Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. Everywhere on Icky giant riffs leap and shout, with Flamenco horns and those eerie bagpipes and rhythmic shifts and Jack's impatient vocal kinetics, marking new territories even as the White Stripes again populate them with vintage ideas. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

The White Stripes are back with the most bombastic album they've ever produced! While revealing the band's roots in American folk music, Icky Thump is an explosive, revolutionary assault that brings together garage rock, every blues style of the past 100 years, nouveau, and flamenco. This is truly a modern rock and roll masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars White stripes a homer.......2007-07-13

The new Icky Thump album by the White Stripes delivers the hard driving music and lyrical verse we now expect from Jack. The two person band delivers a tower of sound and driving rhythm throughout the CD. My favorite is the biting "You don't know what love is" which is a Dylanesque rocker with the bite of positively fourth street. The percussion is great and the variety of music created by this duo continues to amaze. Stripers will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but ..........2007-07-12

The White Stripes have never made a bad disc, but I don't find anything hugely groundbreaking here. After Jack White's diversions with The Raconteurs and Loretta Lynn, I thought the Stripes might start taking some more chances, and there are a few here such as the bagpipes and the "ancient" synthesizer. Any other band and I would have given this CD 5 stars, but knowing how much the White Stripes are capable of vs. what appear here and four is the most I can give.

5 out of 5 stars They're back in Red, White and Black.......2007-07-12

After Get Behind me Satan (which I found to be a slightly disappointing follow-up to Elephant) I was worried that The White Stripes wouldn't be able to redeem themselves. They said the album was written in just around two weeks and Jack White had also been busy with The Raconteurs. The album, however doesn't disappoint. It is fully enjoyable from start to finish with Little Cream Soda through the last track being a medley of some of their best songs ever. It is personally my second favorite White Stripes Album.

2 out of 5 stars aaaaaak.......2007-07-12

i have all the white stripes' albums since their debut "the white stripes". i'm 20. the white stripes were kinda the band that made me realize "what rock music is", so i have been holding them in high regard for a long time.

but somehow, icky thump is the first album of theirs which hasn't made me very happy.

these are all IMO only.

i. it's missing the rawness of the first album, "the white stripes". 'jimmy the exploder' and 'when i hear my name', those songs made me stop whatever i was doing, and go "WHOA".

ii. de stijl is original [and the cover of 'death letter', makes the whole cd cool].

iii. i like white blood cells. it's pretty. the brink before the phenomenal fourth album, 'elephant' [from WBC, 'dead leaves & the dirty ground', 'hotel yorba', 'fell in love with a girl' - such lovely, simple, classics].

iv. 'elephant' is a good introduction cd to the white stripes. i believe though, that icky thump doesn't quite measure up to elephant's polish.

v. 'get behind me satan' was more of a creative venture, and while it wasn't my personal fav, i appreciated the experimenting that went on. maybe this is a bit like what nirvana did with 'in utero', though i think that was a much fiercer, aggressive rebuttal to commercial success.

vi. and so, 'icky thump'. white stripes songs that are more than 3 minutes long. i think songs with a time limit worked in their favor. guitar riffs that don't really pack the same punch as the orgasmic solo in 'ball & biscuit'.

the album seems to lack the pure all-out rock magic which i've liked in the white stripes for a long time. that lack of a "formula"...that lack of cares for "safe" music. though if this is the direction they'll be taking, it saddens me quite a bit that they 'might not (really) know what to do', now that they've found themselves 'in a bigger room'...

2 out of 5 stars Tiresome .......2007-07-11

First, if all you've heard of rock up to this point is stuff like the White Stripes, Coldplay, Radiohead and other contemporary bands than this album will probably sound fresh and cool and it would be pointless to read my review. But, if you expect a little bit more from your rock and roll than the same old sh#@ this review is a buyer beware....

Tiresome is a word I never thought I would put to a White Stripes album, but I find it the most natural word to express my impression of Icky Thump. I was surprised how many rock cliches I heard on his side project with The Raconteurs and thought perhaps because it was a band effort that once he got back into the saddle with as The White Stripes all that bombastic artiness would return, but no!

Icky Thump has really poor melodies and the lyrics are some of the worst this side of Paul McCartney ala Red Rose Speedway.

The best moments of the album which there are very few come in songs like A Martyr For My Love For You and the catchy Icky Thump. But overall this is just a big disappointment from a man that is capable of much more.

