Buy it if you love the orchestral beat sound of the mid-60s.......2002-06-03
You don't have to like Cilla Black especially to welcome the reissue of "Cilla/Sings A Rainbow" on CD. If you love the big orchestral beat sound of mid-60s Britgirl pop, this twofer is for you. Even George Martin was influenced by that magical Spectre inspired sound that was unique to its time and which modern studio technology would not be able to recreate. Better still if you're a Cilla fan, for these were the two best albums she ever recorded. Love her or loathe her, Cilla in 1964/65 was fresh, taking risks and going for broke with that uncompromising foghorn voice of hers. With both rousing soul covers and over-the-top ballads, she was belting them out and the result was to make you sit up and listen, even if it wasn't always pleasing to the ears. That was before she lost it or resorted to (as one music critic so eloquently put it) "burbling like a wallflower" on much of her later efforts.
Cilla covered alot of ground on these early albums. From soul covers of familiar hits by Martha & the Vandellas ("Dancing In The Street"), Brenda Holloway ("Everything Little Bit Hurts"), Doris Troy ("Whatcha Gonna Do 'Bout It") & Betty Everett ("There's No Place To Hide") to contemporary pop ballads by the Beatles ("Yesterday"), Dionne Warwick ("This Empty Place"), the Walker Brothers ("Make It Easy On Yourself"), even to jazz standards ("Ole Man River", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To"). In 1964/65, Cilla displayed a versatility and maturity that was uncommon among pop singers of the day. Listen to how easily she switches from the rangey "This Empty Place" to her now classic R&B take of "One Two Three" to the whispery "Sing A Rainbow", a precursor to the type of singing she would do much more frequently when she started hosting her own television series. Until then, Cilla did them all, some to quite stunning effect. My own personal favourites from this era have always been the boomy orchestral ballads, like the fabulous "Everything I Touch Turns to Tears" which I swear must have been written for Gene Pitney, "Come To Me" and "I'm Not Alone Anymore" as well as the big band jazz standards which Cilla swung to with amazing credibility. There's little in these two albums to pick a quarrel with. The material is largely excellent and the singing some of the very best Cilla has done in her entire career. But why were mono takes used for CD transfer when stereo versions obviously exist ? I have to assume EMI made the right decision despite the tinny quality of the mono masters.
Anyway, it's a thumbs up for the "Cilla/Sings A Rainbow" twofer. Buy it !
A Landmark Release !.......2002-04-15
The release of this CD finally marks the re-issue on CD of Cilla Black's original Parlophone/EMI Music releases. This has to be a must for any lover of sixties music. These are two of Cilla's finest albums, included is her debut 'Cilla' which when released in 1965 reaching #5 in the U.K and the follow-up 'Cilla Sings a Rainbow' which peaked at #4.
Stunning would understate what are two beautiful albums feating the diva at her most soulful and dramatic. Cilla is the biggest selling British female artist from the sixties and this is her legacy uncovered in digitally remastered glory.

Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary British Talent!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-12
Cilla Black had the ability to sing a song "nice" and then cut loose into a powerful dynamo! Cilla was the second biggest selling musical star to come out of Liverpool behind the Beatles.
This cd includes two former LPs on it. The first LP, simply titled "Cilla", was Cilla Black's first LP. Cilla builds the opening number "Goin' Out Of My Head" that sends me out of my head! Cilla is torchy on "Every Little Bit Hurts". "Ol Man River" is Cilla's jazzy tribute to a grand old standard. Cilla's voice worked well with Bacharach ballads and proves it with "This Empty Place". A sophisticated tribute to a great standard, Cilla is a knockout out on "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To".
The second of the 2 LPs, "Cilla Sings A Rainbow" has great additions to this cd. Once again Cilla is magic on the Bacharach ballad "Make It Easy On Yourself". Her voice was perfect for this type of song. "There's No Place To Hide" has one of those grand Cilla vocals! Cilla sings "When I Fall In Love" so beautifully that you swear that it was pulled out of a movie soundtrack from the 40's! "Yesterday" features Cilla's poignant vocal that is magic! Cilla's vocal has a force to be reckoned with in "Baby I'm Yours".
This collection is made for those of us who remember the best of the 60's singers from the U.K. It's an opportunity to explore some of the songs that most of us never had the pleasure to purchase because some of these songs were simply not available to the masses in the U.S. at that time.
At Long Last!.......2002-06-10
It has been such a long time, but now EMI has started to release Cilla Black's back catalogue, reminding us what a truly great singer she was...and introducing a whole new generation to the fact that she is not just a top TV presenter.
These are the songs we revelled in during the 60s, and these albums reveal the young Cilla as a remarkably mature all rounder with classics like Ol' Man River, and You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To. Mixed with covers of many classics of the day such as Dancing in the Street, Lovers' Concerto and Yesterday, we see the many facets of her singing style - from up-tempo swing numbers to gentle ballads. Her strong voice is particularly impressive on "Goin Out of My Head".
If you haven't experienced "Cilla the singer" then get this album and discover a true star. If you know Cilla's work, then buy this album and relive those great days when Cilla featured regularly in the charts. You won't be disappointed.
I for one sincerely hope that EMI will continue to release Cilla's many albums on CD for us to enjoy anew.
A really great album!
