The Makers' latest is a marked musical improvement over past releases, but that amateurish, completely out-of-control sound that made their first records so amazing is sorely missing. They're still as gritty and punk as they can be, but not in the way they once were. This is perhaps their most listenable record, but as far as sound quality it's almost too listenable. Still, they play like demons, and the energy that explodes in every track compensates for the "cleaned-up" recording courtesy Tim Kerr and Conrad Uno. --Adem Tepedelen

Good CD. Early music f/the Marleys is a good preview of what was t/come from them. Talented on their own merits, especially Ziggy and Stephen.

4 out of 5 stars This disc is one "Good Time"........2004-03-30

This collection is only up through 1993, but it still includes alot of their great earlier stuff. The big hit "Tomorrow People" is just one of the 5 tracks from their great "Conscious Party" album. But also here is "Lee And Molly", "One Bright Day", "Joy And Blues", and "Tumblin' Down". Nothing major from this period is missing, but I wish this did have "We Propose" or "Dreams Of Home" also. Overall it's a great 17 tracks of reggae, that would make his dad proud.

4 out of 5 stars Lively Rootsy!.......1999-06-16

Quality beats that show his dads spirit for the music with a more hip-hop feel. Irie!

In 1994, Kristin Hersh took a sabbatical from her beloved and beleaguered Throwing Muses to record her first solo album, Hips and Makers. Mostly acoustic, entirely personal, Hips' songs touch the core of Hersh's daily life, specifically as it involves her husband and family, topics she rarely explored with her band. Produced by ex-Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, Hips and Makers infuses the singer/songwriter tradition with a jolt of complexity and authority. Hersh still favors the taut, stream of consciousness lyrics she whittled down to the bone with the Muses, but she never veers into confessional "dear diary" territory, although she does allow peeks into a world where clotheslines, bee stings, and the occasional ghost aren't unusual. Musically more measured and clearly quieter than any Muses disc, Hips showcases Hersh's fluttery voice atop powerful acoustic guitar with flourishes from cello and piano. "Your Ghost," the album's moody and dazzling opener, features backup vocals by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and sets the tone for the album: like a family, it's happy on the surface, intriguing when explored. --Shawn Stewart

3 out of 5 stars Give it Time.......2005-07-29

3.5 Stars is my actual rating if anyone cares. Give this album a chance and you will come to like it. As others have said, Hips and Makers will almost attack your emotions and light a power keg inside your brain. Highlights include YOUR GHOST, the album is worth it for this track alone, just a great opener. TEETH, which features beautiful guitar picking and touching lyrics. The simplicity and loveliness of CUCKOO. The confessional LETTER. I'll admit that you have to be in the right kind of mood to listen to this music (15 songs), but it's one of those albums that just seems a little deeper than the others.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2004-10-19

I found this album used at a shop around town when I was 16. I had heard the song "Your Ghost" and liked it quite a bit. So, I got it, listened to "Your Ghost" and never got much further than that. I just thought "Eh." That was that. Then, I was weeding out some of my CDs a few months later to find some to sell so I could make some cash. I was going through, listening to everything I hadn't listened to in months. I put this in and this time it just CLICKED. Every song just seemed so full of emotion, even without paying attention to the lyrics. I put the disc on repeat for the rest of the day. I still listen to it regularly.

Hersh's voice is like a hoarse whisper at times, at others, it's a pain-filled wail. It's hard to describe it. Everything is so simple and it's got some of the best lyrics I've ever seen. Personal favorites include "A Loon" and "Houdini Blues." I highly recommend this album to everyone. Just don't wait a few months to listen to it like I did. Listen to it on repeat and let it sink in.

4 out of 5 stars Her soft , sensual side.......2004-08-24

It never really mattered how loud the likes of L7 and Babes In Toyland could scream . All it would take from Kristin Hersh is to flash her eyes and deliver a line like " i think i need some poison / to keep me tame ..." and they would ( and should ) all start running to hide themselfs . Her band's music had always been a strange , intense rock experience you just had to try again .

Considering all that the early 90's must had been a really really happy period for her . She just looks so beautiful and calm wandering in toyrooms and chatting with ballerinas in the video-clip of " Beestung " , the second cd-single of her debut as a solo artist " Hips And Makers " . The release of the album itself was a tender dark folk suprise . Although some tracks feel more like well-crafted ideas going nowhere , when Hersh finds her focus like on " Me And My Charms " and " Your Ghost " she truly touches greatness . The lyrics are poetic ( " when i kiss the angel / i have a taste of you " ) and her perfomances as haunting as always . A great piece of music indeed .

