3 out of 5 stars GREAT SHOW !!!.......2006-03-03

And the best Gary Numan live performance ever in my opinon.Despite the dismally apalling sound (you'll really need a lot of signal reconstruction processing like a BBE or a harmonic enhancer to just make it sound acceptable) the perfomance is incredibly vital and rockier than ever due to the incredible guitarrist Kipper (some kind of Steve Stevens clone) and freshman Richard Beasley on drums, who adds an incredible percussion job to his not-as tight-as-Cedric -Sharpley drumming. No live bass this time except those few older material that keyboardist Ade Orange performs at his own risk (first time on bass.... !! )
giving most of the tracks the one note boom synthesized bass typical of that time in Numan's career. The tracklist spans his entire career, from early singles to 2 songs of the then recent Machine And Soul album. There is a VHS tape with this same show that's said to feature better sound. For the Numan initiated ONLY.

I own about a dozen Amália CDs and this is my favorite. This is "Fado" music: songs that exist only in the Lisbon area of Portugal. No other music quite like it, and nobody does them better than Amália. All music lovers should mourn her recent passing.

The Great, The Only One of such stature in her small country, died today, October 6, 1999. She was 79. She'll be buried Friday, Oct.8, but word is that after the general election scheduled for Sunday, arrangements will be made for her body to be moved to the Jerónimos Monastery, burial place of famous Portuguese like Vasco da Gama and Luiz de Camões, three of whose poems she sang.

But an extended remixes one ! I must confess I?ve never been a fan of extended remixes, but being a fan of Gary?s,and having heard so much praise about them,I decided to buy this as a sampler since it covers 4 of his Numa years?lps. The remixes have nice, powerful variations from the studio songs without departing too much from them, with the exception of the weakest version of My Dying Machine I?ve ever heard (not so bad anyway). The longer versions have catchier hooks in the form of wisely applied percussion programming and even when some are stretched to almost double lenght, you find yourself not wanting them to end. What baffles me is the inclusion of 3 (out of a total of 10) ballads on this cd.One would expect every track to be upbeat on a cd like this,so the choice of songs strike as an odd, kind of random affair.
The sound is very good;these are not remastered songs but of course the bottom end has been beefed up for the remixes.which is almost welcome.
Advice: The extended versions of the albums are not worth the money or time you would spare for them, but this comp is a nice one, especially if you can get it at low price.

After years of buying poorly packaged imports and haphazard CD collections (anyone want a copy of THE OTHER SIDE OF GARY NUMAN?), they finally did it correctly. This box set completely (and beautifully!) compiles the studio albums released by Gary Numan on his Numa label between 1984 and 1994. Not all of this is essential listening (I'm not a big fan of STRANGE CHARM, although I like several tracks on it), so I can only recommended it to those who've decided they like Gary Numan's stuff, and want a lot of it. The liner notes are very well done - no punches pulled (I hate it when liner notes pretend every song is an out-and-out classic), but written with an excellent understanding of the material. One very minor quibble - the SACRIFICE CD comes in a cardboard sleeve as one of the pages of the book, and it's quite easy to put some scratches on it. Otherwise, it's a beautifully done collection. Only one question - when is someone gonna put METAL RHYTHM and OUTLAND in a package?

5 out of 5 stars A dream for a Numan devotee, like myself.......1998-09-03

Waiting nearly twenty years for a digital compilation of Mr. Webb's work simply makes the joy upon hearing it all the better. Some things really are worth the wait, and this excellent box set is something indeed. Delving too deeply into the specific merits of this particular CD set is a bit difficult, as it is a compilation CD set and not a new release or something heretofore unavailable. But, having said that, it still stands as obvious that those fans who enjoy the wealth of work that Gary Numan has brought to the listening masses will, by necessity, love this CD set, since so very much of what he's done is included in it. I guarantee that it will be greatly appreciated by his fans new and old; especially if they, like me, are growing tired of transfering all of his old LP's and B-side singles to CD via sound editing and mastering software. This box set is truly a bargain. It's gratifying that this much of his work has finally been compiled digitally.

