Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
The Best Album Of A Great Band.......2007-02-12
Knowing the story of the Comsat Angels, of their years of commercial disappointment and frustration, it's remarkable that near the end of their career they would produce such an outstanding album as My Minds Eye. At this point, there was little hope that they would ever score a hit single; maybe that's what freed them to just create great music. To those familiar with the earlier Renascent releases, the sound has evolved here; the post-punkness is virtually gone (this album having been recorded in 1991). Steve Fellows' emotive vocals shine through, especially on Always Near, Magonia, and I Come From The Sun. Other great tracks are Shiva Descending, with its slight Mid-Eastern musical hook, and the catchy Field Of Tall Flowers. But then all the songs are good. By all rights, this brilliant album should have been topping the charts and the band showered with acclaim. Consider yourself lucky that you have come across it here...and don't hesitate to buy it.

Customer Reviews:
A Fine Comeback Record.......2004-05-29
I'm delighted to see that this solid, alternative, guitar rock album is back in print. The music itself is excellent, though this time around the vocals don't quite do the songs justice. Stephen Fellows sings about an octave higher than on the classic records and this makes his voice sound a bit whiney. He also made the mistake of trading in the cold wave lyrics of alienation that characterized his early work for trite platitudes (for example: Driving, And All The Stars) and fanciful musings (I Come From The Sun, Shiva Descending). But the songwriting mostly eclipses these deficiencies.
Be aware that this is a domestic reissue of the first UK edition of this record. The original US version, credited to the C.S. Angels, contains two wonderful bonus tracks (presumably non-album singles) for a total of 12 songs. Since the price of this CD is a bit high anyway, you may as well seek out and buy the augmented version.
The Comsat Angels' ultimate material can only be found on the highly sought after first three albums (Waiting For A Miracle, Sleep No More, and Fiction) and their BBC collection, Time Considered As A Helix Of Semi-Precious Stones. Bootlegs surface occasionally, but official CD copies of these recordings are insanely rare and expensive. That said, anyone (myself included) who has heard this early post-punk material will tell you that whatever you have to pay for it, it is worth every single penny.
Near the apex for the decade.......2001-07-13
This 1992 album came out of the blue sky after a six-year, seemingly final, silence from Stephen Fellows' band.
Fellows rates this his favourite Comsats album, although The Glamour (1995) runs it close. Even more, it is one of the lasting rock albums of the decade. Let's hope that, like the Notorious Byrd Bros, it always remains in print.
Guitar hero Jimi Hendrix, rather than 12-stringer Roger McGuinn, is probably Fellows' mainman, but here he summed up his space fascinations to produce the perfect companion piece for McGuinn's Space Odyssey: 'I, I come from the sun/I've looked everywhere but you're the one/You you fascinate me/I whisper your name and you are gone/In fiery arms Andromeda will take you far beyond the mortal sea of storms/In winter constellations ever wander and never go home'.
This is a typically classical script from one of the outstandingly original writers in rock, the only man ever to work the words 'event horizon' and 'deliquesce' successfully into pop songs. And such music, Fellows doing falling leaves and wintry soul vocals, bathed in the bleak galactic warmth of Andy Peake's swirling keyboard fills. Other rainy mood pieces, like Shiva Descending, feature the prettiest keyboard flourishes you can imagine. Field of Tall Flowers, and Always Near, are uncharacteristically heady nectars of love.
My Mind's Eye, and Beautiful Monster, are contrasting off-the-wall pieces, where Mik Glaisher can be the best drummer in the world (as usual) and Fellows gets to show off that post-Hendrix guitar wizardry.
Topping it all off is an insprired variation on a 1986 piece, Carried Away. This time Fellows makes it as simple and eternal as a child's nursery song: 'As I look upwards at the dreaming sky I can't help thinking sometimes/If you can hear me just tell me so for I'd give anything to know/And all the stars they shine so bright are you out there tonight'.
The lyrics channel familiar introspections of the soul and the 'dreaming sky' has been dreamt before. But the band's unexpected alchemies lend each song an emotional lustre and transcendence rarely heard in rock music.
Sure, the band stuck together for 17 years, but they were so good that you are forever wishing 'just one more time'. Well, that was The Glamour, and it seems there is no more.

