Prairie Funk.......2000-11-18
I'm not going to lie to you, folks. When I gave Wide Mouth Mason's "Stew" a spin, I was more than a little surprised. Gone was the raw blues of the band's self-titled debut, gone was the over-production of the follow-up "Where I Started." In it's place was a tight little groove record laced with a groove so well-entrenched, the listener's toe taps out the rhythm well after the CD has stopped. "Stew" is produced by Big Sugar frontman Gordie Johnson; it's lead single was the hopeful "Smile." To paraphrase Johnson, "The first two albums were full of music that made the listener shake his head; this album is full of music that makes the listener shake his booty." Wide Mouth Mason draws its influences from an array of artists ranging from Stevie Wonder to Stevie Ray Vaughan, but the band never strays far from its Saskatoon roots. In fact, the album was nearly named "Prairie Funk" with a tip o' the cap to The Guess Who's "Wheatfield Soul." One of Canada's best kept musical secrets has taken its world-class talent and wrapped it into a tight ball, which visually might resemble the image displayed on the disc itself. A taste of "Stew" will have you hooked.

Rock on.......2002-10-10
This is an incredible CD of Blues/Rock eclectica. Three obscenely talented Canadian guys that blow me away every time I see them live. The tracks feel big, and the soundscape is brilliant...always makes me move.
taste is back in music.......2000-07-19
I recently visited friends in Kitchener Canada and one of the family members there played this cd for me.Needless to say I can't get enough of there music now.I have to have friends bring there cd's back from Canada because I can't find them anywhere in the states.Wide Mouth Mason has given me hope for a dying industry of tasteless music and repetitive chords that tend to go nowhere. This is an all around talented group that must be heard in any form you get the chance to hear them in.
AMAZING! FANTASTIC!.......1999-08-29
Absolutely amazing band... Have seen them live often, and am always blown away! This CD is packed full of great tracks, and will never end up as a coaster.
Great band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-04-12
They are truly a great band. I first saw them open up for the Rolling Stones, back in February, and thought they were good. I recommend this cd, even if you don't like the weird name of the band. But they are growing very rapidly in Canada.
Astonishing.......1999-03-24
Saw Wide Mouth Mason in a little club in Buffalo, NY late 1998. One of the most astonishing concerts I have ever seen. This band is a well kept secret in the USA but growing fast in Canada. This CD is great, the new CD even better but you must see them live!

Good, but not as great as previous works.......2003-11-06
Having grown up in the Canadian prairies, I have to say that I am a little partial to any band that comes from Saskatoon. So it's fair to say that I am biased towards Wide Mouth Mason. The fact of the matter however is that they are a really good Band. Shaun has got some amazing guitar and vocal talents, and Earl and Saf are a very groovy and tight rhythm section.
I'm not however, overly-impressed with the latest album. It's good, rhythmically together, and very well formed music, but maybe I'm trying to compare it too much to their self-titled debut, which is one of my all time favorite albums.
A little bit of the band's history...
Earl, Saf, and Shaun grew up together, attending the same high school in their hometown of Saskatoon. Having played together in various incarnations since 1993, they finally settled into the present trio, officially forming Wide Mouth Mason in 1995.
I could go on about the specific points about what I liked and what I didn't like, but you realy have to hear it for yourself. I'll just say that although I feel it was weaker that their first album, it's at least on par, if not better than the last two.
Surprisingly good !.......2003-04-17
I never thought I'd see this day ! Wide Mouth Mason releases an excellent album ! I don't mean their first 3 albums were bad, they were alright. It's just that I always found Wide Mouth Mason's albums to be a mix of good and average songs. How I was surprised when I listened to Rained Out Parade and found a lot more excellent songs and a lot less average songs ! Yes, how indeed !
The band has never sounded better. Someone might have already said this, but there is great guitar on here. Some similar to what they're used to do, some a lot harder than what I've been used to. I've heard people say this sounds like grunge. They may be right, whatever, I think this records just rocks big time. Oh, and Shaun Verrault's vocals never sounded so good. He is surprisingly (did I mention I was surprised yet?) versatile here. He rocks straight on My New Self but turns it down quite a bit on 40 Watt Moon. This brings me to my next point, there is variety on this record. There is no mistaking, this is a Wide Mouth Mason album, but they seem to experience a bit more than before. This is especially obvious on Come Out to Play which, it seems, the band just had a good time recording.
So what about the other songs ? Well, there's Bootleggin' that starts the album with a blast, there's My New Self that resembles the rocking A Man Destroys from Portable, there's Lagavulin (great ballad)... I'm not going to name them all but I'll point out the right-away-catchy songs : Rained Out Parade, Come Out to Play and O. Always, Never, Only is also worth mentionning since it's the best ballad on the album. I always close my eyes when Shaun sings these lines : "I can't be with someone whose idea of a parade is to walk through a room and stare at every shiny thing." Finally, there's the beautiful 40 Watt Moon that closes the album.
Ok, two minor complaints about this album. First, some of the songs are not up to the ones I mentionned and grow old quickly. I'm talking about Puppet in a Clown Show or Dry You Up. But, like I said, this is a minor detail and shouldn't stop you from listening to this album. Second, the hidden "track" is way, way, way too long. Well, it's not really a track, it's just the sound of rain dropping. It might be soothing for some people, but it's not to me. I like rain, but I like it real. I don't need the sound of virtual rain dropping for about 20 minutes. But, again, minor detail.
So there it is. I'd just like to say great job to the artists for the very pretty cover art. And don't forget to stand up for yourself : "I can't forgive you just so you know / I can't forgive you maybe my old self would / my new self won't."
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout........2003-02-09
All I can say is- what an amazing album, as usual. For anybody who loves great guitar solos and a lot of slide, this is a must have album. And you can't forget the 27 minute long hidden track that really clarifies the album's title. Everybody go buy it! You won't be disappointed. ;) for more info; go to: www.widemouthmason.net
Great disc.......2002-10-16
Shaun Verrault has a lot of energy on stage, and it shows up in this album. Lots of diverse tracks with great guitar work, which always sounds big. It is hard to believe that only 3 guys are playing.
Now this is better.......2002-10-02
I loved their first album - a smash hit in Canada. But their follow up efforts were disappointing. This new release brings them back to their roots. Although not as "sharp" or diverse as their debut, it is packed with really great tunes. Great guitar work, great vocals. There is a lot of talent in this band and this latest release should bring them the recognition they deserve. I can't recommend this highly enough!! Did I mention great guitar work? Turn it up!!

