When Elliott Smith died late in 2003, he took with him one of the unique songwriting gifts of his generation: part folk grandeur, part punk fury, and virtually bottomless in eight short years of solo recordings. Thankfully for that generation, and many to come, he left behind two dozen songs that his Portland, Oregon, producer and pal Larry Crane has crafted into a retrospective celebration of Smith's contribution to music. Mostly house-recorded demos plucked from the fertile three years that followed his 1994 debut Roman Candle (including an early take of "Miss Misery"), there's an eminent clarity to these songs that makes them sound like they were recorded yesterday. A lone acoustic guitar is the general accompaniment to Smith's lamenting wail, his self-deprecating lyrics forever a contrast to the sheer beauty of the melodies. "What are you doing hanging out with me?" he asks in "Whatever (Folk Song in C)," his double-tracked harmonies mocking both Simon and Garfunkel. Along with fragile versions of "Angel in the Snow," "Looking over My Shoulder," and a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," it's as eternal as anything Smith offered when he was with us, and, as one of several shining moments, makes you forget he ever left. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Disc One: 01. Angel In The Snow From the Jan/Feb 1995 sessions at Leslie Uppinghouse's home studio that yielded much of the S/T record. Elliott's mix appeared on a CD that came with Mike McGonigal's magazine, Yeti: Volume I.

02. Talking to Mary From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. This is Elliott's rough mix as the master tape is sadly missing.

03. High Times From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. An early working title was "Coma Kid". The "drums" are really just doubled snare (with the throw off loose) and ride cymbal.

04. New Monkey From sessions for Either/Or. The "bar" was certainly La Luna in Portland, with "the millions of fans ignoring the bands."

05. Looking Over My Shoulder From sessions for Either/Or. The title of this song is not certain.

06. Going Nowhere From sessions for Either/Or. Due to the limits of eight tracks you rarely get bass guitar on these sessions unless it is integral to the arrangement. One of the most haunting songs in this collection.

07. Riot Coming From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Notice the excellent melodic electric guitar part.

08. "All Cleaned Out" This song was tracked at Jackpot! Recording Studio in early 1997. The title is an assumption as there were no notes on or in the tape box.

09. First Timer Tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. With different lyrics this song has seen life as "Ghost Writer" or "From a Poisoned Well". Elliott recorded the guitars too loud to tape in this collection, hence the occasional "chunk" noise.

10. Go By From sessions for Either/Or. Recorded to 8-track by Elliott in 1996, but then bounced to 2" tape by Rob and Tom where they added overdubs. It was obviously a contender for Either/Or at some point. Early versions of the song were known as "Bye Bye" and "Two Timed".

11. Miss Misery (early version) This song was tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. It was later recut with lyric changes at Jackpot! and used in the film, Good Will Hunting.

12. Thirteen This Big Star/Alex Chilton song featured often in Elliott's live sets and in the Lucky Three short film by Jem Cohen. This version was recorded by Rob Jones and Elliott Smith in Elliott's Basement in April 1996 and was broadcast June 1, 1996, on Rob's Locals Show on KWVA 88.1 Eugene, OR. This was a simple live take with acoustic guitar and vocals.

Disc Two: 01. Georgia, Georgia From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Even though it was older, it was an early contender for the Either/Or running order.

02. Whatever (Folk Song in C) Apparently from the September 1994 sessions at Tony's. Features JJ Gonson's vintage Domino guitar that Elliott favored. Also known under the working title "Hanging Out With Me".

03. Big Decision From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Elliott's mix appeared on the CD compilation, A Slice of Lemon.

04. Placeholder From sessions for Either/Or. Sung so softly, but really beautiful.

05. New Disaster From sessions for Either/Or. Vocals and music are from different takes. Vocals are from the reel that provided From a Basement on the Hill with "Last Hour", but the tape reel flange scraping sound (which you can hear on "Last Hour") was even more distracting on this song. Music was from a later instrumental take, with organ and drums but no vocals. This is the only instance on this record where we combined takes in this manner.

06. Seen How Things Are Hard This song was actually recorded on a 4-track cassette. Mixed by Tom and Rob for possible inclusion of Either/Or. Also known under the working title, "Sleigh Bells".

07. Fear City From sessions for Either/Or. Also known as "See My City Dead". Check out the cool melodic organ part and Elliott's grooving drum style.

08. Either/Or From sessions for the album Either/Or. Apparently the song title was appropriated for the album title but not the song. There's also a version of this song with alternate lyrics called "No More".

09. Pretty Mary K (other version) From sessions for Either/Or. This is a completely different song than the Figure 8 track, but seems to feature different words with a parallel theme. An early version was worked up as "Everything's Okay" - note the similar phonetics.

