Product Description
Although famous for her blend of pop and country, Shania Twain proves she's a rocker at heart with the release of Among My Souvenirs, a collection of songs record and co-written by Paul Sabu during the infamous Deerhurst Sessions back in 1988-1991. Unoffi

Mellow melancholia.......2006-07-24
Alright, you wanna get Mazzy Star's best album? Well, here you go. I'd be lying if I said all their material isn't great, but I think they finally captured an entirely consistent album with "Among My Swan".
You have the beautiful swirling guitar melody with "Disappear", the songs "Flowers In December" and "Rhymes of an Hour" that lean on the acoustic side, those country/folksy gems "Cry, Cry" and "I've Been Let Down", "Take Everything" full of intense emotion, the darkly mysterious "All Your Sisters" and "Umbilical", the insanely gorgeous and heartbreaking tale of a female dealing with internal struggles on "Roseblood", and beautiful organ music on "Look On Down From the Bridge" that would be perfect for a funeral.
I suppose this album does show they only got better in time. Though unfortunately, this is the last album they've put out in years. Maybe that'll change because I'm anticipating the future release another Mazzy album.
Other stuff to check out.......2006-06-21
I am a huge fan of catchy, quiet yet melodic folk/pop. If you enjoy this album then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) What's Next To The Moon by Mark Kozelek
2) Paper Dolls And Paper Plates by Fear Of Commitment
3) So Tonight That I Might See by Mazz Star
4) Songs About Leaving by Carissa's Wierd
Something To Remember.......2006-01-11
Zanimljivo je to da se od 1996 nije pojavio ni jedan bend koji bi mogao da zameni Mazzy Star.
Album Among My Swan je remek-delo koje je vredno vase paznje.
Glas Hope Sandoval ostaje vecno u vama. Obratite paznju samo na recimo Flowers In December, Cry Cry ili Take Everything, to je samo mali deo.
Uzivajte.
Mazzy Star su jedna od najboljih bendova koji su se ikada desili svetu.
Among my favorite CD's!.......2005-10-09
To truly understand Mazzy Star, I think you need to listen to this cd with the lights off or at least with your eyes closed. This is a great cd to put in after a breakup, on a rainy day, to relax to when you're depressed, feeling mellow, or, if you're into bands like Radiohead, The Doors, or anything psychdelic, I think you'll really be able to appreciate this Mazzy Star.
1. Disappear -Starts out very chilled, mellow and relaxed the minute you press play. The beat of the guitar and the chimes I can't even describe. It just sounds like sparkling rain. A sad one, but great to listen to if your in that kind of mood.
2. Flowers In December -Really pretty. Hope play harmonica on here and the sound of it made me love this song right away. The baseline also sounds great, and I love the lyrics. "Send me your flowers of your december, send me your dreams of candy wine."
3. Rhymes Of An Hour -Featured in the movie "Stealing Beauty" this one is very mellow and slow but grows on you after awhile. I seem to like it more each time I listen to it. The music sounds like it almost have some marraccas in it I believe.
4. Cry, Cry -If you felt the disappearing vibe on track one, you're going to definetly hear the crying vibe on here. This is such a real song you can almost see happening to you with a tearjearker chorus and lyrics.
5. Take Everything -Awesome guitar in here. ..and just like I explained with "Cry" and "Disappear," I also felt like the lyrics brilliantly fit the mood of the whole beat of this song. My favorite Mazzy Star song on here probably.
6. Still Cold -I think this one of the fastest songs on here, but I loved it right away. Starts out kind of quiet then gets a bit louder and then the guitars just shatter as soon as the chorus comes in. You can really feel what Hope is singing here too. One of their best!
7. All Your Sisters -I agree with what one of the other viewers posted on this one. I can definetly see myself listening to this on at beach at night. The sound of her voice I just can't describe it sounds so warm and soothing, and the lyrics in here are very mysterious, now what I expected to hear at all.
8. I've Been Let Down -A folksy mazzy song, melencholy, sounds a bit blues too, but it contains some great lyrics, and some beautiful harmonica. "Catch a train on a silver afternoon...."
9. Roseblood -I love this one. It's a song I believe about a girl who seems to be falling apart. There is also an awesome guitar solo at the end. This is definetly a standout Mazzy Star track in my opinion.
10. Happy -Has that sparkling wind chime beat that Disappear seemed to have. It's very mellow, soft, sweet, and has pretty lyrics. "Oceans pass my eyes, it shimmers and glows...."
11. Umbilical -A stream of consciousness, this song is completely all over the place. The lyrics are very pecuilar, but interesting, I suggest you look them up. This song starts out with a very hush organ at first but continues to get more and more distored in sound as it keeps playing.
12. Look On Down From The Bridge -Starts out with beautiful organ on this one as well. This song is very sad and very soft. I also agree with what another reviewer mentioned about it, I can definetly see this being played at someones funeral. A long, beautiful song.
I really suggest adding this to your collection of you're even thinking about it, you don't know what you're missing. This is one of the first Cd's I think of putting in when I down, or tired or just need to relax. Hope Sandovals whispery voice is like a lullaby, and David Roback on guitar leaves an amazing guitar with memorable solos I guarentee you will putting on repeat and wanting to learn how to play. If this band would have came out in the 70's, I bet they would have been on tour with The Doors. This is truly an underrated band.
A Good Album.......2005-10-07
This is a very good album which, everyone should buy. If you like this album or Mazzy Star's other music you might like KMB's "For Now & Forever Remixed" or "Lo-Fi Audio"

