Among the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, these two have always been stepchildren. One reason is their extreme difficulty; both composers were pianists, so Beethoven wrote an idiomatic part only for the piano. Brahms's friend Joseph Joachim offered advice for the violin concerto, but not for the Double Concerto, which was written as a peace offering after a falling-out. The Beethoven Triple Concerto demands utmost virtuosity, as well as intimate teamwork among the soloists, and that is exactly what these three supreme masters of their instruments bring to it. Free--indeed unaware--of technical problems, they give it a joyful, sparkling lightness. The piano ripples, the cello sings gorgeously, the violin soars ecstatically, the tone is intoxicatingly beautiful. The Finale is wistful, charming, lyrical, gently humorous; the ending is a big joke, with the cello and piano rumbling in the bass, while the violin whistles forlornly in the dark until they all join together. The Brahms is grand, majestic, dreamy, radiant, triumphant; the slow movement warm as dark velvet, the Finale genial and relaxed. Though the orchestra never covers the soloists, it explodes in the tutti passages, especially in the Beethoven, so you might keep a finger on the volume control. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
There can't be any better!.......2007-05-17
It is not for the names only.
I think it is a performance as Beethoven probably had in mind.
Wonderful smooth rendition.......2007-04-26
There is something magical about this recording. It is difficult to describe the smooth full sound that this recording presents. I own other recordings of the Brahms and the Beethoven and at first thought it a little extravagent to own another but I am very pleased I bought it.
Beethoven: Triple Concerto; Brahms: Double Concerto / Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Richter.......2007-01-18
I knew this recording and I received what I was expecting. Delivery and condition was great. Thanks.
Beethoven? Brahms? Karajan? Oistrakh? Richter? Rostropovich? Szell? On One CD? Talk About Star Power!.......2006-09-09
All those big names wouldn't mean a thing if the performances themselves were throw aways or showed little commitment, but that's hardly the case, this is probably the finest recordings of both works. Karajan and Richter for one had some rocky interpretative relations in their recording of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto on DG. That was not a great record, where both musical giants pull and push to try and get their way. So yes, in some ways this Beethoven Triple Concerto presents even more challenges because there are four minds, four egos pitted together in one piece of music and that's not counting the greatest ego, Beethoven himself! Luckily everyone melds beautifully together, the three Russian masters are at their best, with Rostropovich a stand out and shining brightly. Meanwhile Karajan, the Austrian master conductor gives them his usual, grand, lush orchestral backdrop via the Berlin Philharmonic. This is warm-hearted, generous music-making between four fearsomely talented musicians.
The Brahms Double Concerto is just as fine, now we have the two string instrumentalists side by side. Oistrakh and Rostropovich communicate wonderfully together in this major Brahms piece. Szell backs them up every step of the way with his precise yet passionate conducting of the Cleveland Orchestra. The EMI recording sounds very good too in both works and the price is quite nice. An outstanding bargain.
Glorious.......2006-01-30
The unbroken tradition of Russian string playing is well-represented on this disc. The Double Concerto is especially wonderful, even rapturous. The two players are beautifully meshed, and Szell and the Cleveland sound warm and emotive, which they sometimes did not, on records and "live". The sessions they recorded for EMI (including a wonderful Dvorak Eighth, far surpassing their recoridng for Masterworks), captured something that often was not well projected.
The remastering captures this warmth, with more brightness than my LP copy of the Brahms ever had, at least after the initial playings.

The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
A piece of heaven.......2006-02-01
Heartland is a haven and a piece of heaven. I was transported.
Great CD.......2004-03-16
Great violin, appalachian music, brings out your country roots, beautiful song by Allison Krauss, good mix of slow and up beat songs, excellent cd!
A bit of a yawn-er.......2003-04-22
If you are planning to open up a high-end gift shop specializing in handcrafted wind chimes and micro-bakery scone mixes and the like, then you must have this CD playing for your customers. It might have a certain appeal there that it did not find in my living room. Not to say that the musicianship is not utterly outstanding, which it is most certainly. Aside from Short Trip Home, which is why I purchased this CD in the first place, I found the rest of the pieces somewhat vapid considering the caliber of the artists. Again, it has its appeal in an easy listening realm, but this was not what I was looking for.