10. Almost Over From sessions for Either/Or. Some of his fastest guitar picking in this collection.

11. See You Later

12. Half Right These are two Heatmiser songs from their third album, Mic City Sons, performed solo in this collection. From the Rob Jones' Locals Show sessions, "See You Later" was released on the Air Check cassette on Rob's label, Jealous Butcher.

Technical Note: Except for the special case of "New Disaster", where independent instrumental and vocal takes were combined, all songs are presented as tracked by Elliott, and every effort was made to check stereo placement, track levels, editing ideas, arrangement ideas and the overall feel that were present in his rough (or released) mixes. In many cases remixing was simply an attempt to make the elements of the song slightly more legible, and in other cases to reduce the background tape hiss. In no way is this album simply a product of the studio in 2006 - it is a collection of songs, any of which could have easily been included on his albums of 1995 or 1997.

Gone Too Soon.......2007-06-28

I love this collection. It's like two lost albums were found. Some of his most beautiful and haunting material. The world lost a brilliant songwriter when Elliott passed away. His death is as important to me as John Lennon's (if you knew me, you'd know that that means alot in my world); they both could have gone on to contribute so much more to the world. Maybe they're somewhere playing together right now. That would be cool.

I lived in Portland Oregon in the mid 1990's and some of my best memories are the Elliot Smith shows i saw in quaint local bars and clubs, up close and personal, just Elliot and his guitar. I always loved him with his band as well, but to me, the true artist in Elliot Smith always came shining through in his solo shows, when his fantastic songwriting was front and center.

If you are the kind of person who owns every Elliot Smith CD, and considers the Kill Rock Stars records to be his best, then New Moon is a must have. There is no need for me to go through track by track to describe the beauty of this album. The care that went into this release by the people who put it together deserves five stars in itself.

Listening to New Moon made me realize how great Elliot Smith was and how much i miss hearing him and seeing him create new music.

It totally astounded me. I had no expectations, but would not have been surprised if these tracks were left off Elliott's records because they were somehow sub-standard. They are not. Either/Or could have been a perfect double CD with the inclusion of these tracks. If you are an Elliott fan, you will be exstatic about these archival gems.

Musically, I don't think anyone has surpassed Elliott Smith in the past 20 years or more. Here is more proof of his genius. If the measure of a CD's greatness lies in how many times you can listen to it before you get tired of it, then this one will stand the test of time.

Honestly, I prefer Elliott's "Good Will Hunting"-era work, but this album is still worth the buy. As always it's haunting, atmospheric, and this one hits some raw, punk notes. Some songs are reminiscent of his earlier musical themes, but reworked. A needed addition to any Smith fan's collection.

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams

Relevant Over 30 Years Later.......2007-07-09

Incredibly, Dark Side Of The Moon, by Pink Floyd, was released almost 35 years ago. The amazing thing is that this excellent CD is still important and relevant today. I can listen to Us and Them over and over again. The hypnotic perfection of this CD is amazing. Most bands would love to have a collection of greatest hits that would rival this one album by this incredible band. If you have not heard this, you are in for a treat. A Five star masterpiece.

Dark Side Of The Moon Is Rock N' Roll's Definitive Masterwork.......2007-05-22

If you are looking for a happy album, this isn't the one. The title of the album should give you a clue as to the mood of the songs. The title could just as easily be "The Dark Side Of The Earth". The recording paints a sad picture of the human condition. It shows the physical and mental consequences when a person is constantly being pressured by the competitive, workaholic society. The person as depicted in the album realizes that the inevitability of old age and mortality are rapidly approaching him as he recognizes that such a lifestyle is futile in the long run. In "Breathe", he is immediately told by society, most likely his parents, while he is very young that he must work hard and never take a break or a vacation in order that he may achieve great success in the world and get rich. The lure of the dollar is a powerful thing and many people, like the person depicted in Pink Floyd's masterpiece, worship it. The stress really builds up in "On The Run". He is constantly being bombarded by all the demands that society places upon him. "I got to perform. I got to catch that plane. I got to get to that meeting on time." He is constantly on the move, never resting or taking time to enjoy all of life's pleasures. He says," I will work until I die. I'll sleep when I'm dead. Retirement is for sissies." In "Time", he reviews his life so far and realizes it was all for nothing. He is left to confront old age and his own mortality and realizes lost opportunities. He could've spent more time with his family or friends. He could've gone to church and learned about God and spirituality. He "runs and runs to catch up with the sun" and has a physical and mental breakdown. Death eventually comes to him in "The Great Gig In The Sky". On his deathbed, he says, "And I am not afraid of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be afraid of dying? There's no reason for it. You got to go sometime." "Money" confronts the evils of capitalism in all its ugliness. The song says that the rich and famous are human too and they must also confront the harsh realities of life sooner or later, whether it is the death of a loved one or their own deaths. "Us And Them" looks at the futility of war and competition and says that we are all ordinary men and women and we must all get along and work together for peace because human life is short and fragile. "Brain Damage" shows how normal men and women can sometimes lose their peace of mind and even their sanity when confronted by all the demands of society. "Eclipse" summarizes the futility of working so hard to amass the most wealth because sooner or later everything "under the sun" will disappear and all that will be left is complete darkness. "And everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon." The "eclipse" is one's own death. This album should be listened to by all the so-called "Type A" people or workaholics who are constantly chasing after success and material gain. A great rock masterpiece that should be listened to again and again.

