Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. Still, the contrast between these tracks and the instrumental score that precedes them may not be to everybody's taste. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

As a collector of movie soundtracks, it was unthinkable not to get this fourth album of the Harry Potter series. After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive as to whether it would sit on my shelf collecting dust or get a good workout in the CD player.
I own all four albums, and as avid a fan as I am of John Williams, I would have to say "The Goblet of Fire" rates up there with "The Philosopher's Stone" (which really did set the standard for the rest of the following albums). In fact, I would have to say that "The Goblet of Fire" is my favourite. The music is quite simply beautiful and atmospheric. Standouts are "Harry In Winter" (this particular track I can't help but have on repeat mode in the car), "Death of Cedric" and "Foreign Visitors Arrive". "The Quidditch Cup" makes me want to catch the next plane to Ireland! And call me old-fashioned, but "Neville's Waltz" and "Potter Waltz" are pleasant and lovely to the ear.
As for the rock songs at the end, I usually bypass them. Some complain about the jarring disconnect between the orchestral aspect of the soundtrack and the loud rock of the end - well, at least they're at the end and not in the middle! And let's face it. How many people would have grumbled that those songs that featured at the Winter Ball were left out?
I've always loved the work of Patrick Doyle (e.g. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Much Ado About Nothing"), and this soundtrack is no exception. He didn't 'fill' John Williams' shoes on this score. He pretty much created a new pair. Harry's story and personality have shifted on. It would be remiss of us to think the music wouldn't evolve as well.
So has this soundtrack lost that feeling of magic? I would have to say a resounding 'no'. It's certainly a lot more listener-friendly than "Chamber of Secrets"!
The Magic is Gone.......2007-05-10
John Williams is not simply a hard act to follow...he's THE hard act to follow. Nonetheless this score falls far short. There was once magic in the land of Hogwarts.. themes were stated boldly and elevated the story, flurries of woodwinds nurtured scenes of flight. Doyle's score does dare to quote William's melodies at 3 points in this score. They are harmonized poorly and treated even worse. The rest of the score just goes downhill from here. He does introduce his own new "themes." These are presented as boring quarter note string lines that you can't seem to remember 10 seconds after you hear them. The rest of the scoreat it's best is a prime example of dated cliches. The dialogue scenes are overly sappy and the action scenes become hokey in an almost silent film music stlye. Watch the graveyard scene again and laugh, check out the dance scene where characters get lifted in the air as simple scales comically mirror their moves. The most common reaction to the music after viewing the film is "I don't really remember it as being good or bad." If you go back and watch it again I think you story will change. The magic is gone.
Atmospheric...But That's About All.......2007-03-31
One of the joys for me of the John Williams "Harry Potter" scores are the lush, melodic leitmotifs. On "The Chamber of Secrets" album alone there are wonderful themes for Fawkes, Dobby and Gilderoy Lockhart, not to mention Colin, Hedwig and The Flying Car. They're charming, evocative pieces that stand alone apart from the moodier, more percussive tracks composed to accompany the actual movie. Unfortunately, there's nothing that even comes close to these in Doyle's "Goblet of Fire" score. There's certainly drama ("The Maze") and pathos ("Death of Cedric"), but nothing thematic that you'd want to hear over and over again. And what themes there are ("Neville's Waltz" for instance) I find woefully banal. (And don't get me started on the acid rock songs that close the album.) So this is a true movie score in the sense that it's pretty much all background music; it certainly creates atmosphere and serves as a reminder of the film's superlative visuals. But what works well in the theater doesn't translate very well for the home audio listener.
Musically Spellbinding.......2007-01-09
This album is a must for an Harry Potter fan, both young and old, from the mild to the extreme. I also recommend the entire collection of soundtracks to the movies. Each one is full of calm, soothing melodies we have come to enjoy from Harry Potter.

Marty Stuart began collaborating with legends when he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a 13-year-old mandolinist. One of his biggest singles, 1991's "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," teamed him with Travis Tritt. This compilation includes a rare Stuart mandolin workout on Bill Monroe's "Rawhide" recorded onstage with Flatt in 1974, and "Hearts Like Ours" with wife Connie Smith. He and ex-father-in-law Johnny Cash created a fiery revival of Cash's Sun recording of "Doin' My Time." With Steve Earle, Stuart created a beautifully understated rendition of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping." He was equally adept with Earl Scruggs on "John Henry" and with Merle Haggard on a 2003 "Farmer's Blues." That empathy extended to blues and gospel greats, apparent on "The Weight" with the Staple Singers and "Confessin' the Blues" with B.B. King. Two unreleased tracks include Stuart and Loretta Lynn reviving "Will You Visit Me on Sunday," a tune she'd previously recorded with the late Conway Twitty, and the Who's "I Can See for Miles" with Stuart, his band, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Unlike the many Nashville "vocal events" that are simply contrived marketing ploys, Stuart's collaborations are consistently organic, without a shred of artifice. --Rich Kienzle

Any one who loves music will find something on this CD to enjoy. There's a reason it is #1 on the Americana chart this week !! It shows the whole "Marty Party" spectrum from fantastic instrumentals to blues, to ballads, to love songs, to classic country; and does it with a superb lineup of "compadres".

