It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast two minutes on average. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Love every minute of it :).......2007-07-09

Although extremely short (16 minutes and 19 seconds), "A Lesson in Crime" is good from start to finish. Since there are only seven songs, there isn't room for any filler. Very fast-paced, fun and catchy...buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-15

I bought this EP knowing nothing about the band and without having read any reviews. It turned out to be a wise impulse buy. I love this CD. Lots of energy, quirkiness, catchiness, and no fluff. As for those who complain about the brevity of this release and the price: [1] it's an EP, not a full length CD [2] great music is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - but not an album!.......2007-02-08

This is a really fantastic EP. But it's an EP! The other reviewers don't seem to be familiar with the concept of the EP. It's not a full length album! The album's out sometime 2007.

4 out of 5 stars Cheer it on.......2006-12-23

I was skeptical about this band at first after hearing different kinds of hype from different kinds of people.
But I must say that I'm very impressed with this band.
Their music is innovative and interesting.
It's music that I can continuously go back to.

I'd really rate it at 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Also check out their Tour EP with acoustic versions of a few of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars Dystopia set to music.......2006-12-19

I'm usually a person who likes mellow rock, but this album is just too flawless not to love. The beats are practically addicting, and the lyrics are interesting and thought laden. Definately something to keep you going at your 9-5 job or especially when you're up til 2 writing a paper. It does seem to be overpriced here, but if you're like me, you find your music by other methods. Tokyo Police Club has a unique sound, and is def. worth the money. (They don't sound like imitations of Bloc Party or the Strokes)

See You on the Moon is a willfully weird kids' disc compiled by a way-cool Canadian label enterprising enough to capitalize on its regional cachet. As such, listeners will encounter a lot of unapologetic hispterism here: Sufjan Stevens half-whispers his plucky, life-affirming contribution, "The Friendly Beasts"; the revolving north-of-the-border collective Broken Social Scene repurposes "Puff the Magic Dragon" as a lovely dirge; Fembots turn in what's ultimately a bunch of scary chicken squawks over an insistent rock guitar chord on "Under The Bed" (this particular track could freak out a kid with a vivid imagination); and, on "Fruit Belt," Kid Koala comes across as a classic girl group forced to vibe to a 9-year-old playing homemade instruments from beneath a tent of wool blankets. These are not the disc's finest moments. Those will be found on tracks performed by lesser-known talents. Anybody who can belt '70s TV themes word-for-word will fall instantly for the title track, by The Great Lake Swimmers, and Rosie Thomas gets the mommy voice just right--a little Shawn Colvin, a little Sarah McLachlan--on the imaginative, fantastical "Faith's Silver Elephant." Also fun are three brief intermissions by Montag, which lend this CD a charmingly goofball theatricality. Pick it up. --Tammy La Gorce

Out Of Sight, with scraping, doomed halted guitar/drum rhythm, I'm hooked. The track and album are doomed to overplay in this house for a long time. Maybe it's reminiscent of Quicksand. I imagine, a modern amalgam of the songs Can Opener, Baphomet and Transparent from Slip.

This is probably one of the best albums I've bought this year, and I've bought literally hundreds - i own more music that can be healthy. Seriously, it's such a good album.

The start is a little decieveing. Bridge to Terabithia opens with a slow riff on guitar, then bursts into full on rock. The album then follows suit in a similar vein. Broken Plates is a great song, which took me a few listens to like at first, but it's probably my fave. Wild Gardens is a little different, more melodic, and then it's back to the hard stuff in 22.

The album's only letdown has to be Carnival in Spain, which is a bit...weird...but then the final four songs make up for that.

Definitely worth buying if you're a fan of Hole or Nirvana. There's a certain grunginess to this album that you just fall in love with after a while. Get this. It's good.

