5 out of 5 stars Underrated songmeister delivers yet again.......2000-07-18

Tim Krekel is without a doubt one of America's most overlooked tunesmiths and guitarists. The Louisville, Kentucky-based songwriter has penned hits for - among others - Chrystal Gayle, Patty Loveless, Delbert McClinton, and Deana Carter. He has also toured and recorded with Jimmy Buffett and Billy Swan. "Underground" is Krekel's follow-up release to his brilliant 1998 effort, "L & N" - both of which are released on the indie label, ear X-tacy.

While Krekel fans may have projected that the wonderful (17-track) "L & N" would be a difficult benchmark to surpass, he packs a mighty punch with the 15-song line-up on "Underground." A busy songwriter whose tunes get pitched to Nashville-based country artists on a regular basis, Krekel's rendering of his own compositions don't fall anywhere close to categorization as country music. They are better described as melodic, adult-oriented, roots rock with plenty of soul and a healthy dash of country and bluegrass.

The bottomline is that Krekel throws out more hooks than fishermen on a Gulf of Mexico pier at sunset. This is a CD chock full of great songs - from the Beatlesque refrain of "Anna" to the rootsy delivery of "All Night Radio." From the back porch mandolin and harmonica of "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" to the sparsely produced "Where I've Fallen" (on which songwriting pal Kim Richey provides background vocals). From the guitar-driven groove of "Take a Ride" to the hilarious country swagger of "Redneck Van."

Krekel's tight-knit Louisville-based band includes Jim Baugher on bass/vocals, Peter Rhee on violin/mandolin and vocals, and David Marasco on drums/percussion. The effort is bolstered further through guest appearances by Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd), Scott Baggett (Bill Lloyd, Billy Joe Shaver, Webb Wilder), Ian Wallace (Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, King Crimson), and Kim Richey.

Within seconds into this CD, Krekel invites his listeners - amidst swirling and rollicking guitars - to his world: "Yeah, I've got the perfect place / Anytime you need some space / Take the stairway down / A cozy little room to hide in / from the angry world outside / Let's go underground."

Do yourself a favor and make a little underground visit. Buy this CD. And tell others about this tremendously gifted and overlooked artist.