From the very talented and Major Country Music Artist Marty Stuart, comes his New Addition in "Compadres: An Anthology of Duets"! This is a wonderful CD with many Special Guest's who join Marty for what I believe to be one of his BEST Musical Ventures to date. You will not find a bad song on the entire disc, with a spectacular variety and assortment of different types of music. A must buy for the Marty Stuart or Country Music Fan!!

Another great record from Marty Stuart. I used to think Marty was blessed to know and to perform with so many of the great artists of country music. Now I think they are blessed to be able to perform with Marty. He truly is a one of the greats of country music. Now I am blessed to hear Marty with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt, Connie Smith, George Jones, BB King, Del McCoury, Loretta Lynn, Lester Flatt and his Fabulous Superlatives. Love the pictures and the notes included also.

Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19
I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.
great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07
Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

Oh to be free and frivolous, like Stuart Murdoch and his extensive cast of players as they engage The Life Pursuit. There's no "Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It" or "Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying" on this disc. Life has gotten easier, it seems, since Belle and Sebastian's early days. To boot, since 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, the Belle cast has indulged a more 70s-era set of influences: Isn't that Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" beat on the funny "White Collar Boy," a near sequel to "Step Into My Office, Baby"? And how about the T-Rex touch on the opening of "The Blues Are Still Blue"? No worries, Belle and Sebastian retain their gleam flawlessly. A jaunty lift is still in their step, a carefree abandon that charms even as it also reaches to the 70s for the funk-meets-psychedelia, "Song for Sunshine." It's bright and breezy throughout (the titles tell some of the story: "Another Sunny Day" and "Funny Little Frog"), with memorably decorous, familiar bouncing rhythms marking much of the album. The downtone "Dress Up in You" and "Mornington Crescent" are spare and lovely, wide-open in their pacing. All the same, "For the Price of a Cup of Tea," almost triggers a sing-along with just its name. --Andrew Bartlett

I've always liked Belle & Sebastian. This is the best record they ever made. Anybody who doesn't like because it's too "slick" or "glossy" you are stupid. You may yearn for the charm of un-produced songs of the past and they were great but these songs are better. I don't skip over nothing. This is one of the better full record/albums prolly ever made. I really believe that.
The Life Pursuit.......2007-06-08
Reductive as it may sound, recent decades have musical signifiers that define the eras that spawned them. The `70s had disco. The `80s had synth-pop. The `90s had grunge. If you didn't look very hard, you might conclude that the `00s lack a musical style to call its own, but in fact, many of today's rock musicians have made their mark by culling from genres past: post-punk, folk-pop, new wave, garage rock and surf rock, just to name a few.
Forced to give an example of this trend, you could do a lot worse than Belle & Sebastian. They blazed onto the scene in 1996 with their first wide release, If You're Feeling Sinister, a winsome folk-pop pastiche that channeled The Field Mice, Nick Drake (in a big way) and Simon & Garfunkel. But even past-dependent bands need to evolve, and after treading water on 2000's Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, they bounced back in 2003 with the sonically rich Dear Catastrophe Waitress and again in 2006 with The Life Pursuit--an album even more varied and energetic than its predecessor.
Playing "Spot the Influence" on The Life Pursuit is pretty easy if you've been following your music history. The carefree, eclectic spirit of The Smiths echoes throughout the album, most prominently on the sprightly "We Are the Sleepyheads" and the infectiously catchy "Funny Little Frog." There are shout-outs to `50s rockabilly a la Bill Haley ("The Blues Are Still Blue"), road trip-style Americana ("Another Sunny Day") and even Motown soul ("Song for Sunshine"), reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's more uptempo numbers.
The Life Pursuit transcends mere idol worship, however, due to Belle & Sebastian's ever-apparent modernist skew. "White Collar Boy" is the obvious exemplar: It's backboned by a stomping beat lifted from The Clash's "London Calling," and its jangly, bouncy guitars recall those oh-so-cheery performances on "American Bandstand." But the band takes advantage of modern instrumentation by incorporating a squelchy Korg in lieu of a bass, which makes sense in this flashy context. Additionally, the subject matter concerning an unceremonious white collar crime stands in blatant contrast to the song's instrumental cuteness. Think Stereolab in full Marxist mode and you've got the idea.
Between 2000 and 2006, Belle & Sebastian transformed from a collaborative outfit to what is now, essentially, a Stuart Murdoch solo project. As with Dear Catastrophe Waitress, Murdoch serves as principle songwriter, lyricist, vocalist and guitarist. He's more willing to take left turns than the rest of the band, and while his R&B singing comes off a little awkwardly, he has an unusually high success rate when he stretches himself. "Another Sunny Day," for example, is prime alternative country-rock, its driving rhythm and twanging guitars recalling the sunny, expansive highways of Nashville. As if that weren't enough, he's complemented by Waitress producer Trevor Horn, who has an intuitive feel for the band and lends them an appropriately crisp sound.
The Life Pursuit is Belle & Sebastian's most energetic release, and therein lies its only flaw. If someone had described Belle & Sebastian as "energetic" circa 1996, you probably would have laughed, but after ten years the band has moved fully out of the bedroom and into the world at large. The problem is that the most valuable introspection often occurs in the quiet confines of the bedroom, and for all of The Life Pursuit's giddy joy, most of its appeal lies right on its surface and doesn't especially reward deeper listening. If that makes The Life Pursuit slightly less masterful than Dear Catastrophe Waitress, it also firmly cements Belle & Sebastian's exciting new direction and heralds them as some of the finest torch-bearers of the 2000's zeitgeist.

