Phineas, Paul, Roy. Enough said. Incredibly bluesy and amazing compositions all around. Check out "After Hours" (track 4).

    5 out of 5 stars Swinging Blues.......2003-03-31

A classic, must own album for fans of a classic jazz era.

5 out of 5 stars This album amazes me........2002-01-15

Unlike the Oscar Peterson Trio, which played with all of the polish of a well rehearsed chamber orchestra, this group is sounds loose and off-the-cuff. In that respect this date feels more like a last minute thrown-together aggregation in an Uptown joint, who come together and blow on a blues, some standards, and read a couple of the pianist's original charts. But what could have been an ordinary trio date turns into a masterpiece thanks to the talents of three jazz greats.

Phineas' tone on the piano is rich and round. His ideas are always crystal clear, and his playing is just dripping with soul. The unaccompanied intro and outro to "Solitaire" blow my mind -- his work on this track alone is worth the price of the album. The slow blues which follows is also an absolute gem. Phineas gets inside every crack of the blues changes on this one and turns out a tear jerking ode to the spirit of blues and swing. Roy Haynes, the leader on the date, is the quintessential modern drummer. With one foot in the past and one foot in the future, he seems to bestride the entire history of jazz like a Colossus. His playing is never cliche, never canned, and always swinging. PC, as always, plays ever-swingingly with a big booming sound and empathic support.

I can't recommend this side enough to any music lover. Any detractor of Phineas for his so called "lack of musicianship" will be compelled to reconsider his position after dealing with this... Don't miss it!

Christmas is the season for whipping out those holiday-specific standard recordings. This splendid gift by Chanticleer should top the list, for one will never tire of this a cappella choir's interpretations. With selections spanning the last five centuries of Latin, German, English, Spanish, and French festive fare, this recording exemplifies the sacrifice of the ego to the higher form of choral sound. Jacob Handl's "Mirabile Mysterium" takes you on a trip into the chromatic wonderlands, where you temporarily lose tonal balance. Victoria's eerie and dissonant "O Magnum Mysterium" treats us to rich voices swelling out of one organic whole. The phenomenal blend and perfect intonation elevate this recording above others in its category. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Christmas.......2007-01-16

If you are looking for traditional madrigal sounding holiday music, this CD is for you. I have purchased this CD several times because I just keep giving them away. Everyone I've ever introduced it to has loved it. This finely polished group has a pure sound matched by no other. If you weren't looking at the CD notes you would never know this is only a group of 12 men.

    5 out of 5 stars Christmas magic.......2007-01-10

A CD evocative of Christmas past and present. Beautiful harmonies both wistful and ringing with joy. Buy it for next Christmas!

Chanticleer, the U.S. equivalent of the British King's Singers, is a full-time classical vocal ensemble named for the rooster in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. It was founded in 1978 by Louis Botto, a tenor, and for a while was its artistic director. They have achieved critical acclaim all over the world and their repertoire is very extensive and varied. Just commenting on a few of the selections on this disc:
'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' is a hymn that originated in western Germany around 1500, and is best known in the harmonization by Michael Praetorious published around 1609. The poem used biblical imagery that pictures the newborn Christ growing forth from the "stem of Jesse'(the father of King David), as foretold in Isiah 11. The metaphorical writings of the Middle Ages depict the patriarchal figure of Jesse as a rose bush.
'O Magnum mysterium',Victoria's most famous motet, uses a subline text from the Christmas Vespers. This is incredibly beautiful with its interweaving polyphony which leads to a hushed choral declamation at the words "O beata Virgo"(O Blessed Virgin) ending with a Alleulia Section.
'Here is the Little Door' is from a set of three "carol anthems", dating from 1918-1920. Herbert Howells was revered as one of the 20th century's most distinguished Choral composers, and I recently discovered him thru the album " by the Corydon Singers conducted by Matthew Best. It includes Howells Requiem in addition to the Vaughan Williams Mass in G Minor. It is the most heavenly somewhat exotic choral music I think I have heard in many years of listening; I highly recommend it.
'Glory to the newborn King'. Joseph Jennings, Georgia native and present musical director of Chanticleer, has often drawn upon his roots to create special gospel and spiritual arrangements of familiar songs. 'Glory to the newborn King' features four traditional songs combined to showcase Chanticleer's unique choral virtuosity!
This is an excellent group of carols, and it is always refreshing to hear 'new' melodies, arrangements; a joy for the ear!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2006-02-20

