Ever wonder what happened to Buffalo Tom, the seminal Boston trio whose early-'90s songs were splashed about alternative radio and MTV? They're back, and one spin of their first record since 1998's Smitten gives the impression that they never left and that a decade has gone by faster than a Tom Maginnis drumroll. The melodies still rumble with elegance. The choruses are instantly unforgettable. And the band's original members--Maginnis, Bill Janovitz (guitar/vocals), and Chris Colbourn (bass/vocals)--remain intact and chillingly in synch. While it might be apropos to say they have matured with age, as all three have seen 40 pass them by, the angst and innocence of these 13 songs could easily have come blasting out of 1992. Rockers "September Shirt," "Bottom of the Rain," and "Good Girl" surely entice, but it's the power-poppiness of "Renovating" and "CC and Callas" (both sung by the underrated Colbourn) that drift back to the band's staples like "Taillights Fade" and "Mineral." Add to that canon the radiant melody of "You'll Never Catch Him," where Janovitz's gravelly tenor complements a radiant hook that, together, recapture the brilliance of this essential American band. --Scott Holter

another waste of time reunion just like Dinosaur Jr's. just like J Mascis And The Fog's Free So Free was a better album than Beyond, Bill Janovitz And Crown Victoria's Fireworks On TV was a much better album than this.

Three Easy Pieces sounds exactly like what you would hope a new Buffalo Tom album would sound like. Though it's reminiscent of the band's earlier work, it continues the steady maturity the group has displayed on its progression of albums. This growing maturity, however, does not require sacrificing hook-laden songs that reverberate in your brain long after they have stopped playing.

5 out of 5 stars Staple my Lips to my Heart.......2007-03-17

I bought this album on cassette when it came out in 92 and wore it down to the point that it was warped. I was in high school shortly after that and never went around to getting another copy. Thankfully I came back and realized that I wanted to listen to something that I hadn't heard in a long time. This was only about fifteen years later. Thank god I picked this copy up on CD. What a raw album. Tales of heartbreak, longing, and just plain fun. If you really want to rock out, listen to "Staples", "Velvet Roof", and "Saving Grace". But if you really want to listen to a great song, pop in "Mineral". Awesome. I love Buffalo Tom, and this by far, is their best album.

5 out of 5 stars A Close Friend.......2006-01-19

This is one of the most deceptively simple-sounding albums you'll ever hear. On first listen, the songs sound melodic, pleasant enough; you may feel an undercurrent of urgency in the rhythms, but nothing overwhelming. That's OK. You just wait. The Toms have more in store for you. Let Me Come Over is the type of album that only gets better with each listen.
The songs on this album are all first rate, from the blistering opening track "Staples" to "Larry"'s heart-wrenching feedback fadeout to the straight-ahead ass kicking rock of "Velvet Roof" and "Saving Grace" to the lonely, wistfully beautiful, hopelessly romantic "Frozen Lake." Every song is exceptional, but what makes the album greater than the sum of its songs is the remarkable track sequencing. This is not a "concept album" nor do the songs have any thematic link that I am aware
of, but the way each track perfectly complements the last couldn't have been accidental.
Let Me Come Over is also a shining example of how to incorporate personal, introspective lyrics into songs without ever coming across as pretentious or self-pitying. Bill Janovitz uses universal imagery to help the listener relate to, rather than just hear, his lyrics. When he sings "I feel so small/ underneath it all/ but I'm closing in on it" on "Taillights Fade," you know he's not just some wimp in the dumps. This music tells you that yeah, life isn't so hot right now, but hey, you're not alone.
This album has really aged well, to the point that I now consider it more of a close friend than a rock album. I highly recommend Let Me Come Over to anyone who needs a friend, or a great rock album, or a close friend and a great rock album in one.