EXCELLENT: BUT THE BEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED ?.......2007-05-19

I know most all of you Pink Floyd fans are going to disagree with me, and nothing I say will ever change your mind about it, but it is now 2007 and this album just does not have any content that would qualify it as the best album ever recorded. Yes, back in early 1973 when this album was released it was groundbreaking and fantastic, which is exactly why it was number one for so long. It was definitely as they say, 'in the right place at the right time'. But it is now almost 35 years later, and while the album does stand the test of time, it is certainly not the best album ever recorded. Sure the album is ambient and brilliant, but you still must truthfully ask yourself two questions:
1) Lyrically is this the best album ever written?
I think not; and can you really disagree with me? You can't honestly believe that there's not been a single artist in 35 years that's penned a better album. Think about it, lyrically there is nothing that is absolutely extraordinary about this album. You must know that since 1973 there are many artists that have presented far better lyrical content in their recordings.
2) Musically is this the best album ever written?
Again the music is excellent, but it is in fact the mood and the sonic soundscape this album creates that has given it its timeless appeal. Well, I know that technicality was not the point of this album, but from the standpoint of technicality, and even musicianship, in 2007 this album contains nothing that has not been greatly surpassed. This is not arguable. Furthermore, since many contend that this is the best album ever recorded, this begs the logical question: are any of the members of Pink Floyd considered to be the best or one of the best in the world on their given instrument? The answer to that question is quite simply: no. I don't like to sound so critical because I too like Pink Floyd and this album, but all of this gushing praise and superlative language use does warrant that someone with conviction submit a differing perspective.
Now, I can certainly understand why many people say this is the best album ever recorded, in most cases this will be because you were there in the era when the album was released, it took you on a musical journey to a place you've never been before, and it holds a special place in your heart. But just ask anyone of a generation prior to yours what the best album ever recorded is and they will almost certainly give you answers you don't agree with, and nothing you say will ever change their minds about it, even though you know their answer is entirely generation related. However, with all of that being said, being born in the 60's I too was there in the era when this album was released, but I just cannot yield to popular opinion or agree with the unquestioning masses that this is the best album ever recorded, when it quite simply is not. This is my honest opinion, and whether you agree or do in fact disagree with me don't be a sheep let popular opinion tell you what you should and shouldn't listen to, or what the best album ever is.

These songs and david's vocals were amazingly good mostly this is the kind of material music I use for a nice buzz after drinking some jack daniels when i'm in that mood to get wasted after a frustrating day at work. The only thing I have a problem with is the long intros before the songs start like the clocks and the baby crying they take too long and I don't mind the intros they were pretty good too but not that long but still this is a very good album and pinkfloyd rocks forever.

I have tried to purchase every possible version of this cd paid hundreds of dollars for the so call 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th press...only to be disappointed by all of them.LET ME PUT AN END TO ALL THE SPECULATION AND CONFUSSION...THIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY ULTIMATE IN SOUND QUALITY PERIOD.The only catch is that you must have a SUPER AUDIO MULTICHANNEL SURROUND SYSTEM....the sound quality will leave you speachless.

Why is this a classic?.......2007-06-05

Disclaimer: If rock, country, and [c]rap disappeared from the planet tomorrow, I would the happiest man on earth. There would be some loss, but I would be willing to sacrifice it for the general uplift in musical taste. Having said that, I do occasionally find something I like in the pop vein (Steve Winwood, for example), but I have yet to find anything that I love because I've never uncovered anything of musical substance. This mix of Dark Side of the Moon sure ain't it. Having recently purchased an SACD player, I thought I would revisit this so-called classic. If nothing else, I could play it for friends.