The title and artist' name says it all - Christmas with clear (pure) singing. Glorious in all respects.

    5 out of 5 stars It's that time of year...for Chanticleer!.......2005-12-20

Walking the busy malls to the multichannel Muzak of every old Christmas song interpreted in hiphop, jazz, idiosyncratic 'rethinkings' by famous soloists as well as replays of Gene Autry, Bing Crosby etc., it is a relief to return home (or if fortunate, to the concert hall) and hear the more uplifting music of the season through the ages. And despite reliance on some old favorite Messiah recordings, and carols by Kings College Choir, the one CD that seems to reign supreme is this Chanticleer release SING WE CHRISTMAS from 1995!

These twelve male voices create an ambience that can only be labeled 'spiritual', so resonant and exquisitely performed are each of the generous works on this recording. The moods pass through Praetorius, Victoria, Bach and traditional carols of unknown authorship to works by Ives, Billings, Holst, Guerrero, Howells and Sametz. The repertoire is both familiar and rarely heard and the result of combining all these forms is the truest form of Christmas spirit on record: this is music to cleanse the Muzak blitz! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

The liner notes to baby records could be lifted from one jewel case to the next with nary an eye ever batted, because they all trot out some form of the same trite message: "It doesn't matter what you sing to your baby, so long as you sing." Don't count Sara Hickman out--on Newborn (and on the logical successor, Toddler), she lets us know from the get-go that "my wish was to create an album for parents who have trepidation about singing to their newborns." Still, and despite the inclusion of standards like "Hush" and "You Are My Sunshine" on this not overly touchy-feely 15-tracker, she's concocted something special, outdoing her well-intentioned peers by performing originals so repetitive (the soothing "It's Alright") or ridiculous ("Goop's In It," about a booger-infested baby peeper) that singing along, infant at your side, seems right. Hickman wins us over with informality; in effect, she hands over her baby monitor, letting us listen in on stuff that's spilled spontaneously (and, because she's Sara Hickman, melodically) from her lips while gazing dopily at her own newborn. Occasionally, she can go overboard with the candor--listening to the ballad "Lily," written for her daughter, feels like opening somebody else's love letter--but forgiving her is easy, first because by being so open she becomes an instant surrogate friend to isolated new parents; and second, because her voice, evocative of Karen Carpenter on "Lily" and of Linda Ronstadt on "It's Alright," will tame the testiest baby. It's vocal crushed velvet. Give this album to stupefied new moms--by not being overly concerned with making sense, it may be the most sensible baby album you can buy. --Tammy La Gorce

Going to a baby shower soon? Friends or family members about to have a kid? This is more than a CD of some music -- is family intimacy in a box!

Seriously, this CD was created to encourage parents to sing to their children. Simple songs that are soothing to babies. One of the songs was made up by Sara while walking the floor with her colicky firstborn. This is the kind of stuff that settles the stomach of both parents and babies. Beautiful stuff.

5 out of 5 stars This album is a MUST-HAVE for parents everywhere.......2004-08-24

I received this album as a shower gift and I can't tell you how much it has meant to my whole family, even the grandparents. Sara has a way of verbalizing how amazing children and your love for them is. I plan on buying every product she ever produces because she is uplifting and makes both my daughter and I feel great.

