It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-CD, 36-song collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, 2002's The Essential Johnny Cash--part of a series of compilations and reissues celebrating Cash's 70th birthday--does present three-dozen satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these 36 selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism. Cuts range from '50s Sun rockabilly classics like "Hey Porter" and "I Walk the Line" to '60s country-folk gems like "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and Cash's memorable duet with Bob Dylan on Dylan's "Girl from the North Country." Also included are more recent samplings of Cash's celebrated collaborations, including "Highwayman," which he recorded in 1984 with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as part of the on-again, off-again supergroup the Highwaymen, and "The Wanderer," a fervent gospel collaboration with U2 that appeared on the band's 1993 album, Zooropa. --Bob Allen

All of the favorites!.......2007-05-17
This is a great 2-CD set if you are a Johnny Cash fan and want as many hits as you can get without buying the box set! I got the Essential Johnny Cash for my Dad at Christmas last year and listened to it on a trip with him. I loved the movie Walk the Line and this CD made me go out and buy the box set for myself. I admit I like this CD better thna the box set as I find myself switching CD's too much with the box set. There are 4 CD's with the box set where this one has two. the boxed set also has a lot of gospel song by Johnny Cash, which I didn't like as much. But the Essential Johnny Cash did have a couple of the gospel songs that I did like. So if you are a Johnny Cash fan, or think you are becoming one, I highly recommend The Essential Johnny Cash 2-CD set. It has all the songs you'll need and love! Like me, you may even discover some you never knew you'd love.
Perfect Intro to Johnny Cash!.......2007-05-14
What can you say? It's Johnny Cash and he's great. What I like most about this CD is that it introduced me to songs of his that I had never heard of such as 'Hey Porter'. You can hear Cash's personality and humor in his music. Buy it, you'll like it.
Best Cash CD Compilation.......2007-05-12
If you are going to have 1 Johnny Cash CD Set.. this is it. Period..
The Essential Johnny Cash.......2007-05-02
The cd The Essential Johnny Cash is based on his songs and music like Ring of Fire and A Boy Named Sue. The instrument that plays in Ring Of Fire is a trumphet that is high brass and for A Boy Named Sue is a giutar that is loud. The thing that brings out the songs is that he`s a musician and talented. His attidude was bad sometimes because of drugs he was taking. Like always Johnny Cash will always be sensation as a true good, sensation singer known as the Man in Black and for his music.
Essential.......2007-04-12
The A-side has a fine selection of tunes that bring back classic moments from Johnny Cash. However, on the flip, songs like "If I Were a Carpenter" and "It Ain't Me Babe" (there are others) make this comp less than completely "essential." Of course, there's a dozen compilations of various size, and everybody has their favorites. But in terms of presenting the essential tracks by Johnny Cash, this record goes only two-thirds of the way.
The good news is that listeners have abundant choices - and who know, maybe for a sizable plurallity, this selection might indeed be essential enough. Having been through a few comps, I've found that you have to pick and choose to find the perfect record.

Two discs of music don't exactly provide for a thorough overview of four decades of recording, particularly if the subject of the retrospective is one of the most important and prolific performers of his time. So The Essential Bob Dylan definitely skates over the leagues-deep oeuvre of Dylan, summarizing his monumental first half-dozen years in disc one and skirting over the following 34 years in disc two. Delving into Columbia's three Dylan greatest-hits packages (though curiously purging "I Want You," a genuine hit single in its day), Essential offers only a few surprises, opting for The Basement Tapes version of "Quinn the Eskimo" over the Self Portrait remake that made it onto Greatest Hits Volume II and tossing in "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack for completists. But this 30-track overview is designed with newcomers, not Dylanologists, in mind. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
The Essential Bob Dylan is essential.......2007-03-01
Glad I bought this. I'm trying to replace the old vinyl albums I once had and this is a good start to my new collection of Dylan CDs. It satisfies the immediate need until I can afford all of the replacements.
Essential To American Culture.......2007-02-23
Bob Dylan is the greatest living American composer. As essential to his generation as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were to theirs and sure to be remembered with the same reverence. This is a great collection of most of his finest work -- all remastered. An avid Dylan fan, I can't help but notice the absence of some of my favorites, like Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, from Nashville Skyline and One More Cup Of Coffee, from Desire. I guess I would have liked to see a three disk Essential -- he certainly deserves one. That said, it is hard to argue with the song selections. For example, other than the original Greatest Hits collection, which was originally released in the '60's, this is the only other place you can find Positively 4th Street -- his follow-up single to Like A Rolling Stone.
