Since they emerged in the early 90s, Newfoundland's own Great Big Sea have gradually consolidated a reputation as one of the greatest neo-Celt bands, from anywhere in the Six Nations or, as in this case, beyond. Drawing upon their homeland's strong Irish and Scottish ancestry and centuries-old seafaring heritage, they have fashioned a roistering, danceable sound and a live presence not unlike a bar-band but operating on a massive scale. But for all their good-time, party-hearty extroversion, they also demonstrate a rare affinity for love songs and more introspective types of material. Recorded in spectacular sound before adoring audiences, this "kitchen party," as one band member described it, is at once intimate and grand, folkloric and modern, acoustic and electric. Traditional instruments like fiddle, tin whistle, accordion are fused seamlessly with electric guitars and trap drums, plus tight and charismatic lead and harmony vocals, creating a spiraling energy that takes the crowd by storm and hurtles from living room speakers like a conquering wave. The CD is accompanied by a must-have DVD, which not only includes 26 tracks of concert footage but four essential music videos, one of which, "Lukey," features a collaboration with the Chieftains. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
WONDERFUL GOOD!!!!!!.......2007-07-04
I will admit that I was a bit slow in learning of this excellent group and discovered them quite by accident. I love Celtic music and had recently heard them singing Capt. Kidd on Pandora. I went straight to Amazon and ordered Courage & Patience & Grit. It not only has 20 something songs on the CD, but extra tracks on the DVD portion for the live concert. These guys, Sean, Alan & Bob, are not only extremely musically talented but smart, witty and funny as well. VERY well worth every penny!!!!! I plan on buying more of their product!!!!!
Different, though enjoyable.......2007-05-24
To be honest, they have added a little weight, lost a little pep and seem to be focusing on a little older crowd. These are all just little perceptions that a long time fan would pick up. Some of the songs are done very well, some not so well. I loved Gideon Brown (which is not on the Hard & The Easy CD) but other favorites came off a little flat. I missed Tickle Cove Pond, which I thought would be included surely. Coupled to these disappointments is the fact that Sean seemed to make comments bordering on inappropriate for youngsters during the video performance. Did I enjoy it, yes. As much as the Great Big DVD? No. Their performances in that video may not ever be matched. The music on the Hard & The Easy CD is EXCELLENT and I must suggest you get that CD coupled with this 2 disc set to experience it completely. Great Big Sea is always able to provide truly amazing value with their releases. A video DVD and CD are included in quite a few releases and I look forward to the next one. In summary, this was a good addition but not quite up to par with past presentations.
Courage & Patience & Grit - Great Big Sea In Concert [CD/DVD Combo].......2007-04-12
Good Canadian-Irish group with a distinctive flair for regional music and traditional Irish music. The CD is good, the DVD is better. You get a much better feel for the group and the music by watching it first.

Grab yer sword, pass the jar, stomp yer feet! If ye wurnt a pirate beforehand, ye will be after ye listen to these collecktion of tunes!
Great Big Sea and Hear!.......2007-03-09
The music is fuel that is pulling you and pushing you to emotionally tag along! Fun and somehow soul searching at times... but always the laugh at the end! The blend of voices both touch the inner heart - almost mournfull at times... and then the booming joyfull sounds that bring the full on shine out of you! YOU WILL JOIN IN!!! GREAT BIG LISTEN!!

Disappointed.......2007-03-24
I don't understand where they went a rye but somehow todd did. I am a die-hard Toadies fan I mean I love that band so I assumed I would love his new band Burden Brothers. But to my amazement I hated most of this album it is too soft for me and sounds way too pop rock radio compliant. Bring back your Toadies rawness and this band will be alright.
This is "Real Rock Music".......2006-12-18
Finally we have some "Real Rock Music" to listen to besides all this fake stuff that's out there. I've even converted my teenage kids over to the Burden Brothers. Vaden Lewis has amazing vocal command on this CD, and all the songs are awesome. This CD is definately going to be in my top 10 of all time. If you like to crank up your rock music and listen to some awesome riffage and great lyrics......this CD is for you. You won't be disappointed!