    5 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite.......2003-12-15

A friend gave us a copy of Sara Hickman's Newborn and Toddler cd's when our daughter was born and they are forever on our stereo... in the livingroom, the nursery, and the car. Newborn is such a sweet cd that has calming songs as well as a few funny and playful songs (good for dads to sing along with!). The Toddler cd is great fun for when our little one is wide awake and in need of entertainment. You don't feel so ridiculous being silly when you are singing along with Sara! Both cd's are essential for new parents. We treasure them!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't (would not want to) live without this one!.......2002-04-25

If my now 6 months old daughter (who has been Sara's fan for 3 months) was writing a review, it would go something like this. "I love to listen to Sara's CD. She has a beautiful voice that instantly makes me forget to be fussy. I could listen to her singing for hours, and indeed I do - and never tire! The song "goop in your eyes" makes me smile, esp when mama tries to sing along (she is NOT a very good singer). My only complaint is that the pauses between the songs are too long. Sometimes I have just enough time to remember what was making me fussy, but then I forget again when the next song starts!" --- aah, isn't she cute?

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of musical selections for kids........2001-05-04

Sara Hickman's Newborn is an outstanding collection of highly recommended musical selections for young listeners which are superbly performed and flawlessly recorded. The fifteen pieces comprising Newborn include Hush (1:33); It's Alright (2:55); A-Tisket A-Tasket (2:07); Lily (3:16); Goop's In It (1:45); This Heart (4:50); Reserved for the One I Love (3:01); Big Bird, Little Bird (:59); Moonshadow (2:53); You Are My Sunshine (2;43); A Slice of Heaven (2:23); All Things Bright and Beautiful (:51); It's Alright (4:13); We Are Each Other's Angels (5:20); and Brahms' Lullaby (1:02). Also highly recommended for family, school, day-care center, and community library children's music collections is Sara Hickman's Toddler (CD, ... 42 minutes)

4 out of 5 stars Nice to listen.......2007-05-10

Not quite sure what would be the relation of classic music with baby's IQ. I have seen some prenatal DVD talking about studies showing that toddlers with musical practice get better test scores than the group without stimulation from music; same as color and geometry shapes.

    1 out of 5 stars why?.......2005-10-28

Why do they keep making these "Mozart (and other composers) for..." CDs? I know I know. For idiots to buy them of course so the record company can make tons of money. But I feel it's an insult to classical music. No offense but Mozart didn't write this music for your unborn child. He couldn't care less to tell you the truth. I think he'd be pretty mad seeing how his music is being exploited these days. Why can't people just buy and listen to classical music as it was intended. Buy a set of Mozart's violin concertos or maybe Don Giovanni if you're so inclined. But not this "potpourri excerpts from his work" trash. Another option is to listen to the local classical radio station. Gosh, these kinds of CDs have gone too far. What's next - "Tchaikovsky for Taking a Dump"? Sheeesh....Don't suport this if you care about preserving an art...

5 out of 5 stars Nice compilation; good brand.......2005-07-19

I really like this series of compilations that Phillips has released. I own a number of these discs, and they are all quality recordings. Because I know that the music is excellent, and I trust the brand, discs such as Mozart for Mommies and Daddies make wonderful gfits. I have given this particular one to a number of my friends who have had children recently. It is a great way to introduce your child, or your family (you included) to classical music. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music, 1 star for the lies they tell you.......2005-03-12

When it comes to the music, you certainly can do worse than this, but PLEASE, people, enough with this "Mozart makes baby smarter" BS, it SIMPLY ISN'T TRUE. This is all based on extremely tenuous data that has never stood up to empirical testing, and these days serves more as an excuse for hucksters to buy the rights to assorted recordings, slap together a Mozart CD on the cheap, and make a few quick bucks.

Are you just using this for your kid to fall asleep by? I guess that is all well and good, but it doesn't have to be Mozart. Branch out a little, for crying out loud! My 19-month-old daughter went to sleep a couple of nights ago to Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms," and last week it was Copland's "Billy the Kid" ballet. If she turns out to be a brainiac, I doubt very much it is from the music, although I hope she grows up to have a more sophisticated musical palate than her peers. But it has been my experience that if she is tired enough, she will fall asleep to damn near anything. If that is the case, why enrich some scam artist?