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars actually.......2003-04-17

kristen hersh is in a band called throwing muses. HIPS AND MAKERS is the debut solo album from the singer/songwriter. all acoustic and much more mellow than muses material, this album is powerful and personal. i love her vocie which is strong and beautiful.
the music is reduced to its purest form. acoustic guitar and piano are the musical backdrops to kirsten's wonderful voice which sings lyrics more like poetry which is disconnected, introspective and disturbing but in a beautiful way. it is like reading the diary of a madman or knowing what heaven is like--things no mortal can understand. such a stark album that lights up my room when it sings. my only complaint is that at times the music seems very close to each other and all the songs sound alike. sometimes the music repeats itself and travels the same territory over and over. but all in all a worthwhile trip and worth a listen, especially for MY GHOST.

1 out of 5 stars This is the audio equivalent of poking sticks into your eyes.......2001-10-26

I wanted to like this album a lot. Really.

After listening to it (atonal shrieking, rhythmic fandango, assorted bad, bad sounds) -- um. . . I'm kind of flabbergasted. It was really quite, quite bad.

Ex-Waxwing (Seattle band) frontman Rocky Votolato's third solo record is whispery and understated, full of regret but also the quiet resolve of a man looking forward to whatever's left. It's a warmer, more open record than his comparably feisty 2003 record Suicide Medicine, and upon first listen it's tempting to say he's shaved too much off the edges. Keep listening, and the music opens like cracks in a desert, split up and fractured by Votolato's dusty tales of desperation and fleeting redemption. He starts the record with "White Daisy Passing," singing lyrics like "I'm going down to sleep/On the bottom of the ocean/'Cause I couldn't let go" that contrast with the song's gentle gallop and Simon & Garfunkel aesthetics. Folk and country influences appear in the hand slap rhythm and harmonica of "Tinfoil Hats," along with the Dust Bowl dystopia of "The Night's Disguise." From the sound of Makers, Votolato's having a hard time putting his past in the past. But if he keeps putting out such lovely and evocative music, he has a solid career as a solo artist ahead of him at the very least. -Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Soundtracked by the songs of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Rocky had an unconventional upbringing on a horse ranch in Texas before his mother moved the family to Seattle. There he spent his high school years discovering the underground punk/indie scene. Inspired by bands like Fugazi, he and his brother Cody (founding member of hardcore/art combo The Blood Brothers) formed a punk band called Waxwing. Over the course of three increasingly accomplished solo albums, Rocky has matured into a truly phenomenal talent. "Makers" is an amazing album of songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn out and lonesome ghost. "Votolato has stones like Bruce Springsteen and hangover wisdom like Paul Westerberg" - Alternative Press.

5 out of 5 stars Like looking through an old photo album.......2007-02-24

This album has to be one of the best albums ever written. From the opening song "White Daisy Passing" you are drawn in by the stories of Rocky's youth. The longing for a past love, a past time in life, when things were good and simple. The album tells like a bittersweet love story that begins with a love and looking at the memories of it and it's passing by and ends with the death of a close friend. This album reminds me so much of college life and the newness of it at first, the passing days, and then one day it is all just a box full of memories that rush over you like a warm blanket and all you feel is gratefulness for experiencing them and yet you still have a small longing for the days passed.

Buy this album, it will become one of your favorites. I listen to it often when I am typing up reports and notes. Great CD.

5 out of 5 stars ...as expected..........2007-01-15

A very poignant record, as is the case with his previous records. I always love a well told story... this record provides 12. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Great Beyond.......2006-08-16

Rocky Votolato writes like he's just come back from a near death experience. Many of these songs are filled with a quiet desperation over some introspective awakening about his mortality; and nonetheless they're comforting. His voice is somewhere between Slaid Cleaves and Paul Simon on the emotional richter scale and it calms and soothes and sedates.

Mostly acoustic, with wonderful harmonies and a perfect pace; Makers is good music to chill out to and reflect on the past, present and the unknowable future. As Rocky puts it, "heaven or heavenless we're all headed for the same sweet darkness". If we all embraced that notion, we'd have little reason to disagree.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Dark and dreary, warm and weary, folky and twangy, hushed and indie.......2006-02-05

Ahhh, the lonely ballad of the singer-songwriter. A lone troubadour, pouring out their heart and soul, naked and alone, with no band to hide behind, no crashing guitars and pounding drums to shield their delicate psyche.