Thirty years ago, you couldn't walk into a hi-fi store without hearing "thump-thump, thump-thump," followed by two hundred clocks having simultaneous orgasmic releases. All that remains on this recording, but the simple, over-electronicized music still does nothing to move me. The sound effects are almost as annoying as those fuzzed, distorted, god-awful guitars that several generations have amazingly accepted as THE sound and will be able to point to in old age as the source of their deafness.

I'm sure just about everyone will disagree with the above opinions, but you cannot disagree with what follows. The mix on this recording is dreadful. Like virtually all pop recordings, the engineer forgot that rock is VOCAL music and thus typically made the vocal lines so recessed within a wall of sound as to render lyrics unintelligible. It's as if the band were playing in your ears but the singers are 30 feet away. Why this is standard practice in the pop field, I cannot imagine. I also don't much like sitting in the middle of the band and wished the instruments were all placed up front. Moreover, the sound is harsh and overbearing, and that is likely the fault of the mixing engineer, not the source material. While I have found in playing SACDs that I want to turn the volume up (including electronic jazz), in this case I dived to turn it down.

The Dark Side of the Moon will go onto my shelf and remain there until someone begs me to play it.

P.S. There is a reason that Amazon sells some versions for $150 and this one so cheaply.

Sam Endicott will probably never be taken seriously. Not after fronting a band called Skabba the Hut. Not after switching ridiculous dreadlocks for an even more ridiculous faux-hawk. And certainly not after taking a feud with the Killers' Brandon Flowers seriously. It's too bad because Endicott's band the Bravery has made a second album that is worth taking seriously. On The Sun and the Moon, the New York five-piece trades in the faux British accents and Duran Duran synthesizer flares of its self-titled 2005 debut for something a little more real. Bursting to life with sweeping, opulently textured songs like "This Is Not the End" and "Time Won't Let Me Go," it's a warmer and statelier set that seems somehow more dignified. Give or take a few stray lyrics, it could easily pass for the work of a band that has unexpectedly stumbled on credibility. --Aidin Vaziri

With The Bravery's debut album being a very admirable part of the regrettably brief new wave resurgence movement in music alongside such similar artists as The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and Editors, I hoped that their second release would sound fairly similar to their self-titled release, which is one of my all-time favorite albums. I'm all for bands going in new directions, but unfortunately The Bravery seems to have moved in a direction that is more or less a bland alternative style, and comes short of the appeal of their prior upbeat 80's-ish style. Only two or three tracks maintain the style of the self-titled debut, and conveniently they are some of the album's better songs. I liked approximately six tracks including the intro; among them are "Believe", "This Is Not the End", "Tragedy Bound", and "The Ocean". I did not intensely enjoy too many of my favorites on this album however, unlike I have enjoyed past songs "Rites of Spring", "An Honest Mistake", and "Tyrant". Basically the band sounds like a blend of newer Arctic Monkeys with newer Kaiser Chiefs, except with an electronic touch on occasion. Although I am a fan of both those bands, I dislike The Bravery's take on the style used on The Sun and the Moon, and really was fairly unimpressed with the lyrics as well. Still, the album has a fair amount of good melodies on it, and while I didn't enjoy enough of them to justify a purchase, I'd still give this CD three stars since it was if nothing else a mildly decent effort.

Setting the record straight!.......2007-07-03

I almost didn't buy this CD because of the reviews here on Amazon. What a mistake that would have been!!! This one is very similar to the first one, but even more interesting because it is more varied. I LOVED their debut album - it's one of the only CDs I have (out of hundreds!) that I can listen to over and over without getting sick of it. The Sun and the Moon has the same infectious beats, but isn't QUITE as peppy as the first one with respect to the lyrics. Its depth makes it very interesting to listen to, and I have a feeling I'll like it even more as I listen to it again and again. If you're on the fence about this one, give it a chance!!!

Better than others will lead you to believe........2007-06-22

Most of my favorite bands that have put out new albums in the last year or so seem to have changed their sound for the worst ie Linkin Park, Incubus, Evanescence, 311 etc. So when I read the reviews on here about the Bravery changing their sound as well I figured as much and was apprehensive to buy the new cd. However, the change is slight and still sounds like The Bravery. There are still several songs with the electronica sound and those that aren't make up for it with clever lyrics and a distinct Bravery-esk sound. If you enjoyed their first cd, this one is a must buy.

The 1st album was a foray into the current trend of what was happening at the time ala The Strokes. This new effort shows a more mature effort on the part of Sam. It's a good follow up to the debut and shows they are not a one trick pony. Does it falter from being a New Wave album this time? Sure but is it really THAT much of a deviation from the 1st album in regard to the 1st album? No. If anything it's better. Lyrically it's a 1000 times better then the 1st album. Melody wise I think the riffs are more precise and focused. The vocals have also been richly produced by Brendan. All in all this is a solid follow up to the debut. Good show.