5 out of 5 stars blazing.........2004-05-31

to see bt live around the time of this recording was to experience an event. The venues were lifted, dropped, rattled. The kids filed out, grinning, shaken and ringing. IF you were there too, then you know...
This album is about as good as fuzzbox power pop gets. If you were around listening to pop music in the early 90's, and missed them, ya better keep your mouth shut about it, cause your canon is incomplete. Yes, there were a few really good bands then. BT was one of them.
I blew out a set of headphones with this.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive opus from the best 3-piece band ever!.......2004-05-29

Let Me Come Over is Buffalo Tom's best work. The songs are variously sweet, tragic, and melodic, but also heartbreakingly relatable tales of life, love, and loss. Its blend of jangling guitars, distortion, and lyrics (laced with the morose-hope that is so uniquely Buffalo Tom) stood as a powerful counterpoint to the "grunge" sound coming from Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Buffalo Tom represent the culmination of growth and perspective that brought us to the era of post-punk and emo.

A must-have for any serious collector of influential music, or fan of indi-rock, it stands the test of time as the best album by a trio ever. Buffalo Tom is the band that gave me permission to musically grow up, and for that I thank them.

5 out of 5 stars An album that speaks to your moods.......2002-11-01

Yes its true, this is one of the greatest albums of the nineties, and it has stood the test of time, I've had in nearly constant rotation for 11, yes 11 years and it still is fresh and speaks to any mood I'm in. When I want to jump up and feel an adrenaline rush I throw on Daryl or Staples, when I want to smile about the wonders of the world I can listen to Porchlight and frozen lake, and when I feel down the voices, the tone, and the composition lift me, this is a fantastic album you should own, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Several Here are Missing the Point.......2001-08-30

Several reviewers have lamented the song choice on this CD, apparently blind to the fact, despite it being crystal clear in the title (go figure), that it is a collection of A-sides (read: singles). Thus, any complaints about songs being left off should be directed to the band, label, and/or whomever decided what tunes were going to be singles on each album. That said, this CD is a strong compilation from a great singles band (which is not to say their albums are weak), though it offers nothing new to the already initiated, besides the awesome and enlightening liner notes. So if you are new to BT, this is a nice, cozy welcome to their sound and its evolution. If you arent new, buy it for the notes and glean some nice nuggets o' information straight from the horses mouth(es). peace out.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative Band.......2001-06-28

Buffalo Tom is one of the greatest alternative bands that ever set foot on a stage. I love this album.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection with just a couple of missing tunes.......2001-06-26

If you are relatively new to Buffalo Tom, before you buy their "A-Sides" compilation you will want to know that there are two competing schools of thought on the band's merits. One group sees them as a major force in early 90s indie rock who lost their way and "sold out" in search of the big hit single. These folks see the Buffalo Tom debut album and the BirdBrain album - which was produced by Indie God J. Mascis, as the band's rawest (and therefore best) work. Their third album, "Let Me Come Over," is seen as a capitulation to a more MTV-friendly sound, and it's mostly downhill from there.

The other school of Buffalo Tom thought, which is closer to my own, is that Buffalo Tom's first two albums, while hinting at their potential, are the signs of a band searching for a sound and identity of their own. That identity was then found in spectacular fashion on Let Me Come Over, which represented a quantum leap in songwriting and ushered in an era of unforgettable compositions that have put Buffalo Tom on many people's short lists of the great undiscovered bands of the nineties.

These two perspectives are important to your purchase of the A-sides CD, because if you are one of those people who liked Buffalo Tom better as J. Mascis proteges and indie rock stylists, you won't want to buy this compilation, as the first two albums are not well represented here. On the other hand, if you heard a couple of their later songs on the radio, and you're wondering if there's more where that came from, then this compilation, which is one of the most thoughtfully-selected best-of compilations out there, is a great starting point for you.

The most memorable Buffalo Tom songs can be roughly categorized into two separate groups - melodic rockers ("Soda Jerk" being the most famous of this group), and edgy, almost-tragic ballads, of which "Taillights Fade" is the most well known example, along with "Late at Night" from the My So-Called Life soundtrack. The big problem with this A-Sides CD is that one of Buffalo Tom's classic ballads, "Would Not be Denied," a standout from the Big Red Letter Day album, is not included on this compilation. So if you like the songs on this CD, you have to get your hands on "Would Not Be Denied" at once. And then one of their very best rockers, "Porchlight," from Let Me Come Over, is also missing here. So you have to pick up that album as well, which is probably worth your trouble anyway since many people see that as their best and most consistent album. But once you own both of those albums, you already have almost half the songs on this compilation. So the question is: what good is this album if you have to buy two others anyway? The biggest benefit from buying the A-Sides CD is that you also get the two best songs from their two last albums, "Summer" and "Wiser." These last two albums, Sleepy Eyed and Smitten, while interesting, are not essential purchases for the casual fan once you have already accounted for the crucial song on each of them. If you are interested in more background on Buffalo Tom, I am also writing a longer retrospective that I can email to you if you'd like. Send me an email at jonreed@mediaone.net.