wow! i truly love this album. the songs are melodic but not depressing. the lyrics are beautiful and fierce! and all i wanna do is listen to this album again and again! "funny little frog" has a wonderful beat to it and makes me wanna hug somebody! all i wanna do when listening to "we are the sleepyheads" is drive with the wind in my hair! all the songs are great! buy this album!
Thoughtful, sentimental, sad, upbeat, sublime, melodic.......2007-04-02
Such an interesting set of emotions this music conjures, with ranging from the effervescent and hopeful "For the Price of a Cup of Tea" to a winding and countryish, starkly devastating "Another Sunny Day".
There are stories in every song, yet without otherwise downbeat, morose or self-important tones meant to drive meanings home. Often, the music seems an ironic consideration, offering even subtle sarcasm and unabashed expression to carry (and parry?) the prosaic tellings. I can hear creative timing and inescapable, sugary licks from 10cc, with the modern exuberance of Supergrass, in pop elements of their formulations. Some later Stranglers modern rock and even 70s Bowie influences infect a number of tracks. Throughout, there is a sense of arthouse sensibilities beneath the slick production - which seems a polished representation of their actual music, rather than being a simple covering or gussying up of inferior music that we often hear from obfuscatory, post-production effects in such prevalent use these days.
Loads more influences are evident, but hopefully you get the idea: each song has been imbibed with meaningful consideration of its unique storyline, yet wrapped in driving, highly complementary and fresh sounds that evoke familiar influences. It almost sounds like pop music that *must* have already been recorded by others, yet you are constantly reminded that it was never quite like this.
There are no didactic qualities to the otherwise thoughtful tales - they seem offered for reflection on both the speaker and yourself, as seems fitting. No moralizing in subjects touching on religion, relationships or society. Marvelously open to your judgement, with layers of depth to consider during and even after the listen. Regardless of whether you find a personal sharing in the situation or not, these individual themes evoke empathy by virtue of their thorough crafting and closely conjoined melodies.
At first, the tunes themselves pulled me in to a purchase. But, after a handful of repeated listenings (and, I rarely "repeat listen" to anything) the lyrical depth of consideration, whimsy and even simple story-telling craft carved deep furrows into my daydreaming times. Some songs have gained more emotional weight than I initially expected - yet, they remain so compelling, I keep going back to listen again. And, I have kept coming back to this record throughout my first week of ownership, many times a day. Quite odd for me, really.
Since this purchase, I've gone back in their catalogue to buy "If You're Feeling Sinister", which seems from the same roots . . . just, less musically advanced, more fragile in the production and certainly not near as confident in the presentation in contrast to The Life Pursiot. Yet, just as deep and emotionally considerable without being too ponderous, even then. Both albums are lovely and enjoyable in their own ways, with much shared between them, essentially.
I feel this latest album by Belle & Sebastian sounds part of a natural progression, perhaps a maturation of both musicality and acceptance/understanding of their subject matter, and can see plenty of room for broadening their sound styles beyond "The Life Pursuit" without losing who they appear to be at the core.

i never really heard any of their stuff before...and i am reminded of that other scottisch band Zephyrs in places, but less spacy. This record sparkles and is just right.

As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

I first heard Manhattan Tower in 1962...a friend had the record and I couldn't get enough of it....I still have the original record at home I would never part with it....I'm so glad this came out in CD....it brings out so many memories.....Thank You so much
Incredible CD - Incredible Value.......2007-06-11
This is another of the forgotten shows that Sepia Records has brought back to life. The music and lyrics are wonderful, and the transfer is absolutely superb as are all of the Sepia recordings. The bonus material is incredible as well. I've been told that another issue of MANHATTAN TOWERS is around that doesn't have nearly the same amount of music on it. Where else can you get a CD that has close to 80 minutes of music on it and not pay a fortune? I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of Sepia Records because of their re-release of shows like this and wonderful scores like MAKE A WISH and HAZEL FLAGG that have disappeared as well. Check out Bette Davis in TWO'S COMPANY for an all-time classic. With quality and value like this, I hope that Sepia Records are around for a very long time.

I am absolutely thrilled that this record has come out on CD. I have had a copy of it ever since I first saw it, and it has always been one of my very top favorites. The music is so pretty, the songs are so beautiful, the singers are so good, and the way it's all put together is just amazing. It's a love affair in a beautiful setting, and if you haven't heard it, you really owe it to yourself to listen. I'm so happy Amazon's got it for such a good price; I want to buy a copy to send to everyone I've ever loved. If you like pre-rock-and-roll pop music, kinda the Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra sound, or if you like Michael Buble and things like that or even Barry Manilow, you'll really like this CD.