5 out of 5 stars Superior Performances. Mozart is Food for the Brain........2002-11-17

What differentiates this collection from other "Mozart for young children" CD's is that it is played by classical music virtuosos. Some of the biggest names are included, and the performances are outstanding.

Playing quality music like this on a daily basis in the background or in the car will help your child's development in many areas. Mozart is food for the brain.

I also highly recommend any other piano works (sonatas, variation, trios, etc.) by Mozart.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Work of Jazz From a Tight Trio.......2006-07-27

There are only two reasons I purchased this album, and that was because of two of the tracks. Track 6 is called "Theme for Basie" and is a delight to hear. With Sam Jones on bass and Leroy Haynes on drums, the ensemble playing sparkles with a clean tight sound. You can almost sense Count Basie smiling at what the trio does with this tune.

Track 4 is Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss," and I really wanted to buy this CD only to hear this track over and over again. Leroy Vinegar (bass) and Milt Turner (drums) help make this a very pleasant tribute to Ellington. Every time I listen to "Prelude to a Kiss" I wonder with amazement how Duke Ellington came up with this very beautiful composition.

Don't be deceived by my 3-star rating. The only reason I gave the album 3 stars was because I wasn't very impressed or interesting in the other seven tracks. I found myself jumping to the next track to see if that one would capture my attention. It didn't. Were I to rate the album based soley on tracks #4 and #6 (especially #4), I would give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz piano as it should be played ! PERIOD !.......2004-08-02

Boppin' and burnin' !! Tons of fun and deepness in Phineas's music !! Probably one of the five most talented piano player in the whole history of jazz, Phineas was simply a marvel with the ivories. I can't understand people's complaining about excess of technique in Phineas music. What's the point? For this people a pianist or a jazz musician should play only at medium or slow tempos or only play simple to be taken seriously. What's the point? I think it is a lack of understanding of the real beauty of music. For me it is never a matter of speed or of simple things against complex things .. it is always a matter of beauty! And Phineas knew the meaning of the word for sure. Moreover bebop language is a complex idiom, think of Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie .. did they play slow? Did they play simple ? Of course not !! Were them little musicians? Obviously not, they were simply the greatest Jazz players of all time .. so what? What's wrong with Phineas need for speed? He always delivers a great music experience. He touch me in the deepest just when he play at the highest speed. Playing fast and RIGHT saying things is a something few players can do. But Phineas can play spectacular and emotionally deep slow solos too. Listen how he played on "Prelude to a kiss" for example .. of course there are some doublings here and there but Bird would do them too ... man Phineas plays magnificiently with octaves, block chords, I mean, he was incredible.
This album is a wonderful bebop album. I treasure every album Phineas did. He was a master and he will always be one of my all time favourite musician. And I am a Jazz guitarist not a pianist. Enough said.

2 out of 5 stars Technical brilliance; soulless grandstanding.......2001-07-10

Great musicians who are unusually gifted, who do not use their talents with restraint and taste, come off as arrogant. When technique overwhelms, the music is compromised. This is the problem with Phineas Newborn (and Oscar Peterson). Not content to play the right notes beautifully, they must play a hundred notes to show you that they can. While Newborn's fingers are Tatumesque in their "virtuosity", the same can't be said for his taste. Compare his treatment of "Celia" to Bud Powell's original Verve recording. Newborn guts the delicate, almost lacy song and plays breakneck. Powell, who possessed the greatest piano skills of anyone after (and some say, including) Tatum, never obscured the music he played with displays of technique. Newborn botches "This Here" as well. Bobby Timmons' tune, sanctified and groove-infused, is rendered soulless by Phineas. Newborn is a piano player extraordinaire. But there is a difference between a piano player and a musician.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2001-06-17

Probably one of the most underappreciated jazz musician of all time--this a amazing. Listen to Phineas' version of Bud Powell's "Celia" and Benny Golson's"Domingo"

5 out of 5 stars Phineas cuts Oscar, Tatum, and even Bud Powell........1999-03-18

He is a monster. At first, I was just thrilled by Oscar Peterson's playing (and I still am) but then I heard Phineas Newborn Jr. You can even hear in his playing some things that Oscar has borrowed from him. Listen to Phineas for some of the greatest work in parallel lines. From start to finish, you will need to wear a seat belt for this cd. He is great!!!!!