Exquisitely good music!.......2002-05-04
Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played
beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!
Great Music!.......2001-11-09
I drive alot commuting to and from my job. This music has served as the perfect backdrop to an lovely Indiana fall! I'm sure I'll recall those colorful images as I continue to listen to this CD through the colorless days of winter!

Customer Reviews:
A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26
I purchased these recordings nearly 20 years ago, when Deutsche Gramophone was still selling them as five individual discs, and at over $20 per disc. With the re-release of the set of all five discs in a single, price-reduced "Collectors Edition" box set, the price has fallen by more than half, making this one of the outstanding values for high-quality Bach recordings on today's market.
But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.
Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.
A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21
...and cheap to boot. This, paired with the Brandenburg Concertos/Overtures compilation from Arkiv (also featuring Pinnock and the English Concert), gives any new Bach fan a fairly complete account of Bach's instrumental orchestral output. This particular package includes all of Bach's keyboard concertos (played exceptionally well by Pinnock), all of his violin concertos, and also his Triple Concerto (Harpsicord, Flute and Violin), several works for Oboe and Oboe D'Amour, and several double concertos (2 violins, and oboe and violin). Highlights are the D Minor Harpsicord concerto BWV 1052, the C Major concerto for 2 Harpsicords BWV 1061, the Oboe D'Amour concerto BWV 1055, the double concerto BWV 1060, and the violin concertos.
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.
"Best Bach - Box Set".......2005-11-06
This is undoubtedly the best Back box set I have heard. These Concerto's for Harsichord, Violin, Flute and Oboe are among the finest in classical music. Although the Harpsichord volume level could have been a bit higher overall the recordings are very good. I am very pleased with this CD set with so much music at a very good price. This is truly a collectors gem.
Pinnock is good performer.......2005-09-30
Pinnock is good performer...I drop one start because BWV 1052-58
Might sound better when it's played piano.
Unbeatable Value.......2004-12-15
This set offers unbeatable value. The performances are uniformly excellent. Pinnock's Bach is brisk and sprightly when it should be, but also tender and relaxed when it must be. He is not afraid to slow down and savour the music, unlike many period-performance specialists. He is one of the world's great harpsichordists and his partners in the multiple concerti are also excellent. Simon Standage yields nothing to better-known soloists in the violin concerti.
The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.
While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

Customer Reviews:
I love it!.......2007-01-21
I've had this CD for about 6 years now and it never gets old. As the title suggests, it's great for relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine. I find myself reaching for this CD whenever I get a migraine. I had always heard that the complexities of Beethoven's music could ease a migraine, or I suppose any headache. I've never been able to find any substantiated proof of this but from my experience the music eases my headaches. Whether it's psychological is still a mystery to me. Fact is, I love this CD and it's never far from me.
Famous Beethoven slow movements.......2006-01-15
The real Beethoven would probably be irritated with compilation CD's like this that "cherry picks" a variety of slow movements from various works he composed. But, the average listener today will see it as a great way to get to know his music and enjoy an hour of more serene music - less Beethoven's more intense movements. The variery here is broad: solo piano, violin + piano, string quartet and full orchestra symphonies and concertos. The dreamy solo-piano pieces are some of Beethoven's most beloved and alluring slow movements that vaulted him to fame. While these and the chamber music tend to be more "relaxing," the latter orchestral pieces especially contain shifts in tempo, dynamic range and emotion that some might not find so relaxing. After all, this is Beethoven with a full orchestra and not Bach or the Baroque.
But, all is not lost if you are looking for a collection of serene, lyrical music composed by the great Beethoven. There actually is a CD that features some of Beethoven's most endearing and melodic adagios and largos: "Beethoven for Book Lovers" (Philips label). This CD is mostly comprised of the nicest slow movements from Beethoven's ten violin sonatas (violin + piano) played by the legendary David Oistrakh - a violinist with one of the most gentle and beautiful tone ever recorded. Fortunately for those wanting uninterupted peacefulness, there are only a couple of those typical "Beethoven outbursts" in this CD (very brief though). But, overall, the flow and tone of the entire CD is truly relaxing, enchanting and not distracting. All of these works reveal the gentle side of Beethoven and his surprizing ability (for such a fiery composer) to write music of such poinant and tenderhearted emotional appeal. Also, the "Chopin for Relaxation" is one of the better ones in this series and features some of Chopin's slower, more serene solo-piano music and the ever-so lovely middle movements from his two legendary piano concertos.