The first two albums by Buffalo Tom showed that the Massachusetts trio had studied its heroes (Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du), learned their guitar-rock vocabulary, and mastered the ability to put it across. But the band didn't have much original to add, and although Let Me Come Over and Birdbrain were pleasant listening, they were quickly forgotten. Big Red Letter Day is more dynamic, peeling away the layers of fuzz guitar to reveal acoustic guitar and Bill Janovitz' simple but compelling vocal melodies. The album emphasizes the lyrics, which stand up to the scrutiny, and "Soda Jerk," "Would Not Be Denied," and "Anything That Way" are the best songs the band has written. --Jim DeRogatis

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-06-18

I've got a few thousand albums and this is my favorite. Enuf said.

    4 out of 5 stars Comfortable, Straight-Ahead Rock.......2005-06-20

I found this in the used section a few days ago, and have been traveling around with it. This band has a sound kinda like Counting Crows or Gin Blossoms, with maybe a touch of John Mellencamp at times. It's not twang-y roots rock / but does feel kinda indie.

It's versatile, adult-feeling music. The lyrics speak a lot about the messiness of life, and the regrets we try to let go of. I find it likeable.

The vocals can be kinda raspy at times, and I was tempted to ding it for that and give it 3 stars... but I decided 4 is supportable.

4 out of 5 stars "The moon was full your whisky sour".......2004-05-02

I bought Big Red Letter Day back in the early 1990s during my first year in college and it was one of my most played CDs at the time. Playing it now 11 years later, it still sounds great. Even though it was classified as "alternative" with "Sodajerk" getting decent play on MTV's 120 Minutes during its release, it is really just good, solid rock 'n roll with some Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. influence and a smidgen of country sound here and there. No song jumps out on this album, but there is nothing weak here either. It is a good CD to pop in and hit "repeat all."

Buffalo Tom was a trio formed in 1986 in Massachusetts who built up a following with fuzz-laden guitars, effervescent melodies and muscle-building tours. Big Red Letter Day was the band's major label debut. The band made a little news when a magazine that had a regular "Cute Band Alert" section, changed the title to "Cute Drummer Alert" especially for BT drummer Tom Maginnis (I think the other two guys are cute, too). Guitarist Bill Janovitz does most of the vocal duties. He has a good, no nonsense rock 'n roll voice. Bassist Chris Colbourne provides vocals on "My Responsibility" and "Late at Night," seemingly about troubled fatherhood. These songs are a little less testosterone-driven. Colbourne does not have a very strong voice but the songs are catchy. I still find myself humming "Late at Night." Some songs are a little slower than others, but there are no true ballads here. Other tracks just rock like "Tree House" that ends with some gospel singing by the Water Sisters. Big Red Letter Day is a solid CD that has aged very well.

5 out of 5 stars Very good all around.......2003-08-17

Even though there songs have been used on commercials, people still don't who this group is. And that is a shame. There light rock sounds are calming. I love this album.

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem.......2002-01-26

The kiss of death for Buffalo Tom might have been getting stuck with the "alternative" label. Because to call them "alternative" was to deny them the mass audience they so richly deserved.

Buffalo Tom, not a guy but a Boston-based trio, skillfully transformed traditional song styles into idiosyncratic rockers and electric ballads, in the same way that REM transformed "New Southern Rock" into something much more. Forget the comparisons to Dinosaur Jr.: this band, and Big Red Letter Day, are successful on their own terms.

Produced by the Robb Brothers, responsible for producing hitmakers like Neil Diamond, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, the Bay City Rollers and fellow-Bostonians the Lemonheads, the CD is probably Buffalo Tom's most accessible, featuring deceptively simple melodies, dynamic guitars, and some of the band's best lyrics.