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly underrated band rocks out and survives hard times.......2005-09-11
This new Wide Mouth Mason album is absolutely fantastic. It starts off with four super-high-energy songs that are highlighted by some thick, revved-up slide guitar. This is the signature Wide Mouth Mason sound, but a lot more straight ahead and energetic than we're used to. Those first four tracks are awesome. Don't get me wrong, the rest is as well, but the energy and that ferocious slide guitar on the opening four is completely contagious. I haven't taken this CD out of my car in the week that I've had it. BUY THIS CD, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Now for the problems (not with the music of course!). In an age where image rules over substance it is obvious that this band has been constantly struggling to keep their heads above water. They've been through the wringer that is the Canadian music industry. It doesn't matter how good you are. These guys have been improperly marketed for years under their former "record company", Warner Music. This horrendous label tried to market them as a hip-hop act and a teeny-bopper act, among other things. This has left them with an admittedly loyal fanbase, but also one that is small and mostly comprised of prude young girls and effeminate males. Completely the wrong audience for a jammy blues-rock band that sings about smoking pot and one night stands (among other things of course!). In order to survive these guys NEED to get their music to the American jamband fans that will embrace and really appreciate their music. They need to play jammy festivals such as the Bonnaroo festival and really penetrate that scene. A tour opening for Ben Harper in the US would be exactly what these guys need. Or perhaps a stint with The Black Crowes, warming up the stage for the bros Robinson in the marijuana smoke filled auditoriums they play for beer drinking, magic mushroom swallowing, hallucinating audiences. That is where Wide Mouth Mason needs to be, and until they find somebody who can open these doors for them I'm afraid they will never get the recognition that their music so rightly deserves.
This CD is awesome. Keep playing that slide Shaun!
i'm sure it will grow on me but..........2005-09-09
WMM are one tight little rock outfit let me get that out right away. Also they are one of my favourite Canadian bands and have been since their debut.
However, their first two albums I liked instantly, their third I had to get used to (a little over produced and commercial sounding than the others). Then came Rained Out Parade with it's killer lead track. I had to put it away for awhile and come back to it but came to love it as well.
I am finding the same with this new release. The playing is as tight and rocking as ever, songwriting seems to be strong. You know what the difficulty has been for me? Well, I'll tell ya (thanks for asking)...it's Shaun's voice. He has an amazingly versatile voice that can do rock, ballads, blues, funk equally effectively. However, I keep waiting for his voice to mature and leave that high pitched, nasal sound and instead he seems to be using it more and more.....and more.
I gave it 3 stars because i like the album, i just don't love it - yet. With repeated listening, i'm sure that it will grow on me but that's what i think at present time (for what it's worth).

Absolutely Perfect.......2000-07-24
From start to finish, this is a stellar recording. Building on the success of their debut CD in 1997, this rock group from Canada rises to a level that may only exist with established bands. Released in Canada as "Where I Started", you can listen to the first track (and first single) "Why" and continue to be mezmerized as they come one after the other and before you know it the CD is over, tho you will not mind hitting play again. There are only a few CDs in existance where every single track is a pure joy to listen to - this is one of those CDs. The cohesiveness of this CD is phenomenal. All tracks are recommended listening written by all three members of the group. However, must listens are "Companion (Lay Me Down)", "Half A Chance", "Crystal Ball" and "Sugarcane". Lead singer Shaun Verreault is a knock-out. He sinks his chops into every lyric and it doesn't sound forced or over-the-top. Simply put, this band rocks. Both the CD and the group are woefully underrated, a fact that should be remedied with a new recording to reinforce how good these guys are. A must have for your CD collection.
