Even the high-and-mighty Gallagher brothers would admit that Oasis hasn't released a crucial album since the one-two punch of its 1994 debut, Definitely Maybe, and its globe-devouring 1995 follow-up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. But that doesn't mean the hirsute Manchester band has been in short supply of great singles. With just Liam and Noel sticking it out through the whole thing, this generous double album cherry-picks the best riffs, choruses, and sneers from the group's decade-plus career, offering fans a chance to rediscover early pub classics ("Slide Away," "Some Might Say"), latter-day retro-rock gems ("The Importance of Being Idle," "Lyla"), and some surprisingly decent B-sides that could have otherwise easily been obscured by the eyebrows ("The Masterplan"). --Aidin Vaziri

Oasis have been at the helm of the world's music scene for over ten years. To mark that achievement, this first-ever Oasis retrospective draws together the years of multiplatinum albums, No. 1 singles, and--unique to Oasis--instantly familiar B-sides into one 18-track double album, entitled Stop the Clocks. Furthermore, this collection has been chosen by the band themselves--selecting the songs they believe encapsulate their remarkable career to date.

UK band.......2007-05-26
Noel Gallagher said that they would never release these greatest hits, but here it is. Much like their peers, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, Suede, and Verve, Oasis has all released greatest hits CDs after ten years. Britpop is now a decade old. It is still popular, and very few bands, other than Arctic Monkeys, and Libertines, have come and replaced them with something better or equal. Oasis' recent tour featured most of the songs from this collection, plus a few more from the new Don't Believe The Truth. These songs have soaked into the British sensibility like no other recent UK band. Of course we have "Live Forever" and "Supersonic" from the first album. There are "Wonderwall" from the second. But there is not so much from after Be Here Now. Half of the album is from the first two albums. The other half is early b-sides, and one or two tracks, from the rest. It's kid of an odd collection. Most of the Oasis fans have all these tracks on the previous releases. Some of the other Britpop bands offered some new tracks or unreleased material. Placebo had a DVD included. I guess Oasis is saying to all future generation: "Here is the classics, if you want to look into it further, check out the other albums." Great cover by Peter Blake. One Liam song is included.
If yer at all into Oasis..........2007-02-04
...then chances are you've listened to these songs at least a million flippin' times! This is not a "compilation" for "fans", but a snapshot to be placed inside a time capsule as a treat for tomorrow's "would be" Oasis listeners.
Over seven years ago, after disappointment after disappointment with SOTSOG, HC and...dang, I can't even remember the name of the album that followed that (btw, as with many other "true" Oasis fans, BHN is still my favorite Oasis album, top to top, and also signifies the end of Oasis as "Oasis", the headstone of the mayhem), I still managed to listen to the boys a bit here and there and compiled my own bootleg album of Oasis "anthems", including a nice middle set of classic Noel acoustics (a staple for anyone who's ever seen the Brothers live). So, here goes:
1. Listen Up (extended version)
2. Rockin' Chair (a bit "Beatle-esque, but much more raw than Lennon-McCartney could ever be)
3. Wonderwall (of course)
4. Sunday Morning Call (after the first listen of this song I had to play it again back-to-back, as if for proof of its existence. I just couldn't believe how beautiful it was.)
5. Little By Little (again, of course)
6. Talk Tonight (thus begins Noel's acoustic)
7. Half the World Away (Paul Weller's fav)
8. Angel Child (demo...don't ask)
9. Heroes (better than even Bowie himself)
10. Magic Pie (alone worth the purchase of BHN)
11. Don't Look Back In Anger (once heard this song sung by a drunken wedding party in backwoods Ireland. Priceless!)
12. Live Forever (..."Er, that's if you want to." - Liam, live, Cigarettes and Alcohol single)
13. Whatever (classic Noel rip-off, but still the best single never released in the US)
14. Married with Children (how is it nobody ever talks about this song? A classic cook-kitchen end-of-the-night work song!)
So there you have it. My very own Oasis "compilation". Savvy?