Great Dallas band.......2005-09-16
This is a quick review.....If you like the Toadies, then you'll love this band. They have an "in your face" edge to them but still show a softer side as well. They show that they have a great style of music and a depth in their lyrics. Very nice band to become acquainted with on a regular basis.
Exactly Like a Toadies Album.......2005-04-23
If you are a fan of any of the 2 Toadies albums, you will be a fan of this one. There is a healthy mix of outstanding, midline, and yucky songs on this album as there have been in Todd's last two. Buy it, but for heaven's sake you cannot ever judge an album after just a few listens unless you are basing things on something like foul language (which Burden Bros have certainly maintained here). Songs to preview are If You're Going to Heaven, Your Fault, Beautiful Night and Shadow.
Just horrible.......2005-04-05
First off, let me explain my own musical preferences. I enjoy Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, QOTSA, Dandy Warhols, Kyuss, Toadies. I could go on, I just wanna give you an idea of what I like, so you can gauge my reaction to this album accordingly.
This is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. I was so incredibly dissapointed when I listened to it. I'm a pretty big fan of Toadies; this is nothing like Toadies. Every song sounds the same, Lewis doesn't change his vocals throughout the entire CD. I was expecting so much from this group considering their past endeavors, but even the instrumental part of the album is ridiculously lacking. I just don't know what happened. I bought this CD off of Amazon, when I received it I immediately put it in my CD payer and I disliked it so much I put it up for sale on Amazon the next day. I haven't been to any of their live shows, so those may rock, but this CD sucks. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are thinkin. If you can, I recommend going to your local used cd store and if they have a listening station, listen to this cd before you buy it. Do not waste even five bucks on this cd unless you listen to it first and like it. If you want a cd that rocks, buy the first Queens of the Stone Age cd or maybe the Kyuss cd Blues for the Red Sun. Or really, just buy anything BUT this Burden Brothers cd.

Some inspired music has arrived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (mainly on New Orleans-themed benefit albums), but nothing as audaciously ambitious as this cross-generational collaboration between Crescent City mainstay Allen Toussaint and former British upstart turned adventurously eclectic veteran Elvis Costello. As a songwriter, producer, and arranger, Toussaint has been responsible for hits from artists ranging from Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Lee Dorsey to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle. Costello, long a huge fan of Toussaint's music, sings relatively familiar fare such as "On Your Way Down" and "Freedom for the Stallion" from Toussaint's extensive songbook along with obscurities mainly recorded by Dorsey. Toussaint supplies his distinctive piano and horn arrangements--as well as lead vocals on "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"--with Costello's Imposters serving as the rhythm section. Yet the real revelation comes from the new material, including the title track (a searing Costello composition in the Toussaint soul-spiritual mode) and five new Costello/Toussaint compositions that spotlight Toussaint's signature sound without diminishing Costello's creative contributions. What could have been a curiosity is instead a hallmark in the catalog of each artist. --Don McLeese
Album Description
The River in Reverse is Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint's spirited and deeply soulful new album, including seven songs from Toussaint's remarkable catalog; five newly written by the two; and one new song, the title track, written by Costello. Sessions for the album took place over a whirlwind two weeks late last year in Hollywood, CA and at Piety Street Studios in Toussaint's hometown of New Orleans. Produced by Joe Henry, the album masterfully combines Costello's band the Imposters with Toussaint's horn section (Amadee Castenell, Joe Smith, Sam Williams, and Brian Cayolle) and guitarist (Anthony Brown).
Toussaint led the ensemble from the piano, with Imposters keyboard player Steve Nieve switching to Hammond B3. The majority of the tracks were cut with the entire group in the room and Costello singing live, occasionally adding his guitar to the mix. Costello selected songs from deep within the Toussaint catalogue such as "Nearer To You," "Freedom for the Stallion," and "Tears, Tears and More Tears." Toussaint kicks off the lead vocal on his composition, "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?" and trades vocal lines with Costello and bassist Davey Faragher on several other tracks.