            Customer Reviews:

            3 out of 5 stars Numan's lost years.......2006-06-03

I originally bought Strange Charm on cd back in the late 80s. I had heard the song My Breathing on a college radio station and was floored by the exotic sound of it - the chorus, the synthesized orchestra and the eerie violin solo. I agree with the other reviewers who say it's one of Numan's greatest songs. As it turned out My Breathing and This Is Love are the only two songs on the original album that I liked. This Is Love features one of the best saxophone solos that I've ever heard by anybody. The song also features some brilliant fretless bass playing. Another good thing about this newer release is that it includes the song Survival, which I always liked...(it was originally the b-side of the This Is Love single). The rest of the album contains mostly bland electro funk music that features those annoying female vocals that Numan was so fond of at that time.

            2 out of 5 stars One-track Wonder.......2005-11-01

In the US, Gary has been consigned to the one-hit-wonder file. Too bad, since he put out at least 7 solid albums, and a load of intriguing tracks scattered over the rest of his opera. When I first bought this one, the cover art put me off right away. Wayfarers and platinum blonde hair? Please. It seems Gary never quite extricated himself from the 21st century brothel-attendant look of "Dance." But I recall the very moment I flipped it onto the turntable at a friend's house and was STUNNED when I heard the first track. "My Breathing" is one of the finest tracks Numan ever produced. The string groove has a kind of Wagnerian drive to it. The wailing ladies weren't distracting attention from everything else. It was just plain fun to listen to, and the lyrics were above par for Gary in this period of his career. In short, I was certain Gary was going to make that comeback Numanoids of olden days long prophesied. Then I heard the second track.

There are two other tracks worth visiting and revisiting, "The Sleeproom" and "Time to Die" which is sort of a schlockie tribute to Ridley Scott's Bladerunner that very nearly works and certainly beats everything on the original album except the two other aforementioned tracks. I would give 5 stars to "My Breathing," 3 stars for the other two, and 1 or 2 stars for each of the others.

            2 out of 5 stars schizophrenic charm.......2004-10-08

Numan's dance trend reaches scattered heights in the disco-tronic 80's. Confusion and perhaps blatant redundancy cloud whatever direction Numan is trying to approach in the post-modern era. A river patrol to sax highlighted dance floors perhaps.

...however, the schizophrenic "Strange Charm" yields 3 classics in "My Breathing", "The Sleeproom" and "Time To Die". Strange in the fact that Time To Die was left off the first pressing of this CD. Even more strange is that it was only available on cassette. Did anyone still buy 45's in the mid 80's? Strange Charm indeed.

            3 out of 5 stars "I know that I don't sound like I should".......2004-08-06

I bet more than a few Numan fans back in 1986 felt a bad trick was played on them when they plopped Strange Charm on their turntables for the first time. "My Breathing" is amazing! On my top 10 all-time Numan list. It quietly builds up and then kicks in with this powerful orchestra sound (well keyboard-generated orchestra sound) and quiet, actually very nice, female vox. Unbelievable song! Words cannot do justice. After The Fury, which disappointed many fans, this song must have sounded like a breath of fresh air (no pun intended). Numan is back on track! Then the saxophone blares and the female singers wail on the second track "Unknown and Hostile" and reality sets in. More Janet Jacksonesque music from the New Wave/synthesizer god. "I Can't Stop" and "The Need" continues the annoying material found on The Fury ("Creatures," "This Disease"). The latter is my vote for all-time worst Numan track. Like on The Fury, though, there are some decent tracks on here, besides the excellent opener, that keeps Strange Charm from being a bust. The title track rocks! It reminds me of "The Pleasure Skin" off The Fury. "The Sleeproom" and "This is Love" are two beautiful ballads. I know a lot of fans hate Numan's very commercial work with Bill Sharpe, but I think "New Thing from London Town" is rather catchy. Cleopatra's issue even gives you a 7:57 version of the infamous single with different lyrics. Of the extra tracks, the haunting ballad "Time to Die" is the best. It reminds me a little of "I Still Remember" off The Fury. According to the liner notes, it was inspired by the movie "Blade Runner" (a clip from which begins "Call Out the Dogs"). "Faces" and "Survival" are two odd instrumentals. Strange Charm is one of my least played Numan CDs but "My Breathing" alone makes it worth the price. This issue has black & white photos of Numan from the period (one color photo with Sharpe) and lyrics.

            5 out of 5 stars Chilly elegance.......2003-01-29

Gary Numan conquers new territory on this album, recorded in just six days with some of the most respected talents in traditional and contemporary blue grass. A stark a capella duet with Ralph Stanley is not to be missed. Numan's lyrics remain rooted in sci-fi futurism and post-modern alienation. Their combination with "the high lonesome sound" is piquant, to say the least.