Number of discs.......2005-03-16
The ad above shows 2 discs with the same track names... this item has only 1 disc with 11 tracks (names as shown above).
I Know Music, and This is Not the Best (by Beethoven Lover).......2005-02-21
Ok, I'll admit, this is a pretty good album, but it lacks the feeling of Beethoven. Its songs don't sound like Beethoven is playing, and its not too relaxing. It deserves three stars because of this lack of the great Beethoven himself. Sure, the songs are pretty, but I'd buy a different album if I was you.
Not the Best By beethoven Lover.......2005-02-20
not completely a delight...shows little Beethoven in it all, deserves only about two or three stars.

If I was a writer/producer, I would want to make a movie out of this elaborate concept album........2007-07-09
I've always enjoyed rock operas, but this is one of my favorites so far. I love the music and how it spans across many genres: Rock, Jazz, Blues, Ragtime, Progressive, Experimental, and other little excerpts that will make you want to rewind mid-track. This will undoubtedly be one of my favorite albums of 2007. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys new and unique music.
Most underrated band around........2007-07-09
Seriously, this may be one of the best things to happen in rock music for years and no one even pays any attention to these guys. They're too busy listening to their Panic! at the Disco songs. The Dear Hunter's writing is so great, and Casey's vocals are just great. He has a great voice and really knows how to use it. He brings in so many influences from so many styles. They even manage to fit a section into "The Lake and the River" that sounds like, for lack of a better term, slave music. Listen to this band right now because stuff this good is hard to come by.
Gives Coheed and Cambria a run for their money.......2007-06-20
74 min. album every second is brilliant! Very complex, very catchy, very progressive. Give it a couple of days for it grow on you, you won't be sorry.
mindblowing.......2007-06-01
I stumbled upon the receiving end of sirens about 2 1/2 years ago and was blown away. I saw them twice live and it was incredible. I was surprised to hear Casey was leaving the band to start The Dear Hunter and couldnt fathom that it could be anything better or more creative than what he did with TREOS. Act I was incredible in itself, but Act II is mindblowing. The album has so many different sounds and instruments. Anything this guy Casey does turns to gold it appears. If you havent heard of this band check them out.
This Band Can Do No Wrong, You MUST Listen To This Album.......2007-05-26
It is so very rare to find a band who, no matter what you listen to, demands respect and at least a polite listen. The Dear Hunter is such a band. Started as the side project of Casey from The Recieving End Of Sirens, The Dear Hunter allowed him to play songs that didn't quite fit their "controlled chaos" sound. The result was two of the most experimental and musically brilliant rock albums created in a very long time (Dear Ms. Leading, and this albums predicessor Act I). This album is a continuation of his musical masterpiece, crossing all generes into such priviously unmixed genres as Ragtime, Jazz, Lounge, Swing, Classical, Latin, and Progressive Rock. Add that kind of musical tallent to Casey's incredible vocals and storyline lyrics and you have Act II. Definately one of the best albums of this year, if not the best. A flawlessly crafted musical experiance, and a must listen for anyone who considers themselves a music fan.

It may have taken until 1991 for punk to break as a commercial form, but the genre was hardly new. In that story, even Jane's Addiction were latecomers to the revolution. But it was the frenzied trailblazing rock of this quirky Los Angeles quartet that made the later successes of Nirvana, etc. somehow inevitable. In this recording of a hometown club gig, Jane's offer raw versions of songs that would appear in a more refined form on their debut album, along with a dubious cover of "Sympathy for the Devil." Hear a noticeably younger and shriller Perry Farrell while guitarist Dave Navarro plays out his Jimmy Page dreams across a punk canvas the rest of the world would soon discover. --Steve Appleford

Great Disk-- case was cracked though.......2007-01-06
I love the group and the disk but I collect and when I pay for new products I don't like to get cracked cases. I just did not want to deal with it thats why I went with a 4. the music is great best J.A. CD i know of.