The Most Important Band Of The Last 30 Years.......2007-01-18
I became an Oasis fan on the first listen of a "white label demo" of a song called Columbia in 1994. I didn't know then that this band would be the most influencial, important band of my lifetime. Growing up with Nirvana and the grunge scene in America brought me to be greatly effected by the sudden impact of the self-assured "Get Up Off The Floor And Believe In Life" idea of Oasis. American's didn't find out about Oasis until their second album, and their only exposure was the Wonderwall & Champagne Supernova videos where Liam Gallagher wore round "Lennon" sunglasses. With this, America missed the entire life-changing charisma of Definitely Maybe and the masterpieces found throughout the rest of every album and every single with b-sides to follow.
Anyone who says they dislike Oasis is only familiar with Wonderwall & Champagne Supernova and say they dislike the "attitudes". Nevermind that Oasis single-handedly changed the way an entire generation of listeners approached their own lives by writing astonishing songs that made you feel invincible. Forget "Rape Me" or "I Hate Myself & I Want To Die", Oasis are about making the most out of life and not wasting a single second. It's there in the lyrics, in the Marshall Stacks & Les Pauls, and in the melodys that will never grow tired.
I'd rate this album a 10 out of 10 were in not for one glaring ommision... not a single song from the 3rd album, Be Here Now. Noel Gallagher has become ashamed of this album over time due to the reviews recieved upon release as an overblown record with too many long songs. Well, having been there from the beginning, I'd say Be Here Now is my favorite Oasis record, primarily due to the fact that it's the sound of the summer of 1997. Big and exciting, and almost constantly rocking, Be Here Now warranted at least 1 track on Stop The Clocks and it could have featured 3 or 4. Don't Go Away is to me the single most beautiful Oasis song and should have been among the first 3 or 4 Noel chose for Stop The Clocks. Meanwhile, D'You Know What I Mean? is the single most exhilirating Oasis song ever released and would have added to the track listing as the most interesting and self assured track on Stop The Clocks. With 9 songs on each disk, the inclusion of these two tracks would have made it my dream Oasis "Best Of" rounding it out at 10 tracks per disk and making for a more complete Oasis overview. Other than that, it's still a fantastic document of the most important rock & roll band of the last 30 years.
Legendary Oasis.......2007-01-16
This album just shows what an unbelievable songwriter Noel Gallagher was, is and always will be. There are just too many amazing oasis tracks to put on one cd but these are definitely some of the best. For me, probably the best band ever. I like donuts
Gallagher's words say it all.......2007-01-15
This is a compilation of the career of Oasis thus far, eh? How can the career and history of Oasis be summed up? It makes sense to go right to the band's source, Noel Gallagher. Here are some of his quotes. Read 'em first if you are thinking of buying this CD:
"With every song that I write, I compare it to the Beatles. I didn't start writing songs until I was about fourteen, so I just used to copy theirs."
"We're the best band on the planet. That's not arrogance, that's just a fact."
"All I ever wanted to do was make a record. Here's what you do: you pick up your guitar, you rip a few people's tunes off, you swap them round a bit, get your brother in the band, punch his head in every now and again, and it sells."
Noel's brother Liam was asked about Oasis in general, and he had this to say:
"We are bigger than Jesus. We will be as big as the Beatles, if not bigger."
They are behind the material on this album (sometimes referred to as a greatest hits CD). Think about it.
We can at least know that Liam's claim rings false. Oasis (mercifully) is not bigger than Jesus. As for the Beatles, this CD was put out on the same day (to rival, maybe???) the new Beatles "Love" CD. Let's look at the Amazon Sales Rank. As of today, Beatles "Love" is #3 on Amazon's top 10 Music list. "Stop the Clocks" is at #3,715. Music fans have made their choice.
Save your money! Or better yet, spend it on good, original British music. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull...the list goes on.

Aptly Titled- Not for delicate ears!.......2007-05-10
Bucket-Boy truly approached composing the soundtrack for Hades with this one. Chaotic, brutal, dissonant, punishing, dark, and frenetic, are just a few of the many possible adjectives to describe this work. I truly admire his guitar heroics on the CD, but I like a bit more variety and dynamics. This album at times becomes a blur of brutality and viciousness. There are amazing licks and solos, however, so that's why I give it at least 3 stars. He really has a gift for melody and groove, and that gift is put on the shelf for this hellride. I don't recommend it for other than the hardest core of Buckethead fans or horror flick fanatics. Use with caution.