My Favourite opera.......2007-07-13
With the recent loss to the opera world of Beverly Sills I had to put something here.This was the very first opera recording I heard on LP and it transfixed me ..from that day on I was caught in the opera web of music great women and men and wonderful stories.I believe we have lost much through not having recordings of earlier productions of this work especially with Triegal her favourtie Dr .Sills is for me the best exponent of Offenbachs tales as she has the ability to change with each role.I for one will sorely miss her comic nuances and her effortless singing.Thankyou Ms Sills for everything

LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN
This is not the Best HOFFMAN you can get. That would probably be the Camberling, with Neil Shicoff (Not availble on this site, except in Highlight form.) or the first set conducted by Cluntyes with Jouban. This set may be a nice way to experience Hoffmann if you haven't heard the others, and there are aspects of the recording that are really quite excellent, but there are several major flaws.
The good news first: The Conducting is in the capable hands of Julius Rudel, who knows just what to do with the score. The London Symphony Orchestra plays excellently, and there is great choral work from the John Alldis Choir.
More good news: Beverly Sills is divine. She attempts all four heroines here, including the spoken role of Stella. As Olympia, she does not go for the dazzling, optional high notes Sutherland, Doria and Dessay reach on other recordings, but her comic performance of the "Doll Song" is enchanting. Sills was always at home with comedy (see her on the muppet show to see what I mean) and Olympia is definetly a highlight of the performance. She is also highly satisfactory as the other two heroines ,her voice effortlessly and expertly conveying the two different women. She is at her dramatic best as Guiletta, and her work in the Barcarolle and the love duet is ravishing. Antonia's aria is whistful and the love duet and trio are both excellent. For a soprano to handle all three heroines capably is rare. Grubernova had enough dramatic insight and vocal beauty to pull of the rudiments of each role, but I've never been a big fan of hers. Sutherland tried, gave out a fine Olympia and disappointed in the other roles. Sills may not be the greatest trio of heroines (Doria, Bouvay and Boué for Cluntyes get that honor), but she is easily the most successful of the three sopranos who have attempted all three roles.
As the four Villains, Norman Treigle is electrifying. His Dappertutto is hypotic, his Lindorf oozing smile, his Coppelius creepy, and his Miracle downright frightening. He is especaily good in the men's trio in the third act. Susanne Marsee handles the music of Nicklausse and the muse's dialogue well, but never really gets beyond "good," as such mezzos and Tourangeau, Murray and Reviol do. She does blend very well with Sills in the barcarolle.
And the bad news: As Hoffman, Stuart Burrows may sing well enough, but his acting leaves something to be desired. Okay, who am I kidding? This is probably his least satisfactory traversal on records. He doesn't even try to portray the tourtured genius Hoffmann is. Nowehere is the anguish of the poets soul or the passion that drives him to self-destruction. Surrounded by the talent voicing his loves, his nemeses and his companion, he cannot help but seem lost in the shuffle.
Nico Castel handels Franz effortlessly, but seems, for some reason, uncomfortable in the monosyllabic utterings of Andres and Pittichinaccio. He sings Spalanzani instead of Cochenille in the Olympia act, hamming it up horribly. He also is the only Spalanzani on records to be completely unfunny.
The always reliable Robert Lloyd delivers an excellent Crespel and Patricia Kern sings well as the Mother. Raimund Herincx could be better as Schemil, but is fine as Hermann. It's depressing when the only person giving a wholly successful performance in the tenor cleft is the Nathaneal/Cochenille, Bernard Dickerson who provides strong support (On the Covent Garden video of the Opera with Domingo, he sings Frantz to great effect) . The chorus work is well done as well. I give it 4/5 stars, a full point taken off for Burrows' acting and another fraction for Castel's hamming as Spalanzani
My Favorite Hoffman, Hands Down.......2004-06-21
On a Texaco Metropolitan Opera broadcast, a panelist of the opera quiz was asked what opera he would choose if he was stranded on a desert island. He selected THE TALES OF HOFFMAN since there are so many versions of the opera, as well as a mention of DON GIOVANNI., he would easily have more than one opera. Since Offenbach died before an official version was completed, there are a number of versions of the opera. This production, starring Beverly Sills as Stella and the major heroines: Olympia, Giulietta, and Antonia, under the direction of conductor Julius Rudel, is the standard version of the work. If I could only take one version of this opera on a desert island, this recording would definitely be my choice.
I became familiar with this red cording when it was released on cassette by EMI. Hoffman, sung by tenor Stuart Burrows, is a down on his luck writer who is madly in love with the beautiful actress Stella. His love life is in shambles and he is an alcoholic to boot. He goes to a tavern to tell three tales, and the tales somehow reflect the pain he feels caused by his love for Stella. Burrows is a gifted tenor and he sings the role with both ease and dramatic gifts. Sills as the three heroines is perhaps at he bets and easily handles the challenges of the three roles. Julius Rudel keeps the score moving and is aided by the great London Symphony Orchestra and the equally great John Aldis Choir.
Anyone who peruses through the various HOFFMAN offerings will notice a variety of editions. While this is not a critical edition, I do find it the version which flows the best. I also have a number of HOFFMAN recordings with Neil Shicoff, Francisco Araiza, and Placido Domingo in the title role. While each recording has its strengths, this is the one I enjoy most. The tempo is upbeat, the singing first rate, and the orchestra and chorus are excellent. Who could ask for more?

I'm sorry if I hurt anyone. I was just so mad and angry because Callas got bashed so many times by a Sills-Fanatic. I deeply apologise. Sills has a very beautiful voice, one of the best lyric coloratura voices out there. I hope Bev's fans will forgive me. Sills is an amazing Olympia btw.