If you want to purchase one disk for your CD collection that best represents Bob Dylan's body of work, this is the one to get.
Complete Dylan.......2007-01-16
This is the most complete of all the Dylan recordings I have and that dates back to the 60's.
Like The Old Days, Only Better.......2006-12-03
This is an excellent collection for those who were Dylan fans back in the sixties. Those of us in the room the first time I played these CDs could sing along with every single song. There isn't a bum tune in the bunch. But unlike those old records I have boxed up in the garage, all cuts sound clean.
I don't have anything profoud to say. I just want to recommend this collection to any old Dylan fans who want to hear it all again -- without the scratches.
"She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind" from Not Dark Yet........2006-09-15
I'm new to Bob Dylan's music and I must say I really loved this cd. I was unsure about listening to it since I wasn't all that enamoured with Dylan's voice but when you listen to music it just clicks into place. Dylan is a master at lyrics and mood. Each song has a unique mood or message that he conveys in what seems like an effortless manner. I fell in love with some of his songs of heartbreak and change.
This compilation is broken into two disks. disk one covers music originally recorded from 1962-1967 and disk two covers music originally recorded from 1969-1999. Bob Dylan life time of music is rather prolific so creating a compilation of his music into two disks must have been a huge undertaking but from a novice Dylan fan I think a great job was done.
I can say with out a doubt that disk one, which covers `62-67, is my favorite from the two although I loved both but I find myself listening to disk one over and over. I have been very moved by his deep emotion on unrealized love with "Don't think twice, It's all Right" and his reflection on every day struggles with "Subterranean Homesick Blues". So many of the songs on the first disc most people have heard recorded by other artists like "Mr. Tambourine Man", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Quinn The Eskimo" which speaks to his wonderful writing and appeal to other musical artists.
Disk two brought more great songs but they have a different feel to them, some how more impassioned and sensual with a touch of humility on life. You see the sensual side in "Lay Lady Lay" and impassioned views on justice with "Hurricane". There is even a little sadness in the second disc, you have to wonder how difficult the 1970's were for Dylan to be able to write so many songs that echoed in the hearts of others. Maybe that's why I like disc one.....less sad. I have to give a big shout out for songs like "I Shall be Released", "Tangled Up In Blue", and "Jokerman".
As I said before, I'm new to Bob Dylan's music but I can also say I am now a huge fan. I'd also like to mention the song "Not Dark Yet" from the second disc, it speaks of a soulful reflective Bob Dylan that I find quite nice.
Great writing, great feeling, great music.

Vastly expanding 1995's single disc Greatest Hits, The Essential Bruce Springsteen easily surpasses the earlier best-of set by serving up all its true essentials and tossing in less appreciated treats and a full disc of rarities. Disc one spans the first decade of Springsteen's recording career, serving up at least two tracks each from the six albums that laid the groundwork for his '80s burst into superstardom. Disc two picks up with his mainstream breakthrough, 1984's Born in the U.S.A., and carries on through 2002's The Rising, tossing in live recordings of "American Skin" and "Land of Hope and Dreams" for good measure. The selections and sequencing surpass those made on Greatest Hits, though there's not too much in the way of surprises, other than that it appears that Born in the U.S.A. hasn't aged all that well for the Boss; here, he selects only three songs from the hit-laden smash, one fewer than is found on the skimpy Greatest Hits. Disc three is where the fun really starts for all but neophytes. The live "Held Up Without a Gun" is as gutsy a one minute and 20 seconds as Springsteen as one could ask for, and the likes of "Trapped," "Countin' on a Miracle," and a cover of "Viva Las Vegas" rank with his signature songs. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
A great collection of Bruce's "best" songs.......2007-05-30
This is a great collection of songs by The Boss for those who haven't bought Springsteen CDs/records before. I bought it for my 11-year old son who is getting interested in rock music. Maybe this collection missed a hidden diamond along the way, but overall all the great Springsteen songs going back to the 70's are included.