There was a time when being called a singer-songwriter was a badge of honor. But now, we might just as well turn tail and run. Sure the legacy of singer-songwriters is a mighty one: Bob Dylan, Elton John, Gordon Lightfoot, Janis Ian, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Donovan, Bruce Springsteen, but you'll notice a serious dearth of more -modern- musicians in that league. That's not because there aren't singer songwriters anymore, it's just that now, we typically equate singer songwriters with commercial radio, faceless pap, bad top 40, coffee houses, guys who couldn't start a band so decided to just 'do it themselves'. I'm definitely generalizing, sure. There have definitely been some notable exceptions, Iron And Wine's Sam Beam, Damien Jurado, Edith Frost, Elliott Smith, Joel Phelps, Devendra Banhart, Cat Power's Chan Marshall, Simon Joyner, Fiona Apple, Jeff Mangum, Sufjan Stevens, Will Oldham, and now you can add Rocky Votoloto to the list.

Now the funny thing is, as I mention again and again and again, if Votoloto had chosen to release this record under the name Waxwing (the name of his previous band) it probably wouldn't get lumped in with the singer-songwriters at all, and might even get a bit more attention, even if it sounded exactly the same. That's why it's always better to make up a band name even if it's just you. I've said it before, I'll say it again. No matter how cool you think your name is, unless it's Van Halen or something like that, think again! Try this out: "I'm going to see John Smith". Or "I'm going to see Black Dungeon Firefly". Or "Strangle Flanger". Or whatever. You get the idea.

Anyway, before this review loses any more of its momentum, let me just say this is one of the most beautiful records I have heard in ages and mere months into the year has most definitely secured a spot on my 2006 top ten list!

Votoloto has a gorgeously husky, whiskey soaked voice, and has an amazingly deft touch with melody and harmony. The first track is a dead ringer for Iron And Wine, delicate steel string guitar, hushed breathy vocals and sweet sweet harmonies, but the rest of the record is not nearly as restrained. Votolato's vocals are too rough and raw and powerful to be tiptoe-ing and shuffling sad boy style. No, the rest of the record sounds more like that Nirvana Unplugged record, Votolato's vocals the centerpoint, raw and ragged, but thick and warm and completely intense and emotional, more raspy and sandpapery like Cobain or Spoon's Britt Daniel or even Pete Searcy from Squirrel Bait. Not to say that he can't get all smooth, cuz there are plenty of dark and delicate tracks, where the vocals glide smoothly over sweet mournful melodies and hushed melancholy moments.

But as with all "singer-songwriters" (sigh) it's all about the songs, and this record is so chock full of amazing songs. Dark and dreary, warm and weary, folky and twangy, hushed and indie, a perfect mix of Iron And Wine, Ryan Adams, Elliott Smith, Uncle Tupelo, Spoon, and all that stuff I love. Acoustic guitars, harmonica, lapsteel, organ all woven into perfect chunks of dark and dreamy pop and twang.

5 out of 5 stars Mmm Whiskey.......2006-02-03

~AbsolutePunk.net:

Rocky Votolato is the type of musician who makes my job easy. His voice and his sound are as one so picturesque and evocative, the descriptive adjectives and sonic metaphors could practically write themselves. A throat warming whiskey, the crackle of a dim hearth flame, a creaky wooden rocking chair, and the homely twang of a handmade acoustic guitar... if there was ever an image projected by musical composition, this is that of Rocky Votolato's Makers.

In many senses, Makers is an album you'd expect from someone much older than Rocky V. Whereas Suicide Medicine seemed made to accompany a road trip slideshow (and Makers does as well to an extent), Makers gives a stronger vibe of a more stationary, road-weary Rocky; riper with a few years of age, pensive in reflection, contemplative of his rung on the ladder of success and love, and confidently deliberating the slow road to the grave. It's a meditative pleasure to hear these ruminations in audio format and worth listening to if only for the invigorating refreshment of hearing acoustic rock with maroccas, slide guitar, tambourines, and harmonicas done right, ohhhh so right. All too rarely are we afforded the opportunity to enjoy this winning combination in such pure form.

Again as always, Votolato exercises his knack for tearing - and I mean tearing! - into the human core with soulful chords and worn melodic vocals. There are times where the laceration in your heartstrings is almost tangible, and this is by no means a relationship record. The romantic words penned for "The Night's Disguise" ("the clouds are holding up the dawn / they're stilts or crutches I can't tell which one / to keep the short days looking longer / or to keep the sunlight from falling on broken legs / but the night's disguise is wearing thin") work in beautiful contradiction with the convictive chorus; it's a juxtaposition that stirs me every time. In other highlights, the piano accompanied outro of "Goldfield", the rat-tat verses of "She Was Only in it for the Rain", the dreamy finger picked conclusion of "Streetlights", and the blossoming harmonies in "White Daisy Passing" all make for a thoroughly satisfying listen. I imagine that if we lived in an era that idolized brilliant singer/songwriters, Rocky would be a fan favorite.

