3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

Newly remastered from a Voice of America mono off-line aircheck, one hears more detail and ambiance here than in previous reissues of this controversial performance taped live at Carnegie Hall April 6th, 1962. The conductor's infamous "disclaimer" disassociating himself from Glenn Gould's slow tempi is preserved along with a snippet from an interview in which Gould defends both his interpretation and Bernstein's actions. The first movement starts slow, but insidiously speeds up to a tempo not far from the norm. Flickering in and out of Bernstein's turgid orchestral backdrop, Gould downplays the music's fiery intensity, seeking to emphasize its meditative qualities and contrapuntal implications. If Sony wanted to issue a Gould Brahms D- Minor, why not the more incisive, and far better-engineered October 1962 Baltimore version? --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Gould beatified! Sanctification next?.......2007-05-03

With the re-engineered release of this 1962 recording, operatives of the Holy See have finally been enabled by Providence to determine that the noises in the background, previously assumed to be coughs and groans, were indeed snores. With this knowledge in hand, papal legates have searched for survivors of the historic concert and located two who remember precisely snoring during the occasion. Both were lifelong insomniacs, for whom doctors had given up all hope, yet both found themselves lulled into deep slumber, attributing their MIRACULOUS cure to Master Gould's profound lento. Another such intercession would surely qualify Gould for sainthood.

4 out of 5 stars Leonard Bernstein and Glenn Gould square off.......2006-11-10

I heard about this recording from a radio piece on NPR and immediately felt I had to have it. It is a unique piece of history. There is the introduction Bernstein gave the audience explaining why he almost refused to conduct the concerto, and an equally enlightening interview with Gould himself. Then there is Gould's unique interpretation. Whether or not you prefer a more traditional interpretation is no matter, this one is still worth owning alongside your own.

5 out of 5 stars GOULD...ONCE AGAIN I FALL IN LOVE..........2006-11-03

Once again Gould takes us to another dimension.
His version is absolutely romantic and unique.
Always the musical establishment fails in how to recognize real talent!! Having this version dieing for more than 25 years, is a clear prove of that...

5 out of 5 stars TRAGICALLY, ONLY OF HISTORICAL INTEREST..........2006-06-19

Yes, and it pains me to say so: this recording is of historical interest only. The realization is great: GG is a genius of art, and a wonder of digital ability. Lenny and the NY Phil are good as well. The problem is that the microphone used for the live broadcast from which this recording was made was placed away from Gould and his piano, and way out in the auditorium above the audience. GG is almost literally drowned out by the idiotic-tubercular-spazmotic audience which hacks away, choking and spewing, during Gould's most exquisite piano solos. (Although I must say that at the end of the performance, that same audience gave GG a rousing standing ovation.)

Lenny Bernstein was cool, as was the NY Phil. The whole rhubarb over Gould's reading was created by media journalists who got paid by the penny-word: stupid, inane cretins frightened by Art. What a waste of artistic time! Afterwards at the cocktail party following this performance, Lenny told Gould, "You played so beautifully in the cadenza that I almost c**e in my pants [!]" (as cited in Bazzana, Wondrous Strange: the Life and Art of Glenn Gould).

It's really a shame that a decent recording wasn't made miked close to Gould's piano. What a loss for Art!

4 out of 5 stars Mainly for historical reasons.......2006-04-08

Love it or hate it, the main reason for the release is for historical reasons. The performance, and especially Bernstein's pre-performance remarks, caused a huge controversy in the press, and the story has been relayed ever since.
This recoding, and the excellent liner notes, correct a lot of misconceptions: Gould was in favor of Bernstein's remarks; Gould's interpretation is no longer considered exceptionally slow by today's standards (meaning the Gould must have had some effect on a few of today's artists). It is fascinating to hear what all the commotion was about.
The most interesting part is that the critics fared the worst in the judgement of time: the critic from the New York Times absolutely seems ridiculous (in his review that was written in the form of a letter to an imaginary friend!) with his snide remarks that come off as a cranky senior citizen criticizing the youngsters on the stage. And the fact that so many other newspapers picked up the story as if it was a boxing match.
Reagrdless of recording quality (originally meant to be a mono radio broadcast), this is a fascinating performance that documents a very interesting concert in the history of an American conductor and orchesetra, and deserves this wide release. It shouldn't be the only recording of this Brahms concerto you should have, but it should sit right next to it.

5 out of 5 stars An opera that deserves consideration by a major company.......2003-10-04

I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.

This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.

The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.

If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.

    5 out of 5 stars Soaring majesty!.......2001-12-19

This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.