Honey, I want the heart/I want the soul/I want control right now.......2007-03-04
(Those're Mr. Springsteen's words up there, not mine, but I wholeheartedly agree.)
I know that Springsteen fans will argue over and over about what should be included in an "essential" collection of the artist's work, but this collection is, in my opinion, absolutely superb. It's also a great introduction to his work for those people who don't know much about his style or range. It's impossible to release a collection that contains all the heart and soul, but this is a good start.
I know that many people will think it's kind of an extended greatest hits collection, but with Springsteen--oh, man. It doesn't matter if his songs are popular hits; that shouldn't turn you off of his music. His songs become hits because people connect fully with what he wrote and crafted, as well as with the man himself. Take "Born in the USA," for example. You can look at the song as something people mistakenly turned into an anthem (and therefore something that doesn't belong in this collection), or you can look at it as the catalyst for many fan's snickers and disdain aimed at politicians who tried to do the anthem thing and put Springsteen squarely on their side. Springsteen crafted a satirical song, and he always treated it that way in concert. So, stop thinking of a Springsteen "hit" as in any way similar to, say, a Backstreet Boys "hit," and you'll be okay. If that were all this collection contained--just the hits, ma'am--this would still be superb.
But it contains more. It contains songs from albums that weren't so wildly popular, and previously unreleased songs that give you glimpses into other sides of the man and his influences (there's a third bonus disc that provides us with some stuff we likely have never heard before).
Buy this collection; hear this man sing of 70's gang fights, of what it means to be truly free when your world seems to be nothing but limitation, of faith in the human spirit, of learning how to be a partner in a relationship. Read (and reread, as I do) the lyrics. Remember that this man performs with all his heart and soul up on stage, just like in the studio recordings, and be amazed by how damn much this guy LOVES to sing, record, and perform. Then, if you don't already own the rest of his stuff, buy all the other cd's so you can see the depth of his emotional range. Then, with all that wonderful music playing in your head, you'll have the heart, the soul. Or at least, you'll have Mr. Springsteen's, since he's singularly eager to expose those parts of himself to you in his music.
Enjoy!
Not quite.......2007-02-02
Before purchasing this, you might want to compare the record company's "essentials" with a true fan's list and see if songs you forgot about (and want to own) are missing. And I'm not talking about the list from the guy who complained for three paragraphs about which obscure songs weren't included. The title is "the ESSENTIAL Bruce Springsteen," not "Some Guy's Personal Favorites."
So, I've included a list of what would be considered ESSENTIAL songs. These are not necessarily my favorites, but HIT singles, significant cuts, and the obvious best songs from each album.
NOT FOR: If you have most of these songs in your music collection, you don't need this CD or the Essentials, for sure.
RECOMMENDED FOR: ...those who don't care that they're missing the many great songs I've listed here that aren't on the actual CDs (compare my list with theirs-- if they left out a lot of songs you like, buy "Born to Run" and wait for the inevitable "Very, Very Best of Bruce Springsteen!")

Disc: 2 Here's where the problems really start. Disc 2 is almost a disaster. Ex.: "Born in the USA" features a whopping SEVEN top ten singles, only three of which are on these CDs. I think most people buying this collection would consider at LEAST 4 or 5 of them among the songs they'd buy this for, so where the hell are they? I've reinstated them on my list.

Stones.......2006-12-07
A master's work.
The best song on all three disks is definitively Born To Run.
There is none other.
However, I think that Springsteen's live work is much
more spectacular.
A decent Boss compilation.......2006-08-07
The Boss was one of the greatest hard rockers besides Tom petty.
He rocks really hard in tracks including Born in the usa, Glory days, and Human touch. Get this with albums from Dire Straits, Metallica, Nirvana, GNR, Green Day, and Foreigner but avoid awful bands like Boston, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Lynyrd Skynyrd who suck big time.

Elvis Lives.......2007-06-10
I enjoy listening to Elvis. This CD has so many of my favorites. If you are an Elvis fan, this CD is a must for your collection.
None Better.......2007-01-29
The Essentials series is to music what the Criterion Collection is to movies. They are quite simply the most comprehensive, highest quality collections available for the greatest music performers of all time. And The Essential Elvis Presley is no different. It is the best Elvis collection on the market.