Get Behind Me Satan was a pretty good album but it marked a departure from the other White Stripes albums because it sounded like Jack White was expanding his sound, after the awful Raconteurs album and this Icky Thump it sounds more like it was an failed attempt to escape his own success.

Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

3 out of 5 stars 2 out of 4 just doesn't make SP.......2007-07-13

I want to say I love the new SP but it just doesn't sound nor feel like the SP. Billy is great writer but he should of tired harder to get the hole band or 3 of the 4 together. now with that said.. I do like Zeitgeist but it could of been much better! I think a lot of the bands now days are just not trying anymore. money rocks all!

4 out of 5 stars Not Siamese Dream but still pretty damn good........2007-07-13

For as long as I've been a fan of rock music I've listened to the Smashing Pumpkins. I'm quite sure that no album(s) will ever replace Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie as my all-time favorites. Even Adore, which was not so popular among the groups long time fans, I'd rather listen to then most any other bands albums. So I guess I'm biased, but I was not disapointed with this CD. It is more like Machina than any other of the Pumpkins work, though there seems to be less keyboard. The guitar work and music editing is very solid, and Billy sounds just like Billy. Some songs are very good: Doomsday Clock, That's the Way, Tarantula, Neverlost, in particular stand out. United States is an interesting track, can't decide whether I like it or not yet. The new band members seem to do a pretty decent job in general, although it's not like D'arcy or James ever had much of an impact in the recording process. It really is and has always been Billy's band, and this is a pretty good record for the most part. Other than 30 Seconds to Mars I can't say I'm a big fan of any of the alternative/rock (or Metal if you will) that has come out in the last few years. That being said I'd rather keep this in my cd player than turn on the radio. All in all, I like the disc a lot but don't love it even as a huge Corgan fan

3 out of 5 stars Better than what's out there..........2007-07-12

But unfortunately that's not saying a lot. Comparing it to other SP works this one hovers near the bottom, just ahead of Machina. Yes, I had high expectations. No, they were not met. The album was over-produced, with pointless dubbed harmonies added throughout. They really become irritating after a while. Most of the rhythm guitar parts were predictable, repetitive, and unimaginative by SP standards. Perhaps with less production, the raw guitars and Billy's voice would have added some energy to this average/mediocre album alas this is not the case. Still my favorite band of all time. It's just unfortunate that they couldn't come back on a better note.

2 out of 5 stars Another Crappy Comeback Album.......2007-07-12

I listened to the whole album and I only remember Tarantula because its played on the radio so many times. No memorable riffs or choruses. It all just kind of bleeds together into blah. Pretty much what I expected though. Almost all comeback albums suck. Add this one to the list.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible according to Corgan standards.......2007-07-12

Forget about the different band members, bands change line-ups all the time. The only problem is that with this band, the other members weren't even part of the recording process. Almost all the songs on Zeitgeist are average "rock" songs. They all sound as if Corgan forced himself to write these heavy riffs and lackluster lyrics. It is a great album compared to the other [...] rock music that is out there today, but it doesn't even come close to what Billy has done in the past, which is what I am basing this review on. I suggest you spend your 15 bucks somewhere else, this album is [...].

Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

Amazon.com

Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

5 out of 5 stars This new fan says stickin to your guns ain't so bad.......2007-07-13

I guess my ears must be broken, because Spoon's new album has been getting hot press, but it doesn't engage me at all. Meanwhile, Interpol's buzz has been quieter, but I think this one blows Spoon out of the water. This is also my first proper Interpol album, for what that's worth.

The single, "Heinrich Maneuver" doesn't do much for me, but the rest of the album is more adventurous and compelling (while not substantially altering their sound, however). I wish I could give this 4.5 stars, because it's only mostly awesome. The production is also quite good, with clear vocals and distinct instruments. Whoever engineered the sound knows what he or she is doing. Meticulous separation.

What I like most about the band is its unpredictably. They go in directions I don't expect a "rock" band to go, indie or not, and their passion is infectious. This is an album that makes me feel, and music doesn't do that as often as it should. There are some real gems here, and I the album as a whole grows on me with each listen. There's a certain enigmatic nature about some of the songs, and some great melodies and verses. I think "Pace Is the Trick" is my favorite, if I had to pick one, with the opener coming in close behind.

Also, if you like this album, I recommend Boxer by The National. Very similar mood.