The CD opens with the confident "Sodajerk", which features the Water Sisters (Rolling Stones) and the immortal opening lines: "Watch an eyeball/take a free fall/At the mention of a name/In its socket/Like a rocket/It rises just the same."

Other standouts include "My Responsibility" (and the great lyrics, "I don't like that joke, and I don't want to smell like smoke"), "Torch Singer" and the rocking "Tree House" and "Dry Land".

Overlooked in its day, Big Red Letter Day is an easy gem that's well deserving of your hard-earned dollars.

    3 out of 5 stars Good, Consistent.......2005-06-20

I think I'd rate this one just a notch below Big Red Letter Day. It reminds me of John Mellencamp and (excuse me BT fans) Hootie and the Blowfish. Not great singing, but it has feeling and pathos to it.

There are some very good songs here, although 14 tracks is a bit heavy for a CD. A little more judicious use of space, keeping 10 or 11 of the best songs here, would make it a 4 star album.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best Buffalo Tom album, but the most audible.......2004-06-11

Sleepy Eyed will not be entered into the long list of 'classic' albums. BT is already in that list with their debut album and also with 'Let Me Come Over'. Sleepy Eyed has no bad songs and it a lot of fun listening to. The jumpy Tangerine, It's You and Kitchen Door are great songs. Great thing is that they made songs that sound great, but are easy as well and that's a gift. 4 of 5 basic chords but it sounds like Buffalo Tom.

The opening riff of Sunday Night is great and the song itself is not bad. It makes you want to shout along with Bill Janovitz, and you probably will.

5 out of 5 stars Why this is one of the best CDs ever..........2004-01-24

Irish Indie music "2FM" radio Presenter Dave Fanning rated this is as the #1 best album between 1995 and 1998.

    What does that mean?

Plenty since this guy was co-founder of U2 and helped launch their career.

BT is nothing like U2 but listen to "Summer" from this CD and you will see how catchy they are. This is an A+ album. All the tracks are fantastic. It will have you hooked.

    4 out of 5 stars Rock on!.......2003-06-18

I enjoyed this album, it being introduced to me by a friend and therefor the first time I heard Buffalo Tom. Sunday Night, Sparkler, and Summer were some major high points for me. However, for me the gem on this album was Twenty Points. Incredible song. Anyhoo, the reason I like the whole album is that the lyrics are great, and I love the sound of the guitar. If I had to pick one song to kick off, though, it would be Your stripes. I don't really know why, it just doesn't seem on par with the rest. The rest of the album is most excellent!! Give it a shot!

5 out of 5 stars The best studio album by Buffalo Tom.......2000-11-05

This is by far the best album put out by Buffalo Tom. Of all the albums I have played for friends, this is the only one with a 100% success ration. That being said, I belive that Buffalo Tom's appeal spreads beyond just my own opinion.

A combination of alternative and pop, Buffalo Tom's sound is what bands such as Third Eye Blind have buil themselves upon. If you are a fan of either genre, this is a surfire album.

Yep, I agree with the guy below. No matter what else is said about this album - It is awesome and probably in the top three debut albums ever. I seen them support the Wedding Present in the UK on this tour, before I had even heard of them. Bear in mind that in the late 80's the Wedding Present were one of the best live acts around, well Buffalo Tom blew them of the planet. To finish, from start to end a masterpiece and if 'The Bus' doesn't make you cry then you are not human!!

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2000-05-21

4 out of 5 stars The start of something amazing..........1999-06-03

BT's first record is clever, loud and brilliant...two records later is when they went beyond briliant. This record is about their balls.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful last fling.......2006-04-19

I'm disappointed by the negative reactions I've read to this wonderful album, which sadly turned out to be the group's swansong. Having seen them live back in 1996, when they were loud, tight and terrific, I saw the scope for stretching out that was fulfilled in their subsequent albums. "Smitten" shows a new depth in their songwriting (albeit tinged with melancholy) and Bill Janovitz has seldom been in finer voice, especially on "Postcard" and "Scottish Windows". The band's rockier side is not neglected; witness "White Paint Morning" and the broody "Knot In It", and Chris Colbourn chips in with some typical irony in "Rachael" and "The Bible".
Like all Buffalo Tom's work, repeated listening is rewarded. They remain one of the great underrated groups of the 1990s and I miss them sorely.

