Why doesn't Toronto's Bruce Cockburn have the same high-level critical reputation and midlevel cult following as Richard Thompson? After all, they're both dazzling, Celtic-Islamic rock guitar pickers and the writers of vivid if gloomy songs which they deliver in foggy baritones. The big difference is Cockburn's left-wing Christianity, which can be as unrelentingly earnest as Bono's. Cockburn lightens up a little bit on The Charity of Night; he adds Laurie Anderson-like, film noir monologs to four songs and allows nakedly romantic feelings to emerge in two quietly pretty love songs. The prominent presence of bassist Rob Wasserman and vibist Gary Burton give a jazzy elasticity to Cockburn's usual folk rock. Cockburn's reputation among his fellow musicians is reflected in guest appearances by Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, Patty Larkin, Ani DiFranco, and Jonatha Brooke--maybe the public will catch up this time around. --Geoffrey Himes

From the Label
Imagery of night and darkness, shadow and storm pervades Bruce Cockburn's twenty-third album (and first on Rykodisc), The Charity of Night. Held in high regard for his “poetic, innovative, often provocative songwriting,” Cockburn's lyrical introspection sometimes leads him to the more secret corridors of the heart and soul. He also believes that, on this album, he is at something of a turning point. For a man with thirteen gold and three platinum records in Canada, as well as ten Juno Awards (the Canadian counterpart to the Grammy), that's quite an assertion.

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2006-12-04

I have been listening to Bruce for over 20 years and have seen him live 5 times. This is one of my favorites of his. He released several in the eighties that I hold in high regard as well. If you ever get a chance to see him live, by all means do so. He is a virtuoso and someone who respects his audience. I do not understand the celtic and Islamic comments by the editor. Bruce is well known for his Christian beliefs, although he can also be a strong critic of Christianity as it is practiced. I can only assume the editor doesn't know much about him. For the record, although he affects a number of styles, including some blues, his unique guitar style is probably most affected by his formal training in jazz in college.

5 out of 5 stars A virtuoso's masterpiece.......2006-08-20

This is a tour de force. Although I love almost all of Bruce Cockburns albums, and for different reasons -- he embraces change and always seems to be exploring -- this album has a special place in my heart. The concluding song, "Strange Waters", makes the album worth buying for just that song alone. Bruce Cockburn spans the wide range of human emotions; he's truly alive. That turns some people off. He goes places some people don't want to go. But it touches me deeper than words can describe. He is truly a virtuoso.

5 out of 5 stars The culmination of 25 years of incrimental growth........2005-12-20

This is the Bruce Cockburn at his very finest, which is something extraordinary! Cohesive, lyrically stunning, and passionately reverberate. His guitar playing is absolutely unparalled, and this set of deep subversive songs shine brighter with every listen. A true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Starlight Beyond the Darkness.......2005-08-28

The world of Charity of Night seems one of fear and blindness, of mob hits ("Charity of Night") and prison, whether of the heart ("Pacing the Cage") or of metal ("Night Train", "Birmingham Shadows"), of police states and dissidents. But the lyrics and the music itself points to a hope beyond the darkness, although certainly one of Cockburn's intentions is, Brecht-like, to create enough angst in us to not forget that there is a world rife with....well, what shall we call it? Terror? Sin? Bad Guys? beyond our speakers. Bruce is a superb musician and his voice is haunting. A jewel among the Cockburn collection.

5 out of 5 stars had to stop the car.......2005-04-13

A few years back I was driving and had to pull over and stop the car to listen to "Charity of Night" which was playing on an alternative radio station. I wrote down the info, bought it and then just last year lent it to a friend to listen to and never got it back. Now I have to buy it again! It's money well spent and I won't be lending this one out!

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

5 out of 5 stars The Dream Cast.......2007-05-13

The legendary Mandy Patinkin plus the incredible Patti LuPone. Its only a shame that we've been deprived of the complete recording.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Admirer.......2005-08-31

Evita is easily one of my Favorite musicals. Madonna was a better Evita then I thought she would be, but Patti Lupone was amazing as Evita. Her vioce is great!!

