Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

I was hesitant to pick up this album so I did what smart person would do. I got a friend of mine who had that album to make me a copy. Im mad that even heard the album at all! Loyalty was proof that Fat Joe was going to stay pop for life. This album further proves that point correct. Decent tracks:MY FOFO(okay 50 cent diss), LEAN BACK REMIX, SAFE 2 SAY, TEMPTATION part1 and BEAT NOVACAINE. Filler: So Hot, So much more(awful beat), I can do you(gay song with a gay beat), Temptation part2, Intro, does anybody know, get it poppin(wack Nelly Collabo) and the rest of this album. Fat Joe is pop now so dont be surprised when you hear that his next album is even worser than this one. One last note: somebody PLEASE tell Dre from Cool and Dre to stop trying to rap. Dude is Nick Cannon JR!

This album is terrible to put it simply. There are a few highlights such as the Lean Back remix but that's mainly due to the presence of Em & Mase. I'm surprised Em didn't realize how terrible Fat Joe is and am surprised he's actually do a song with him. But overall this album is bad, he thinks he can outdo 50 and the G Unit crew but he doesn't stand a chance. [...]

Fat Joe, after being shot down by an overated diss from 50, came back. "All or Nothing" impressed me with the various styles in beats. You know, lyrically he killed it. The commercial songs; So Much More was nasty no matter what style you like. Get It Poppin, aaaa, not my favorite but hey if the women like it... The beats, from Beat Novacane and Just Blaze were nice. Alot of people like My FoFo, it was decent, could've been better. Album Description

Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.

The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."

This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.

If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.

...Absolutely perfect!

As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.

The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!

I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!

If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. I first heard John Dowland's lute music many years ago as a classical guitar student, thought it, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Spanish repertoire the cream of the music for the guitar - and still feel mostly that way. But it was awhile before I was able to find recordings of Dowland's music.

Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.

Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.

There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.

Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)

Strongly recommended.

This one's a winner. The music of Dowland is eternal. The lute playing and recording here is peerless. The Amazon review is right on. I'm not such a lute fan, but I return to this CD often. I want more from lutenist Ronn McFarlane! Bravo to all involved here.

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

After the embarassing "Liquid Dreams", a track which I both love and hate, scarily at the same time, the O-Town boys followed it up with a smash ballad "All Or Nothing". This single was limited, and was well packaged, containing some bite size dance edits, a live track, and the third single as a bonus track. While I probably would have enjoyed the full length mixes more, the edits do quite nicely, with HQ2 & Mike Rizzo both turning out juicy remixes of the ballad, and the former pulling double duty on a dance take of "Liquid Dreams". A big highlight is the shockingly good live version of the Jacob Underwood penned album track "Take Me Under". One of their catchiest songs in my opinion, I'm amazed a live version actually sounds as good as it does. The final track is actually the third single from the band, a midtempo track with a summertime vibe, "We Fit Together" is another great O-Town single. A great boy band release.

This song is absolutely beautiful and has the sweetest lyrics. I can totally relate to the message in this song.

I can't believe how gorgeous the voices of the members of O-Town sound in this song. They blend really well and have great harmony!

The 1st remix on the CD actually sounds okay, but it's kind of weird to hear a ballad turned into a dance song. I mean, if it ain't broke, why fix it?

The 2nd is more like a pimp's type thing, and not a good one, in my opinion. It makes it sound really stupid. I would hate to know that I ruined a song that was totally beautiful--which is how the guys of O-Town must feel, if they have any musical sense.

The Liquid Dreams remix sounds pretty good. Of course, I don't exactly like this song. It's really perverted in my POV, but it's got a good beat.

Take Me Under is kind of shallow. I don't really like it. It makes them sound way too whiny. Ugh, they could've left it off.

We Fit Together is yet another song that I strongly dislike. I think this single would be better without some of these songs, such as WFT, TMU, and the 2nd remix of AoN.

Being a big O-Town fan, when I saw this while shopping about a month ago, I naturally decided to buy it. I love "All Or Nothing" and was eager to hear the new song "We Fit Together". I was amazed just how great the mixes of "All Or Nothing" are. I especially love track 2, The HQ2 Mix. It's really relaxing and has almost a water sound...hard to explain but you'll understand when you listen to it. Anyway...the highlight of this awesome disk is "We Fit Together". The beat is fantastic and the song itself is just really catchy. It's a fun song, good to dance to, and reminds me of summer-time..my favorite O-Town song thus far. I'm not usually one to buy singles, but I'm glad I decided to buy this one..and by looking at all the great 5 star reviews, you'll see I'm not the only one who loves this! If you don't already have it, buy it...you'll be happy you did!

Being a big O-Town fan, when I saw this while shopping about a month ago, I naturally decided to buy it. I love "All Or Nothing" and was eager to hear the new song "We Fit Together". I was amazed just how great the mixes of "All Or Nothing" are. I especially love track 2, The HQ2 Mix. It's really relaxing and has almost a water sound...hard to explain but you'll understand when you listen to it. Anyway...the highlight of this awesome disk is "We Fit Together". The beat is fantastic and the song itself is just really catchy. It's a fun song, good to dance to, and reminds me of summer-time..my favorite O-Town song thus far. This Cd is the best Cd i have ever listened to!?! All Or nothing is my fave song out of them all. If you were thinking about buying the Cd i highly recommend it!?!