This Album tells you more than the "Editorial Review".......2005-11-20
Jane's Addiction had the gall and attitude to release their very first EP as a live album. That alone should tell you where this disc is coming from. Unlike what the Editorial would make you think, theres nothing punk about Janes, they've always been the red, raw underbelly of a bizarre experiment with Glam Rock and Psychedelia, and there is no better way to hear them than this live, no coverups or touch ups gem.
I personally tend to HATE live discs as they sound like that bunch of garbage the Hendrix estate has been putting out that were no more than cheap bootlegs, but this disc is nothing of the sort. The first few times I heard this, I had no clue it was live, I thought they were adding crowd sounds to give it a feel, and there isn't much of that. The performance is phenominal, and the mix is amazingly consistent for live disc.
If you love Janes and you don't have this one yet, buy it now. You can kick yourself later.
A Classic Album But Not A Masterpiece.......2005-10-29
I discovered Jane's with their album Nothing's Shocking and it changed my life. I was a devout metalhead at that time and was a huge fan of Metallica( that was the glory days of Metallica). Jane's slowly but surely became my favorite band. I bought this album somtime around 1989 I believe. I love this album it is a really raw sounding record and it shows how powerful the band was at that time. The song that became my favorite and was the main reason I bought the album was the cover of Sympathy for the Devil. Jane's made that song seem very eerie more so than The Stones ever did. Jane's made me realize that music should make you experience the feelings and emotions in the songs. They turned me from a metalhead to an alternative fan for life. Maybe I am being too sentimental or just reacting like most people as they get older but I miss the way the bands were during the years of 1988 till about 1997. Music was fun to me then and I was always discovering new bands to listen to. I find myself going back to listen to my older cd's now and rediscovering all this great music now because I just don't see that many amazing new bands anymore.
Loved It Before Nothings Shocking..............2005-05-07
FIrst came across JA on a comp called "Scream" or something of that nature. Went out and bought this record and thought it was pretty fantastic to say the least and at the time it was. It sounded signifigantly different than anything else at the time and Farrell had one of those voices (like Robert Plant) that would forever mark the band. Then something happened--"Nothings Shocking" was released. SO my point it this after honing their skills and and releasing two classic records this sounds rather novice by comparsion and in actuality it is. The covers (Stones, Velvet Underground)are throw aways (read as: set fillers) however there are hints of the greatness to come, Pigs In Zen, My Time and Trip Away, I only wish they had reworked "My Time" on "Nothings Shocking".
Almost as Essential as Any Album from Jane's.......2005-04-02
A fantastic album, mostly recorded live (I assume there were studio overdubs because I can hear, for example, acoustic and electric guitars being played simultaneously) complete with a small audience of friends and fans cheering them on. Dave Navarro's phenomenal talent on guitar is fully evident and Perry Farrell's sandpaper whine is glorious. Great bass and drums, too. As great as this is, though, they amazingly got better with each album until their masterpiece RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL (their most recent "comeback album" isn't quite up to par but there's some good stuff on it).
Standouts include "Whores," "Pigs in Zen," and the surprisingly sweet "I Would for You." Another highlight is the reworked, semi-acoustic version of the Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil." Navarro's electric guitar at the end sounds downright eerie, and Farrell sounds like evil personified. "Chip Away" closes out the album with intense tribal drumming and tripped-out guitar effects. Intense rock n' roll I have yet to get sick of after many years of listening.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Bach for Relaxation.......2007-03-09
This is a great CD of instrumental Bach music. I listen to it very often
Peaceful and Beautiful.......2002-11-01
I have purchased this CD twice, first for myself to listen to during labor and secondly for a friend who has a new, very stressful job. I love the music on this CD, it is wonderfully played and listening it to it during labor was very helpful and uplifting. Now both my daughter and I enjoy listening to it, and during fussy days it calms her down a bit, which is very nice. The music truly brings on a serene feeling without making one sleepy, which means its great for anytime you just need to relax yet stay alert. I'll be giving it to my friend for the holidays, and I'm sure she'll love it as much as we do.