3 out of 5 stars This is no Stars!!.......2006-02-11

Torquil's Memphis's I Dreamed we Fell Apart starts off great with Second Summer, in true Stars mode. After that there are two nice songs For Anyone 18 and Into the Wild that blend well together. After that things seem to veer into a monotonous swirl of sounds that are really not all that interesting. It doesn't pick up again until the track "Nada" and their rendition of the Pet Shop Boys "Love comes Quickly" comes and saves it from me never playing this cd again. In summary there are some great things about this CD but not enough to save it from going in my CD storage box for the next 2 years until I re-sell it.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the band "Stars", then you're gonna dig this..........2004-12-21

It's easy to picture Torquil Campbell with a glass of red wine in one hand and a quill in the other. The frontman for soft-focus popsters Stars plays the part of hopeless romantic yet again with Memphis, his side project with multi-instrumentalist Chris Dumont. The duo released an EP back in 2002, but only got around to recording this debut full-length last summer, calling on friends like Metric's James Shaw and Stars' Pat McGee.I Dreamed We Fell Apart starts out light and airy with acoustic guitars shimmering over an electro template ("The Second Summer"), like Belle and Sebastian slow-dancing with Nick Drake. It's a fine setting for Campbell's sigh of a voice, but his knack for tempering sweetness with a side of bitter kicks in through the centre of the album, with darker, sinister pieces like "East Van." The effervescent cover of the Pet Shop Boys' "Love Comes Quickly" is an inspired paean to falling head over heels. This is a swoony set of chilled-out bliss -- like the last hazy days of summer as they melt into fall.

On saturday december 11, 2004 we saw Memphis playing at Rothko (new york lower east side bar) and it was amazing, a wonderful performance filled with colors and sounds. It reminds me of bands such as Sigur Ros or Clinic but Memphis has their own nature, some sort of psychedelic beauty. Check it out (^_^) !

    4 out of 5 stars say what?.......2004-12-24

Quick: Listen to Devo's "Girl U Want" in your head. Go ahead, it's a great song; you deserve a nice break. Her aroma of undefined love, your mouth watering... can you picture her yet? Time to pop in Magneta Lane's The Constant Lover; their sound brings to mind that exact muse, and seeks to worship her just the same.

One part Chrissie Hynde, one part Debbie Harry, the retro feel and dominating vocal style of Magneta Lane is undeniably attractive. While you may wince at the possibility of yet another Karen O. wannabe on the scene, rest assured that Lexi, Nadia and French trade in any coquettishness for brazen, tough-as-nails power.

Describing themselves as "a potent antidote to the faux punk posturing of today's manufactured young rock bands," they certainly hit the nail on the head. It's nice to hear a trio of girls rocking out without compromise. Their decisive stance - knowing that they take exactly what they want, without any backtalk - brings a whole other level of energy to their substantial, Runaways-inspired beat.

The titular single, "The Constant Lover," is unexpectedly perfect. It labels them immediately as intelligent upstarts, filled of edgy, contagious femme rock. It shows a punk heart and a pop soul, lip gloss and bruises - one of the EP's best qualities is that it's black and blue and pink all over.

Following up with the throaty, artistic "Kissing is Easy," we feel that they're insulted by boredom and inspired by sex. One could imagine Blondie dripping such sweaty, sparkling little beads from her skin, and this is to the band's great credit.

Meanwhile, on "Medusa," they show that their tunes are not always easy to swallow - their willingness and ability to put up a challenge in the form of pointed pacing, raw vocals and masculine swagger gives them further depth and appeal. While it would have been easy to pattern themselves exactly to their current or former female peers, they nobly twist expectations. It's enough to make you really listen, which is a fact that should speak well for itself.