Sutherland, Callas and Sills. And the venom is spewed and the imbecilic attacks rage on. They were all three wonderful. So are others, but I for one like them the best. Callas was my first love, she's strange, but I still like her, her vicious off-stage personality (which I have a recording of) notwithstanding. How silly! I don't like Sutherland singing anything but coloratura, sorry, but all else bores me. I bought a CD of her Suor Angelica and hated and trashed it. But coloratura, she's a dream. Sills, however, is my favorite. I can't resist that silky, butter melting on a plate voice of hers. And her coloratura (and Callas') is no schlock either. But this opera. It was smooth and warm and beautiful. The sound quality was perfect. It was all sung in French, and for once the opera sounded it. It begins with some spoken dialogue (by the Muse) which turned me off and I was mad as hell and decided to throw the thing away, I thought I had been duped, cheated into another comic opera. But (sigh), I went back and discovered to my joy that it is all sung, and beautifully. Sills plays all Hoffman's loves. The trio at the end of Antonia's act was wonderful as far as the women went, but (sigh) Dr. Miracle was again the weak link. No one I've heard beats Bacquier on the Sutherland (a version with dialogue, sad to say) recording, but this one came close. The trio was beautiful of course (with that music and good singers, how could it miss), but I thought it lacked the spark on Sutherland's version. I'm sure I've enraged Callas fanatics and Sutherland devotees and maybe even a Sills fan or two. So be it. The order of acts are Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia. I enjoyed the opera which arrived yesterday and which I listened to this morning. If you like/love Sills as I do, I recommend it. Otherwise it's just another Hoffmann.

Mediocre at Best.......2007-04-22
Although not a huge fan of the Lostprophets, I bought this album for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift. I've listened to it several times and I must say it's not the best music in the world. Although there are several good songs "rooftops" the rest of the CD just seems to be the same track with the same exact screaming over and over again. Hard to enjoy and like.
Slightly disappointed.......2007-04-13
There are many alternative/punk rock bands that for some reason contain a certain sound that appeals to the masses. I grew tired and searched for something more daring and expermential and I found the Lostphrophets "Start Something" Cd.
I was very excited to hear that the Lostprophets was coming out with a new Cd. When I listened to it though, I was slightly disappointed. They traded in that unique sound that seemed hardcore without excessive sreaming and heavy metal for a more pop culture sound. Something that would more appeal to the masses, to be placed on the radio more.
The Lostprophets changed their sound to get more famous. To get more money. I'm not saying I'm mad a them, or look down on the them, I'm just disappointed that the Lostprophets would fall to the glamour.

As the title of the review dictates, my personal enjoyment of Liberation Transmission was far from immediate. I bought it for $3.99 without having heard any of the songs except Rooftops, and then after listening to it twice one day I decided it wasn't quite as good as the non-emo style of Start Something and Fake Sound of Progress but at least was worth keeping in my collection for a few stand-out tracks. But then I listened to the album once more on my MP3 player yesterday and I was absolutely astonished by how awesome it was; far better than I had given it credit for after the first two listens, and I would now in fact call it one of the finer releases of 2006. Unlike the Hawthorne Heights or Simple Plan brand of emo, this album has a good degree of sophistication lyrically and instrumentally which is not at all shameful to be a fan of. Some of the songs even have guitar progressions that adopt a style similar to that of Bloc Party or The Bravery, such as the awesome track "Heaven fro the Weather, Hell for the Company". Speaking of song titles, that's the only real downside to the album; lengthy track names similar to the ones used by Panic! At the Disco and Fall Out Boy are corny on occasion and will likely not aid the Lostprophets in getting the respect they deserve for this phenomenal album. Still, track titles do nothing to mar the musical content of the tracks, which is of the finest quality. My favorite song on here would definitely have to be "The New Transmission", which probably is a hit too for all I know since I did after all hear it playing in a mall one time. This song has a particularly catchy and noisy riff in the background, a great energetic chorus where the guy yells "faaaaaaaaaaade out", and simply an awesome flow to the melody which may tempt you to head-bang depending on your age. "The New Transmission" is probably one of my Top 100 favorite tracks of all time, closely followed in greatness by "Heaven for the Weather, Hell for the Company", "Rooftops", and "A Town Called Hypocrisy". As I recall there were about five other tracks I liked extremely also; my MP3 player was in my pocket when the songs were playing though and thus I don't know all the names of them. I do know however that this is one amazing CD; technically flawless. I really can no longer say I want the band to return to the style of Start Something or the album before it, but don't get me wrong; I do like those albums a lot and wouldn't be completely heartbroken if they returned to that style for their next release. Overall I'd say that Liberation Transmission is a solid five star album, and one that certainly deserves more than a single listen if you weren't impressed with it the first time. Highly recommended!

I don't know Lostprophets, but I just heard this album at their offical website. After listening to it, this is what I have to say about this band....
This band was OK, but too much of punk, and I usually listen to punk. Songs "Everday Combat" and "Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)" were the best tracks in this album. And song "4 AM Forever" had a guitar solo. Lostprofets is just OK, but great. Sometimes they can get a little boring, since their songs are usually long, like song "Always All Way", a soft track. But I will advice you not to spend your money on this.