All of the horn arrangements are marked with Toussaint's distinctive style and, commented Costello, "add a second voice" to the title track, the one song that Costello wrote alone. Just before the recording began, the duo holed up in New York to write together throughout October, a quick-moving process that resulted in four songs on the album of various combinations of words and music.
The songwriting collaboration began with Costello writing lyrics for Toussaint's beautiful minor key variation of Professor Longhair's "Tipitina." The resulting piece is now entitled "Ascension Day." Other new titles include "The Sharpest Thorn," "Broken Promise Land," and "International Echo."
Toussaint previously produced a 1983 Costello cover of Yoko Ono's "Walking on Thin Ice" with the Attractions and the T.K.O. Horns, and also contributed piano to the New Orleans-recorded "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" from Costello's 1989 album Spike.
Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Toussaint relocated to New York City, where the two renewed their musical friendship at several benefit concerts and club gigs during a seven-day period from the 17th of September, leading to discussions of this new album. The powerful song "The River in Reverse" was written by Costello on September 24th, 2005, and performed by him for the first time at that night's "Parting the Waters" benefit event organized by the The New Yorker magazine.

A Joyful Rage.......2007-06-23
This tribute to New Orleans and the work of Allen Toussaint in the aftermath of Katrina is powerful and uplifting. A great collaboration - Elvis' agnger informed by Toussaint's humanity
The DVD is excellent as well. Typically, these are just a few videos and some scenes in the studio. The footage here of Toussaint returning to his hometown, as well as some hot live performances, could easily have made a compelling feature documentary. (And have we ever seen footage of Elvis recording an album?)
Great.......2007-01-05
This is an excellent arrangement of talent. The songs are great and the DVD provides enriching context. For those of us living along the mighty Mississippi, the music strikes deep. Allen is a terrific pianist and these guys sound very good together. Best song on the whole thing is "All These Things", with River in Reverse running a close second.
Such a waste..........2006-10-06
If you could find a way to remove Elvis Costello's voice track from the recording, this would be a very good disc. If you could replace him with a competent R&B or soul singer, it would be a fantastic one (especially if he slurred the lyrics). As it is, it's just unlistenable. EC never was much of a singer, but here he's way out of his depth -- off-key whitebread bombast is not what this kind of music calls for. His voice is fingernails on the blackboard bad, and it's relentless... there's not even a single instrumental track to relieve the pain. It kills me to toss any disc with Allen Toussaint on it, but this one's got to go.
Another Sharp Collaboration for Costello Who Gains Gravitas With the Soulfully Erudite Toussaint.......2006-08-24
Renaissance musician/troubadour Elvis Costello partners this time with legendary New Orleans R&B musician Allen Toussaint, and the results on this disc are quite fulfilling, often languorous and melancholy, all the more fitting given its context after the devastation of Katrina. Even without the relief aspect, the timing of this collaboration somehow feels right perhaps because Costello at this juncture of his career seems to be gaining more gravitas as a musical presence. Produced live and without overdubs by Joe Henry, the crisp-sounding recording effectively combines Costello's band, The Impostors, with Toussaint's guitarist Anthony "AB" Brown and the Crescent City Horns to produce frequently transcendent moments. Costello wrote the searing title tune, a biting sideswipe against the Bush administration's slow response in hurricane relief, and he performs it with his familiar angry-man vigor.