3 out of 5 stars I Love Interpol, but don't Admire the album this time around.......2007-07-13

well, I've waited for this album for three years and to tell you the truth, I'm a little disappointed. Interpol is by far my favorite band these days, but for me this major release debut is a let down. there are a few bright stars on the album (Rest my Chemistry-one of their best songs ever!, Pioneers to the Falls-love this one too!, Mammoth, and The Heinrich Maneuver. The rest, i can flip through and not miss. No I In Threesome and Pace Is the Trick are alright but just aren't catchy enough. don't get me wrong, i like the fact that its a little darker than the previous release but i was expecting it to be better. oh well, better luck next time.

3 out of 5 stars I miss the Bright Lights.......2007-07-12

I have tended to like the more kinetic Interpol songs (Obstacle 1, Say Hello to the Angels, P.D.A., Slow Hands, Evil) with a few exceptions (NYC, The New, Next Exit), so unfortunately, this album does not really deliver the goods. At their worst, Interpol is laborious and plodding, and the down beat places more musical emphasis on Paul Bank's lyrics - which is not a good thing. For the most part, Interpol seems to be at or near their worst on this album. At least it has me listening to Bright Lights again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing but different.......2007-07-12

The album sounds a little different, but after a few listens it definitely grows on you. This album is definitely on the same level as Turn On The Bright Lights. I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Number 3 with a Rocket!.......2007-07-11

No, INTERPOL does not break any major new ground with this release.

Is that a bad thing? Not at all.

Interpol has truely come into its own sound and OLtA is a tight set of tracks that had me reaching for the repeat button after the first listen. It grabbed me right away and just keeps on getting better. From the catchy first track all the way to the ambient epic of the last, this is one cohesive album that just SOUNDS GOOD!

Any fans of the previous two should not be dissappoint with this one, and people who like the favor of some 80s New Wave in their contemporay music should be pleased as well.

Three strong albums -- I have high hopes for number four!

When they exploded out of the gates on their 2004 debut, Contraband, Velvet Revolver were met with as much diffidence as appreciation. After all, supergroups have tended to detonate as often as succeed, and with vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan, and guitarist Slash all vying to keep the lit match away from the fuse, the odds against this band ever seeing album #2 were even money at best. Surprise! Not only have Velvet Revolver survived three years with unreckless abandon, this album blows the doors off its predecessor. Save a pair of disinfected ballads ("The Last Fight," "Gravedancer"), Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener "Let It Roll" and its lewd brother "Spay"), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like "Mary Mary," "She Builds Quick Machines," and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Hey Nice Velvet Release.......2007-07-12

This Latest Album Libertad from Velvet Revolver is as good as their debut a little bit more focused in some areas then there are some tracks you are going to say . is this it, come on a little more depth and creativity? so it's not a 5 to 10 star album but it is still a good listen. for some people expecting some else it may take a couple of listens before you actually start groovin to this album. but it is not a bad album, i just think that Velvet should've put more licks and riffs and fills to make Libertad tighter on some of the tracks, but i guess they can do that on the next album.

Rock On Guys .

1 out of 5 stars Coaster.......2007-07-11

This album sounds like a scott weiland solo album, i listened to it 2 times all the way through and just couldnt find anything worth listening to, i was hoping for a hard rock/rock album and they come out with a retro album, you cant really even tell slash is on the album other than a few solos. I gave it away.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2007-07-11

This album was a huge suprise. I got contraband because I was a rageing STP fan and mildly interested in GNR. I was not sure what to expect with contraband, but it ended up being a huge dissappointment. I listened to it about 3 times and it has since been collecting dust. So I baught Libertad because I am a completeist, and I was not expecting much. But to my suprise and delight this album rules. It is fun, rockin, and a great summer time rock record. With contraband they sounded like STP and GNR got into a car accident and the survivors quickly ran to the nearest studio and put out a half a**'ed attempt at an album. But on Libertead they sound like a real band, and it works well. I would say 90% of the album sounds awesome, with the remaining 10% sounding ok. Scott sounds fantasic, I guess getting clean has done him a lot of good. (It still does not touch the excellence of his STP days but I'll take it.) He is a real rock n' roll MF. peace

4 out of 5 stars Took a few listens! .......2007-07-11

When I first put this cd in and checked it out, I was disappointed at what I heard. Nothing really stood out from the get go. I really liked the guitar lick in tune number two, but other than that it seems to be lacking something. However after about the 4th or 5th spin, I really started to get into it and now am pretty pleased with what on here. Yeah it's nothing ground breaking or earth shattering, but it's good straight ahead hard rock which is something I do enjoy a lot.

If you liked the first one?, you'll probably grow to like this one as well as it's pretty much a carbon copy of the first outing.