Certainly there are other recent collections that are great in their own right but none delivers quite like this fantastic collection. 2nd To None, for example, omits "All Shook Up," "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling In Love," and "Hound Dog," amongst others. Then there's 30 #1 Hits, which is missing "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Viva Las Vegas." But that is an inherent problem with any collection of number one hits; not all number ones hold up as well over time as other songs that never reached the top of the charts.
The Essential Elvis Presley, on the other hand, has no glaring omissions at all. The diehard Elvis fan will surely argue this claim, having found one or more underrated gems absent, but the casual fan would be hard-pressed to find fault with this collection.
Of course, you could always find two Elvis collections with all your favorites, and if you have other Elvis records already, you'll probably want to look elsewhere to complete your collection. But if you want a single collection of all your favorite Elvis songs, The Essential Elvis Presley is without a doubt the finest collection available.
One glaring omission, one glaringly bad inclusion.......2007-01-17
What were they thinking when they put this collection together? Yes, it has almost - ALMOST - all of Elvis's greatest hits but where is "One Night"? And why, why, why would they dare to include Elvis's horrendous live version of "Polk Salad Annie" and omit a classic like "One Night"? It is for that glaring omission and that glaringly bad inclusion that I give this collection a rating of 4 rather than 5. Hey, I love Elvis Presley's music as much as anyone but he had no business recording "Polk Salad Annie." There's only one version of that song that should ever be heard and that's the original by the song's writer, Tony Joe White.
Why??.......2007-01-10
I'll not spend time reviewing the songs we all know them well. I'm here to answer the question as to why another greatest hits collection??
1. This is the Elvis entry in Sony's fine "Essential" series. Certainly
Elvis merits representation.
2. Not everyone owns the other hits collections mentioned in other
reviews. New fans "discover" Elvis all the time.
Happy Birthday&Great collection.......2007-01-08
I've always Dug Elvis Presley. this is a Great Introduction collection a Double set that is on point. Suspicious Minds is My Favorite Presley song to this day. these Songs still hold up so well&Elvis's voice is the main reason. he left a distinctive impression with how he presented his take on songs. i already have Elvis collections, but this One is a very Good. a Must have.

Nearly perfect and nicely done.......2007-05-25
There are several complilation CDs of Roy Orbison
this is the latest one 2 CDS has classic
Sun Monument MGM + latter day nudges
Previous complilations concentrated on Sun and Monument hits. This is the first one that has Roy's 50's 60's 70's 80's ache/grin/sunglasses on.
This double so-called "Essential" misses some early hits found on LPs and 45s and beloved by his fans. It has rare beginings like "Ooby Dooby" and the edge of Rockabilly. Most fans have all that. It misses favorites like "In Dreams" and others that fans would shout "Essential!"
But..it also has each 60's hit and the reason that Bob Dylan/BruceSpringteen/GreenDay/Bono/U2/ all agree that Roy had that Operatic voice that could suffer/soothe and excite
No heart was ever broken so perfectly so aching so wanting to hear it again over and over
Roy had no top 40 hits after signing with MGM in 1966. He waited it out and ..
finally..
All realized the depth and breath of his vocal and passion
Then a concert where Roy was told just how much he was beloved. It is still being shown on PBS stations as a way to get folks to join up!
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a fine tribute
but those of us who love
know deeper
in dreams
This 2 CD has an included booklet that has hardly any history, few comments , no incisiveness.
and anyone who wants to know more should study.
The sound is as good as it it gets. Nicely done!
Hard to find tracks.......2007-03-22
I had most of Roy Orbison's recordings except for Ride Away and his duet with Emmy Lou Harris, That Loving you Feeling Again and they were both on this CD. Worth doubling up just for these 2 tracks.
THE ESSENTIAL ROY ORBISON.......2007-01-22
WE ENJOYED THIS CD VERY MUCH. IT HAS A LOT OF THE OLDIES AND GOODIES. IT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS TO US. FRANK AND ORENA MILLER
+1/2 -- Excellent, but missing a few essentials.......2006-11-12
By spanning Orbison's recordings for Sun, Monument, MGM, Virgin and some odds and ends from soundtracks and Oribson's own label, this 2-CD collection a broad look yet at his entire thirty-six year career. But even with this wealth of material, there are some Orbison essentials that are unaccounted for.