Browsing through a few other reviews, it seems important to note here that I am a heterosexual male, and thus don't care how dreamy the boys in the band look (if I even bothered to look at the band, I would slightly resent them for it), and actually like them because of the music they make.
Having been in love with Start Something, I was expecting big things from Liberation Transmition. It's a solid album, but less my style than the previous album.
Perhaps a bit overproduced, it isn't quite as heavy as Start Something. To the band's credit, it legitimately sounds different from Start Something, but unfortunately for me, I enjoy it less.
Still worth owning, though. I would give it about 3.7 out of 5 stars. It has a lot of style and I like most of the album, but I confess to liking the first track, Everyday Combat, more than pretty much other song on the CD. I do rather dislike the first single, Rooftops/title track, howeever.
For whatever it's worth, this review was written by someone who actually pays money for music.

Solid Christian Rock.......2007-06-10
This album is full of high quality rock music and praise lyrics.
The focus is clearly on God. Each song is full of positive, Christ centered messages. The lead singer's voice is unique and adds a lot to some really excellent instrumentals.
This is an album that sounds better each time I listen to it.

this album is simply fantastic. Delirious never fails to deliver something original, something different from their past albums. The artwork is beautiful, and the songs are luscious. The message, as always, is challenging, and yet still serves to encourage and inspire without condemnation. Thanks, d:boys!
May be the album of the decade............2007-03-26
There are some amazing Christian artist out today such as Delirious? and my favorite female artist Nichole Nordeman, but if you're looking for consistency in quality in music as well as all-out worship music, you will to go with Delirious? It is true I have not been a long-time Delirious? fan, I have known about them for 6 or 7 years, but was not interested in them until I heard "Inside/Outside" off of the "World Service" album(another great album by the way). I myself am a songwriter/singer and I am amazed by Delirious every time I listen to their albums, there is such consistency and fervor in their music the only band I can liken them to is U2(their older stuff, Joshua tree and before). Even doing that is to say that Delirious cannot stand by alone, which is entirely untrue.
The content of this album is rich and consistent all of the way through. From the first track "Stronger" to the last track "I'll see you"; there is a consistency that is in very few albums period. This is actually an album you WANT to listen to in its entirety. Yes, you can take the tracks separately and they are still outstanding, but listening to them together makes each track even stronger!
I wont rate tracks individually on how much better they are than the other because they are all outstanding, but rather on their stand-alone credibility. For me, honestly the best stand-alones are(In no particular order): 1. Paint this town red: because it is my alarm clock song, and yet even this track flows so well into the next. 2. All this time: I just love this song "I'm a father and a son, I've been a lover with just one, but this world can get me so undone, and I feel like I'm the only one." these lyrics are just amazing. 3. Miracle Maker: This was my 1st alarm clock song from this album, but was too mellow in the beginning. It is possibly the crux of the album. "Just one touch is not enough..." 4. Here I am send me: I could listen to this song all day! This is probably because prophets fascinate me, and it talks about one of my favorite prophets "Elijah". These are the tracks that I like to listen to on their own, and pare probably my personal favorite tracks. I would not necessarily say they are the best (well, I would for me); this is because this is an album where it seems everyone has their own favorite since every track on here is awesome!!!
The bottom line is this: If you have not purchased this album yet, DO IT NOW!!!! You are depriving yourself of not just probably the best Christian music out today, but the BEST music PERIOD!!!

Sounds like Delirious....only better.......2007-03-16
Some bands who have been around for awhile depart from their original sound, and early fans don't like the new stuff anymore (eg Jars of Clay).
Delirious has blown it out of the water with this album. It sounds like Delirious, so if you love their original sound, you'll love this album. And yet, it doesn't sound like Delirious, because they have broadened their range and incorporated new sounds with their old sound.
Some things I expected on this album that did not disappoint - intriguing lyrics, driving rock rhythms, contrasting with a smooth lyrical melodies, strong instrumentation, perfect order of songs, dynamic changes and builds...
Some things I did not expect, that if you told me ahead of time I would have thought wouldn't work with Delirious' sound, but they DO!: a tiny bit of rap (and I usually hate rap), a rich and full sounding choir (I want to say black choir because it had that amazing sound, but I could be wrong), a female vocal every once in a while in just the right places, and driving quarter notes from one of the instruments on every song (adds so much movement and strength to the songs - feels very powerful).
If you are a musician, this album is right up your alley. I love to learn stuff by listening to them play!
Now Is The Time...to buy this CD!.......2007-02-14
There's one thing you can always expect with a Delirious? CD...passion. They write passionate songs that explore their deep faith and love for Jesus, and you can tell that they mean every word they sing. I was almost sure I would be let down by this CD (since I loved "World Service" so much and thought it wouldn't measure up), but I wasn't disappointed in the least. Although this CD does not have a song as good as "Majesty (Here I Am)," there are enough songs in here to keep this CD in your rotation. "Stronger" is a great first track, and makes you know that great things are to come. "Fires Burn," "Miracle Maker," "Now Is The Time," "Solid Rock," "Take Off My Shoes," and "Our God Reigns" are incredible tracks where Martin Smith's vocals shine powerfully, ranging from low notes to ridiculously long higher notes. I would have to agree with reviewer Brian Reaves, in that "Paint The Town Red" is a little weak and almost seems out of place in this album. But other than that, this is an amazing CD and I am looking forward to see where Delirous? goes from here.