5 out of 5 stars Heart & Soul.......2007-07-11

Usually second albums always reflect the pressure of the session. Directions, enviromental, industry? There is always eyes upon the goods that long before the recorded meterial showed their real passion. In libertad passion is the word. When rock gods of the day goes east oriented sound (Robert Plant, Perry Farrel, etc...) Velvet revolver goes the west and slap around the punk attitude that create the sub text of the record. Songs like American Man & Marry Marry feels like you stand inside the empty pool and watch the watcher of the hood. This feeling completed itself with the image of a cop car which slowly passed in front of your porch, you see the changing light upon... All tracks are trace of the lost generation with stomping riffs. Even Duff McKagan feels comfortably this time. Also Matt Sorum is more adventures like he is in the Camp Freddy. But real gem is beetween Scott and Slash. When the slick and warm feel productions hit, there is no real damage reported here. The Last Fight and For A Brother are best vocals of the Scott with STP's Plush and Slash is edgy as hell. But the challenge position begins with the track like Pills, Demons & Etc and Just Sixteen-these are "band" tracks. When the album is fnished, you know the fact that; this isn't a some kind of Project. This is a real band.

Like his friend Vince Gill, Brad Paisley has achieved the often-difficult feat of reconciling being an entertainer and world-class guitarist. He's proven that on four admirable albums, and 5th Gear follows in that vein. Certainly "Ticks," an airy, radio-friendly ditty, is not the true substance here. That comes with such superior fare as the insightful "All I Wanted Was a Car" and "Online," a sly satire of people's Web facades. While his duet with Carrie Underwood ("Oh Love") is a bit cut and dried, Paisley ably handles "Letter to Me," "It Did," and "Mr. Policeman," a 21st-century outrun-the-law tune. The closing hymn, "When We All Get to Heaven," and ripping instrumental "Throttleneck" are Paisley at his best. It's admirable that he invites his venerable buddies, Little Jimmy Dickens, George Jones, Vince Gill, and Bill Anderson, along with Dolly Parton, to join in, but the obligatory "Kung Pao Buckaroos" skit is wearing a bit thin. Better to feature them musically, the way he includes Dickens, Gill, and Anderson on "Bigger Fish to Fry." In a time where lines between county and pop are blurring far too much, it's comforting to know Paisley still realizes and respects the differences. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars This Is Awesome!!.......2007-07-12

This album is worth getting - it is awesome. And I would absolutely recommend it to any country/Brad Paisley fan....

5 out of 5 stars GIFT.......2007-07-12

I bought this as a gift for my husband and have to admit I was not a Brad Paisley fan at the time of purchase. After listening to this CD multiple times I must say that I am now a fan. This is a great CD well worth purchasing I like all the songs on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Paisley continues to shine.......2007-07-11

5th Gear continues Brad's prominence as master of the Telecaster Guitar, witty and socially timely lyrics, and guy who enjoys what he does for a living. If you want country music that has comedy, real life emotion, quality musicianship, and is made by someone doing it their way, you won't be disappointed with this offering.

5 out of 5 stars love it, love it, love it!!!!.......2007-07-07

I recently purchased this cd because I heard and loved the clever tune "Ticks" Now that I have it I love every song on it the guitar work is incredible and the lyrics are great. I actually went through all of his CD's and realized I am a Brad Paisley fan and just purchased all the others.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps 2007's Best Country Album.......2007-07-03

I have to give kudos to Mr. Paisley for the fantastic 5th GEAR, which just may be 2007's very best country album. Prior to 5th GEAR, I'd never even heard any albums nor songs by Paisley. I'll admit, I'm not as avid a country fan as compared to other genres of music (though I'm a `multi-dimensional' music listener as I like to put it), but I've been trying lately to truly cover all the bases of music aside from my comfort zone. Honestly, Paisley's album truly excited me with his nearly pitch-perfect vocals, his adventurous songs, and his kick-butt guitar riffs. Let's face it, if I were a musician, I would call Brad Paisley just to come and play electric guitar on my album because the man is so sick at it. Sure, I've listened to a number of country albums including fine releases by Miranda Lambert (her CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND is also in the top echelon of releases in 2007) as well as the good, if somewhat bland underrated third release by Gretchen Wilson (ONE OF THE BOYS), but Paisley's 5th GEAR just feels more genuine in a number of respects.