The choice to stick with solo-titled works leaves out Orbison's pre-Sun recordings with The Teen Kings (including the original Je-Wel version of "Ooby Dooby" - the remake for Sun is represented here) and later success with The Traveling Wilburys. More striking is the choice to include late-80s comeback remakes of "Running Scared" and "In Dreams" in lieu of the early-60s Monument originals. While there's academic interest in hearing Orbison recreate his early classics, it's no substitute for hearing the actual early classics. Also MIA are any tracks from Orbison's meager post-Sun output for MCA.
That said, the sides that are included here are generally terrific. Disc 1 focuses on Orbison's first rush of fame, from his somewhat uncomfortable sides for Sun, though his incredible run on Monument into the mid-60s. The Monument sides are breathtaking, with co-writer Joe Melson and producer Fred Foster helping to create the pop-operatic style that would propel Orbison up the charts. Disc 2 includes a few of Orbison's mid-to-late '60s singles for MGM, but focuses more deeply on his late '80s comeback on Virgin. The balance actually works, as Orbison's Monument albums were often stacked with hits and lesser material; providing a deeper look at his comeback drives home just how strongly he held up as an artist.
Were it not for the glaring omissions of "Running Scared" and "In Dreams" in their original format, this would be five stars. Their replacement with comeback covers was a mistake, and leaves this collection without all of the essentials. Fans of Oribson's Monument catalog should look up the reissues of his three original Monument albums, each remastered in superb stereo and augmented with bonus tracks. Those wanting to cherry-pick the hits will enjoy this set, but may feel short-changed by the pair of remakes. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
The best Roy Orbison cd that you can have .......2006-08-18
The reason I say this, vis that this cd has material from jst not one company, but more then one company. There are his songs that was recorded for Sun Studios, MGM, Virgn, and Moment Records. Now it was Moment Records that proudced more Roy Orbison hits, and it was hard to believe, that before the Roy Orbison era, they only scored one hit. You have the known hits like Candy Man, Only the Lonely, Oh, Pretty Woman, Blue Bayou, Leah, Sweet Dream Baby, Running Scared, Crying, It's Over, Go, Go, Go (Down the Line), Ooby Dooby, and In Dreams. The cd starts off with 3 songs that was recorded by Roy Orbison and the Teen Kings, and they are Oooby Doby, Go, Go, Go (Down the Line), and a very rarely hard song called "Rock House". And then it gets into songs that he recorded for Moment Records, which finishes off disc 1, and then moves on to Disc 2, where you 3 songs from his last album called "Mystery Girl", and they are You Got It, She's a Mystery to Me, and Californa Blue. And then you have some of the very rarely heard songs like I metioned earlier, Rock House, Crawling Back, Best Friend, Lana, Walk On, and Ride Away. There also live verisons of his songs like Running Scared, The Comedians, and Cladette. Now I have heard Roy Orbison sing Lana when he pefromed live at Austin City Limits, and Walk On on his Greatest hits cd and dvd, and then there are the ones that I have never heard of, and might not have if not for this cd. Now I am used to hearing Only the Lonely, the first song on either a live album, or a cd that is made of his studio recordings, or even the filmed concerts that we do have of Roy Orbison. The trickets part of this cd, is getting to disck 2, the little door, that they have closed, that they have the other disc closed in, and I am not used to having 2 cds, when you normmaly get 1, but here you get 2 dicks for the price of one, so I hope that you will enjoy this cd, and maybe discover these little known songs for yourself.