Customer Reviews:
Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20
The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.
The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.
Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.
Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.
Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01
I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.
So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!
Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27
Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.
JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11
JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.
The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.
Garland the Great.......2002-05-02
A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

Your search for good Burns songs has ended.......2000-01-29
Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

Memory Songs.......2002-07-23
"Among My Souvenirs" is a charming, nostalgic album perfect for Joni James' sweet style. Really lovely, and a classic in it's own way.
This CD contains two of Joni James' best albums........1999-09-27
"Among My Souvenirs" has simple arrangements, and Ms. James' voice sounds clear and beautiful in this setting. Her rendition of "Always" is the best version I have ever heard of what is one of my favorite songs. This and "Alice Blue Gown" and "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" are the three songs I like best on "Among My Souvenirs." "Joni Sings Irish Favorites" has lusher orchestrations than the other album. These are totally orginal takes on Irish favorites. I especially like "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral," "How Are Things in Glocca Morra," "Molly Malone," "Danny Boy," "Believe Me if All Those Endearing Young Charms," and "Mother Machree." For those just discovering Ms. James' music, this CD would be a perfect introduction. For those who are already fans of Ms. James, this CD is a must.
The Original.......1999-08-05
These two M-G-M Records classics show how original Joni James was and is in coming up with album projects. "Among My Souvenirs" is an ice-cream-on-the-porch collection of sentimental pop songs, folk pieces and traditional pieces. "Irish Favorites" is a gorgeous collection of carefully-selected songs sung gloriously by Joni to outstanding orchestrations. Twenty-four songs, each and every one a gem, by a singer unlike any other.
Well done, beautiful memory trip for me........1999-07-20
The audio quality of this CD and her voice are both excellent. I been searching for recordings by her of this quality and My search is over. I have two recordings from the Joni Collection (TARCD-3006 and TARCD-3002) Both are very good.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2001-07-29
This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.
Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22
This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.
This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.
if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26
this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great
The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02
When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!
Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25
Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.
This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

Customer Reviews:
When looking for "the most".......2001-05-14
A local New York professional opera enthusiast has concluded that Corelli is the most popular operatic tenor, followed by Jussi Bjoerling. But if the question is, who had the most beautiful tenor voice ever impressed upon wax, we must lift up John McCormack. Here is true bel canto which no one else has ever equalled. These two CD's contain some of the most exquisite sounds ever issued by a human throat. Let the galleries declare their enthusiasm for stentorian high C's, the real lover of great singing will find much more to their like her than in all the verisssimo arias. Listen to the two "Mefistofele" Arias (Boito) and ask yourself if they have ever since been so beautifully sung. This recording belongs in the collection of every aspiring tenor, just to remind what can be accomplished by art and perfect singing.
A superb McCormack collection.......2000-10-21
If you remember hearing transfers of acoustic recordings to LP, you remember how hard it was to really connect with the music and performer through all the rumble, noise and resonance. This audio restoration is the most astonishing technical feat I have ever heard. The noise is now only a gentle background presence, not the roar of yesteryear. And even more important, it is constant in volume- in other words not a distraction. The fidelity really lets us hear what the early recording engineers really achieved. That said, what this brings to us are the performances of one of the world's greatest singers in richly emotional popular songs (and a few opera arias). There are so many of those old sentimental pieces no one could get away with recording anymore, but hold such a splendid reward for those of us who love them. John McCormack's recordings receive with this reissue the wonderful presentation they so richly deserve. Many many thanks to the label and Mr. Marston who made it possible.
Simply the Best.......2000-01-27
This along with Vol. 1 is simply the best McCormack transfers available from this period. The master of the trade, Ward Marston has outdone himself this time. Waiting for Vols. 3,4,5!