As a record, it shares a similar flaw with Suicide Medicine. Until you've had repeated sittings, several tracks may fail to grip you, especially towards the tail end. It is also not as instantly attractive as Rocky's past efforts, but picture it in this manner: you've encountered the attractive young adult, and now allow me to introduce you to the wrinkled elder man. Don't necessarily favor immediate appeal, but instead, seek out the wisdom within... then make your judgments.

Mine? Makers is as intoxicating as the whiskey after which it's named.

Since Bruce Hornsby first infiltrated the pop landscape in 1986 with the year's most socially conscious ballad, the Virginia native has proven himself to be a gifted singer-songwriter, piano player, and bandleader. All of those talents are much in evidence on this double CD of live material culled from his band's last two years on the road. A pianist with the chops to evoke everyone from Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner to Floyd Cramer and Vince Guaraldi, Hornsby takes a number of opportunities to stretch out here, including a solo introduction to his breakthrough hit, "The Way It Is," that explains why he almost ended up on the Windham Hill label. Not surprisingly, the latter-day Grateful Dead sideman also gives his band plenty of instrumental slack, which can make lengthy workouts like "Spider Fingers" a bit daunting for pop listeners. But devotees of Hornsby's more straightforward material will still find much to love here, including haunting renditions of "The End of the Innocence" (written with Don Henley) and Hornsby's more recent "Fortunate Son" (not to be confused with the Creedence song). There's not much that could be called noise here, but Here Come the Noise Makers proves Hornsby is still a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Best from Bruce.......2007-01-11

This is the best Bruce Hornsby CD yet. It is a live CD with amazing piano work. If you like Bruce Hornsby, you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars To my fan.......2006-06-19

Apart chapter of this live songs, with a little erudite effort retrospective anti-academic repetitive pomadas, are at least six fine bonbons masterpieces:

The lady with the fan
Stander on the mountain
The road not taken
Fortunate Son
The End Of The Innocence
Mandolin Rain/Black Muddy River

They rock and stay at this sensitivity heart.

5 out of 5 stars Live and At Their Best.......2006-02-14

As most Hornsby fans know, Bruce and The Noisemakers are one incredible live show. They play and play and then, play some more. There is nothing like the live music of Hornsby & The Noisemakers. So, obviously, a live recording is heaven for the Hornsby fan, but I would say that it is heaven for anyone who loves a great and passionate jam.

Suffering from the inferiority complex of the underrated college football team, most followers of Bruce Hornsby call out something like "He doesn't get the respect he deserves!" Which, by the way, IS true. But the bottom line is this is one universally gifted talent that must be heard in the live context. Songs like "The Way It Is" and "Mandolin Rain" get mastered by extended solo sections that blow you away. And song after song, you wonder if it could get any better than this. This is music the way it was meant to be. As Sting's "Bring On The Night" brought jazz music's gifted musicians into the pop spotlight, "Here Come The Noisemakers" shows that pop music has its own share of musical genius. The adventuresome nature of this phenomenally talented group proves that the jam band is not only dead, but they are darn good.

If you like Hornsby, you'll love "Here Comes The Noisemakers." If you don't get Hornsby and wonder what all the hullabaloo is about, get this CD and turn it up loud. You won't regret it.

By the way, if you love this recording and want more live Hornsby action, check out munckmusic.com for over 20 live shows (including solo piano shows from Germany and Denmark).

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like a good time..........2005-02-04

I've never really been a big Hornsby fan. I was familiar with the singles and liked them, but he remained under my radar. But I kept catching him in performances on TV and thought, "This guy is an outstanding talent." So when I saw this one I figured this would be a great opportunity to hear him cut loose. Well, that's exactly what he does on this double set. A true Hornsby fan could give you a better breakdown of how this compares to his other work, but from a newcomer's standpoint, this is an excellent example of a multi-talented musician who doesn't limit himself to a sound; he blends rock and jazz into an amazing package. Not a five star for me as he occasionally overindulges on the free form jazz, but this is a nice listen. Crank it up a bit to really appreciate where Hornsby is willing to take his music.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Musical Journey: Extended Sets, Hornsby & Beyond.......2005-01-29

Nearly 15 years into a successful music career, it seemed long overdo for Bruce Hornsby to put out a live album. Bruce has been responsible for some outstanding music and during this period put out six solo albums. His first three albums were actually done as part of "Bruce Hornsby and the Range". This records made the piano maestro Hornsby a Pop star. While his latter three albums didn't have the commercial success, Hornsby would continue to strengthen his niche among his fan following - while continuing to explore some new avenues. With this album, "Here Come the Noise Makers" - Hornsby delivers the goods. This collection is a 2 CD Live Set. It contains 136+ minutes of music! Of the 18 tracks that are included, only 6 tracks are less than 6 minutes (3 of those less than 5 minutes) - this makes for some great extended play music. Hornsby does a great job at providing some nice segues between his music and the music other other Rock artists and even some Classical Composers.