'Hell on the Guitar!'.......2007-04-29
This is a masterful romp into a charnel house of shreds and shards of psycho-fret work. It may get tedious for some but I never seem to get tired of it. Buckethead is the man! Those gruesome song titles really match his guitar playing. I had the honor of seeing Buckethead perform at the Coach House here is California, if he comes your way you must see him,
he's just beyond words...
Great CD And Very Different.......2007-03-22
I just recently started listening to Buckethead and this is the first CD I bought. It's all instrumental funk metal and strange but good. It's hard to describe but worth buying.
Great but too hard for me.......2007-02-07
I think is a great album being that i am a fan of mostly all of what i know of Bucket, but i think if he toned it down a bit in maybe one or two songs, it might have been a lot better. I still love it just the same, but sometimes i put it on and i'd rather listen to a different album than that. recommended for true shredder and heavy metal fans
Definately Awesome.......2006-06-30
With this CD, Buckethead just passed go, collected $200 and blew me away. The whole thing never slows down, it's a constant stream of metal insanity designed to warp your brain, and it rocks. A definate buckethead essential, order it today :D

CD is quite good but you don't like DVD very much........2007-05-14
Best CD is always 'not bad'.
But I don't like this DVD. not enough.
All wrong.......2007-02-05
I'm an Oasis fan. Have been since "Defnitely Maybe." But with "Stop the Clocks," Noel Gallagher managed to make just about every mistake an artist can make with a greatest hits collection. First, if you have a single that was never put on any album, those songs are automatic. There should be no question of exclusion, the song "Whatever" should be on this album. That's why you put out a greatest hits collection; that's why fans look forward to them, to get those songs; this is a collosal oversight. Second, don't leave an entire album unrepresented, especially not when you've taken most of your tracks from two albums. Certainly don't do either of those two when you have 70 minutes of unused disc space, which brings me to: Third, don't put out a two disc set and use little more than one disc's worth of space. Fourth, put a little work in on it. There's no reason the "Swamp Song" couldn't have been mixed out of the beginning of "Champagne Supernova," other than unwillingness to do it. I know how to use Pro Tools; give me the tapes, I could have done it in ten minutes.
I'm not sure who this collection is supposed to appeal to. As a longtime fan who has all the albums, this is sorely lacking. For a casual fan, there's a lot missing. They missed up big on this one.
Great compilation.......2007-01-11
I am a huge Oasis fan, and have all these songs on other CD's, however it is great to hear them grouped in a way chosen by the artist. I am also a sucker for DVD extras etc. and this dvd is perfect.
Great producto for Oasis fans.......2007-01-10
If you are an Oasis fan you would love it. However, if you are only looking for something new about Oasis I will not recommend you to buy it. It is basically a review of their best songs, at least according to them with the addition of a dvd with an interview to Noel and Liam

One Of The Best Singles Of All Time.......2006-06-13
I am a #1 Coldplay fan, they are (IMHO) the best band of all time.
No Joke. I LOVE this band. ''Clocks'' Is just AMAZING. The amazing piano riff and the beautiful acoustic guitar perfectly stream through your ears like butter in a pan. It is just sooooo amazing! Do yourself a favor, pick this single up.
Over-played, "soaring" anthem!.......2005-02-22
Despite sounding good after a first listen, this track has suffered from overexposure. I hear it on tv ads touting s__t products; as background music for "inspiring" sports highlights; girl violin groups (you know, the ones trying to make classical "sexy") doing renditions; generally, any person or group looking to create some sense of majesty! oooh! excitement! grandeur! I'm getting chills! Fake nonsense like that. It's not Coldplay's fault. The best thing would be for this song to be deleted as a single and removed from future pressings of "A Rush..."