Bach to knit up your raveled sleeve of care.......2001-12-19
What better way to begin 'Bach for Relaxation' than with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." This CD is not dumbed-down Johann Sebastian Bach just because it advertises itself as relaxation music (which was my initial fear before purchase). Good orchestras and soloists perform the nineteen well-chosen chamber works, ranging from the deceptively simple "Prelude in C" from "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1" (Sviatoslav Richter, piano) to selections from the powerful Brandenburg Concertos.
This is Bach in his most serene, mathematically perfect form. None of his mighty organ or choral works will disturb your contemplative mood as you drift through the sixty-eight minutes of this CD.
I'm usually asleep by track fifteen, the adagio from "Concerto for Flute, Violin & Harpsichord BWV 1044."
Another very good CD in this 'relaxation' series from BMG RCAVictor is "Cello for Relaxation."
My favorite..........2000-11-21
This is one of my favorite classical CD's. It is a composition of soft, calmer Bach, and is perfect for almost any occassion. This is a great CD for first time classical listeners or long time fans ... It functions as perfect dinner background music, or to listen to alone. I highly recommend this compilation of Bach.
Wonderful for baby!.......1999-12-04
We received this as a baby gift and it has been a godsend. Our newborn relaxes to the sound of this when nothing else works. We also love it for ourselves; the CD contains the best of Bach's less fiery works, and the musical interpretation and recording quality are outstanding.

Album Description
Electronically enhanced hard rockin' in the vein of Hot Rod Circuit meets The Refused. Their unique sound, sharpened by producer Matt Squire (Northstar, Thrice), recreates the boundaries of the genre. They have a hearty appetite for touring and a face-melting live show.
Customer Reviews:
Best CD Ever.......2006-10-18
They are unlike any other band. Don't even worry about what 'genre' they fall into. The Receiving End of Sirens rocks.
pinnacle of everything that is modern "emo".......2006-09-27
the pinnacle of everything that is modern "emo", although i know that tag is misleading and incorrect (see: coheed, funeral for a friend, probably a dozen bands on mtv2, etc). soaring, strong melodies over top of slick drumming (with occassional aid of electronics) and sweet guitar licks. the band is clearly influenced by radiohead and genesis as much as they are fugazi and quicksand. very unique outing that serves both as a milestone of whatever scene some might lump them in and as the album that would make people shake the predominant view that all "emo" is uninspired, boring, and melodramatic.
Stands out and above the emo label bestowed upon it..........2006-09-18
These days, being emo is what's in but knowing emo is unfound. There are different styles of music that could all be associated with the emo label, and it could be said that emo's best days are behind them as bands try to emulate a sound that has grown tired and lacking fresh ideas.
The Receiving End of Sirens is a band that is thrown into today's mix, but they have the most diverse, powerful, and emotional sound out there. They combine elements of progressive, hardcore, punk, and metal to create something so involving and compelling that it's unlike anything considered emo nowadays. To rate this album song by song will be a disservice to the progression the listener experiences. This is not an album with filler or no direction. It is clear yet complex, optimistic while tormented, and imagined despite the reality.
It's quite amazing how a band who quietly opened a show for Saves the Day in Philadelphia would turn out to be the most inventive band we've seen from the genre in years. I don't know how they'll follow up this album but I'll be intrigued to find out. If you haven't already listened to them, you are definitely missing out on the most sensational debut I heard in 2005. Pick up Between the Heart and the Synapse and you will definitely not regret it.
For fans of Jimmy Eat World.......2006-08-11
Call it what you will... Emo/Alt/Indie Rock with heavy guitar? I don't know what the kids are calling it these days, but whatever it is, it's good. However, I do have that nagging feeling at the back of my head that makes me feel like TREOS are just copying what Jimmy Eat World successfully accomplished with "Clarity" and "Static Prevails" before they sold their souls to the Pop-Machine on "Bleed American" and then made their unimpressive effort "Futures" (what I call "The Lullabye" album). This is a good replacement for Jimmy Eat World... but nothing new or innovative. Excuse me while I go listen to "Robot Factory"...!