This live collection actually comes from performances over a three year period (1998-2000). These performances include 1999 Woodstock, New Years Eve at Williamsburg Virginia, Austin City Limits (PBS), BET Jazz Central, and various other tour dates. Normally when there is a live release, I prefer the album to be a live recording from a single concert performance. I prefer it to be delivered in the order in which the songs were actually delivered. By having things from a single night and in order - I feel there is continuity and the magic of the concert is captured perfectly. What amazes me is how well this collection was put together. There seems to be a great flow from song to song. It does seem like it was a single performance from a single night. If this was from a single night, this might have even been that much better. One of the things I like best is how it captures the reaction from the audience - particularly you can hear the audience go "Bruuuce" after many of the songs. Usually that homage is reserved for Springsteen, but Hornsby is just as deserving of that honor.

Since the songs were taken from performances between 1998 and 2000, the most songs come from Hornsby's most recent album, the double set - "Spirit Trail". There are five songs that album: "Great Divide", "King of the Hill", "Sneaking Up on Boo Radley", "Fortunate Son", and "Sunflower Cat". If there is one thing that is disappointing is that there is not a lot of material from the "Bruce Hornsby and the Range" days that isn't included. There are a total of 7 songs from this era (i.e. the first 3 albums), this includes: "The Way It Is", "Mandolin Rain", "Red Plains", "The Road Not Taken", "The Valley Road", "Jacobs Ladder", and "Stander on the Mountain". Of those three albums, it seems like "A Night on the Town" was really left out - "Stander on the Mountain" is the only song included on this album.

Hornsby is backed by some solid musicians, but ultimately it is Hornsby's Baldwin Piano that is going to be the star of this collection. I consider Hornsby the pioneer of something that has been called "The Virginia Sound". The best way I can describe this sound is a mixture of a lot of different genres of music: Jazz, Classicial, Bluegrass, Rock, Country, and Pop. On this collection there will be a wide range of instruments incorporated into the songs to give this such a distinct sound: Clarinet, Saxaphone, Guitar, Accordian, and Mandolin. There are times during the performance where Hornsby will go hands-down into a Classical Music Performance. This is found on the "Piano Intro/Great Divide" track where Hornsby "warms up" with some classical piano before going into his "Virginia Sound" on "Great Divide". You'll also hear this on Track 8 which includes a "Piano Intro" before leading into Gershwin's "I Love You Porgy" and then going into Samuel Barber's "Nocturne". Midway through this segue of songs, you'll hear Hornsby go into some notes of his song "The Way It Is" (which he will seamlessly perform following this sequence). You will also hear some Classical Work as a prelude to "King of the Hill" - this is Bill Evans' "Twelve Tone Tune". You'll hear a Jazz influence in several places - particularly when Bruce plays "Spider Fingers" followed by Bud Powell's "Tempus Fight". You'll also hear this strongly on "Sneaking Up on Boo Radley".

Back when Hornsby recorded "A Night on the Town", The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia played guitar on several tracks. Hornsby and Garcia developed a good synergy. With Garcia passing away prior to these recordings, Hornsby pays appropriate tribute by included two songs co-written by Jerry: "Lady With a Fan" and "Black Muddy River" (this song is the finale performed sandwiched inside Hornsby's classic "Mandolin Rain"). Hornsby also pays tribute to Bob Dylan by performing his "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Take a Train to Cry" - this is performed as a segue to Hornsby's "Sunflower Cat". You will hear the popular Huey Lewis song, "Jacobs Ladder" - but this song was written by Hornsby his version is on his "Scenes From the Southside" album. You will hear a traditional instrumental, "Blackberry Blossom" as a segue to "Jacobs Ladder". Finally many know that Hornsby wrote Don Henley's classic song "The End of the Innocence". There is a live version of Bruce performing this song - and this is to place to hear it.

Most of the songs are excellent versions of Bruce's studio work. The liner notes contain a short writeup by Hornsby and list some band members with some acknowledgements to people. There are no lyrics included and the specific songs are not credited to the night they were recorded. Despite these quirks, this is still an excellent collection for true Hornsby fans and new fans alike - Highly Recommended.

Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads handled producing chores for this 1988 release, which happily coincided with the Melody Makers' "reggae period." The title track captures the true reggae spirit--serious philosophy, spliffs, sunshine, and plenty fun. The group had yet to reach full maturity, but Conscious Party, which spun off hit singles "Tumbling Down" and "Tomorrow People," still stands as one of their most successful. --Elena Oumano

4 out of 5 stars Serious reggae CD.......2007-07-06

This is definitely the spirit. "Tumbling Down" and "Tomorrow People" are the two stars from this collection, but overall it's a very positive and enjoyable CD. I came late to Ziggy Marley fandom, so have worked my way back to this CD. I can tell the band's grown from here, but this is still a fresh and fun sound.

4 out of 5 stars great cd.......2007-03-19

excellent cd - i liked tomorrow people, lee and molly, conscious party and have you ever been to hell..

4 out of 5 stars Like father, like son........2003-12-09

Much like "Julian Lennon" four years before, "Ziggy Marley" dared to make an album as good as one of his fathers, and just about did. "Conscious Party" is so catchy, and so easy to like, they could have called it "Contageous Party". It's pop-reggae. Every song here is good, but the better ones are the title track, "Tumblin' Down", "We Propose", and the hit "Tomorrow People". That song is so great, I almost get emotional when I hear it. "Dreams Of Home" is an excellent closer as well. I play this one just as much as "Peter Tosh", "H.R.", and his dad. Maybe that's because I have it on cd, cassette, and vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD from Bob's son.......2003-06-21

At only 20 years of age, Ziggy marley wrote and recorded some of the greatest music of his career. With backing vocals from his brothers and sisters, and great musicianship, this would turn out to be one of Ziggy's best, if not the best. Every song is great, and get's to the point. From Earl "Chinna" Smith's wah wah feel on tracks such as "Conscious Party, Lee and Molly, and We Propose", to the beautiful acoustic feel of "Dreams of Home". And we can't forget the standout tracks "Tomorrow People and Tumblin' Down" which hit the charts in "88. A must buy.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Reggae Album.......2001-10-22

I own this CD and One Bright Day as well. My fondness for each of these discs acknowledges the different tenor of the CDs. Conscious Party has an introspective flavor to it, whereas One Bright Day is more overtly political. That being said, this disc is filled with wonderful tracks. Tomorrow People is the excellent track that caught my attention prior to buying the disc. The songs "We Propose", "What's True", "Have You Ever Been To Hell", "A Who A Say", and "Conscious Party" all stand out, both lyrically and musically. Plus, I love how the CD leaves its listener on the mellow "Dreams Of Home". This disc is a wonderful choice.

4 out of 5 stars Better than other reviews lead you to believe.......2006-03-10

I'm surprised at the negative reviews for this album. Everyone has their own taste I suppose, but to me this is one of Ziggy Marley & The Melody Maker's best albums. I won't say it's their best of all time, but it's definitely one of their best. This album even includes one of Ziggy's best songs "Justice". I find the lyrics to be excellent, not on every track but for the majority of the album. And it's hard to find a track that doesn't have a good sound to it. For me this is one of those albums that I can definitely listen to from start to finish, I recommend you give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2004-04-19

Well done overall. Not a classic but certainly worth putting in the line up of fun music. Good for travel.

1 out of 5 stars An Awful Album!!!!! DO NOT BUY IT!!!!.......2002-09-06

My cousin recommended this album to me, telling me it was as good as Conscious Party. I tried to like it. I really did. But I had to face facts: it is an AWFUL album. In terms of quality, it is not even close to Conscious Party. The lyrics are terrible!! They are poorly written, simplistic, and his delivery stinks. To this day, I refuse to purchase another Ziggy Marley album for fear of being duped again.

4 out of 5 stars Look who's dancing AA'OOO. Look who's dancing now.......2000-10-20

Look who's dancing AA'ooo; Look who's dancing now. When I listen to that I can't get it out of my head. Thats a good thing though. Perfect album to listen to when you're in traffic. Normally when an album has two versions of the same song one bites. No so on One Bright Day. Both versions of When the lights gone out flow. All love, Problems, All you got, and Urban Music are the highlights. Other tracks are good too.

5 out of 5 stars Essential For All Music Lovers.......2004-02-24

I used to think that this was a great record. After a few years of listening to it, I'm now convinced that, in an all-around way, it's one of the best records ever recorded by anybody. 100% coherent, the lyrics, playing, singing, producing, sequencing - everything - is impeccable. The messages are inspired, uplifting, unpretentious, and fun, yet the meanings run as deep as the soul. The playing is precise yet relaxed, and absolutely phenomenal. This is a perfect record. I'm writing this review right after buying and listening to 'Dragonfly', which is a good record, but 'Spirit' hits peaks that few artists ever achieve in their lifetimes. I sometimes wonder why this record never completely blew up...maybe someday it still will.