3 out of 5 stars a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23

I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

          1 out of 5 stars Infinite Felicity - Not.......2006-02-05

One of the greatest disappointments I have ever had in my life was listening to the recordings of Purcell's music that were made in the 1990s by Robert "Everything He Touches Turns To Dross" King. The physical impact of the recordings was comparable to a strand of wet spaghetti and it takes real talent in a conductor to make James Bowman sound so ordinary so much of the time. Particular scorn must be reserved for the casting of Michael George. (What is the difference between Michael George and George Michael ? Answer: George Michael has a voice that is pleasing to listen to.) Michael George has a tolerable light baritone provided the dynamic never gets above mezzo-forte and provided the coloratura never gets out of first gear. (It can be heard to good effect on Hyperion's recordings of Bruckner's and Faure's Requiems.) However, John Gosling, Purcell's miraculous basso profundo of the seventeenth century, he most emphatically is *not*. If David Thomas (the only man for the job) was unavailable then the recordings should not have been attempted.

The problem is that these dreadful recordings have Hyperion's imprimature and so this divine music will probably have to endure a purgatorial wait of at least a generation for a new complete recording.

I'm sorry to see that King has finished with Vivaldi's sacred music. This is a pity, because the amount of damage he can do in this field is limited; let's face it people, once you've got the Four Seasons and the Glorias you've got everything.

A new project for King is clearly required along the same lines. May I suggest a complete recording of the Telemann cantatas ? Then we can all sleep peacefully in our beds until the time comes to sleep peacefully in our graves.

5 out of 5 stars Important Purcell Project.......2001-06-12

It was by this project that I made the acquaintance of Henry Purcell and his music. He just knocked me flat. How I love the elegance, gaiety and wistfulness (to name but a few characteristics) of his music. For this first Purcellian project (started in the mid eighties), director Robert King assembled a truly crack team of Early music soloists and musicians, he also provided extensive commentary in the booklet and wrote a biography on Purcell. This venture entailed the recording of the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs (composed for Royalty and festive occassions).

Only in the famous Hail Bright Cecilia and Come Ye sons of art away, the Choir of New College, Oxford lends it's support otherwise the soloists themselves perform the choral parts. Which certainly contributes to the intimacy of the recording. Robert King is certainly right in saying that the texts of these pieces aren't great poetry, but the music is divine (the usual flatttering of kings and nobles)! King and his team deliver an outstanding and important contribution to the Purcell discography.

My favourites among the soloists were: Gillian Fisher, James Bowman, Michael Chance, Michael George, Charles Daniels, Rogers Covey-Crump and John Mark Ainsley. Charles Daniels pulls this project indeed spendidly off with his solo Arise my muse. I loved the exquisite countertenor duets like Hail gracious Gloriana or Sound the trumpet and always Michael George's bass parts. But that's just a selection of the riches presented here. Afterwards Robert King went on to record the complete secular solo- and sacred music of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars valuable and enjoyable.......2000-01-12

This set will delight any lover of Purcell. Ideally, you will want all 8 CD's; but if you must pick and choose, get at least Vols 1, 2 & 8 (these contain, between them, Welcome to all the pleasures, Hail Bright Cecilia and Come ye sons of art). Volume 1, entitled Royal and Ceremonial Odes, was probably recorded before King knew for sure that his idea of producing the complete chamber vocal works of Purcell would be commercially viable. Hence, the separate title and no mention of the volumes still to come. But by the time the second volume was made, the future of the project was already mapped out. The purpose of the project was to record all 24 surviving odes and welcome songs of Purcell. (This project was later followed by a similar undertaking: an 11-CD set of all surviving Purcell's anthems and services - of those, get at least vols 3 & 9). By the time King was entrusted with this massive and ambitious project, he was still in his twenties. But King knew what he was doing. His assumption of the project was backed by years of research. He even prepared his own performing editions of the works he intended to record, and furnished sleeve notes for each of the CD's in his Purcell series (Later, he also wrote a book about the composer). King's notes are insightful, although his choice of vocabulary is somewhat peculiar and repetitive. The musical results are wonderful, by all accounts. I am especially pleased that King was able to assemble such an outstanding cast of singers. For me, the highlights of the series include: Arise my muse from vol 1 (an alto solo sung by Charles Daniels); Bowman's 'Tis Nature's Voice from vol 2 (although my all time favorite version of this air is on the Herreweghe); alto-high tenor duet Let Caesar and Urania live from vol 3 (you should hear Bowman and Covey-Crump blend in this one!); The sparrow and the gentle dove from vol 4 (Charles Daniels); alto-high tenor duet Sweetness of nature from vol 6 (Bowman and Padmore); an ornate tenor duet And now when the renowned Nassau from vol 7 (Daniels and Covey-Crump); and the glorious high tenor solo O how blest is the isle from vol 8 (Padmore).