Together, Costello and Toussaint wrote five tracks, the best of which are the swinging, sardonic "Broken Promise Land" and the jaunty, inexplicably titled "International Echo". However, the best cuts are definitely the Toussaint compositions beginning with the opening song, the mournful "On Your Way Down". Several, well-turned love songs add to the texture of the blend, such as "Nearer to You" and "All These Things". It's not all dark moods as the driving "Tears, Tears and More Tears" makes a nice contrast, and Toussaint effortlessly takes the lead vocal on the soulful "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further". There is an invaluable DVD included, the half-hour documentary, "Putting the River in Reverse", which chronicles the recording sessions, one of which took place in New Orleans, the first major session after Katrina. Visually as well as aurally, an erudite, impeccably dressed Toussaint makes a striking contrast to the still-grungy Costello. Just as he proved with his wonderful Burt Bacharach collaboration and his orchestral work, Costello can complement his eclectic style in the most unusual of settings.
Soulful masterpiece.......2006-07-14
This is damn good stuff. It's the kind of album that you listen to while sitting on the edge of your bed, smoking one cigarette too many or maybe staring out your window while the sun sets. After all these years, Elvis Costello is still knocking them out of the park and with Allen Toussaint as a partner in crime on this recording, the result is an album that's so good that it almost hurts. The piano work is exquisite on this album as is Costello's singing.
"Nearer to You" is a great track, as well as "Tears, Tears and More Tears", which somehow reminds me of old Motown without trying too hard. "The River in Reverse" is probably the best song in the album but then again, all the songs are really good anyway so it's almost like saying that a beautiful woman in a room full of them is the prettiest.
This is a strongly recommended purchase, not to mention that there is a nice behind the scenes dvd that comes with select pressings of this album.

A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19
Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!

Musical hybrids are always a dicey venture, running the risk of the whole's being less than the sum of the parts. Discussing the incorporation of jazz in classical music (or vice versa) can involve a quagmire of definitions. Instead, it is best to judge the works individually on their musical merits. All those represented here succeed to a greater or lesser degree. This disc opens with Gershwin's Manhattan anthem, Rhapsody in Blue, among the first to mix the two genres and yet to be bettered for seamlessness. Conductor Bernstein's love and understanding of the jazz idiom imbues works by Milhaud (La Création du monde) and Copland ("Burlesque" from Music for the Theatre [sic]) with the requisite swing to make their jazz influences ring true. But it is composer Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs for Solo Clarinet and Jazz Ensemble, West Side Story) who blends the two genres into a brew that is less noble experiment and more ecstatic experience. Recommended. --Michael Ross
Customer Reviews:
Classical-jazz fusion was never more alive than on this CD.......2006-06-03
This NPR compilation from Sony brings together some of Bernstein's jazziest recordings during his heyday with the NY Phil., including the best of his three versions of Milhaud's "Le Creation du Monde." LB was attached to this piece, but his late- Seventies reading on EMI has hardening of the arteries and his 1945 debut recording predates LP. Milhaud created a minor masterpiece of jazzy classicism in this work, and LB gives us a swinging take.
His own Prelude, Fugue, and Riff is just as good a piece, and here there's no hesitaiton in saying that Bernstein's reading, featuring the NY Phil's legendary first clarinetist Stanley Drucker, is definitive, as is his recording of Music for the Theater by his mentor, Aaron Copland. When I was a kid in the Fifties, all these pieces still had a lot of juice, and although the landscape has changed, for me they still do. The immortal chestnut on this CD is, of course, Rhapsody in Blue, tossed off by Tilson Thomas in the original jazz band orchestration and done faster than we generally hear the piece, thanks to the gimmick of having the ocmposer himself dubbed in as the soloist. It's a gimmich but fun for a listen or two. Gershwin rips through the Rhapsody in 13 min. flat--about 5 min. faster than normal--and MTT is hard-pressed to adjust to the composer's many sudden tempo changes.
Almost perfect.......2000-06-23
This is really a very interesting disc. The selection of classical works with a jazz influence puts some great recordings on this disc, especially the jazzier and faster than normal recording of Rhapsody in Blue. While the disc is interesting, I don't thik it's one of those discs one can just listen to - some of the peices don't seem to lend themselves to that. Still, the liner notes are great, and the selection is really quite good.