I could run down every song on the track list, but with an album this consistent, I don't think that it is necessarily in the least. The album starts with the rousing "All I Wanted Was a Car" in which Paisley reminisces about how the other boys (in his teenage years) were looking for a slew of other things and he was simply searching for a car. "All I Wanted Was a Car" turns out to be ultimately a simple song with poignant, telling lyrics that really make it more complex. It is a personal favorite of mine with Paisley wailing on one of country music's most bluesy guitar solo of 2007 or for a couple of years for that matter. The refrain is perfect for singing with Paisley and with the catchy nature of "All I Wanted...,"you will definitely be singing along. First single "Ticks" is just as great and shows off Paisley's great sense of humor, something that Paisley and contemporary Joe Nichols seem to be exceptional at. Again, the guitars are sick and the groove is definitely "in the pocket", as jazz musicians would say. Mentioning in passing, the third straight consistent number, "Online" shows off Paisley's experimentalist tendency by featuring a tagged ending that includes a marching band. Now how many country albums in 2007 have featured a marching band? It's a rhetorical question, don't answer.

"Letter To Me" slows things down while, "I'm Still A Guy" features sound-effects that transcend country music. It is one you don't want to miss with bluesy fiddles, rollicking piano, and of course that signature guitar sound. Moving down the track-list, "Mr. Policeman" is a true standout track that brings a traditionalist country feel out with a very liberal tempo filled with complex guitar riffs from Paisley. For musicians, the track modulates several times as Paisley sheds through some sick guitar riffs. At the end, none can deny how funny the tag is when Paisley sings "I'm in the jailhouse now", after all the singing and instrumental breaks. "If Love Was A Plane" is certainly the most sweet song from 5th GEAR, while his duet with Carrie Underwood, "Oh Love," is fantastic as well. I don't usually mention interludes, but the interlude "Previously" leads into the phenomenal "Bigger Fish To Fry" in which Paisley reminisces how he used to cuss and do bad things as a child. The moral of the story is that he bad things, which would be consider miniscule in today's society, aren't a bad as other things and he resolves it to the fact that God has "bigger fish to fry". After his rant, he follows with the appropriate "When We All Get To Heaven", a very good interpretation on the church hymn and concludes the great album with an instrumental (very appropriate considering his musical skills), "Throttleneck".

Face it, 5th GEAR might actually earn Paisley a Grammy nomination because it is nearly the perfect country album. The tracks I didn't mentioned are as good or nearly as good as the ones I did mention. I highly recommend this fine album; it would make a great addition to any country fan's musical library or any fan of good, solid music. 4 stars Mr. Paisley.

After their wild experimental streak of the past decade, Wilco's sixth studio album might feel like a bit of a comedown. Sky Blue Sky is mellow, moody, and uncharacteristically monotone, opening with a pleasant jangle and Jeff Tweedy singing a simple song: "Maybe the sun will shine today, the clouds will blow away." He doesn't even follow it up with a barbed punchline. Could it be that the restless Chicago band has settled back into its gentle Americana roots--or does this sudden mid-career reappraisal represent Wilco's gutsiest move yet? Mostly written in the studio by the full band, it's certainly the group's most cohesive album in ages, presenting a dense song cycle padded with intricate guitar work, brushed rhythms, and '70s soft-rock accents. In places it sounds like Wings ("Hate It Here"), in others Harry Nilsson ("Walken"), and in the middle it goes a bit Grateful Dead ("Shake It Off"). At the same time, there's a distinct sense of hearing a band finally at ease in its own skin. Sky Blue Sky represents the sound of Wilco finally pulling through its petulant adolescence. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

"Sky Blue Sky" has hints of early-seventies Southern California folk-rock sweetness in the harmonies. The album is filled with brash guitar solos that take songs like "You Are My Face" and "Shake It Off" in unexpected directions.

3 out of 5 stars This must have been a really bad breakup.......2007-07-09

This is one of my absolute fave bands--This is disappointing for me even after 5 or 6 run throughs..Tweedy whines on and on about love lost on virtually every song...the most sophomoric he has ever sounded, with ocassional nice little lyrical parts (not as clever or as important as previous three records--I mean he sings about doing laundry for Christs sake, c'mon man) and some guitar parts which he relies too heavily on..it remainds me of Beck's Sea Change which he came back from thankfully and Neil Young's Tonights the Night (although Neil relied a lot on Lofgren's guitar, at least the angst was not a handcuffing factor for every track). Some good stuff on here, but get over the broken heart thing on every track man. Not nearly as pretty as previous "girl" tracks.. I look forward more inspired things from Tweedyco next time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-07-08

I listen to this CD every day and will for a LONG time to come! I love all Wilco records, but I have a special place in my heart for this one, for reasons I cannot divulge, but I have a good reason.