The Essential Clash demonstrates once again how superior the Clash were to any of their punk peers. It's striking that, while the effects of the movement continue to resonate decades later, most '70s punk has dated badly. Even the great singles of the Sex Pistols, perhaps because they encapsulated the time so perfectly, do little more than remind one of 1977. But this fine 40-track double-disc collection demonstrates that the Clash's sound maintains its vitality, whether in the apocalyptic foreboding of "London Calling" or the sulking "I'm So Bored with the USA." When frontman Joe Strummer died in December 2002 at age 50, much was made of the political conscience he'd brandished throughout his career; it must be noted that appearing to be a great thinker in comparison to other rock singers is no great accomplishment. Appearing a great rock singer in comparison to other vocalists is a much more impressive achievement, and this retrospective provides irrefutable evidence of the genius of Strummer and the band he led. --Andrew Mueller

The Best Clash Compilation, to date........2007-01-25
If you're looking for a complete, full anthology of The Clash, this is the one to get. It's got all the hits, plus some minor hits, it's simply the best collection of them that you will find, so far. The sound is excellent, too. If you love good 70s-80's punk and pop you'll love this! :)
A great collection... all you really need for The Clash.......2006-12-26
This is a great collection. All the 'hits' and important songs are here. Some of the second half of disc two is a little slow, especially the stuff from Cut the Crap, but great all the same. And for those who say this isn't punk, they may think that because it doesn't sound like 'punk' should (what should punk sound like?), because this is the most original punk. The Clash was a punk band whose sound evolved as their talents evolved.
The clash is a pop band, not a punk band !!!.......2006-11-09
It's clear than many of thoses song have been written for radio... The Clash are to Punk what Poison are to Metal !!! You woN,t find real punk music here, only early 80 pop songs... If you are looking for punk, try The Sex Pistols, The Ramones or The Stooges, but not the Clash...
The only CD set you'll ever need.......2006-02-26
I didn't know I was a Clash fan until I bought this CD set. I went to the store and saw it on the rack. There were four songs that I already knew and figured there'd be at least a few more I would like so I bought it. Out of the 40 songs, I can listen to atleast 22 over and over and over again and never get sick of them! I copied the my favorite songs onto another disk and put it in my car's CD player... I haven't put another disk in in over six months. For the amount of great music you'll get, there isn't a better value out there.
The Beatles of Punk.......2006-01-23
Out of all the classic punk-rock groups, the Clash were the most skilled, most important, and best. From their days of loud, intense screaming which you can barely understand (White Riot, London's Burning, Complete Control) to the London Calling/Sandinista! (not sure if I spelt that right) era, when they were experimenting with everything, to their last days, the Essential Clash covers the Clash perfectly, with very few fillers.
The Clash, for all of their anger, had a sense of humor. For good examples, I recommend London's Burning, Complete Control ("You're my guitar hero!"), Career Opprotunities and several others. But they also had a good amount of righteous, politically-driven FURY, songs like Hate & War, I'm So Bored with the U.S.A, White Riot, London Calling, the Magnificent Seven and Rock the Casbah. Plus they could unload finely crafted pop (Train In Vain) or simply cut loose and have a good time (Should I Stay or Should I Go), all while adding elements of reggae, funk, soul and even rap to the ever-expanding punk scene. Too bad it sort of died...oh well. The point is, this is a great album.

The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd played by their own set of rules. Fiercely defensive of their Southern heritage, Ronnie Van Zant and company reflexively lashed out when they thought they'd been slurred. Hence "Sweet Home Alabama," their retort to Neil Young's shame-on-Dixie "Alabama." (Young loved Skynyrd's screed, even though it lambasted him by name.) On the other hand, "Saturday Night Special" took on handguns; it's hard to imagine a contemporary band with a redneck-rock following taking a similar pro-gun-control stand. This two-disc overview presents a band with a broader agenda than one might imagine. Yes, this is state-of-the-'70s electric boogie, but it's three-guitar-strong rock with genuine subject matter. Fans will already have the likes of "Free Bird" (here presented in studio and concert settings) and "I Know a Little," but baubles such as the previously unreleased "Comin' Home" and the rare B-side "Mr. Banker" add to this collection's appeal, as does the lengthy liner essay. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it !!!!.......2007-01-09
I didn't think I was a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but after listening to the CD I'm hooked. Free Bird (studio and the live version) was just awesome.
With all the hits it has on it, it is a great CD to have.
One of the BEST!!!.......2006-08-28
This is one of the best Skynyrd cd's out there. If you like Metallica then that explains you ignorance! Then again I'm sure you can't be older than 18. FYI...a true music lover loves ALL music, you're just a little boy who likes music.
A must for those just starting out on Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2006-08-16
This 2-disc compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's library of songs is a very good collection of tracks for those just starting out on this most American of rock bands. Though Lynyrd Skynyrd may not have had the virtuoso guitar playing that The Allman Brothers band had (and which band does) or the heavy, southern blues-rock sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival, what they did have was the songwriting of its great frontman Ronnie Van Zant.
