the studio versions. They definitely do a great show and are always worth seeing live particularly as they do not tour that often.

Three features of the BOBS worth keeping in mind:
A) Almost all their songs tell a story.
B) Almost all their songs are humerous. Can humerous songs be listened to over and over? Their songs can. Can you listen to the same comedy album over and over? Let's put it this way, if you wanna buy pristine old used albums go to the comedy section, even JONATHAN WINTERS lps from the 60's will be typically virtually unplayed. Why? Because even classic lps like 60's BILL COSBY records go so far, then you master the jokes. Ok, ok, I'll admit it, when I was a young teenager I listened to several BILL COSBY albums so often I was spouting numerous comedy sentences from them for years. The difference here is that the BOBS' songs are not just about humor. No, the other piece is:
C) They have a remarkable ability to arrange songs in the a cappella form using their vocal instruments, and occasional other body parts and rarely, a spare instrument here or there, mostly on the Plugged album. If you love harmony they interweave their voices so well it's musical art. As a result, I find that I listen to the BOBS consistently over the years which is saying a lot because I get burned out hearing the same songs over and over. Sometimes I need 5 years inbetween hearing songs like of the BEATLES or the DOORS. The BOBS I listen to 'em sometime just about every year.

I understand from the other review that there's some unreleased songs on this album, Best of the Bobs: 20 Songs from 20 Years (2003), quite likely 'The Boxer', 'Giant Robot Store', 'Weekend in Cincinnati' and 'Bee Bop I Love You'. So, I can't say if they are hits or not. Those songs do not appear on any of their other albums so they must be the unreleased ones (The BOBS have appeared on several compilations so those songs may be from that source. They also released a fans only cassette in the 80's with some songs they did on PBS and they have a very small number of 7" vinyl records).

Aside from those caveats, if I were going to pick their 20 best songs from 20 years here would be my choices:
From this album:
1) 'Share a Load' a marvelous story of a guy and a gal who end up sharing their laundry load at the laundromat. (Songs For Tomorrow Morning 1988)
2) 'Please Let Me Be Your Third World Country', an excellent commentary on left wing causes and a man's desire to enhance his love life with his politically charged girlfriend. (My I'm Large 1987)
3) 'Helmet' One of their 8 best ever songs. Lyrically so believable, almost childlike in the narrator's enthusiasm for helmets plus their ever clever vocal arranging. (My I'm Large)
4) 'Art for Art's Sake' I almost get lost in this song from the vocal gymnastics they do on this. (s/t 1983)
5) 'Cowboy Lips' There's just no song in the world of entertainment that covers this subject. More lyrical fun and vocal artistry.
and 6) 'Helter Skelter' The bravery exhibited in taking on this song is enough to give them credit. (Sing the Songs of...1991)
I would add:
From their first album, The Bobs:
7) 'The Deprogrammer' a serious song, possibly their only serious song, with only a somewhat humerous refrain, given the intense subject matter.
and 8) 'Psycho Killer' which does TALKING HEADS proud. As with the best covers, it gives you a reinvention of the original.
9) 'Through the Wall' One of their top 8 songs. This could easily also be called one of their true masterpieces. An emotional love song about a subject you never hear about in songs with a humor thread throughout. Touching, about yearning and some of their finest vocal arrangements ever.
From My I'm Large:
10) 'My I'm Large' one of their 8 most mighty songs. Mental imagery wise and vocally they soar. Humor, as usual. A very different subject than typically found in the world of entertainment, which they manage to do on several of their best self written songs. This song is as exciting to me today as it was 17 or so years ago, as with all their best songs.
11) 'My Husband Was a Weatherman' Maybe it's just the kicker line at the end, but it also grasps an essence of marriage somehow.
12) 'Valentino's' Wot a story. Again, a surprise in how it ends up, female lead vocal. How can they do love songs with subjects that one does not hear from other sources given that the majority of pop songs are love songs? Incredible. This is so funny and, as per usual with their best songs, mighty vocal soaring.
13) 'Little Red Riding Hood' Probably their best cover and even better because the album version is live and the audience is howling at the end of the song. They improve on the original. Way. I can't get enough of this song. One of their top 8 songs.