I love the title track, Jeff's voice is better than it's ever been, and it's an emotional record, full of just downright beautiful music. Also, for the fan who wants "rock", you've got Walken, Impossible Germany, Shake it Off, what more could you want? If you've never seen Wilco live, you must, a completed rewarding experience!

You won't hear a lot of the noise that was on the last two Wilco CD's, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost is Born (both equally excellent records), this new one is quieter, but the lyrics and musicship are first rate. Wilco is the BEST american band today!! Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars I'm trying really hard to like this album......still trying...........2007-07-05

this ablum is difficult. why the change to dullness? Basically, I feel like I'm back in my parents house listening to America or the Eagles or Lightfoot on 8-track. I'm sad. This album is sad. I'm sorry. I so like to idea of siding with the seeds, though. Maybe next time. Wooahis me.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-07-04

Wilco onc again delivers an all around solid album! I definatly recommend it for any diehard Wilco fan or anyone looking for get into Wilco for the first time!

5 out of 5 stars In a word...PERFECT.......2007-07-04

I don't know what else there is to say about this album except that it's simply incredible. This is Wilco at it's finest form, and together they have created a flawless piece of work. The songwriting is strong as usual, the band is very tight (having recording the album live-in-the-studio with few overdubs), the production is great, and even the packaging and presentation are well done. There is not one thing that I would change.
That being said, I want to comment on any other reviewers who might call this album "dull," "boring," "a step back," or "uninspired." Sure this is more like the Wilco of old and lacks the experimental sounds prevalent on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost is Born," but the result is equally awe-inspiring and worthy of praise. I love both of those albums, but Wilco has managed to strip down the layers of sound to reveal the core of their talent. Only Wilco can do so much and say so much in one song. You can hear everything going on musically, and can sense Jeff Tweedy's thought process. Wilco is growing up. They are not trying to appeal to the trendy or "indie" crowd that popularized their most recent two albums. They are just doing what they do best, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

If you have a few extra bucks, make sure you buy the Deluxe edition with the DVD. It's worth the price of the album alone.

A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars A Hundred Miles or More.......2007-07-09

I purchased the CD for my husband, a long-time A. Krauss fan. I heard the CD once and fell in love with it and immediately played it again. The Don Henley duets are fabulous. Very relaxing and enjoyable CD.

5 out of 5 stars A selection of songs on previous CD's.......2007-07-09

I was not disappointed in this CD however I had heard most of the songs previously on her other CD's. I still recomend this because I could listen to her sing anytime.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! back to her bluegrass & gospel roots........2007-07-03

I first heard Alison Krauss doing a solo playing interview on Fordham's WFUV radio. Instantly loved her work and my wife loved the CD I bought and all we've found since. Her best ever was the double album Alison Krauss Live. Since then she's gone through a period of trying to slick up her image and go more mainstream with her music. Her strength is bluegrass and gospel where she is the sweetest and most compelling performer I've ever heard. She was the backbone to the O Brother Where Art Thou sound track and we saw her at Carnegie Hall in a terrific recreation of the O Brother soundtrack with all the original performers. This album is a wonderful return. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Voice!.......2007-07-02

I love her voice and all of the songs. I do wish there were more Bluegrass songs on there, but overall I am very pleased with the cd!

Although the music of Norah Jones continues to blend pop, soul, folk, and country with a seasoning of jazz, her third album for Blue Note is the first where she's written (or collaborated on) all the material. Beneath the smooth surface lie darker strains on the album-opening "Wish I Could" (about a boyfriend lost to war), intimations of mortality in "The Sun Doesn't Like You," and the post-election horrors of "My Dear Country." The last seems to channel the inspiration of Brecht/Weill, while the equally bleak "Sinkin' Soon" is set to a jaunty Dixieland rag. Throughout, Jones's vocal intimacy and melodic warmth remain as disarmingly understated as ever. The soulful "Thinking of You," the countryish "Wake Me Up," and the syncopated "Be My Somebody" reflect the captivating style of her previous work. Although too much in the same midtempo mode becomes a dreamy lull, cut by cut, Jones's voice is irresistible. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as the her first two releases.......2007-07-11

In my opinion, this CD is simply not as strong as her first two CDs. Most of the songs are fine, but forgettable. A couple are just a bit weird-sounding for my taste. Out of her 3 CDs, I preferred "Come Away With Me", although I understand that Ms. Jones feels that her current CD is a truer reflection of her musical style.