5 out of 5 stars My ABSOLUTE favorite ZM&MM's.......2003-09-01

I have been an avid fan of Ziggy's since I first heard him on a"Reggae Sunsplash-1982", singing "Sugar Pie" when he was about 13 years old. "Spirit of Music"is all about the MelodyMakers. They write, sing and do so much on this album. Stephen's song, "One Good Spliff" is awesome. Stephen's voice on his Dad's song, "High Tide or Low Tide" is hard to distinguish from his Dad's. Not to take anything from Ziggy, "Many Waters" is one of the most sultry, sexual songs I've ever heard. "All Day, All Night" has been my six year old's favorite lullaby all his life. Of the faster songs, "Beautiful Day", "Higher Vibration", et al are fantastic. Whether you have been a reggae fan before or not, this album is outstanding. Some songs are not very reggae oriented, yet their lyrics are so profound, philosophical and beautiful. This, of all the reggae cd's I own (with the exception of a couple of Bob's) is my all time favorite. My children (12 and 6) are converting all their little friends into reggae rugrats. We own over 150 reggae cd's, so I do believe I'm fairly informed. Have an IRIE time listening to this fantastic album!

5 out of 5 stars Great........2003-01-04

This is a great Ziggy CD. I usually find myself skipping a few songs on his CDs, but this CD is different. All the songs are different, somewhat toned down a bit from his previous CDs. I noticed that Stephen, Ziggy, Damian, and Julian all worked on this CD. I hadnt noticed that before. I dont think Damian played a part in anything but the drums though. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Their Best Album Yet; More On The Way???.......2002-09-08

I guess Ziggy & Co. finally got tired of appeasing their record labels with tacky, pop-styled reggae tunes and came out with this creative gem. Almost a 180-degree turn for the group, about 3/4 of the album features nothing but stripped-down acoustic arrangements that go a long way towards bringing out the consistently fine songwriting that has always been Ziggy's strength. In addition, younger brother Stephen flexes his considerable vocal muscle on two obscure Bob Marley covers (All Day All Night, High Tide Or Low Tide) as well as penning one of the album tracks (One Good Spliff). The Marley sisters also sound as great as ever with their harmonies lending a distinct, soulful quality to the songs.

Fans of Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers will probably have trouble getting into this album on account of the sound being radically different from what they're used to on previous releases. Make no mistake, it'll only take a few serious listens to convince even the most stubborn of followers that The Spirit Of Music is the direction that they have been truly waiting for the group to take for some time now. Let's hope they keep coming out with a couple more brilliant efforts like this one for a change!

Amazon.com essential recording

Elgar's Dream of Gerontius is, in effect, a sung tone poem and resides at the core of English choral music; it is the supreme achievement among Elgar's large-scale works. Interestingly, its premiere came in the last months of the 19th century, a time, much like our own, when fluctuating styles and experimentation existed alongside a lingering and powerful devotion to the older, traditional ways. Thus, the release of this classic 1975 recording (intelligently paired with another sumptuous, musically significant choral work, The Music Makers) is not only timely but serves to remind us of how successfully Elgar bridged both Romanticism's dwindling currents and the swelling streams of impressionism and atonality. This performance, featuring the 86-year-old Adrian Boult in total, rock-steady command, shows what magic can happen when conductor and performers are in complete sync, musically and philosophically. The melodies are abundant and beautiful, the choral writing is magnificent, and the sound, especially in Gerontius, is full and vibrant. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best singer of "Gerontius".......2001-03-19

This is the second recording of this work I have in my possession, the other being the Britten version, and I have also heard the Barbirolli one. This one is undoubtedly my favourite, if not specifically for the interpretation (as in a way I prefer Britten for reasons mentioned below), then certainly for the soloists. Peter Pears has his fans but I am definitely not one of them. His harsh tone and strained high notes are very off-putting. Neither do I think Richard Lewis is ideal for the role of Gerontius, his voice being a little bit too clean and English for this music. Admittedly Elgar was about as English as you could get in terms of his music, but reading about Boults comments on Elgar's intentions, as well as taking into account the Catholic roots of this piece, so far removed from all things Anglican, it is clear that a more operatic tenor is called for. Nicolai Gedda is the perfect choice- a very fine operatic tenor with excellent English. As for the other soloists, Kim Borg on the Barbirolli recording makes a few strange noises with the words, John Shirley-Quirk has a slightly woolly tone, but Robert Lloyd has it all- a fantastic voice and no problems with the language. My only complaint would be that occasionally he disrupts the line of the music too much, punching out certain words for emphasis. The mezzo soloist is less clear cut. Baker is regarded as perhaps the best of them all and this is probably true. Watts is very solid but I was very disappointed at her missing out of the top A, one of the great climaxes of the piece in my opinion. And Minton has a very fine dark voice, but occasionally has a problem with flatness.