Lynyrd Skynyrd took the dueling lead guitar style pioneered by Thin Lizzy and perfected by The Allman Brothers Band's Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, and did them one better by having three lead guitarists in Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington. This gave Lynyrd Skynyrd a distinct overdriven blues-rock sound that when mixed with true Southern rock style made the band the definitive Southern rock band. This compilation includes their classic track "Sweet Home Alabama" and one of the most played power ballads (Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" being first and foremost) in "Free Bird" (both the album and even longer live concert version). Other tracks I'd like to point out are "The ballad of Curtis Loew", "Comin' Home", and "Simple Man".
This collection really doesn't have a bad track to it. It's a very good starting off point for anyone just starting to listen to this great Southern Rock band. Those needing to listen to the bands other songs would then be free to check out their full albums.

There willl never be another like him........2006-09-15
I truly believe that Marty Robbins was one of the most talented men ever to walk this good earth. His voice is a wondrous musical instrument that charms and thrills listeners with it's sensitivity and sincerity. That he wrote so much of his output is proof of his god given talent and the sheer variety and versatility he displays are quite astonishing. You can imagine Marty in the studio deliberately recording something entirely different from the previous release knowing that he would wow his wide fan base. There are all kinds of songs on this album sung by a man who loved to sing; you just have to listen to the voice and know this is so. There will NEVER be another like him.
A Fine compilation.......2006-08-24
Here's a good compilation of Marty Robbins' recordings. Beginning with his Do-Wop 1950's Rock-n-Roll sound, to his famous western ballads, and on up to his work on "Honky Tonk Man". All in all, a very good collection, although there are obviously some songs that could've been provided (for instance, where is "The Chair"?). The sound on this 2-CD set is great, no complaints there. Well worth your money and ear. B+
Wonderful Collection!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-18
I can't reccomend this collection enough. The last thing you'll
do is waste your money. The new country cd's are a waste of money. There's only a few songs I don't like on this one. It's
confusing though to have 2 Essential Marty Robbins (One's a Box Set. The other one's not) I have both. I'm only 39 yrs old & I love his music. You won't be dissapointed
Great Album to Remember Marty Robbins.......2006-07-17
A must have for collectors, either early rock and roll or country. Recommend the Marty Robbins Anthology for a good glimpse of a really great singer and song writer.
The Essential Marty Robbins.......2006-07-09
Just what I wanted. When you hear his very early songs you realize just how he matured into such a great artist. Lots of stuff I had not heard before.

Rhythm and noise duke it out for the listener's attention on Little Richard's classic Specialty records. The future reverend chants and screams his often surreal--they used to call it "nonsensical"--tales of life ("Tutti Frutti"), love ("Jenny Jenny"), and rock ("Ready Teddy") over pounding piano, thumping drums, and one of the greatest horn presences (both ensemble and solo) in the history of 20th-century music. this disc makes his case better than the written word ever could, though. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Goes on too long but has some of his best.......2006-09-01
The compilation CD, The Essential Little Richard, documents the career of one of the founders of rock 'n' roll. Little Richard is known for his high impact, energetic performances of "Tutti Fruiti," "Good Golly, Miss Molly," and "Long Tall Sally." Among others, the Beatles covered "Long Tall Sally" in 1964. This CD has many of the songs Little Richard was best known for. Unfortunately, the album doesn't stop there.
Controversial from the start, Little Richard had a style no one has managed to imitate, although many have tried. He can't be parodied, since he was something of a parody himself. Either banging away at a piano or just jumping into the air as he sang, Little Richard was impossible not to stare at. With lyrics echoing words meaninglessly ("Slippin' and a-slidin', peepin' and a-hidin'"), messages could be forgotten. I saw Little Richard live when I was twenty, and watched him in amazement for forty-five minutes. Leaping during every line he sang, he spent more time in the air than on the ground. If you could turn him into a power source, you could run the Hoover Dam.
Little Richard emerges best in "The Girl Can't Help It," where a backup male chorus supports his vocals. But listening to 20 tracks by him in a row is like visiting a circus sideshow: fascinating but quickly wearing out its welcome. The CD would have been more effective at twelve tracks.