Everything I Have Someday Will Fall Apart And Fade Away........2007-06-16

I disagree with other reviewers here--"The Sun And The Moon" is very much a continuation of The Bravery's first album. Sure, it has less synth, but it still retains that new wave/punk vibe of the late 1970's/early 1980's. Check out the Clash-like "London Calling" riff on "This Is Not The End".

That said, "The Sun And The Moon" is about the same as their last album. It has 7 good songs and some filler. In this case, "Believe", "This Is Not The End", "Every Word Is A Knife In My Ear", "Bad Sun", "Time Won't Let Me Go" and "Tragedy Bound" are the solid tracks whilst the five tracks that end the album are repetitious. I don't mind though, because I'd buy a third album from this band because they continue to show potential. I don't think they've figured out how to make every song count yet, but lyrically, "The Sun And The Moon" is more interesting than their debut. Take the lyrics on "Believe", "Time Won't Let Me Go" and "Tragedy Bound". I like the doom and gloom, the mild nihilism, the gray outlook--that's what made earlier punk and new wave stand apart from the sappy top 40.

I'd also recommend The Killers, Keane, Interpol, The Postal Service, Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor for other newer, similar sounding artists. If you want a history lesson, The Clash, Duran Duran, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Cars, Blondie, U2, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Eurythmics, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, OMD, Kraftwerk, The Psychedelic Furs, Roxy Music should broaden your mind (and ears).

Platinum-selling recording artist Deborah Cox reinterprets the classic songs of Dinah Washington on her Decca debut, Destination Moon. Destination Moon thrusts the R&B/dance diva into whole new territory, showcasing her range and scope as an artist capable of tackling jazz, blues and "big-band" with ease and confidence. Deborah Cox's first exposure to Washington came very early, when she was a little girl. "I first became aware of Dinah when I was growing up, when I was about 8 or 9 years old" she says. "A lot of jazz was played about the house. I heard my mother playing a 45 of "This Bitter Earth" -- this first song I had ever heard from Dinah. It was the richness and the tonality of her voice that I gravitated to." For the arrangements and the production, Deborah turned to the highly-versatile New York-based music man Rob Mounsey, whose credits with such diverse performers include Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett to name a few. The record was made live in the studio, with 40 musicians in the same room with her, playing and singing in real time under Mounsey's direction. "I'm doing this to broaden people's awareness of what I can do and also for the sheer love of her music." As a result, Deborah's homage to Dinah Washington does not lean overwhelmingly toward one particular style. It was designed from the beginning to be a compendium of several of Dinah's idioms - the big-band swing of "All Of Me" and "Destination Moon," swaggering R&B ("I Don't Hurt Anymore)," the blues that earned her the misleading nickname "Queen of the Blues" ("Misery," "New Blowtop Blues"), the lush ballads that put her on the jukeboxes of Middle America ("What A Diff'rence A Day Made," "This Bitter Earth").

From her self-titled debut, to One Wish, to The Morning After to Destination Moon, Deborah's albums are like mini-greatest hits compilations, and Deborah scores again with her interpretations of Dinah Washington's songs on Destination Moon. Deborah has the best voice in contemporary music today, and this album continuously showcases her incredible range and talent. Personal favorites will include the title track, "Misery", and "This Bitter Earth". The album's best songs are "What a Difference a Day Makes" and the closing "Look to the Rainbow". Flawless from start to finish, Deborah again creates a masterpiece.

Deborah takes the less is more approach with her first collection of standards. With a restraint that gives the arrangements plenty of room to breathe, she croons beautifully, showing us different facets of her vocal personality.
While her hits have generally called on her to be very angry or very sad, these classic songs allow her to be at turns gentle, sassy, reflective, happy and wry. The productions and arrangements are reminiscent of the golden era of era of Billie, Sarah, Dinah and others, but contain enough surprises to keep them from sounding old-fashioned.
Deborah - who shifted from pop siren to Broadway star with Aida, further expands her range to include jazz, blues and big band. Cox and her backing musicians were recorded live in the studio, playing and singing in real time. The effect pays off as Cox accurately renders each song with her own textures.
No one expects Cox to abandon the dance-floor (she just released a new dance track with Tony Moran), but her latest offering "Destination Moon" allows her to explore another musical landscape with glowing results.
Deborah takes the jazz route on "Destination Moon", a tribute to one of her all-time heroines, Dinah (The Queen) Washington. "Baby, You've Got What It Takes" comes at us as a fast shuffle. Cox fills "This Bitter Earth" with Washington tics - the up-speak at the end of phrases, the self-satisfied "mmh-hmmm" after a line. Washington first made her name as a blues singer, and Cox lays the blues on in "Misery" and "New Blowtop Blues", that classic mean-woman lament where she sings of her run-in with a jealous ".45-packin' mama."
On "Destination Moon", focusing on Washington, the jazz singer, dishing out several of the standards most closely associated with her career, Deborah also wraps her powerful pipes around gems like "I Don't Hurt Anymore", "September in the Rain" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Producer/arranger Rob Mounsey pulled out all the stops for these sessions, surrounding Cox with a 40-piece orchestra that laid down a gorgeous foundation for her to build on. And she did just that.
In an interview conducted to promote her new album, , Cox said she recorded this record for two reasons -- to pay tribute to an artist who had so inspired her and to show that she, like Washington, was capable of doing a lot more musically than some people might have expected.
She succeeded on both counts. It's very nice work.