Brilliant!.......2004-11-20
As a Coldplay fan I'm obviously quite biased, but this single has got to be the best in a long time. I'll go through the thre tracks:
1. Clocks
If you haven't heard this song you must have been living under a rock. My GOD this song is good. It opens with just about the most memorable piano riff ever, then explodes into this incredible, pulsating minimalist masterpiece with the most incredible cryptic lyrics over the top. It just soars. Clocks is a knockout song, one of my favourites of all time and arguably the best on "A Rush of Blood to the Head". It's stellar. You get the idea? Still, unless you buy Coldplay singles just to support the band, it's the B-Sides that are going to make you buy this. So how are they?
2. "Crests of Waves"
The first B-side, "Crests of Waves" is a brilliant rock song with a similar sound to "Moses" and some of their new stuff; it's got that same fuzzy rhythm guitar but with vocals that are kind of buried in the music, as in: "Calling out from beneath the waves". In parts it's almost like a draft version of "Clocks", so I can see why it's on here. The first line goes, "It could be worse, I could be alone" and from there you're hooked. The chorus has this kind of suspended-in-the-air riff as Chris sings "hooo ooo ooo" like in lots of Coldplay songs. It's some of the most spine-tinglingly good guitar rock that Coldplay's ever done, and reminiscent of their new live songs. This makes you realise how good Coldplay is; very few bands would have this song as B-side. Five stars for this.
3. "Animals"
The second B-side, "Animals" is a slightly arty, with a descending guitar riff and plodding piano. It's got some great moments, particularly when it goes, "animals you are/disposable collapsible and raw", and "I missed my chance by a stone's throw". Chris martin sounds like he's yelling out from the bottom of a well or something; good stuff, if you like Coldplay, although if you don't you might not like it. I think it's live, so if you're annoyed by live B-sides then be warned; although it's not as if you're hearing an album track live, this is original stuff that you can only hear on this EP.
I'm aware that not everyone likes coldplay; if you're not a fan then obviously you're not going to like this. I've been eagerly watching the news of their third album. I have a feeling their new sound will be a mix of songs like "Clocks" and songs like "Crests of Waves". "Clocks" is obviously a big statement of their new direction, and "Crests of Waves" is similar to their new live tracks. If the new album was like a long version of what's on this single, then I'd be very happy. This is the new sound, like it or not. As you can see, I like it.
So that's my very biased (and very long) review of this single. This single won a Grammy, and very deservedly. It's got just about the best song of 2003, along with two great B-sides. It has two of my favourite Coldplay songs ever. If you're going to buy a Coldplay single just for the heck of it, for god's sake buy this one! You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Thank you for all, Mr. Ligeti........2006-06-14
It's not easy to write about Ligeti today, he has just passed away last Monday, so this is the first review I write about his works with Ligeti death... We know it could happen because of his very weak health, but it hurts when finally it's confirmed that he is not with us... We have his works and that's the most direct way to the immortality, that one Ligeti is living now in our memory and in our ears, those that were filled so many times with his extraordinary music, one of the best I know in the XXth Century, that finally will be Ligeti's century, as his work is quite complete written in that period.
Teldec continued some years ago Sony series of Ligeti music, a break that didn't suffer too much of that change, adding enormous artists like those you can listen in this CD. All the series is an outstanding thing, an some performances are really the best.
Cello Concert is my favourite Ligeti's concerto together with the Chamber one. A work in the style of his marvellous orchestral works of the `60s that explores the cello resources in an unique way. Palms' performance is very good, but he is not in so good shape like in the years of the premiere, and in general terms nowadays I prefer Queyras performance with Boulez for DG, really the version of Ligeti's Cello Concerto I think it's the best available. The ensemble playing is really amazing, one of the best I know on CD, and you have to think there're very good performances, like Boulez's one or the one played by Miklos Perenyi & Ensemble Modern, conducted by Peter Eötvös (Sony), my third version after Boulez and this one.
Clocks and Clouds, for voices and ensemble, is an interesting work that explore natural rhythms and mechanical ones, transforming them. This is the world premiere recording, I can't believe it, because it's really a very good work, sometimes in quite minimal style, working with elemental cells.
Violin concert is the typical example from Ligeti's final period, much more focused on rhythm and colour, and less explorative than his previous periods I really liked much more. This performance by Frank Peter Zimmermann is the best I know, better than Sashko Gawriloff one with Boulez and the EIC (DG), which is really very good too. I talked with Zimmermann about this recording some months ago, and he agreed to this is a marvellous recording and CD, with Ligeti help.