What a debut!.......2006-08-01
I'll go ahead and say this right away. This is a really, really good album.
For a debut, BTHATS is nothing short of amazing. Every song is crafted so pefectly. Some standout tracks for me are:
Planning a Prison Break
...Then I Defy You, Stars
This Armistice
Broadcast Quality
The Rival Cycle
Epilogue
Even "Intermission" is a great song. The CD's awesome from beginning to end. Recommended to everyone with ears.

Still getting a visceral kick from the simple thrill of hearing their own amplified voices on tape, the members of L7 kick off their fifth album with a mike check-"Yo! Hello! Hey!"-followed by two ear-shattering screams. The Los Angeles quartet has always had a hard time being heard for exactly what they are: a great punk-metal band, as opposed to a great female punk-metal band. But the group doesn't waste any more time making that point on The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum than it has on its previous four albums, choosing instead to get right to the business of making your eardrums ring. L7 suffered a key defection before this album when bassist/vocalist Jennifer Finch quit, frustrated perhaps by a decade of hard touring that has won a cult following and not much more. But guitarists/vocalists Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner rose to the occasion with producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, the Muffs). They tip the balance a bit more toward the metal end of the spectrum in terms of stomping rhythms and slower tempos (though not extraneous guitar solos), while excluding none of their usual so-stupid-they're-brilliant Ramones-style hooks. The subject matter will be familiar to fans: Sparks and Gardner bitch about loser boyfriends and other "Bad Things," celebrate their status as bad girls by jumping "Off the Wagon," show their romantic streak on the touching '50s-style "Moonshine," and paraphrase the voracious Iggy Poo on "I Need" and "Must Have More." Sadly neglected in a pop landscape dominated by lightweights like Alanis Morrisette and Sheryl Crow, L7 can be forgiven for being bitter and questioning the IQ of the populace at large with a song called "The Masses Are Asses," especially because the moment is a fleeting one. Ultimately, the band is about partying hard and rocking yourself silly, and it's your loss if you decline their invitation. Jim Derogatis

Good Album.......2007-01-09
Classic L7. If you dig their other albums you should dig this.
Worth more than platinum, even in the current rare-metals market.......2006-01-27
This, tied with Slap-Happy, is my favorite L7 album. I dont think there is another band in the world that has had the comic sense of L7, which includes their musical talents and playing off of musical cliches: take the BTO "Takin Care of Business" musical pun from "Masses are Asses"..."the masses are asses, everyday. The masses are asses, in everyway. Woo-Hoo."
I cant think of L7 without thinking of the British novelist Fay Weldon (The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, Shrapnel Academy, Cloning of Joanna May): they each have a uniquely comic and critical view of the world.
they have done much better..not bad..more like 3 stars.......2005-11-29
I used to own this album and i must say, it is a rather stale/boring piece compared to "hungry for stink" and "bricks are heavy."...if you are an L7 die hard, well of course this is recommended!! as for me, i personally can recommend about a hundred other cds to purchase before this....it does have its moments though...songs like "drama" are pretty good..i mean nothing to go crazy over, but are worth a listen...get this cd last out of all L7's if at all.
The Best in Metal grunge music!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-31
I don't really like this band anymore because I have made a radical life change over the years and I just don't listen to this type of music anymore. But I still had to get on here and give this band some respect. These girls freaken rock, and even though there lyrics aren't quite the best, I've heard a lot worse on the mainstream radio. The don't sugarcoat anything at all. They tell it how they see it through their eyes. The basic fact is, these girls know how to jam. There is no other band that does it quite like them. They'll go down in my musical history books.
"Must Have More" L7........2004-02-25
I gotta say, I thought the 3 albums before this were so great, they couldn't do it again. I was wrong. This disc is just as good as the ones before it, and probably most like "Hungry For Stink". Almost every track is sweet, and typical "L7", so I won't list them off. The rocking and subject matter are what you would expect from them. What I'm most amazed at, is how much these chicks rock, yet they never got more popular than they did in the "Bricks Are Heavy" era. But I guess they said it best, the "Masses Are Asses". Maybe they'll release a collection soon.