This CD is Amazing!!! Deborah Cox vocals are outstanding! I was very surprised to hear that she had a new CD release. They should be promoting this album like crazy. At first i heard that this was a throwback album so i wasn't sure how to take this but i went and purchased it anyway and i'm amazed at her depth of talent. Her Phrasing is just perfect and the live instrument just add to the excitement of the music. I would have to say that this is the top album released this year as a tribute.
Also check out Amel Larrieux new CD its the same kind of music. I love it!

Amazing departure from the beautiful Deborah Cox.......2007-06-20

When most people think of Deborah Cox, they immediately think of the diva of club anthems (Absolutely Not, Nobody's Supposed To Be Here, Something Happened On The Way To Heaven)--the woman with a voice that makes you want to dance all night long. When I first learned of Destination Moon, I had my reservations. Then, once I'd heard some track clips that were posted on her official website, I knew I was going to love this cd. Sure enough, Deborah Cox breathes new life into the songs (some classics, some not) of the legendary Dinah Washington. Her voice is so pure and rich, the songs so soothing--I imagine (or, rather, would like to think) that her (Ms. Cox) legions of younger fans will look deeper into the discography of the great Ms. Washington, and discover for themselves an entirely different style of music which was--and still is--jazz at its best.

Kudos to the incredible Deborah Cox. This cd has found a permanent place in my ipod. (Favourite tracks include the title track, Destination Moon, and the hauntingly beautiful Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.)

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

A diverse album to give you a sprinkle of the various types of 'opera'. Every note is pure and lovely, I listen to it all the time ! Highly recommended for anyone just getting into opera. :}

French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. --Mike McGonigal

Serene chill-out music with warmth...and grooves.......2007-06-01

Some years ago I saw a hypnotic video on a music show [perhaps Rage, on ABC TV Australia]. The video is hypnotic because it featured a story about two girls, sisters perhaps, who grew up playing various tennis like games. The music and video combined was enchanting so I made a point of one day buying the song or album. Well, I got around to doing so within the last year.

The music on this album features a mellow female singer in most songs, or, for one song, a heavily accented French man singing English lyrics. The album combines English and French lyrics. The synthesiser is dominant on this album, though you do hear keyboards, pianos, bass, violins, trumpets and tambourines, I think.

A few of the tracks are instrumentals, but the standout tracks for mine are the poppy songs "Sexy boy" and "Kelly watch the stars"...the latter being the hypnotic song I mentioned earlier. In tracks like these you get a heavy bass sound from the keyboard and a groove perhaps like you get in the band Daft Punk [I'm not that familiar with Daft Punk, but to me there seems to be a similarity of sound with Air on occasion].

"Sexy boy" is probably my favourite track on this album. The title is spoken repetitively in this song by a honey voiced French female. Other lyrics are used, but it pretty much has vocal riff of "sexy boy".

As for "Kelly watch the stars" this is a song which reminds me, in a way, of Metallica's "One". By that I mean the song's strenghts are magnified with the aid of a video, but, by themselves, are weaker without the video. This song does have its strengths though, despite having the title as the only lyrics of the song and repeated frequently. One of those strenghts is, again, the female vocalist's tone of voice.

The track with the sole male voice appearing is "Remember" and this song is notable in that it samples the synth beat of my favourite Beach Boys song "Do it again". Any song with such a beat/rhythym can't be all that bad...all the heavily accented voice isn't as seductive to this male as the female voices.

Many tracks have a spacey feeling to them, and a couple, at least, even have sound effects reminescent of the kind of sound effects you hear for UFOs in those science fiction movies of a few decades ago.

Track #7 on this album features a sythesiser effect which sounds to me like the wind blowing sand in a desert. If you like that part of the track, then check out Jean Michael-Jarre's album "Oxygene" which has longer passages in this vein.