Sippal, dobbal, nádihegeduvel is a piece I didn't know and which I find very interesting too. Even the piece I really consider the best one in this CD is Cello Concert.
The sound is simply perfect in every piece, in the very high level Teldec is recording the full series. Warm sound, compact, clear, clean and very well balanced and direct. A natural sound in which the works seems even better.
Great CD in an outstanding project.
Deep contrasts and consistencies among four masterful pieces.......2004-11-04
This is the third disc in Teldec's "Ligeti Project", which continues the collection started by Sony's "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition" of the composer's works in performances supervised by the composer himself. It contains four works, including two world premiers, and represents works from the 1960's and the 1990's. As with most of the material in the "Ligeti Project" series, the orchestras are the Asko and Schoenberg Ensembles conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw.
The "Cello Concerto" was premiered in Berlin with Siegfriend Palm on cello in 1967, and Palm, one of the most famous interpreters of the avant garde cello over the last forty years, returns on this performance. In spite of its name, however, the work is not a traditional concerto, for the soloist does not dominate to the expected degree and only his visual presence marks his role. The piece begins with a long-held E, marked "pppppppp", the softest dynamic in Ligeti's entire oeuvre, which continues for a minute and a half before it meets F. This gradual evolution continues for the five-plus minutes of the first movement, opening up the harmonic cluster in both directions like an elegant vista. The second movement is in a way Ligeti's embrace of pre-serialist norms, for he uses open octaves and tritones, but its series of gestural mannerisms and wild gesticulations keeps it firmly in the modern tradition. This is not one of his most famous works of the 60's, but still deserving of attention.
"Clocks and Clouds", inspired by a lecture by Karl Popper on the distinction between mechanical regularity and fuzzy nebulosity, is a piece for 12 female voices and orchestra written in 1973 but never before recorded. It uses a remarkable selection of instruments containing seventeen woodwinds, but only two trumpets and no other brass, no violins among the strings, and glockenspiel, vibraphone, celestra, and two harps in important roles. The sung text is merely phonetic symols meant to blend with the instrumental sonorities. This is an ethereal, lush, and dreamlike piece that is among Ligeti's most easily listenable, and stylistically it shows inspiration from the school of minimalism which Ligeti became acquainted with during a term teaching in San Francisco.
The "Violin Concerto" (1989-1992) was written between 1989 and 1993 by comission of the violinist Saschko Gawriloff. Here the soloist is Frank-Peter Zimmermann. The work is a carnival of microtones. The orchestra consists of ten wind players, percussion, and eleven solo strings, and tuning varies wildly. Brass players often play natural harmonics that clash with equal temperment, two string players retune their instruments to follow the seemingly out-of-tune sounds of the double-bass, and several players turn to imprecise ocarinas and slide whistles. Like many works of the late Ligeti, this is in a postmodern vein, where the composer not only showcases his own new ideas but quotes his own past works ("Musica Ricercata") and borrows from Balkan folk music concepts. I concur with those who would call this music "wacky", it's certainly exhuberant and hops from style to style in a very fun way.
"Sippal, Dobbal, Nadihegeduvel" is a circle of seven songs based on poems by Sandor Weores, among the greatest of 20th century Hungarian poets whose works Ligeti and fellow Hungarian composer Peter Eotvos have extensively set. The work uses only mezzo-soprano and percussion, and was written for the Amadinda Percussion Group who also perform it here. It is in some ways a return to the faux folk music Ligeti wrote in communist Hungary, using only convential tunings but it nevertheless has a very exotic and non-traditional sound through its uses of metallophone percussion. I enjoy these songs because I am a great fan of Weores' poetry, but they are quite different than most of Ligeti's adult works and may meet many listeners with bafflement. What one must understand before hearing these seven pieces is that Ligeti has a sense of humour just like all people and is not some deadly serious ivory tower academic composer like, say, Boulez.
While perhaps not the best introduction to Ligeti (try "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition 3: Piano Works" or "The Ligeti Project IV") This is one of the strongest discs in his collected works and passionately recommended.