From his emergence in the mid-1950s, Phineas Newborn was one of the most technically brilliant two-handed pianists who ever played jazz. Belonging to a virtuoso lineage that included Art Tatum and Bud Powell, he regularly inspired comparison with Oscar Peterson. Newborn would readily tear off runs in octaves with an ease that would be impressive with single notes, improvise complex solos with his left hand against right-hand trills, and crush complex explosions of notes between the phrases of a ballad. His playing seemed tautly suspended between sheer technical excess and manic creative fire, but he also had an ingrained feeling for the blues, honed in the Memphis bands of his youth. Harlem Blues was recorded in 1969, when Newborn had been out of the studios for some years, and he's joined by the dynamic team of Ray Brown on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, stellar accompanists who stoke Newborn's singular fire on the title tune, a brash up-date of stride and boogie-woogie, and on a hard-swinging version of Horace Silver's "Cookin' at the Continental." Probably the most potent rhythm section that Newborn was ever matched with, Brown and Jones are also wise enough to let the pianist follow his own shifting paths on such standards as "Sweet and Lovely" and "Stella by Starlight." More than two decades after his death, Newborn's explosive piano approach continues to be felt in succeeding generations of fellow-Memphis pianists like Harold Mabern and Geoff Keezer. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Buried Treasure Found.......2004-04-01

"Buried Treasure Found" a review of the Phineas Newborn, Jr. trio recording _Harlem Blues_ with Ray Brown, double bass and Elvin Jones, drums ([?Yokohama] Japan: Victor Entertainment, Inc., [c1999]) (VICJ-60374 Compact Disc) originally produced by Lester Koenig and recorded at Los Angeles, CA: Contemporary Records, 12-13 February 1969 (S-7634). 7 tracks; TT 38:30; "an Extended Resolution Compact Disc 2 [XRCD2] re-mastering by Alan Yoshida, A&M Mastering Studios, Hollywood, CA". Original liner notes by John Koenig. Program booklet (12 pp.) integrated with CD card-stock case with notes in Japanese.

My one disappointment with this recording is its total time of less than 39 minutes. Would that the experts and engineers had dug deeper in the "vaults" for whatever else these musicians recorded those two February days in 1969. (The liner notes report that some 15 tunes were recorded by this trio during the two days they were in studio.) But, I'll go with what is on this JVC XRCD2 re-issue. This is a wonderful, happy, technically challenging trio performance, recorded when (we have been told by Ken Burns and others) jazz was all but dead and in need of resuscitation. Not so.

Phineas Newborn, Memphis born and raised (in his youth a contemporary of Memphis-born trumpeter Booker Little), is all over the piano, making musical allusions to his teachers and peers, pianists Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson. Ray Brown, true to form, propels the trio the same way he did when with O.P. Elvin Jones, the new comer to this setting, provides the asymmetric, polyrhythmic drive familiar to all who love the work of the John Coltrane Quartet.