Album Description
INSIDE MY MIND'S EYE The new CD from Jim Haptonstahl A powerful journey through the heart to the center of the mind . . . Veteran singer-songwriter Jim Haptonstahl creates a swirling tapestry of sound, evoking images of prairie land and sky-scapes mixed with voyages into deep recesses of the soul. Inside My Mind's Eye winds through complex emotional and psychological territoryfrom escape and alienation to meditation and personal redemption, from anxiety and self-doubt to hope and self-renewal. The title song serves as the central piece of this artful puzzle. Haptonstahl tackles his creative demons while trying to stay connected to those he loves, and to the cosmic forces in his mind. The twelve songs of Inside My Mind's Eye represent a wide sonic spectrum, yet form an organic whole to match with the CD's theme. The music includes a mesmerizing blend of acoustic and electric guitars. Haptonstahl's voice is at once strong and clear, then pensive and earnest. He supports the songs with a broad palette of percussion, lyrical bass lines, and inspired psychedelic effects.
Seven instrumental tracks are featured, including three solo acoustic finger-style compositions, and mixtures of intricately arranged 6-and 12-string guitars, electric guitar, bass, mellotron and eerie soundscapes. Haptonstahl's five vocal tunes are richly layered ensemble pieces, featuring stirring melodies, transcendent harmonies and glistening guitar solos.
The CD is family artistic affair. Haptonstahl's 16-year-old daughter Julia provides accomplished accompaniment on bass for two songs. His brother Max's mind-bending intaglio print serves as the CD artwork. Surreal images interspersed throughout the CD package match the mood of the music.

Take a Trip Inside His Mind's Eye.......2006-02-09
What a trip inside Jim Haptonstahl's Mind's Eye! He brings the listener a sense of harmony mixed with edginess, with side-trips into the subconscious. Fine fingerstyle guitar work on the instrumentals, but also a deft touch with the muted attack on electric guitar, creating flute-like tones in counterpoint lines. Evokes everything from John Renbourn to Jimmie Spheeris to Steve Hackett. But Haptonstahl also stakes a claim to a new and original voice: poetic musings within a dense thicket of reality, with some magic and heart thrown in for good measure.
Sunt Lacrimae Rerum - "There are tears of things".......2005-01-03
This CD album delivers on the promise of its title and the surreal skies of the cover art: introspective but airy, flowing through many complex moods and colors - and stretches of wonderful passion. Tinted with a dark sadness throughout, but always believing in, and hoping for, something wonderful at the root of nature.
First the bad news - the title song was a comparative thud measured against the emotionally driven palette of the rest of the offerings. Plodding in composition and delivery, as though JimHap was taking an emotional breather.
That said, after putting the disk in the player the first time, I played the tracks repeatedly throughout the evening and into the morning... and the next evening. JimHap puts his fingers to the frets in search of beauty, and finds it. His riffs are reminiscent of many influences, from Frank Zappa to Pat Metheny, David Crosby, Leo Kottke, Will Ackerman and, well, Joni Mitchell among others.
I'm familiar with JimHap's work from previous decades, and there's clearly an evolving maturity in his instrumental technique. The voice of the golden youth has acquired an understated quality well suited to the aging child.
This work being vocally a solo effort, I think JimHap would benefit from some help on the harmonies. His backup voice tracks seem to falter sometimes, as though he's worn out from all the emoting on the lead tracks. Get yourself some compatible but contrasting singing voices behind you on the next one, Jimmy! Anyway, I recommend you get this CD. And be prepared to spend some quality time with it!