A great Ligeti disc, including two world premieres.......2003-11-21
This, the third entry in Teldec's Ligeti Project, is sensibly balanced in terms of its coverage of Ligeti's output. Two of the four works are vocal, two are concerti. Two are from his 'clocks and clouds' micropolyphonic phase, two are from his recent postmodern one. And all are given superlative performances.
The cello concerto of 1966 was perhaps the decisive work in Ligeti's first mature period, as it is the piece in which he begins to return to conventionally beautiful harmonic writing. The first of the two movements of the cello concerto is very slow, beginning with a single cello note initially marked pppppp (!), which slowly becomes louder until it is joined by other instruments which start to fill in the notes above and below it. Eventually, the notes in the center of the pitch range fall away, and the cello sails as high as it can reach over a single held bass note, 'alone and lost' as the composer puts it. In contrast, the second movement covers a similar process in a much more hyperactive manner, ending with the soloist sputtering out percussive raps and jerky notes. The performance here, by the dedicatee of the work, Siegfried Palm, outclasses both his earlier recording and that by Jean-Guihen Queyras on DG, and can be considered definitive.
Clocks and Clouds, for small chorus and chamber orchestra, is 30 years old now, but previously unrecorded. The title, taken from an essay by Karl Popper on the difference between discrete and continuous phenomena, is a very good description of the work, which contrasts rhythmic, mechanical repetition with near-static, slowly shifting harmonies. Ligeti himself was very critical of this work, believing it was too derivative of American minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley, but it sounds like pure Ligeti to me. The orchestration is limpid and clear, with some superb writing for tuned percussion, and the choral writing is a model of clarity.
1992's violin concerto is a paragon of later Ligeti--its Bartokian inheritance twisted by an interest in clashing tunings and impure intonation. Its five movements (fast-slow-fast-slow-fast in Bartokian arch form) provide much contrast--the first movement emerging out of repeated ostinato figures into melody, the second varying a folk-like theme (with the harmonies 'bent' by slide whistles and ocarinas). A brief, rapid intermezzo, coloured by a haze of harmonic clashes, forms the third movement, before an intense passacaglia, slow passacaglia that climaxes in dissonant, harmonically clashing notes. The virtuoso finale climaxes with a cadenza--the violinist is invited to supply his or her own, though here Frank Peter Zimmermann uses the one written by the work's dedicatee Sashko Gawriloff--before the orchestra rudely ends the work with a brief series of chords. This is by any standards a major work, and Zimmermann's performance should be considered the most desirable on record at this point.
The final work, With Pipes, Drums, Fiddles is a song cycle for soprano and percussion quartet, based on poetry by Sandor Weores. The seven songs here are brief, and the accompaniment often tends towards bizarre sound effects, but it is still a strong work. The first song rumbles away splendidly: "A mountain walks/The other mountain comes towards it", as the words have it. The second song is a rapid nonsense poem with delighted squeaks and squeals from the percussionists: in contrast, the third is merely a sequence of peaceful diatonic chords. The fourth song evokes mindless labour, the aggression that is beneath the surface eventually coming to the surface near the end. Two slow songs follow, the fifth a melancholic, ruminative piece where the vocalist is accompanied by four harmonicas, the sixth a near-folk-pop slice of melancholy, and the whole work is rounded off by a deliciously over-the-top nonsense song.
This might well be the best single Ligeti disc available today. Even by Ligeti's impressive standard, the works are consistently fine, and the performances here are all outstanding.
More serious fun from Ligeti.......2003-03-18
Serious composers probably take umbrage at the notion that their works sound "whacky," but that's the best adjective I can think of for Ligeti's exuberant compositions. This series (and its earlier incarnation on Sony) has brought us some really out-there stuff from one of the most individual composers of the 20th century. This latest release has the beautiful but quirky Violin Concerto, a kind of cuckoo-land successor to the Bartok 2nd concerto. There's also a piece for voices and orchestra from the '60s that's more in the serious vein. Not so the cycle for voice and percussion at the end of the CD, where the singer screams, yelps, and makes all manner of crazy sounds, all of it to more dramatically convey the text. Compared to many Europeans of his generations, Ligeti has always had a sense of humor (dark at times, but never the less). This latest release is a delight, and the performances are exquisite.
two string concertos, two vocal works.......2003-03-02
This, the third in the LIGETI PROJECT series, features new recordings of the Cello Concerto and the Violin Concerto, along with premieres of two vocal works, "Clocks and Clouds" from 1973, and a new work, "With Pipes, Drums, Fiddles" from 2000.
