Im pretty sick of everyone giving 5 stars to every album ever made. Nonethless The Glands made a good album here. It is one of the few cases where a not so original band (the kind I usually dont care for) is able to make such a good album. I found this in a bargain bin for 99 cents after hearing that they were opening for the shins. I was pleasantly surprised

i was very excited to see this one in the used bin. it won the award for best athens, GA LP of the year a couple years ago, and most of my friends own it. the front man runs one of the record stores i use to frequent. as for the music, it's all over the map, touching on pavementy pop, jazz, darker folk. like so many other great athens bands of recent years, the glands do a great job here of creating an unassuming album that's easy on the ears but will open up wider and wider the more time you devote to it.
No one I know likes this album.......2004-07-06
I don't know why people don't seem to get this album when I play it for them. They must all be stupid. One could argue that no one likes having music forced on them and that's why they won't listen but this album was forced on me and I loved it as soon as the alarm clock in the first song finished buzzing. As a songwriter I love this album. As a guitar player who misses guitar based rock and roll I love this album. As a lover of shameless pop music and sublime humor I love this album. If you don't like something on this album then it's too late to make out that last will and testament; you're dead.

this athens, georgia band is amazing and this album proves it. this is probably the best music i've heard coming out of that town in a long time. seriously, if you have any kind of appreciation for music, go buy this album right now.
and just to let you know, i got a phone call last week letting me know that they're in the studio ready to make another.

The Glands.......2002-10-01
I discovered the self-titled album by 'The Glands' about month ago. Hailing from Georgia, it combines lazy melodies (almost Grateful Dead-type vocals) with a bluesy gritty lo-fi sound in the same vein as Pavement, The Shins and Olivia Tremor Control. I remember a writer once describing Robbie Robertson and The Band's sound as 'smoked and aged in casks of oak', and that's kinda the impression I get with The Glands. An intimate, canned, guitar-based sound...with a biting sharp edge to it. It's not about quantity here, but about making every note count. Great album.

Beautiful, miraculous, album........2001-04-06
Every time I hear Double Thriller I think about the idea that a society only gets the artists it deserves, and how the album wrecks that idea if only for the space of this--and the next, even better, eponymous--CD. The songs seem to come out of nowhere--rich and delicate, melodious, brittle, intense. It's a wonderful album; I can't believe these songs are in the world with so little fuss made about them. "Skin" is such a lovely song I keep wanting to thank someone, somewhere, for it.

You know how craftsmen are supposed to sculpt and whittle an object down a point where its soul is released to the world? Well, that's how every song on this puppy sounds. This album remains a rare thing: a non-compromising record that sounds freaking awesome.
Incredible.......2000-08-16
I've had this CD since it came out and it's never left my list of favorites. It's incredible. Peaceful, heartwrenching, dopey-grin-inducing songs that won't leave my mind.
Double Thriller Reviewed.......2000-07-31
A swirling mix of opiated pop, floating brittish invasion style tunefullness, and understated soul, "Double Thriller" is an interesting little platter. Alex Chilton's "Like Flies on Sherbert" comes to mind with its eclectic production, as does "Muswell Hillbillies" by The Kinks. The cd's title seems to toss a glance in Michael Jackson's direction, and Nick Drake almost haunts a few of the more melancholic arrangements. But this album has its own signature and I'm looking forwards to The Gland's next.
One of the Best Albums in Recent History.......1999-10-23
Ross Shapiro and his band of cohorts have silently created one of the best albums of the 90's. It's too bad they haven't been accepted by a wider audience, but artistry doesn't demand popularity. I'm waiting for their next album with baited breath.

Great!!.......2003-10-30
This is not music for everybody.
Matt Hall told me he doesn't really sing lyrics.
He vocalizes in some sort of language secret even to him.
His voice is a little like Tom Waits at times, though.
The Double U's music can be like a carnival at times,
and at other times it is straightforward rock music.
But they are still one of the most unique bands i've ever heard.
Check out Lihg and Emperor Jones. Two of the best tracks.
the second disc is great as well. It is the Double U songs deconstructed and made into something incredibly unique.