`Harlem's Blues' a gospel blues doodle by Newborn which his fellow musicians asked be worked into this recording session and which ended up serving as its title, could be Memphis' Blues for all I know, but one thing for sure - it swings. Bluesy `Sweet and Lovely' and bouncy `Little Girl Blue' are great show tunes that jazz musicians love to work through, and Newborn lavishes their renderings here with technical wonderment. `Ray's Idea' (Brown's composition) is a bouncy, bop line that reminds me of Bud Powell and gives Jones an opportunity to exchange astounding, off-center `fours' with Newborn. `Stella by Starlight' lets Newborn settle into an almost complete solo approach to this wonderful tune. The bass introduction to `Tenderly' gives the listener a wonderful and all-too-rare example of the brilliant solo work of Ray Brown. `Cookin' at the Continental' (Horace Silver) is an up-tempo ride and Elvin is doing the cookin' behind his colleagues.

For those interested in the origins of tunes, John Koenig, in his liner notes, tells us the story behind `Tenderly'. This beautiful standard was written by Walter Gross, pianist at the now defunct LA Sunset Strip club, The Embers. Ray Brown would go to listen to Gross and asked him to play this song and that's how Brown learned it. The song [Koenig says] was introduced by Sarah Vaughn in the late 1940s when Gross, as musical director for Musicraft Records, had Vaughn record it for that label. The things one can learn from liner notes. This recording by Phineas Newborn, Jr. is truly an example of buried treasure found.

Man, Phineas Newborn with Ray Brown and Elvin Jones in 1969, this album (and the other two this trio recorded too) is absolutly SPECTACULAR !!!!!!!!! Incredible, incredible fantastic jazz trio music!! Phineas Newborn was REALLY one of the most technically brilliant two-handed pianists who ever played jazz. Few can match his ability at the keyboard. Tatum, Powell, Victor Feldman, Oscar Peterson, very few. Maybe Petrucciani in that kind of language. His lines are magnificient bebop lines with a really fantastic blues touch. The opener Harlem Blues tells the whole story. But when you'll reach Ray's idea, a typical bebop theme by Brown, you'll enter in jazz heaven ! A-MA-ZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutly to have if you love jazz. Phineas was STELLAR !!! I can't say more than this!! FIRE music !!!

    5 out of 5 stars Phineas' Finest.......2007-06-27

The masterful Memphis piano legend in the company of fellow musical giants, playing a set of strong compositions, recorded beautifully at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1961. This CD is a must have for lovers of modern jazz, and music lovers in general!

    5 out of 5 stars Non-stop Swing.......2004-04-02

For all his amazing technical abilities, Phineas is tragically obscure, even within the jazz circle. The jazz books I've read make no mention of Phineas Newborn, Jr, and that is a real shame. Because he is a truly remarkable player, on par and maybe even above Oscar Peterson. And this album showcases Phineas extremely well. I have owned this album for a little more than a year now, and I still play it very often. It is one of my favorite jazz albums that I own.
Every performance on this CD is incredible. Tracks like "Cheryl" and "Oleo" show that Phineas can dazzle you at fast tempos, while performances like "Lush Life" and "For Carl" show that Phineas can play very beautifully. "Lush Life" is one of my favorite tracks on this CD. And for medium swinging gospel-flavored performances, look to his sassy rendition of "Juicy Lucy" (originally by Horace Silver). He also delves into Latin jazz with Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca", which is difficult to make interesting on a piano, but Phineas conquers it. There is a wide variety of styles and tempos to be found here, and Phineas shows that he can master them all.
This is an album that will stick with you. I found it very accessible, very swinging, and very impressive. It is diverse without losing the flow an album must have. I was not sure what to expect when I bought this album. But I'll tell you what to expend: greatness. If you're even just getting interested in jazz, I think this album is essential to any jazz fans collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Must-have jazz cd!.......2001-10-15

World of Piano is definitely one of the most complete cd's i own. It ranges from songs that fly by like Oleo, to the incredible ballad interpretation of Lush Life. Earlier Phineas recordings just showed off his unbelievable talent, but this album shows off his amazing musicianship as well. With all-star trios, he is backed up by some of the best. The album really swings...Phineas Newborn has a drive like i've never heard in any other piano player. He's able to use both hands to create a masterpiece...this album captures him in his prime, a rare opportunity to hear the memphis-born piano genius with all the stops out. Other suggestions: Great Jazz Piano, Solo Piano, and Harlem Blues (and Here is Phineas if you want to be blown away completely).