Right after I bought this CD, I was privileged enough to see her in concert. She is clearly talented, and has an accomplished band. The concert was wonderful and was over before I knew it. Her performance got rave reviews in the local newspaper the next day.

I look forward to her next release, mostly to see how her artistic style evolves.

2 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2007-07-11

I own all three of her CDs. Come Away with Me is the best IMO. Her passion and talent shine through. Each song was worthy to be on the CD. In Feels Like Home, it seemed she relaxed a bit, had a little more fun, but lost some of the passion, a couple of the songs were not up to what I expected, but passed as entertaining. This third CD is the worst. My impression was that now that she has made a name for herself she can put any track on a CD without much scrutiny. I have listened to it a few times, but it just doesn't do anything exciting for me. A big disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Insipid and inoffensive, uninspired and uninspiring.......2007-07-08

That's about the highest praise I can muster for this effort. It isn't that it's BAD, but it just never achieves "lift off."

I wish I could wax enthusiastic, but after quite a few listens at this point, I don't think my opinion is likely to change appreciably.

Time for Ms. Jones to find her passion. It isn't evident on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2007-07-07

I have all her cds. This one is new, different and good. I like all the tracks, Be my somebody tonight got me a speeding ticket. I saw her in concert and she puts on a helluva show. Worth every penny.

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

5 out of 5 stars Listen to The Music not the critics........2007-07-10

Wow. Some of the reviews on this page leave my mouth agape with wonder. What in the world is so very wrong with this album? There are a few that are saying there's "no fun' in this record or the 'dynamic is gone'(whatever that means). What record are you listening to? To all of you naysayers I say Fooey and double Fooey! THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. It's a groovy little record period. But that's all it is. It doesn't have to be the next Sgt. Peppers or Paul's Boutique or whatever. You have to take a look at it on it's own. I will say this for this album, no other band is making music like this right now. This is completly original music. Why aren't these guys given the chance to grow and expand? If you don't like this album fine, whatever. Go listen to your 12" of Brass Monkey until your parents kick you out of the basement.
For those of you out there who want something a little groovy and different, get it. Meanwhile I'm going to mix myself a gimlet and listen to a great little combo called the Beastie Boys. Their new album is cool as hell.

5 out of 5 stars Play this CD anytime........2007-07-10

Just put this CD on when you're not specifically trying to listen to music. Just let it play. It's fun, but can't be the center of attention like the Beastie's cds that you're used to. It's not all that entertaining to sit down and listen to (like when driving) even for a fan of jambands like myself, but it's the perfect album for anytime.

4 out of 5 stars Musick for Grass Bars.......2007-07-10

I don't expect this album to go over too well in America. Maybe in the West a bit, but over all, this album will go un-noticed, which is a shame because it's got a nice selection of little grooves like you'd hear in a grass bar.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2007-07-09

This is what I've been waiting for for years... Being teased by the once in a while instrumentals here it is!!! this music is GREAT need I say More

3 out of 5 stars THE MIX-UP.......2007-07-08

The Beastie Boys are probally the only band that does Hip-Hop, Punk, and these instrumentals. The Cd is not bad. If you remember the instrumentals from "check your head" , "Ill communications" and "Hello Nasty" they pretty much sounds the same.
This is not their first Cd of instrumentals. "Ill Sounds From Way Out" was a collection of songs from "check your head" and "ill communications".
Overall these songs show that the Beastie Boys are more than just another Hip-Hop group.

Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." On past efforts, the combination of breezy keyboard, arpeggiated guitar, choral vocals, and a military snare-beat would yield another slab of smarm, here MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career, blending vocal styles with singer Chester Bennington for a moving piece that's as welcome a repertorial addition as Linkin Park is ever likely to muster. --Jason Kirk

5 out of 5 stars Love It...Different but still Rockin.......2007-07-12

I have read many reviews on Amazon about this cd...Most say it is not like the other stuff LP released..This is true to a degree..However, it is still a nice record ...It has a different sound but different is better..Why would they still sound the same..That would mean they have not grown as a group. Well i like the change..I am loving this cd ..