Siegfried Palm plays the cello, as he did in the original recording of the Concerto in 1967 (Wergo 60613-50). This is a fine version, but it's not clear that it surpasses the original. The recording quality, with state-of-the-art compression, is creamier, yet murkier than the more natural 1967 version. I have not heard the DG recording with Queyras, and Boulez conducting. "Clocks and Clouds" is a superb piece, one of the last in Ligeti's characteristic style of the 1960s -- with both vocals and orchestra, it could be a hybrid of "Atmospheres" and "Lux Aeterna." The Violin Concerto has been hailed as one of Ligeti's finest later works, and Frank Peter Zimmerman gives it a spectacular performance. Again, I have not heard the original DG recording with Gawriloff and Boulez to compare, but in its own right this long-awaited recording is outstanding. Finally, "Sippal, dobbal, nadihegeduvel: Weores Sandor verseire" is a collage of seven short vocal pieces, setting verse by the Hungarian poet to song. Katalin Karolyi is the mezzo-soprano, with idiosyncratic accompaniment by such instruments as slide whistles and harmonicas.
Another fine collection of Ligeti! For anyone first investigating Ligeti's soundworld, I would recommend beginning with the LIGETI PROJECT II, which includes some of his most well-known and influential orchestral works brilliiantly played by the Berlin Philharmonic. This disc is essential for collectors because of the otherwise unavailable vocal work premieres, and will give anyone a great introduction to a 20th century master.

Sonorous Beauty.......2007-03-10
When I first listened to Nightshade Rounds, I didn't find it all that great. Good, but not great.
But, like so many things that are sublime, you must experience them more than once to fully appreciate them. That was the case for me with this recording. Each time that I listen to it I like it more.
If you like solo "classical" guitar music, Sharon Isbin is a master and this is a must have recording.

Excellent.......2007-03-22
I am extremely happy with this CD. Kevin Devine is an AMAZING songwriter.
Greatest songwriter of his generation.......2004-02-04
Got this record when it first came out ( I was already a fan of Miracle of 86). He is, in my opinion, the true voice of a generation. Check out this record if you like Bob Dylan or Elliot Smith.
Very, Very Good.......2004-01-27
A very, very good album highlighted but a couple of incredible songs.
This is an amazing album.......2004-01-27
I bought this album blind based on a glowing recommendation from someone whose musical taste I have much respect for. I was frankly suprised at how great this album is. This is honestly one of the better albums I have heard in the last few years. That comment carries even more weight considering I am not normally a fan of the emo/indie rock genre.
The songwriting on this album is superb. Kevin combines his poetic take with a grounded view of the world. Anyone who believes this album is boring probably has not sat down and really listened to the intricacies of his descriptive narrative on songs such as "Ballgame", "Splitting up Christmas", and "Longer That I'm Out There".
I have lost faith in listening to popular rock/pop radio stations because they seem not to play quality, well written, well performed tracks but rather they choose to play overproduced and similar sounding tracks. But playing an artist such as Kevin Devine as part of a their regular playlist would surely help restore my faith.
This is an album you should go buy regardless of whether it falls into your normal listening genre.
This is the least boring album I've ever bought..........2004-01-23
I've never written an Amazon review before, but I just absolutely couldn't believe that someone could give this album 1 star, so I felt compelled to add my 2 cents.
The singing is awesome. The lyrics are great. The music is perfect.
The lyrics are absolutely incredible. They *are* in plain english - which is what I and many of my contemporaries speak, and which is often overlooked by people trying to pretend to be deep. This album's honest and tremendous. If you're looking for psuedo-intellectual garbage from people wearing a goth, rap-metal or indie rock uniform, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a great album of honest American music, this is it.