A great way to introduce the classics to the person who is too hip to listen to Mozart!
Remixed.......2006-06-01
Hmmmm....what can I say? Remixed is the 3rd album Bond has released, consisting of remixes of old favorites and several new tracks. For those of you who don't know, Bond is a rock string Quartet made up by 4 young women. Similar in style old Vanessa Mae.
The Album starts with an exciting opening, of Viva! (Orion Mix). This is made up from a remake of Antonio Vivaldi's Allegro from Winter (The Four Seasons). Its an enjoyable piece, very simple, but the drums and the occasional shouting of "VIVA!" makes it a great song.
The second track is a remix of one of Bond's more famous piece. Victory was a huge success, but the remix wasn't so in my opinion. The 'Sharp Boys Wild Strings Edit' was a strange one. It didn't contain much of the original. After a tedious drum beat and strange sounds for about 1 minute and 10 seconds, a short clip of strings come on the original melody. For the next minute more drums, then more repeating of the melody heard in the middle.
Third track was a remix of Wintersun. Wintersun (Bobby D'Ambrosio Mix) was basically the same, but a bit more of a disco style.
Again, with Speed (Crash Club Mix). Sam thing, but a lot more of the disco sounds. I actually found myself enjoying it more than the original! It really sounds like some one is...driving a car or something.
Fuego's remix (Caliete Mix) I also enjoyed more than the original. It has a longer introduction, and more music to back up the strings. It also has a very fast sita (sp?) solo in the middle, making it sound very Spanish!
Homecoming, Atlanta and Time are new tracks. Not my most favorites, but they are very calm, remind me of Asia. Except for Time which sort of gives you the feeling that all the clocks are moving at the same time. Bond also uses Clock sounds in the middle for effect.
Shine (Dubsharka Mix) is by FAR the best song on the album. Its a fantastic dance track, with a fantastic solo and playing in the song. Its a Bollywood styled song, making you think of India. I was a little disappointed however, since this song was released on their earlier album (Shine, 2002). Although I love it, they should have put the Indian Summer Mix on instead, which cant be found anywhere except on Atlanta/Time
Duel and Bond on Bond (Both 'Hectic Mixes') I just couldn't stand. They were absolutely ridiculous. Just having the tracks played twice as fast. If I wanted to do that, I could have gone into Media player and pressed Fast Forward x2.
The Last song is Jingle Bell Rock (Pussy Galore Mix). Its an interesting one, just jazzing up the original Jingle Bell Rock.
Overall, this album is great for something like a party, for its mainly disco music. Not the best Bond Album, but very good anyway.
However, If you are a big bond fan, I would suggest you get the Import (Includes 2 videos of Victory and Fuego) or the Japanese Edition (Includes and Extra mix of Viva!, original Jingle Bell Rock, Duel Indonesian Mix and Innocent)