2 out of 5 stars Regretably Boring Release.......2007-07-12

This album is a definite divergence from previous Linkin Park releases, and though it is similar in composition and general approach it nevertheless falls short in almost all respects. What really ruins this album is that nothing seems to fit - slow repetitive music is combined with uninteresting lyrics; fast and uniquely Linkin Park beats are combined with overly repetitive lyrics which are unimaginative and not engaging.
The overall CD comes across as a poorly planned and eclectic collection - it's important to branch out and try new things, and Linkin Park should be commended for not trying to hole up in a mode established in Meteora and Hybrid Theory. At the same time, it is important not to disregard the things which worked well for this group of musicians and the fans which enjoyed such releases. Minutes to Midnight will probably disappoint any but the staunchest adherents of Linkin Park's new album of teenage-angst, punk, hip-hop, synth mix.

4 out of 5 stars not the best, but still good.......2007-07-12

I've have linked linkin park since their first album, and this one is no acception. Tho the use of cussing is in poor taste. It does not flow very well with the lyrics and it seems to stagnate the songs some how..

4 out of 5 stars A loyal LP fan, finding a deeper meaning behind these tracks........2007-07-12

When I first heard the tracks from this album about a month ago, I was immediately turned off by them all. But that was because I was expecting to hear the usual nu-metal sound with the rock/rap flow. When I listen to this album more and more, however, I realize that it is the same Linkin Park, and it is the same type of lyrics. The meat of this album is what really turned my attitude towards this "new sound" from closed-minded to open-minded. I think it's interesting to see Linkin Park take their sound into a different direction, but what you have to understand is that music comes in two parts: the beat and the lyrics. The beat may have changed, but I think the power of the lyrics will resonate throughout you if you just have the open-mindedness and patience that the band probably intended for their audience to have.

I've been a Linkin Park fan since I was in middle school. I'm a senior in college now, and there's something about the way these guys make their music that just fits me like a coat. Linkin Park is such an awesome band, and if you are a fan like I am, you should at least give this album your full attention and see how the lyrics and sound blend together. Don't just HEAR the sound, but LISTEN to it. I think the ones who are criticizing this album are the ones who think that Linkin Park should have a particular SOUND, and so they equate "greatness" with anything that resembles that sound. But that is a fallacy. Greatness for Linkin Park, for me, is how they are able to get their message across through various types of sounds. Nu-metal was great for them, and I think this new style will be great for them, too.

I personally think this album is one of their more mature albums. Meteora is my all-time favorite, but Minutes to Midnight is slowly moving upward towards Meteora status. 'What I've Done' is such a powerful song to me, as are 'Bleed it Out' and, especially, 'Leave Out All the Rest.'

4 out of 5 stars All Bands Change to Survive!!!!.......2007-07-11

I'm a linkin park fan like most of you on here. I just wanted to shed some light on whats goin on with this album and linkin park as a whole. Yes this album is much different from hybrid theory and meteora, and some people absolutely hate this album because it is so different. In my opinion, this album is the worst out of the three but its not a bad album. "What I've done", "Bleed It Out", and "No More Sorrow" are the best songs on there while the others like "In pieces" and "In Between" are probably apart of linkin parks evolution and the songs aren't really that bad.

Also, I feel that linkin park is evolving just like any other long lasting band to stay in the business. I mean come on, people are bashing on them for changing while when Meteora first came out (and you can see for yourself under the reviews on Meteora) that alot of people hated this album because they aren't musically talented or that they sound exactly the same as hybrid theory. One reviewer thought that since they sound the same, the band is a fad and will soon pass over because of there lack of expanding. Um, isn't that what they've done here, they've expanded from their original sound to prove that they have talent (which is evident in the guitar solo in "In Pieces"). Also its a huge blow to a band saying that they aren't talented instrumently and this album I feel is an F*** you to those critics. When hybrid theory first came out, it took the teen scene by storm. Now, much of them are in their 20's and I think that is one of the reasons for linkin park changing. I mean what 20+ year old still wants to listen to the teeny rock (don't get me wrong hybrid theory is a great album, I just don't listen to it as much any more)? Also, a band has to change so that their fans don't get bored with the same old sounding music. Look at Green Day, they've completely changed their sound from their best album Dookie to American Idiot (which wasn't too bad) thats a 10 years difference. Would you expect Linkin Park to be around for 10 years if they sounded the same every album, or can anybody tell me a band that has lasted over 10 years that hasn't changed? Me either thats what I thought. Same with Metallica (whom by the way is way past their prime) from their first 3 albums which were amazing to their last 3 albums.

In any case, Linkin Park isn't going to please everybody, but one thing is for sure, the band is evolving for the better.