Great Music.......2006-08-14
Since I will be attending a concert by Little Richard in October, I wanted to refresh my memory. The CD is great and brought back old memories from my junior high school years. A great CD.
The Music Of My Feckless Youth..........2006-02-24
All of Little Richard's best-known tunes and a few lesser-known ones. His distinctive style can get a little tedious but tossing this disk into a multi-CD player with other 50's greats makes for a really great nostalgia-fest.
A Rock And Roll Original.......2005-02-26
This is a fine collection of the songs Little Richard recorded for the Specialty label.
Back in the day, Little Richard scared the hell out of middle class white American parents but the kids knew what was good!
You've got Little Richard pounding away at his piano and singing in his own inimitable style, a great sax player who sounds like he might blow out a lung at any moment and a drummer who provides the steady rockin' beat to Richard's anarchic style of rock!
The last two cuts ("Baby Face" and "Silvery Moon") are pretty tame but the rest of this album is terrific.
The songs have been digitally remastered from the original tapes and sound great.
The only minus is a lack of decent liner notes.
The REAL KING OF ROCK AND ROLL!.......2005-01-10
Little Richard is the real King of Rock n Roll. Get this wonderful collection & hear the power and energy of this legend

Elvis Presley's music in the 1970s is often dismissed as the bombastic, half-hearted hack work of an overweight, pill-addicted, badly dressed has-been. In the liner notes to this five-CD set, Dave Marsh argues that Presley, in fact, created a more impressive body of work in the '70s than almost any other pop act. And the music on this massive anthology backs Marsh up. Stripping away all the garish live recordings and album filler, the package concentrates on a core of 120 songs--the A- and B-sides of every single Presley recorded in the '70s, 46 other studio tracks (including 13 previously unreleased performances), and 27 live tracks (including another 13 unreleased tracks)--that feature a still-magnificent singer collaborating with one of the funkiest bands of its time. This body of work certainly doesn't match Presley's breakthroughs in the '50s, nor does it equal the achievements of Al Green, Neil Young, and Van Morrison in the '70s, but it does stack up well against the work of Bob Dylan and the ex-Beatles in the same decade. Even in his laziest moments, Presley was a master of intonation and phrasing, delivering his rich baritone with a disarming naturalness. And when he caught a spark from his great T.C.B. Band (anchored by guitarist James Burton and drummer Ron Tutt), Presley could still out-sing anyone in American pop. You can hear it here on inspired versions of Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie," Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working," Wayne Carson's "Always on My Mind," Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," Paul McCartney's "Lady Madonna," Percy Mayfield's "Stranger in My Own Hometown," Dennis Linde's "Burning Love," and Joe South's "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." --Geoffrey Himes

Walk a Mile in My Shoes.......2007-04-12
A great collection of Elvis music. A must have for any Elvis fan.
Elvis Is Back to LIfe!.......2006-11-10
I was listening Elvis when I was a school boy and now after 30 years I listen Elvis as if he were back to life again and singing to us. I was encouraged by Elvis' songs and again they are encouraging me now in the 21st century!
Many strong performances.......2005-09-30
Towards the end of his life, Elvis was showing signs of burnout and depression, even then, he could still rise to the occassion and belt out a great performance. This is the most comprehensive collection of his 1970's recordings available. It starts off with the classic "The Wonder Of You" and takes you right through all of the singles released before his pre-mature death, several great album cuts and alternate recordings, and a sample of his live show on the last CD. His outstanding performances on "Hurt" and "Moody Blue" show what he was capable of in the months before his death. Makes you think of what might have been...
The Kings Marvelous Last stand.......2005-07-13
Well, This following the essential 50's and 60's, is a excellant representation of the Kings final decade, from tear jerker ballads, to country, to pure rock n roll, This time period is ofte underrated, but produced many great songs for the King.An Awsome live disc displays some killer tuens and great versions of classic songs, definatly a must!!
A Great Intro to 70s Elvis.......2005-06-24
The box set contains the A and B sides to most of the Elvis singles (3 stars), the best studio out takes (4 stars), and the best of his live shows (5 stars, I know that the most you can give is 4) from the 70s. This set is definately worth having. I shows that Elvis was not a has-been in the 70s. All you have to do is listen to the live "Elvis Show" disk, and you will be blown away like I was. The power and precision in his voice were awsome.