This may be my favorite recording of Rhapsody in Blue ever!

monty p (portage wi).......2005-02-18
We never missed a show when the Suburbs came into Madison Wi. Whatever gin mill or punk club they came to. We would always be on the left side of the stage. They knew us well. We would leave our empty bottles on the stage, Merlyns didn't sell bottled beer. They would give us a good talking to during sets. But we were never asked to leave even though we would tear up the place. They remembered us every time they came to town. Each and every show was a complete riot. The best was one night Beej had loaded up his hair with baby powder or something like that, and powder was flying everytime he would start jumping around. Maybe you had to be there, but it was awesome. Being that we were all from a farmimg town, we all loved Cows (the tune). Check out their music it is the best in the loud party situations.

Prince wasn't the ONLY thing to come out of the Twin Cities during the 80's! There were The Suburbs!!!
If you've never heard The Suburbs, I feel sad for you. They play outrageous rock and roll. I can only imagine what they must have been like in the 80's, tearing up Minneapolis bars and night clubs. (I would've been a fetus back then) They burst with energy throughout. Plus, every single song on this disk is catchy, witty and highly entertaining.
I was introduced to the Suburbs last year by my high school band teacher. He played the CD for me after school one day, and I was hooked right away. Screeching guitars, old skool 80's synthpads, volatile drumming, dead pan humor... All the songs are excellent, but the stand out tracks are "Hobnobbin," "Tiny People," "Eyesight," "Cig Machine" and of course, the insanely hilarious "Cows." (They got the skinny feet.)
Definately a must buy! If you dig great rock and roll musicianship with witty lyrics, then you should become a slave to this band. The Suburbs are one of many great bands in the Twin Cities scene you should check out, too, both past and present. ;)

Beejtar/Universal
The Suburbs were Nicolas Cage punks: debonair, blasé, volatile. They were New Romantic, sure, like an unexpected and inappropriate proposal of marriage--an hour into a first date, say, with the Champagne flowing in toast to everyone and everything in the steakhouse. Banned from the Longhorn (Minneapolis's CBGB), and forced to graze in the regional rock circuit of the late Seventies and early Eighties, they sounded happy to be a band, happy to observe the indignation or delirium they provoked in their audience. This was how New Wave was meant to Ferry its way through the slam-dancers, cigarette dangling on pursed lips, lit ashes on skin, suit gathering moisture.
Even those who never saw the Suburbs in the Eighties can glean all this from their full-length recordings, the first three of which have been reissued by Universal Records. Fans will doubtless swoop in hungrily on the hard-to-find sophomore double-disc, Credit in Heaven, which documents the quintet's growth into a white, grumbling Time. Others will recall Love Is the Law, the band's best-ever bid to stop the world and meld with you, O fan of smart songs and smarter hair. (It presaged Ike Reilly's "Commie Drives a Nova" with "Perfect Communist," which featured the punch line, "I'd love to share.")
For Hives enthusiasts, however, the real event is the reissue of In Combo, the criminally forgotten arty-party debut that not only echoes the new haircut bands, but tears them limb from limb and beats them with their own appendages. It might be the funniest record to be shelved among Minnesota classics--think Let It Be if Westerberg had written all his lyrics for Tommy Stinson... Irony would describe the attitude only if the Suburbs' admiration for the extremities of cattle (to take the example of "Cows") had been feigned. But keyboardist Chan Poling could find no more fitting a thing to toast than the supremely indifferent creatures dotting the prairies between Grand Forks and Milwaukee.
Singer-guitarist Beej Chaney was the jaded center of the band, too cool for old school but eager to swallow R&B and funk with roughage of guitar riffage. He made music for those fidgety rock guys stuck in the disco, and in the process reconciled the Rolling Stones' Some Girls with the ...needs of the speedy freaks around him. (This music struts for its life.) Chaney himself sounds like he's going to explode with "Goggles On," the most sensational, inspirational, Muppetational tribute ever penned to tripping out while annoying everyone around you. ("I see in color/Not black and white!") That squeaky-high voice might be a rabid Chipmunk squashed under the weight of a giant cowboy boot. Hey, I'll sweat to that oldie.