2 out of 5 stars Newborn is a world of piano alright. A world unto himself........2001-07-10

Newborn, like Oscar Peterson, cannot leave well enough alone. They must pound you with their brilliance and technical skills, past the point of tolerance. No doubt, Newborn has chops. But he doesn't play the music. He plays himself. It gets old quickly.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Jazz Piano all on one record!.......1998-11-02

I was thirteen years old when my mother bought the original vinyl recording of this CD in 1962. I was captivated from the moment she first played it. I knew, even at my young age, that we were listening to something extraordinary. I played the groves off that record, and if it is possible I'll probably play the bits off this CD. If you like Jazz Piano and want to listen to a master you need to get this CD! Pay particular attention to Phineas' rendition of the Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn composition "Lush Life". Newborn opens it with a quote from Ravel's Sonatine.

      1. Martin Pearlman Discusses Music Of The Moravians

      Amazon.com

When the subject of 18th-century music comes up, the United States is rarely considered any sort of creative artistic bastion. But this collection of Moravian religious music reveals how deep a fallacy it is to write off the U.S. as unimportant in vocal music history. The Moravian Church, founded on the cusp of the 14th and 15th centuries, would generate a distinctly musical worship tradition in the 1700s, just prior to the first Moravians settling in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Once in Pennsylvania, the music flowed at a brisk pace, comprising significant sections of worship ceremonies. Composers included in this collection reflect two particular facets of the music: its harmonic simplicity and its abiding spiritual values. Of course, "simplicity" is an easily derogatory descriptive, but that is not at all the case here. These choral works display tremendous richness and depth, with traces of J.S. Bach's cantatas as well as works by Haydn and even Mozart, who developed on a parallel musical track to the Moravians. And there are pop smarts here, too: One of the songs even quotes the Star Spangled Banner, then a ditty for the masses. The period instruments create a fine chamber background--music that floats without weighting the vocals or tearing ears away. A second bonus CD contains an extended discussion with Martin Pearlman, whose discussion of the music is more than enlightening. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted, captures the spirit.......2000-07-31

This recording truly seems to capture the spirit of the music. As someone who grew up singing in the Moravian church, this cd is a FIND. I listened with joy and surprise to this collection. The execution is tender, passionate, thoughtful. The balance between vocals and chamber orchestra is lovely, as close to perfect as one might imagine. I know many of the works on this cd as hymns and choral anthems, albeit in English. The uplifting musicality as an important part of worship was and continues to be part of the life of the Moravian church. The Moravian tradition embodies folk music in an authentic fashion, where the music of the church is truly the music of the people. Singing is a part of all activities within the church, providing a fabric through which fellowship and goodwill can flow. Somehow, the spirit of the context is captured here. The commentary by Martin Pearlman is quite informative and respectful. For individuals for whom music in the church has been more than an interlude in worship, for other Moravians out there who are far from the fold and can still hear the echoes, for those who are curious and want to listen to something slightly, pleasantly, off the beaten path, you will not be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful!.......1999-07-30

This is very pretty music. It reminds me in some ways of Handel's Messiah, but it has a sound all its own. The voices and instruments are supurb. I really enjoyed the accompanying insert in the CD, which gives a small biography of all the composers. There are complete lyrics in English and German as well. I would love to get the sheet music and perform it!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music played with clarity and feeling.......1999-03-24

I just heard the Christmas section on PBS radio. "Lost music"? As one raised in the Moravian tradition, I can sing along with some of these chorales in English. Why? Because songs such as "Thou Child Divine" are sung every year at Christmas even today. I am ordering to see whether translations are provided. Also, to compare with other current reworkings of the classical Moravian composers. As a footnote, the Moravian Music Foundation publishes newly found works from the archives every two or three years. Thus many works are not lost, but newly mined.