Track #1 features some ambient noise or synthesiser effects mimicking a running stream with some forest sounds, like crickets or what have you.

In closing this album mixes up tracks with a spacey feel, to bass heavy rhythyms which sound cool and are overlayed with keyboard tinkling at the higher end of a keyboard.

It was Okay..........2007-05-14

This CD was a little less than I was expecting from it. Only liked about 3 tracks on it, and only one of those blew my socks off. I probably would not buy it again if I could go back.

This is the ultimate cruising CD. I love it and when I put it into my car it stays playing on repeat for at least 2 months at a time.

coming from a rock viewpoint, this music is garbage. I see all the other bad reviews and they're getting very low percentage for how helpful they are, and I can't help but think that all those votes are from Air-affiliated entities. As one other reviewer stated, all the songs are repetitive and boring. Some of the songs use the same exact notes throughout the entire song. In my opinion, a lot of today's pop has much more musical talent than this album.

An excellent introduction to chillout.......2006-12-30

When I bought this CD three years ago, I was astounded by the slowness and smoothness of the tracks - I hadn't heard anything like it before. These days, after becoming familiar with the likes of Zero 7 and Massive Attack (trip-hop), the vocals on Moon Safari detract from my enjoyment of the CD overall.

Still, "La Femme D'Argent" and "Le Voyage De Penelope" are among my favorite tracks of any genre, and "You Make It Easy" is a great romantic song. On the whole, I'm very glad I own this CD and although it's not for everyone, I recommend it to those of you looking to discover new genres or expand your collection of chillout music.

Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

With their interstellar (really!) lyrics and angular song structures, Modest Mouse tend to defy their self-deprecating band name. Isaac Brock opens Moon with meditations on the universe's shape--all twisted into such a solipsistic tangle that they illuminate immediately how much these songs are about the mind as about the world. Rarely giving off the cage-jarring thickness of guitar rock, Moon's 15 tunes are shaped around vignettes of a disheveled head figuring out the rambling disconnections of postmodern society. Guitars wobble, Brock wails on vocals, and his band mates--Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green--help take each song away from any predictable formula and toward wherever they seem to want to go. This is a band as profoundly touched by suburbia as was writer Harold Brodkey. You can imagine Brock, Green, and Judy lying on wide-open lawns, philosophizing about the shape of the universe and coming up with lyric moments like this (sung to folky, spare acoustic guitar): "A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard and as my own dog ran away I didn't say much of anything at all / A wild pack of family dogs came running through the yard as my little sister played; the dogs took her away, and I guess she was eaten up, okay." If you think you'd be interested in listening to this band, buy this album first. Think of it as their version of the Beatles' "White Album". Or Metallica's "Black Album". Or Weezer's "Blue Album". Or Primus' "Brown Album". Okay, that one sucked. Regardless, there is not a bad track on this album.

From the moment Brock tells you what his only art is until you find out what people are made of, you will be floored. The album captures all of the charm and personality that their Up albums had. But the production, the musicianship, the songwriting, the lyrics, everything, absolutely every thing is on the next level.

This CD is better than their 'Good News' album. This one had next to no "hits" on it, and I liked more songs on this album than their other two I own! If you like odd-ball rockers and strangely hypnotic yelling and guitars, buy this album!

I remember the first time I heard Modest Mouse. I was moved by Isaac Brock's sense of timing and lyrical punches. I thought that nothing could ever top The Lonesome Crowded West (and to me still nothing has), but this record came pretty damn close. From the opening note on the first track, 3rd Planet, I could feel my my heart slowly begin to drift away...right into the sea of Brock's haunting voice. And every track takes you somewhere new until you realize that you're eventually not even on this planet anymore. I absolutely love this record, for personal reasons and because they truely do raise the bar with every record they produce. If you're a fan of Good News, you owe it to yourself to hear the roots of this amazing band

The dark center of the universe is easily the best song ever written, easily. The music, the emotion, and the lyrics are pure perfection. Read the lyrics while listening to the song and you will realize what I am talking about. It is poetry, so I won't tell you what it all means, but if you listen to it enough it will hit you. If you can't see the thin air then why the hell should you care?