Living the 'Burbs.......2002-08-31
In Combo was released in Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1980 and, more or less, no where else - which was too bad. To the uninitiated, the album's get-up-and-dance, in your face, first track "Hobnobbin" is the listener's first clue to what is in store. Combo is that rare album where each song is a true gem. Many of the band's crowd favorites are included : Goggles On, Big Steer Blues, Baby Heartbeat, Cig Machine, Chemistry Set, and everyone's favorite, Cows ('cause they go - moo!). Having seen the band countless times belting out the hits during their primeval best (Jay's Longhorn, Diamond Jim's, the notorious concert at Mac Cafferty's (where they ran out of libation), Grand Old Days and other venues) this collection ranks as one of my most sought after recordings from the overlooked and greatly underestimated Minneapolis Scene of the late 70s and early 80s. With the exception of London and (possibly) New York, the Twin Cities were THE place to be, and the world's best artists knew it too. Prior to this recording the Suburbs released two EPs. The first, released in 1978 contained : Your Phone, Couldn't Care Less Anymore, You, Prehistoric Jaws, Memory, Go, Stereo, Teenage Run-in, and the first recording of Chemistry Set (included In Combo). The second was a 45 rpm that featured World War III and Change Agent. Many fans would love to return to those raw, early "Punk/New Wave" years and listen to these classics on CD if they were available. What do you think Beej?

Album Description
BRAND NEW RELEASE!!!
Album debuted at New York City's Carnegie Hall on November 10, 2005.
"Golden Chants in America...Commemorating 350 years of Jewish Music, 1654-2004," which includes music from the Spanish-Portuguese Jews, the synagogue and the Yiddish and Broadway theater, is the CD is the first U.S. recording to feature Jewish music spanning 350 years of life in America.
The historic album includes forward liner notes by acclaimed therapist and author of, "Musically Speaking," Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer. Featuring Music in Six Languages
The album features compositions sung in a virtual rainbow of languages, including Spanish, Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), German, Yiddish, Hebrew and English--much of which was brought to America by the Spanish-Portuguese, Russian and German Jews over the last 350 years. Album selections include "Bendigamos," a Spanish-Portuguese Jewish grace after meals sung in 16th century Castilian Spanish; and "Halleluyah," and the "Deutsche Kedusha," the great music of Vienna and Berlin written for the synagogue by Salomon Sulzer and Louis Lewandowski, respectively. To this day, most American Reform and many Conservative and Orthodox congregations continue to utilize Sulzer's "Shema" and Lewandowski's "Kiddush" in their services.
Other album highlights feature Yiddish and Broadway music, including "Vos is gevorn fun mayn Shtetele?" (What has become of my Shtetl?), "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," and Jerome Kern's "Can't Help Lovin' that Man," from the 1927 musical, "Show Boat."
The CD pays tribute to several of the modern Jewish composers, including Cantor Robbie Solomon, who has written extensively for the American synagogue. His gospel-style "Peace by Piece," embodies a universal anthem that expresses commitment to social action and the ultimate goal of peace.
Cantor Garfein demonstrates how modern interpretations of ancient prayer melodies have been influenced by contemporary American harmonies with selections of "Yih'yu L'ratson" and "Oseh Shalom" (prayers for meditation and peace), by composer Cantor Marshall Portnoy.
Customer Reviews:
A Terrific selection of music with one unforgetable voice! .......2006-12-15
Rebecca Garfein's beautiful and unusual voice, superb song selection, and simple but sophisticated arrangements will be appealing to a broad array of listeners! this is true folk music!
