5 out of 5 stars Come on--five stars at any convention.......2005-08-15

Please...neither American political party is worth a flinged booger... but the OFF WHITE ALBUM is, and then some... this work of art snuck Miller into the class of George Carlin and Richard Pryor, with Sam Kinnison and Eddie Murphey sliding in as well (Sam's entry into this zone by virtue of one single LOUDER THAN HELL effort and Eddie could have retired after RAW--and possibly should have). Although it is clear that Pryor and Carlin's greatness becomes multiplied by their prolific output each, Dennis remains no slouch. He has also developed a prideful body of work--but nothing that comes close to harking back to his atom bomb--the Thor's hammer of comedy--THE OFF WHITE ALBUM. His rants about the deep south linger like the palate of a fine port. As for Sam, R.I.P., dude--oh OOOOOOH! Still waiting on Chris Rock's masterpiece, but I think he's close. As for the players from Lenny Bruce on back to Vaudeville, that's an argument of era and style better saved for another time, but frankly, I do not recall the need to gasp for air from hearing Henny Youngman one-liners. In the case of Bruce--he's remembered more for being censored than for being funny. I'll take Michael Winslow's grotesque noises or even some perfectly-timed Steven Wright dead pan genius before that ancient stuff, bless their souls. Although Don Rickles had his moments and Myron Cohen's genius was pretty subtle. Also, I am sure Bill Cosby, who is a unique genius, affected more than just Seinfeld. I have to give an honorable mention to that filthy vile freak, Andy Silverstein from NE Philly, er...Andrew Dice Clay from Brooklyn--his 15 minutes of fame floored me into critical condition, viz a viz any episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but that guy flamed hard. I saw him at a small club in Boston in 1994. The unknown opening act was the peak of the evening. Speaking of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Richard Lewis is an underrated comic, but I am still waiting for his masterpiece too. Shouts out to Rodney Dangerfield, David White, Andy Kaufman, Richard Belzer, Josh Brewster, Steve Martin, Christopher Lloyd, Jim Carey, Foster (hiccup) Brooks, Bernard Fox, Red Skelton, Jack Martling, Larry Miller, Gary Shandling, Dick York, Cheech Marin, Yakov Smirnoff, Eugene Levy, Victor Borge, Leon Askin, John Valby, Jerry Seinfeld, Strom Thurmond, Thomas Chong, Howard Caine, and Robin Williams. Aren't there any funny chicks? Maybe Phyllus Diller, Marion Lorne, Agnes Moorehead, and Ruth Buzzy.

5 out of 5 stars Funny As Hell!.......2004-10-31

It's funny how the liberal democrats have got so desperate, they have chosen to grade Dennis Miller's CD on the basis he now has educated himself on the fact liberals could damage this country with there wishy-washy attitude on our security. To quote Dennis, he said "I stopped being a liberal when I got to the point where I wasn't sure about my guesswork." Great line! This is a hilarious CD no matter who he supports. Dennis rules!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dennis Miller - and his best work yet!.......2004-06-02

This 1988 album featuring the wise-guy, smart aleck Dennis Miller is much better than the Rants series, which was spiraling downhill to most people before 'The Rant Zone' in 2001 showed some new promise. Recorded during his SNL days, the crisp delivery and well timed humor of Dennis is perfect here. I wish he would have recorded more albums in the stand up format rather than books on tape that don't have an audience. It makes the listener enjoy the comedy much more. The album sound itself is mixed beautifully and deserves an A+, since many stand up comedy records seem to have to crowd louder than the performer.
If you like Dennis Miller, get this album. Some of the material is a bit dated but it definitely stands up over time and does not make it suffer due to Miller's excellent style.
The CD is only two tracks long, and this is a result of many late 80s CDs not yet being sophisticated to break down a comedy record into multiple topic tracks like they do now. Not a big deal though. It makes you remember the "Side A/B" from the cassette it was originally released on!
5/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Previous Reviewer.......2004-01-27

I'm rating this CD 5 stars simply based on the apparent fact that the previous reviewer seems to have defied the laws of physics by crawling up his own ass. Dennis Miller is hilarious, whether attacking right-wing idealogues, stewardesses, pompous celebrities, or, hell, even left-wing facists (like the previous reviewer) who think comedians are funny only if they toe the liberal line.