A great release from a the legendary RITM!.......2007-07-13

I think this is a *fanstatic* release, mostly because of the DVD content, but I like the CD a lot as well. Being the fan that I am, I couldn't give this any less than 5 stars for that DVD content being what it is. Yes, there is some dated stuff on the album, but it is called "Decade", and the song "Deeper" alone justifies that title. I see some of the other reviewers who are fans, but giving it low-star reviews, that's really too bad. It may be because they were expecting a full new CD of all new material, and didn't get that. Still, I see that those of us who "know the deal", so to speak, know that the essence of Rabbit In The Moon is the live show, I think the DVD content gives a pretty close approximation to what it's actually like to see them live. But tell me, who, of the RITM fans among us, especially those who have seen them live in the least year, didn't FLIP out when they were listening to the "Decade" CD and heard the phrase "Look into the eye!" for the first time, on track 8.. with memories flooding in of Bunny with his TV-on-a-stick?? I know I did. And that song is followed by the AMAZING rendition of David Bowie's "Let's Dance", followed by Deeper (which is admittedly old
but is a classic and couldn't be excluded) but then there's a brand new mix of O.B.E. that, correct me if I'm wrong, has never been released before. (And I own the original Phases O.B.E. 12" record). I love the new mix of that song, and I think it's a great album, even though every single song doesn't thrill me. But even with this CD, some of the older RITM songs that I never really liked much before, like Dubbasex for example, listened carefully and given them another chance, and found they are actually very subtle and beautiful songs.

There is more newer material on the album than some reviewers let on, in fact well over half of it is new. There are a few ommissions, IMO, for example I would have liked to see "Electro Accupuncture" on this CD, but then again that has been released before on a CD, still I think it would have fit in well here though as well. I love the DVD the most, because it reminds me why I've been such a huge fan for so many years, with probably about 7 shows under my belt. To all the fans out there, buy this album! Show your support! Remember the old Zen Festial 96-97 shows, with Bunny, in his disco-ball suit, being lowered by a cable from the ceiling! remember how you felt at those times. They have earned our suport! To those folks new to the electronica genre, this is a good glimpse into understanding the engima that is Rabbit in the Moon... RITM so much more than can possible be described in one album, album review, DVD, magazine article, or antyhing else. There's a whole history and culture behind these guys'one-of-a-kind stlye of performance art, and I think this release captures the essence of it almost as best you could with the amount of material provided. Buy it for the DVD, but then take the audio CD, put in in your car stereo, put on track 8, and crank it up!

Great yet lacking.......2007-07-12

So, if your a rabbit head like me, you've probably heard most of these tracks at their shows. So why is this CD a great purchase? Quite simply because you are a rabbit head and they need our support. If you're new to Rabbit in the Moon then you need to hear what the music is about. The really cool feature is that in the DVD each suit comes with an explanation which will help new listeners/show goers to understand the meaning of the show as a whole and the suits individually. Are there tracks missing? Absolutely. The now famous jungle track used for the dragon slaying sequence is missing, so is the old light suit track which is a favorite amongst show goers. However, the single most significant fact about this release is the release it self. If this goes good, we will see a new Rabbit in the Moon CD sometime soon. Remember, this is their first attempt at this, so lets support them. After all, they have been connecting to us for over a decade, the least we can do is buy the CD.

Yes, many of the tracks have been previously released. Yes, much of the album sounds like a product of the 90s. Should that be a problem if the music is good?

I am pleased to witness this finally see the light of day. The music sounds great with a pair of headphones, and the DVD only makes it better.

15 years later, they deliver... but no surprises.......2007-07-11

I've been listening to Rabbit in the Moon for 13 years... heck, the first time I ever rolled was at a RITM show in 1994. I love these guys. Now, this album is solid, but not ground-breaking. It's not really phoned in, but then it's not really innovative either. That's partially because these are almost all old tracks. I think there's actually only one track on the entire album that wasn't previously released. Some of these date back, literally, a decade. In fact, "Out of Body Experience" was released in '93, so they could have called it "Decade and a Half". Anyways, the new track is pretty cool, a cover of David Bowie's "Let's Dance". For longtime fans though, it's really about the DVD. The footage is great, including some from a protest rally at the WTO in the Czech Republic. So even though the album doesn't have much new to offer old fans, it's still worth picking up. For interested newbies, it's a must-buy. It's put together very well, with appropriate mixes of each track chosen. It nearly brought a tear to my eye finally hearing all these tracks in album format. I think that alot of "long-time" fans will be highly disappointed because they've never heard these tracks sitting at home, sober. Yes, obviously, ANYTHING will sound better when you're high, on a gigantic soundsystem. Go pick up some decent headphones, find some good visuals, and let RITM carry you away into your own out of body experience.

RECYCLED DECADE.......2007-07-11

I hate this because I am a great fan . . . but I have to admit that these guys haven't really done much lately.
Their shows are AMAZING! The stuff of legend, but they seem to have not had much commitment to new
studio projects asides from the occasional remix. This is all stuff that has been recycled from the past decade.
It really is a shame because the talent is there, I wish I didn't have to say this, but, I call as I see it.