"And you shall be a blessing . . . " .......2006-01-19
This is a rare gem of a CD. My wife and I were fortunate enough to attend last year's unforgettable opening night at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall when Cantor Garfein debuted the marvelous mix of Golden Chants while showcasing the remarkable range of her voice. Comprising a sampling of the great Jewish musical heritage over the past 350 years, this disc is indeed an ambitious undertaking by any standards, but it succeeds because of the careful selection of songs each of which is delivered with Cantor Garfein's unmistakable pitch . . . and passion. Of the 15 tracks my overall favorite is Lechi Lach, "You shall be a blessing," simply one of the loveliest tunes you'll ever hear. The Cantor's informative liner notes, describing the history of Jewish music in America, are another huge plus. How much am I enjoying this music? In my car's CD player I have 6 discs in current rotation: La Boheme, U2, Springsteen, Coldplay and now Cantor Garfein's Golden Chants.
Musical Treasures Sparklingly Performed.......2006-01-13
Among the treasures consistently packed for travel to America by generations of Jewish immigrants has been their traditional music. This hour-long CD uses that music as the vehicle to telescope American Jewry's taking root and blossoming in the "goldeneh medina". Reaching back through the centuries and extracting significant and enduring liturgical pieces, the program incorporates more contemporary works, reflects the impact of Yiddish theater, and reveals the influence of Jewish music and musicians on Broadway. Intelligent liner notes enhance the thoughtful selection and progression of the works, each compellingly and exquisitely performed by Cantor Rebecca Garfein. The Cantor, arranger Jonathan Faiman, the additional musicians, and choir have created a memorable and meaningful recording.
programmatically and musically beautiful.......2006-01-13
In addition to Cantor Garfein's obvious vocal talent, this is an incredible programmatic album. It includes a range of musical styles that capture the history of Jewish Music in America at various times and of various traditions. This album is a pleasure to listen to, and clearly well researched. I recommend it to anyone intersted in Jewish music.
Golden Chants.......2005-12-28
As a retired music columnist for the Atlanticville a weekly newpaper in Long Branch, NJ listening to this CD is a genuine delight. It has a collectio of Jewish music spanning 359 years. There are also stirring renditions o JErome Kern and an inspiring concluding performance of "God Bless America" which makes one proud to be an American. My husband and I listen to the CD every morning and each experience is moving. The selections show the diversity and virtuosity of the performers. Buy the CD and be inspired. Lois A. Leibow

Album Description
The long awaited release by Screaming Headless Torsos is a powerful mélange of the incredibly funky and original jazz-rock that made their name as "Musicians' Musicians" - fantastically played, but totally burning. Not afraid to rock out, Torsos combine their soul, rock and jazz in exceptionally brilliant and unique ways. Screaming Headless Torsos is the brainchild of mad-scientist guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, and began in 1984 as a punk-funk-reggae-opera band. In 1990 they added vocalist extraordinaire Dean Bowman and began their original take on avant-funk rock. The Torsos exceptionally high energy and virtuosic musicianship inspired fans, other musicians, and numbers of cover bands all over the world, becoming a cult phenomena with their first CD "1995" (released originally on Warner-Discovery Records). Their 1996 "Live!!" CD further proved their incredible ability and creativity and has been chosen repeatedly for "Best of All Time" lists from prominent publications worldwide. The band's newest effort, "2005" is their ten year celebration of the unique musical chemistry of their iconoclastic and sometimes wacky artistry. The musicians of the Torsos are all incredible players in their own right, who have collectively played with many of the biggest names in the pop and jazz worlds. Bassist Fima Ephron is the big bottom of the group, with a fluid and fat sound that grounds the highly percussive music. Percussionist Daniel Sadownick, the "secret weapon" of the band, using everything from squeezy toys to burning congas, powers the whole band with his passionate playing. Star drummer Gene Lake is simply one of the best drummers playing today, with extreme chops and supremely funky pocket. With special guest vocals by soul-rock vocalist Freedom Bremner.