I saw him last night at a show opening for Bob Mould in Hoboken. I had no idea who he was, I had never heard his music before, and while I'd heard of Miracle of 86, I've never heard them. I picked up the disc at the show, and I listened to it as I drove home, then as I drove to work this morning, and now I'm listening to it again. I absolutely love it, and I'll be buying all the Miracle of 86 albums and, if I can find it, the other solo album he has (they were selling it at the show, but I didn't pick it up...which is actually why I was looking up his stuff on amazon, which led me to write this review). It's very rare that an opening act impresses me enough for me to buy their album at a show, and I've never gone out and bought all their work the next day. He was that good. Besides getting the album, you should see him live. I was very impressed. In fact, the only criticism I would have of the album is that it was rocked out more live, which suited the style (and his voice) better. Still, the album is great, and anyone who likes this kind of music (I'd describe it as similar to older Matt Witte mixed with classic pop indie) should get it without hesitation.

Infectious Mood, Glorious Tunes.......2004-09-04
Before purchasing this CD I had never heard of Léo Délibes (1836 -1891), and it is a measure of the confidence I had (and still have) in Naxos that I bought the disc anyway. And I was not disappointed. I suppose you could in one sense say that ballet music without the visual experience of the ballet is like using toothpaste when you don't have any teeth; but the music on this disc tastes so good that it's really worth listening to anyway. Délibes was obviously a master of this genre, and here on this CD there are gathered some of his best tunes in his wonderfully varied and rich orchestrations. This is a hum-along, foot-tapping job, but with plenty of musical detail to keep one's mind busy, too. The "Airs de danse dans le style ancien" from the play "Le Roi s'amuse" have kept me fascinated ever since I first heard the disc: they don't sound in the least like the French music of a century or two earlier, but still they manage to evoke a bygone age. And the brief extracts from Coppélia, Sylvia, La Source and Kassya all contain delightful material that is certainly more than just a backdrop for a troupe of ballet dancers.
The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Ondrej Lénard seems to have greatly enjoyed making the disc (at three recording sessions in 1988 and 1989). The musicians go at it with great gusto, and the mood is quite infectious. If I fail to award this disc five stars, then it is for the following reasons: 1. The recorded sound, although adequate, is not at all top-notch. A fellow Amazonite has described the early Naxos sound as "cavernous". I'm not sure that's the word I would choose, but at all events you have to imagine the microphones as being placed quite well away from the orchestra so as to capture the entirety of the sound better than the detail. Naxos does not manipulate its sound, which is positive, but the dynamic differences between the very loud passages and the quieter ones often mean that as a listener one feels that the more piano passages are not loud enough; if you turn the volume up, you get your ears blasted when the whole orchestra comes into play. 2. Connected with this is my feeling that the percussion could, in some instances, have been amplified: crashing cymbals should crash, but these sound almost as though they are behind the stage and not on it. 3. The documentation is, again, adequate, but I found the description of the plot of Coppélia confusing. Some more information about the music itself would also have been welcome but was not forthcoming.
Note added on 20 October 2005: It is perhaps a measure of the success of the Naxos disc that it motivated me to purchase the entire Coppélia ballet on DVD (in the historically accurate and wonderfully-produced performance of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on BBC Opus Arte). What a superb piece of entertainment this is!
Le roi s'amuse: reason enough to own this CD.......2002-04-10
The music from "Le Roi S'Amuse" is reason enough to own this CD. While they imitate older musical forms (much like Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances"), these seven tracks also exhibit the virtues of Delibes' more familiar ballet music: tuneful, elegant, and eminently danceable.
The music from La Source is such a tiny sample, it's almost a tease. But the Coppelia tracks capture the highlights of that ballet. While I prefer recordings of the complete ballet, there's no denying that Ondrej Lenard coaxes very spirited renditions from his orchestra. The "Music of the Automata and Waltz" has a music-box quality that is very charming, and the Czardas is strong and resonant without being exaggerated.
To those interested in ballet and unfamiliar with Delibes - whose work set a new standard in ballet and inspired Tchaikovsky - this CD is a wonderful introduction. But even if you already have Coppelia in your collection, this CD is worthwhile because of "Le Roi S'Amuse."