14) 'My Shoes' One of their best ever 8 songs it's emotional. Fantasy lyrics, shoes with a mind of their own, one of their finest songs musically. I just get totally swept up in this song, still.
From Songs for Tomorrow Morning:
15) 'Santa Ana Woman' Not just one of the 8 best, likely their masterpiece. Noir story with a humor twist at the very end. One of the best songs ever, period. Emotion, humor, story, vocal intensity. Whew.
16) 'But Then, A Week Ago Last Thursday' A humorous tale, a bit fanciful, as usual, with great vocal sense of interplay. The lyrics never get tired for me, year after year and typically, I'm not much of one for lyrics unless it's praise songs at church. These guys just combine humor/story/and a cappela in a way that can be magical.
17) 'Corn Dogs' Holy smokes! I can't get enough of this song. I should make it one of the top 8 of theirs, making it 9. All about growing old together and battling the bulge so humerously and with such a great harmony refrain.
18) 'Boy Around the Corner' What a delightful tale of yearning. As ever, not a common topic despite being a love song and their great ability to harmonize, this time with the female lead vocal.
A bonus track on this album's CD version (the song comes from one of their 7" records if I recall correctly) is
19) '(First I Was a Hippie, Then I Was a Stockbroker) Now I Am a Hippie Again' Well, you can imagine, they take the story all the way through this subject in a delightful way as only the BOBS do and make it musically entertaining the entire way as well.
From Sing the Songs of (1991):
20) 'You Really Got Me' They almost always do a very refreshing take on their many covers, two albums worth. I'd also pick 'Purple Haze' and 'Whole Lotta Love' from this album but I said I'd stick with 20 total. Heck, 'You Can't Do That' and 'Fever' are on here too along with the aforementioned 'Helter Skelter' and 'Psycho Killer'. Obviously, an album worth getting all by itself. Really, just go out and buy their first four albums. Even their less than strongest songs on those four are still great. That does not end up being true with the albums that come after them beginning with:
Shut Up and Sing (1993) still has the last of their 8 amazing songs:

21) 'Mr. Duality'. (ok, ok, I cannot select simply 20 greatest hit songs from the BOBS. I confess. There's a number I could still include, and even mentioned above but did not number. Again, mainly from the first 4 albums). At their best in fantasy story telling. Very clever lyrics about a guy with two sides to him, in so many ways. Presented, as ever in their finest songs, with incredible vocal arrangements.
Bobs Cover the Songs of...(1994) has two songs that won't fit in my 20 but I'll mention them anyway:
'White Room' and 'Wind Cries Mary' probably because I love CREAM and JIMI HENDRIX and love hearing great covers of their work and these songs are terrific. One could not imagine hearing these songs done a cappella (along with Whole Lotta Love which they did with Gunnar Bob live doing an unbelievable vocal drum solo) and done so well. It's all in how they re-arrange the songs.
Plugged (1995) has:
22) 'Kill Your Television' which could have been a radio hit except they have one of their rare off color words but only because it's from a bumper sticker. Who could have thought of a song consisting of nothing but sayings from bumper stickers. Great.
I can't find my Too Many Santas (1996) CD otherwise I'd probably have 1 or 2 hits from it.
I Brow Club (1997) has:
The incredible story of 23) 'Change of Heart' which I must call one of their 8 top classic songs because it has the best they bring: story/humor/passion/uncommon topic/vocal harmony as sweet as one could imagine.
Best of the Bobs (2000), an import from Germany has 17 songs from the first four albums.
Coaster (2001) has:
24) 'She Made Me Name You Earl' which lyrically alone is one of their most clever songs and emminently listenable. The number of names they list for, ahem, well, it's just another tremendous song for all their best reasons.
They have another album called Rhapsody In Bob which is apparently their most recent.

Ok, there ya go, 24 best songs in 20 years. And what's even worse is, I'm missing access to a few of their other songs because they have some bonus trax on 1 or 2 of their early albums that I don't have and they have those few 7"s and that elusive fan club only tape. You got that stuff? I implore you, kindly contact me and we'll arrange some sorta trade of some kind? Thanks, chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Bobs Fans.......2005-03-26

This is an awesome collection of great Bobs arrangements. If you are a lover of a capella singing, clever vocal arrangements and funny lyrics - you will love this CD. Simply outstanding.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Forget what they SAY.......2003-11-10

Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

2 out of 5 stars Most Aggravating Album in the World!.......2002-05-26

This CD is the first thing I ever returned to Amazon. It is an inferior product--selections cut off abruptly before the end, volume fades and returns in the middle of a cut...production values are pure schlock here. Maybe I should have expected as much from such a sophomoric title.

3 out of 5 stars A fair introduction to Classical Music.......2001-03-03

I purchased this CD because I am new to Classical Music and thought this would be a good introduction CD. There is some wonderful music on this CD. The only problem I have with this CD is every other track is Opera of one form or another. As a new listener I found that after the Opera tracks I felt I had been yelled at and it was a distraction to the other music contained on the CD. I now know to hit the skip button on my CD player just about every other track. I only gave it 3 stars because I felt put off by the vocal tracks. I believe that when someone is new to Classical Music they do not think of Opera. If you don't mind hitting the skip button a lot or if you like Opera this CD is for you!

3 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2000-07-14

This is a nice recording for folks who don't know much about classical music, and would serve as a wonderful introduction. It covers centuries of great music in a very listener-friendly format. I am sure that I will use this CD in my music classroom. For a seasoned classical music lover, however, the CD proves a bit frustrating, including only segments of masterworks (not even the entire movement of the Holst). I bought the CD for a few recordings, which I truly enjoy and make the CD a worthwile purchase. But I found (and I think that most classical musicians will find) that I already had many of these works in their entirety.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent compilation.......2000-04-12

This is a fine collection of classical songs for those that have little experience with classical music. Howver, I truly love it.