4 out of 5 stars Dennis Miller when he was still funny.......2003-11-09

As much as it pains me to recommend anything by a guy who has since morphed into an hysterical, reactionary, completely unfunny right-wing nutjob, this CD is really quite good. This is Dennis Miller when he was sarcastic, witty, and smart; in other words, Dennis Miller before he crawled up W's ... to secure that almighty ditto-head dollar. Unfortunately I'm sure that buying this CD will help to further enrich this disgusting pig, but perhaps if a lot of people buy Miller's older work, he'll realize that pandering to the right isn't winning him any new fans.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nearly Perfect.......2001-05-15

How does he do it? Even with rather home-grown recording and production values, Newell's albums literally sing with spirit, soul and wit. The songs are the shining star here, supported by his somewhat Lennonesque vocal delivery and a slightly world-weary, retired-professorial attitude. "Good Night Country Girl" will probably be the first song to grab you after your initial listen-through, with "Call Me Michael Moonlight", "Miss Van Houten's Cooffee Shop" and "Lions Drunk On Sunlight" likely quick to follow. Nothing fancy, just some pretty good arrangements, decent performances, and work from someone who still sees pop music as a craft worthy to be the logical descendant of traditions purveyed by Shakespeare, Coleridge, Poe, et al, and is capable of living up to that standard. More direct and pure than "The Greatest Living Englishman" but probably equally great.

5 out of 5 stars The Modern Ray Davies.......2001-01-13

Martin Newell went from strength ("Greatest Living Englishman") to strength (this album) in the 90's; no-one chronicles life in modern England like this man. From his castigation of politicians to ruminations on the changing seasons, perhaps only Andy Partridge (XTC) is in his league. Each song is a short story, a true pop symphony; check out "Miss Van Houten's Coffee Shop" for a bit of Beach Boys meet the Move. Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars If Brian Wilson colud choose a new friend for playing........1999-01-09

When I discovered the greatest living englishman I has the same sensation; the elegance and the exquisite pop music.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Colorful classic from Newell.......2003-01-23

Song for song The Off-White album beats the pants off of any release in 2002 (well, with a couple of exceptions)and of 1995. Newell's second "solo" album has been lovingly remastered with bonus tracks. Every song from Call Me Michael Moonlight to the bonus video track of Jangling Man are filled with hooks. Arguably Newell (along with contemporaries Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding and Difford & Tilbrook) is one of the most talented and underdiscovered songwriters of his generation.

The bonus tracks feature Newell reading excerpts from his book Little Ziggy with background music. Are these tracks essential? Well, not really but they provide an interesting glimpse into Newell's world.

Dave Gregory (from Xtc) plays guitar on a number of tracks but the real highlight are the ringing, chiming melodies and Newell's off-beat sense of humor (kind of like Syd Barrett crossed with Andy Partridge with a touch of The Goons)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing stuff (Edit: 4 stars).......2004-12-11

If you're in the market for some nice short post rock/electronic pop music, this is a great EP to get. The best song is easily 'Glisten', which kinda floats by, and every second of it is like being injected with the best ethereal bliss. The end of 'Off White Room' has a cover of 'Computer Love' by Kraftwerk, which is cool.

The only problems with this EP are that 'Project Loop', although a good song, gets easily repetitive because it's basically the same 5 second loop (as the name implies) througout the song; the other problem is that 18 minutes of outdoor noises on the last track is a bit much. Overall, a great EP to satisfy your needs for relaxing post rock.

      5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2003-05-29

In an off white room will make you think about everything and nothing at the same time. It is beautiful and sad. This Cd is full of emotion and if you are a fan of music that makes you think, then this CD is for you. It deserves all five stars and although it only has four songs on it, all of them are amazing.