    2 out of 5 stars Smitten.......2002-05-13

Buffulo Tom's move away from inspired, driving pop-punk rock to a more mature, straight-forward pop sound is a bit of a disappointment for me. It's good to add other instruments to create new textures to their music, because you can't keep doing the same thing over and over, but they sacraficed too much of their harder edge and created a softer, more bland sound. None of these songs are horrible, but they don't do anything for me either. It's pleasant background music, nothing more.

5 out of 5 stars an uncommenly crafted album of what would serve as singles.......2000-02-06

Before the purchase of this CD I had heard Buffalo Tom fleetingly, on the '95 Fort Apache Album. So I did not know what to expect from the band in a broader sense. My first impressions were good, the uncompicated songs are very well blended for what they are and that as an album it is scencerely well planned out. (Although maybe 'the bible' would have served as a more enticing opener) As time progressed I caught myself humming lines to many of the tracks, as the catchy tunes grew on me and lodged themselves into my brain. I have to admit they've stayed there ever since and I rate this as one of my favourite albums released in '98, if not the 90's as a whole. Songs are sung with passion and you get a real sense that the band believe what they're telling you within each track. The level of the songs does not at all deteriorate throughout the Album and hence it is difficult to pick stand out tracks. The gentle guitar of 'postcard', 'the bible' and 'scottish windows', the poinient 'register side' and 'see to me' along with the magnificently distorted 'knot in it' all noteworthy. It is also good to see the band branching into (retrospective: since purchasing this album I've run up a veritable Buffalo Tom back cataloge) lyrics that question truths and tackle life issues. I've used this album recently to convert people who say "Buffalo Tom, arn't they that band that murdered 'going underground'?" into genuine fans of the band, and it could do the same for you. Purchase this album and listen to the music on it, then you'll see what I mean. You will not be dissapointed, and in my opinion, it's their best album so far. If you have older songs and like them, I'm telling you, these are better. Better written, better played and, well, you fill in the rest. This album bears similarities in style to their past albums but with an extra final coat that pushes it beyond them and any similar effort I'm aware of. In it's genre this is definately the one to take with you to an island. Not that I'm planning to do anything this ceremonial, demonstrative or drastic, but just in case you are... I can't wait to see where the next album takes us. Smitten is a modern classic from an understated band that, no doubt, time will cruelly neglect.

and I enjoy it. The first two tracks "Racheal" and "Postcard" remind me a good deal of the Wallflowers...the other songs are good, but not great. I like this CD, but then again, I got it for 6 bucks used, so I don't know if I would pay full retail price...

4 out of 5 stars NOT a Collection of Throwaways.......2002-05-22

It has been my experience that, for the majority of the time, b-sides, outtakes, demos and soundtrack contributions from musical artists are usually left off of "official" albums for very good reason. Sure, it's fun to collect oddities and cover songs but, generally speaking, they rarely compare to the album material and/or singles. So it's very refreshing to find this collection from Buffalo Tom that sets a shining example of how these types of collections should be done. The generous 18 tracks of b-sides, compilation contributions, and covers found on "Besides" (which should only be purchased after you buy "Asides") span the band's ten plus year career and includes some really nice tracks that are on par with their best work. Many long-time fans have probably heard many of these songs before but the two new "previously unreleased" tracks , "Anchors Aweigh" and a cover of Teenage Fanclub's "Guiding Star" are worth adding to any previous collection you may have put together. Also included are a fun soundcheck cover of the Stones' "The Spider and the Fly", the terrific "Never Noticed" and the piano driven "Bumble Bee". The band also contributes some good liner notes to the collection, explaining the origins of these tunes and why they didn't make it on to any of their full-length albums. For fans of the band this is a must own and for new fans, I suggest "Asides" (a best-of collection) first, followed by this one...the "Ying" (Asides) is better overall but this "Yang" is also a lot of fun.