So overall I would say this is the best recording for the soloists, as I do not like listening to either Lewis or Pears. The interpretation is a matter of taste. My only problem with Boult is that occasionally (as in the end of the first bass solo with the priest and attendants) he tries to draw out the phrases so much that the singers find it hard to sustain, whereas Britten keeps the line sustained to the end of every phrase and beyond, making for more continuity. Also there is a point near the end of the piece where some of the players seem to lose sight of the beat and there is a lack of ensemble. However, I would still go for this one above the others for the overall performance.

5 out of 5 stars Janet Baker at her Best!.......2000-10-13

Having already acquired a number of recordings of the Dream, I wanted this recording because of The Music Makers. This is truly a wonderful elegaic work. Barbirolli told Janet Baker to "sing it as though you're dreaming." She does, and the effect is very moving.

The Gerontius under Boult is very good and Helen Watts is a lovely Angel (even though she doesn't go for the top A). My one small gripe with the recording is Gedda. I much admire him but his English is not accented and this affects my enjoyment. Robert Lloyd makes a great Priest and Angel of the Agony.

5 out of 5 stars Boult's Gerontius.......2000-04-21

Alongside Sir John Barbirolli's recording of this music, this is the greatest Gerontius yet committed to disk. I would not want to be without either performance, and each is equally great in its own way.

Where Barbirolli stresses a dramatic, almost operatic approach to the work, Boult opts for a grand, majestic, oratorio style, without degenerating into pomposity or stuffiness. There is a tremendous grandeur, and a monumental feel, to the entire performance.

Gedda seems like an odd choice for Gerontius, but his English is free of any accent, and he brings all the commitment and fervor we came to expect from him. Watts is not the equal of Barbirolli's mezzo, Janet Baker, but she sings in many ways beyond her stature, sounding truly great at times. Lloyd is my favorite singer for the role of the Priest/Angel. Choral work is highly polished, and in the Demons chorus Boult really lets them open up. Recorded sound is first rate.

The Music Makers is a lesser work, but well worth hearing. The sound is a bit dated (earlier than Gerontius), and the chorus not quite as polished. But Baker is outstanding (as always) and there are few recordings of this piece.

Indispensible for any Elgarian.

5 out of 5 stars glorious gerontius.......1999-03-10

EMI recorded Gerontius under Boult very near the end of the conductor's active career. He had known Elgar (they first met around 1903) and was very highly thought of by the composer, who is on record as believing that the future of his music was safe in Boult's hands. Gerontius is a wonderful piece, and this is the magical, historic performance that everyone hoped it would be. Boult's great gift was in seeing a work whole, the entire architecture, and that is exactly what happens here, but in addition there are thrilling moments - the hair-raising demons' chorus, the tremendous 'Praise to the Holiest' and the shattering crash when Gerontius sees the face of God - and the most beautiful lyrical phrasing in the gentler orchestral bits. The choice of Nicolai Gedda as Gerontius was inspired, and his beautiful ringing tenor is just right ; Helen Watts is idiomatic and reliable (though not as exciting as Janet Baker in the Barbirolli version) and Robert Lloyd is first-rate. This is probably the best 'Gerontius' on disc. It is uniquely authoritative, works excellently in the details and as a whole, and is unwaveringly beautiful to listen to. 'The Music Makers', a lesser work (which DOES, however, have the unrivalled Janet Baker), is enjoyable and idiomatic too, and useful bonus, but 'Gerontius' is what this set is all about.

Unless you are willing to spring for the fantastic Bear Family sets, Jimmie Davis material is hard to find. Davis was one of the most popular Country music stars before World War II and his career lasted until he died in 2000. He is most famous for his song "You Are My Sunshine" which is included here with other hits such as "Nobody's Darling But Mine." This set is an excellent companion to the the "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now" 2 disc set as it includes hits not on that set. Outside of the now out of print Country Music Hall of Fame disc, this is the best single disc introduction to classic Davis material.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great early compilation.......2007-04-27

Despite the photo of a mature Hoyt Axton these songs all date from the early to mid 60s. Back then he was a young high energy folk singer and several of these songs feature Hoyt alone with his guitar. Some great songs like 500 Miles(a hit for Peter Paul and Mary) and Greenback Dollar(Kingston Trio) and almost all the songs here were written by Hoyt. Its a fascinating trip back to the formative days of a great American singer-songwriter.