Exciting!.......2004-09-07
I got Bond's debut album a couple years ago. Although not as exciting as Vanessa-Mae's album "Storm," it was better than Vanessa-Mae's debut crossover album "The Violin Player" and approximately equal to her third album, "Subject To Change." The Bond debut had a lot of energy, but to me it was begging for a little stronger beat.
So when I found a Bond remix album late last summer, I grabbed it! How cool can that be--a Bond remix album! Whoo-hoo!!!
When I got it home and listened to it, I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't quite remixed enough. I wanted the mixes to be hotter, and the bass and drums more pronounced. But under-remixed is far preferable to over-remixed, which is a problem with Vanessa-Mae's song "Storm." This is my favorite Vanessa-Mae song; the four-minute album length is not nearly long enough for me, so when I learned there was an 8-minute remix, I just had to have it! I had to buy this Vanessa Mae CD single from a store in England (via Amazon's used CD vendors) since I could not find it stateside. And I was very disappointed: The remixer had so vastly remixed it that not only did it lose all its energy, it wasn't even recognizable! So between over-remixing and under-remixing, I prefer under-remixing, thus I am happy enough with the remixes on this Bond album. But they could have done better, I think.
Although I was a little disappointed that the mixes not being spruced up quite enough, it does not mean I do not like this album. Au contraire! I love this album! It is an album full of energy, life, vitality! It is an album that I nearly always play very LOUD! It as an album that I play when I'm wound up, feelin' good!!! Nearly every song is fast, and the beat never stops!
The album opens with "Viva!", a song that is also found on their DVD, which I bought around the same time I got this album. What a perfect song to start this album with! A sample of a group of females shouting 'VIVA!" plays from time to time throughout, adding to the energetic playing of the strings. On the DVD, this song is backed with video footage from their concert at the Royal Albert Hall in England; in the video, when the shouts "VIVA!" are heard, fireworks shoot out from the balconies and the stage at the theater--so exciting!
The next song is the remix of their first radio hit, "Victory," which starts out with a hot Latin beat and Spanish guitars. "Victory" and another track, "Fuego," feature frenetic string playing. The best song on the CD for dancing--and my second favorite song on the album--is "Duel." This has a driving bass line and percussion beat, an upfront electronic synthesizer riff, and a beautiful ethereal female nonverbal vocal accoutrement, with tubular bells even added toward the end. Spine-tingling! Wonderful!
Although "Duel" and my favorite song "Viva!" rule supreme in the degree of spine-tingling awesomeness, they're not the only ones to bring such a pleasurable reaction to me. "Wintersun" is played with deep heartfelt emotion; "Atlanta" also is full of emotion. I like "Speed" and "Time" because of their European technopop sound, especially "Time," which has a nice melodic, minor key electronic keyboard riff. "Shine" has a bit of a Spanish or Italian flair, another of many romantic flavors of this album.
There are only two songs on the album that I don't care for. One I absolutely don't like is "Jingle Bell Rock," but that's because I hate the song, not because I don't like their version of the song. If I am forced to listen to that song, I would likely choose their version. The other one I like okay, but it doesn't do for me what the rest of the songs on the album do: "Bond on Bond." This is a track of them doing the James Bond theme. A cool idea, and it works, but again, doesn't float my boat. Fortunately, these two songs are at the end of the album, so I can just end the album at the third to the last song, which is also my second favorite song, "Duel"!
Most of the DVD's music comes from their first album, while this remix CD has the best of their first two albums. I now have their third studio album, "Classified," which I like better than their first album (I don't have their second), but no surprise to me, this remix album of theirs is clearly my favorite. "Storm" by Vanessa Mae is my favorite secular album of all time, all genres combined, so naturally in the genre of classical crossover it is my favorite. Bond's "Remix" is my second favorite classical crossover album. It reaches down and touches the heartstrings of my musical soul and stirs them up to make a fabulous and emotional listening experience for me!
Remixed not recommended for "re-listening"........2004-07-27
Bond has impressed critics with their somewhat controversial performances of classical-crossovers. From using trance beats to the sounds of African drums... there is no limit to how much and what they can do to enhance classical music that they play.
With Bond Remixed however; it is quite a drag to put it simply. The album is a total re-mix album, so think of it as a compilation of single re-mixes put together. But also, there are three original tracks by Bond: Homecoming, Atlanta, and Time. All three of these tracks rely a lot on synth sounds and trance beats. Which get boring after listening to all these re-mixes, but keeping in mind that it is a RE-MIX album after all... so although the originality of Bond's previous albums: Born and Shine are not there, it is because they are re-mixed.
One of my personal favorite tracks is Viva [Orion Mix], which for those who have the Bond Live at Royal Albert Hall DVD all should know (For those who do not know, it is an extra video on the DVD, a live performance of Viva). Though I would have to say it takes repetition of classical music to its red line. Another great track to listen to is Jingle Bell Rock [Pussy Galore Mix]. Great example of good trance, combined with classical sounds. Bobby D'Ambrosio's mix of Winter, originally named Wintersun, is interesting enough by creating a new intro into the song. The rest of the song is shorter with a different beat.
The rest of the tracks seemed to use the original songs, but just add a different beat, more bass, and more synth. It puts the name of "re-mix" to a shame. Besides Speed [Crash Club Mix] which adds more excitement to the song as it is called Speed, the listener is better off listening to the originals. The prime example of horrible remixing is Duel [Hectic Mix] and Bond on Bond [Hectic Mix] (It's funny how both of these songs were badly mixed by the same person). In Duel, Hectic makes the song more faster-paced and adds a synth sound to the beat, which has a deeper bass. The song relatively stays the same. As goes the same for the Bond on Bond mix, where there is only a different, harder dance beat added to the original song. Also, Shine [Dubshakra Mix], doesn't even sound different. After listening carefully, you will notice the very subtle addition of more tambourines. But it sounds exactly the same; I listened back and forth from the "mix" to the original on the "Shine" album, and could not really tell.
If you want re-mixed Bond songs, this is terrible album to try to find some. Re-mixes are supposed to be a variation of the original song, almost as if the mix was a whole new song. But these "re-mixes" are sad to listen to. I am ashamed for whoever compiled this horrible playlist of tracks. Also, the original tracks by Bond are not what Bond is noted for, as if they were rushed to do these tracks.
A lot of artists do a "filler" album. Bond may have used a re-mix album to give themselves a year off, either for time off recording, or to make more time to record their 4th album, "Classified". Most likely it was to give the girls some well-deserved time off after releasing "Born" and "Shine".
Any fan of Bond will most likely find this album oddly dissatisfying, leaving a caustic taste in the mouth, and a penetrating headache. I would not recommend this album, unless you are a die-hard fan. But please, if you are a first-time listener to Bond, listen to "Born" or "Shine".
*There is two videos that can be played on your computer however; a video of Fuego and Victory, are fun to watch. But they are from their other albums, Victory from "Born" and Fuego from "Shine".
Good remixes.......2004-06-19
I generally stay away from remix albums simply because it's tough to improve on an original. However, I'm a huge fan of techno music and these remixes are heavier fixed with the sound of the dancefloor than the original tracks are. As you can tell by some of the reviews, some people love this, and some hate it. I think the ones that hated this CD are not fans of modern dance music and miss the whole point of dance CDs to begin with, so you can't judge anything by what they say.
This is a great dance CD, period. For the more consertive use of dance beats, see any of Bonds other releases, but this one is definately for the club fans out there. Another killer dance CD I want to suggest is Mr.Deviant's "Techno Obsession" which mixes power rock with killer dance beats to create some very original dance music. Both CDs are great!