3 out of 5 stars Good but not complete.......2005-05-01

This might be a good CD to buy if you are not sure you even like the genre of music, but otherwise go with the complete 2-disk set. They left out some very good songs in 'Highlights'. The extra 10 or 20 dollars spent WILL be worth it,

4 out of 5 stars a subset but worth it.......2004-11-07

The story behind the songs from the play is about Evita Peron, her life and rise to power and demise.
Yes this is a classic from the beginning. This play is one of the, if not the high point for Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Everything comes together to tell of this point in history. The inflections of the singers leave you with the question of who was Evita and does not sway you to any one point of view. The Songs themselves have more of a feel of the time than originals from that time would have.
Being a play and not a movie the singers had to sing and be heard and understood. All of the performers are professionals in their own right; especially Patti LuPone Who has to perform with very little breathing room. She also has a good range and depth. So be sure to look for "1978 Original Broadway Cast"

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Recording.......2004-09-02

This is an excellent recording if you don't want to spend the money on the full set. However, the full set IS worth the money, and is highly recommended. As far as the recorded songs go the selections on this album are superb, and if for whatever reason you decide to go with the highlights album, Patti LuPone will not displease.

The previous poster, however, is absolutely incorrect about the London Cast CD. Elaine Paige is by far the best Evita ever recorded, and that album is worth every penny. It's a shame they never put the full musical from the London cast, because that would be the definitive recording to own. But it doesn't exist, and the London Cast highlights album is the only one available with Ms. Paige. This recording only gets 4 stars because the Ms LuPone simply is not as absolutely stunning as Ms Paige, and hers is the definitive Evita.

And don't even mention the pop singer's name in the company of those two superstars.

        4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2005-09-22

I am a die-hard "Original-Cast-only" person. So when I was given this as a birthday present (a month late) I was kind of skeptical. Yes, it has a wonderful score by Andrew Lloyd webber, and yes the Orlando Pops Orchestra is said to be really good, but it was a studio cast (a term that generally turns me off from asn album). I started listening to this expecting a horrid Eva, off-tempo music, and unrecognisable lyrics.

        I was so wrong.

This is actually a surprisingly good Evita recording. Gail Bartell (Eva) does a very good job of portraying a determined Eva, but some songs could be better. Her voice tends to go slightly off at times, but she is mostly an applause-worthy performer (though her voice does not have the Broadway flair Patti LuPonne of the Premiere American Recording). David Chernauld makes an excellent Che, hitting all the right notes on all the right pitches. Unlike a studio Che I once heard, he is not nasally nor does he sing rather high parts down. Sadly, I must say I was unimpressed with Alan W. Bruun as Peron. Yes, he can sing, but he completely butchers the end of "Charity Concert" (Odd that they didn't call it by the actual song name "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You") and is weak throughout the rest of the CD. Peron should be an inwardly, but not vocally, weak man. The backup ensemble also pleases and I applaud them for being able to do a show like this (even if just a recording) with a cast of eight. It still retains the full ensemble sound that the other albums have, which is wonderful.

The orchestrations are also very well done and I have no complaints towards those. The Orlando Pops Orchestra did a wonderful job, and I will probably buy another of their recordings just for thier excellent sound.

My only qualms with the overall album is the use of "Don't Cry For me Argentina" twice. Was it so hard for them to record something from the opening Requiem? "Oh What a Circus" would have been much better, or at least the opening mourners. Also, at the end of "Balcony-Casa Rosada" the crowd vocals are more annoying than powerful. Not to say they sing it wring, it's jst that that particular moment loses its effectiveness without Eva's speech. They should have just let Bartel record the speech or cut the part. I was also a bit taken aback by the cover art, but I now a see an interesting approach to showing the true nature of the show. The graffiti and ripped poster work very well at showing a post-Peronist Argentina.

in all, I was pleased with this recording. I'm still more partial to the Premiere American Recording with Patti LuPonne, but this CD makes a nice addition to any Evita fan's collection.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Rendition.......2005-04-09

I bought this cd on a whim because it was on super sale, but little did I know that it would prove to be a wonderful addition to my musical theatre collection.

The orchestrations are exquisite and Gail Bartell is a strong Evita. She has both the powerful voice for the mid ranged belting, strong mix for the higher parts in "Buenos Aires" "A New Argentina" and "Rainbow High" and a delicate soprano for "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." She does very well with the belting/mixing of "A New Argentina."
A personal favorite is their rendition of "Waltz for Eva and Che sung by Bartell and David Chenault as Che.

Sure Bartell and Chenualt don't top LuPone and Patinkin's vocal flair, but they fare very well with the material none the less.