Each track proves itself, and the band's ability, time and again. "Their Party Days" reminds us that Belinda Carlisle used to be Dottie Danger back in the good old days; "Mare of the Night" rocks without pretense, digging nails into broken flesh, all the while blowing kisses with dark and buzzing discontent; "Ugly Socialite" emits a lazy promiscuity a thousand times smarter than its prey. Before you realize you've been taken, you get wrapped around Magneta Lane's little finger and have fallen victim to six perfectly manipulative, gratifying feminine wiles. After all, there is rarely a more potent aphrodisiac than power.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh, like, holy S**T!.......2004-12-21

Forget those trite Lolita comparisons, this Toronto trio is more than just a bunch of underage femme fatales. The three young women of Magneta Lane (the entire band is under the age of 20) play smart, sultry pop music that is as infectious as it is venomous. The is no play-acting, as singer-guitarist Lexi Valentine's world weary vocals become a soundboard for the dissatisfied youth. Accompanied by French (bass) and Nadia King (drums), the band clicks and hisses through the six songs of The Constant Lover with maturity and sophisticated glamour. Seducing the ghosts of The Kinks and The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, while having a moody pop sensibility not unlike fellow Torontonians Tangiers. Magneta Lane is like a well-worn motorcycle jacket - classic, soft -to-the-touch, but undeniably tough.

Controller.Controller is a burgeoning band with roots in Toronto, Canada and represents another fine example of the perpetually fertile grounds of talent blooming from the Great White North. Measure for measure, you will find yourself enamored by this album if your tastes gravitate towards similar genre-busters like The Rapture, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Stills. The grooves are solid, the rhythm punchy, and singer Nirmala Basnayake's vocal package is honest, passionate, authoritative, and endearing. With enough exposure, this band has the all the ingredients to become relevant and purposeful in today's world of modern rock.

It was such a downer when this CD came out after the last two EP releases on Dumb-Unit and Festplatten. Some bands start out raw and weak then progress, here I think The Uncut did just the opposite. Actually, their earlier material was rather raw and minimal (very similar to early New Order both in guitar work and vocal delivery). If you can find a way to buy or download their "Understanding The New Violence" vinyl EP or the "Devotion/Fluent And Pure/Over The Edge" EP, please do for they indeed rock! Certainly their earlier sound is evident in the track "Understanding the New Violence," so if you like how that song sounds, go for the earlier material by this band that had a lot of potential before muddying things up.

3 out of 5 stars Better than bad. .......2005-12-30

I was going to tell myself not to compare this band to Interpol. But I just can't help myself. The best song on this album is Understanding the New Violence. The reason it is the best song is because it sounds most like Interpol. The rest of this album sounds like a up and coming band hoping one day to open for the bigger and better Interpol. I do enjoy this album however. It is not as hipnotic as Interpol, but it is good. There are some high points. Alot of it is very bland however. Its really had to explain. I would recommend this for any fan of Interpol. Its worth a listen. I will be very interested if they can follow this up with something great. I can tell they have great things to come.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive, good 'background music'.......2005-04-01

I bought this cd after hearing the second half of 'understanding the new volience' on TV (yes, Muchmusic does play indie bands on it's network every leap year)and purchased the album thinking it would be more driven by guitar riffs. The problem is that it tends to be a bit repetitive (especially the single)and it straddles that uneasy fence between 'pop dance music sound' and rock. Also, the vocalists style of muttering the lyrics as opposed to singing them also adds to the cd's misgivings. If you're into the types of bands that make up the bulk of Paperbag Records artists than you won't be disappointed, but for those of want a more harder and complex rock album look elsewhere.

There are no other reviews of this album, which is a shame because that likely means nobody else is buying it, which is a shame because that likely means nobody else is listening to it. Comparisons: let's see... Amazon says that people who looked at this also looked at bands like !!!, Death From Above 1979, and Ambulance LTD (as well as others that I have no frame of reference for). Those people are likely to be disappointed. Another website lists Interpol, Joy Division, and And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. That's closer. I would also posit references to the new dance-rock craze that's going around now (ie, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, etc). But less explicity dance, more "Just guitars, please." Also, singer Ian Worang isn't quite singing, but neither is he mumbling or talking; he's just unconcerned about making his vocals the center of the songs. It works really well, giving it a bit of a subdued feeling. Anyways, I was hooked after hearing track 2, Understanding the New Violence. This is practically the only thing I've listened to for the last month, and I'm still hooked. I don't give glowing reviews of much, but I LOVE Uncut.
