A Masterpiece Sampler.......2001-08-12
This CD is a real classic among enthusiasts of Late 20th Century Music. It offers jazz, contemporary, and even minimalist genres of music. John Somebody started out as my favorite selection from this CD many years ago, as it makes a good example of spoken word turned into music. In addition, the Philip Glass selections make a wonderful introduction to his music. I could go on and on about all of the music on this Sampler, as all of it is excellent.
I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is either an enthusiast of late 20th century music or anyone who is curious. My disclaimer, however, comes in that this is not for someone who is not open to new things. Some of the music on this CD can be like an acquired taste. In the meantime, enjoy!
Eclectic Feast.......2000-03-24
Every piece on this album is strikingly original. In fact, I have purchased 4 other albums from the artists on this CD just to hear more of what they have to offer! Should appeal to lovers of world music, jazz and classical.

Disappointing, but expected.......2005-02-05
I saw Saga go downhill after "Behavior" and this album clinches the deal. I could not find a *single* song that I thought was listenable, or anywhere near Saga's past talent.
Time and time again, Amazon reviews are only submitted by fans, leaving far too many good reviews and inflated ratings of everything. This is an example of that. It's so bad that I'm coining it the "Amazon.com effect" when I run into it in other things!
Perfection........2002-06-13
Saga fans either love Generation 13, or they despise it. Personally, I think it is their masterwork...and it's unfortunate that few bands during the 90's had the testicular fortitude to pull something like this off.
If you've read the song titles, you may have gathered that this is a concept album. While the storyline can be a bit vague at times, it is quite engaging: the story of the generation gaps between a baby-boomer father and his Gen-X son. This makes for the kind of recording that should be listened to once while reading the lyrics, a second time in the dark with headphones on, and then by the third pass the depth of the music will begin to reveal itself.
While there is not the level of virtuoso performance that can be found in some of Saga's other works, the playing is far better than most other groups of the period. There is also a surprising amount of variety to this disk...at times dissonent and unsettling, at others majestic and rocking.
The other thing that I find surprising about this CD is how it sounds like other groups through certain sections of music. At times the songs sound like Queensryche in one section, and be followed by something that sounds like Queen...or Pink Floyd...or Gamma...etc. But it is always done with Saga's unique flair.
If you are a fan of progressive rock, you are probably familiar with Saga...and this may or may not be your cup of tea. A good comparison for the prog fan would be "The Visitor" by Arena, which is of similar style. Regardless, I feel that this is an essential addition to a good prog-rock collection, and quite possibly the best concept recording since Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood". Sam says "buy it!"
Talk about a concept album!!!.......2002-05-24
This is one of my favorite CD's, and I have over 700 cd's, it is hard to understand when you first listen to it, but once you get a hold of it, it absorbs you and makes you feel what the main character feels. I have always identified this CD with Tommy's story from the Who, but it is hard to compare, because you have to be in diferent moods to understand both CD's.
If you never heard Saga, do yourself a favor and buy something else, like "Worlds Apart", but if you are a big time fan of Saga and you dont have the CD, buy it now and I mean now, because it will develope a whole new stage of Saga you did not even know it existed.
Concept album with some great moments.......1999-12-03
For Saga fans, this CD is a return of sorts to their heyday (1979-1983)--is say 'of sorts' because this is a concept album unlike anything they have created before. The only problem I have with 'Generation 13' is that a number of the songs/themes, though solid, moving pieces of music, are repeated. My personal favorite is 'No Strings Attached,' a mid-tempo, bluesy number with some great slide guitar. Other standouts are 'The Cross,' 'I'll Never Be Like You,' 'Chances Are,' 'The Victim,' and 'Screw 'Em.' I definitely recommend this album for anyone interested in modern, neo-prog ala Marillion or anyone who might remember the old Saga classics like 'Wind Him Up,' 'On The Loose,' and 'Catwalk.'

Customer Reviews:
Easily Their Best.......2005-03-20
Great concept album...great musicianship ... great songs. This band works better in the concept structure. They should do more of this type of work. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to like on their other albums but this is in a class all by itself. I would compare this as others have to Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime because it conveys a nightmarish future atmosphere. Don't expect the metal of the Ryche but do expect great music.
solid work.......2004-06-10
Being a fan of prog rock and the concept album, I stumbled upon Gen 13 through this site. I was a bit hesitant to buy an album from a group, which I've heard one song over the past 20 years. I thought what the heck, it getting great reviews. Even though Saga seems to be getting "older" their sound has matured.
I'm not a huge fan of over-stylized keyboards, such as the early '80's sound seemed to have, Gen 13 does it just right. This is album has everything a concept album should; interesting story line, inserted melodies and flow, and muscial craftmanship. The subtle background voices blend well within the storyline, making the listener pick up something different each time.
Gen 13 made me go on to buy other Saga albums, much of those early on in their career. Being in my 30's I'm not biased toward the "cheesey 80's" sound, but Saga's current albums are more diverse when it comes to instruments.
Give this a listen, without reading the lyrics, and definatley not in a car! Great album to sit on the beach and listen too with earphones. This is a lost treasure, and recommend any DT fan, Pink Floyd fan etc... to check this out.
UNCUT VERSION AS IT WAS MEANT !!!!.......2004-05-28
The original version was around 60 minutes. These new remastered version is uncut with 9 additional minutes of music. Saga is a band that can musically bring you any type of music and succeed. Any true Saga fan will accept anything they bring and enjoy it. A great concept album next to Queensryche "Operation: Mindcrime". Great vocals, guitars, keyboards and drums also a great story. How many bands can work together for 25 years and keep it's original members together ? ex: Rush, Saga, etc...
As a true Saga fan I enjoy everything they bring. But Saga first three albums "Saga", "Images at Twilight" and "Silent Night" are the true icons and signature albums.
Quintessential Saga.......2004-04-10
To some, this CD is the absolute worst of Saga. To some, it's the absolute best. I believe this is one of the most structured and well thought out pieces of Rock Opera in a VERY VERY long time. The band worked hard on this CD and it shows. Every song, melody and note placed on this CD was placed with care to bring the story to life (as depressing as it is). Musically, it's not a virtuoso piece of music, but it doesn't need to be. It needs to be what it is to tell the story, and Saga does this exceedingly well. Unlike other bands like Dream Theater that tend to go over the top and kill the story underlying the song with their over-the-top technical playing, Saga did not do this on Generation 13.
I believe that, by far, this is definitely one of their best works and at the same time one of their most different and unique, but still with Saga flair. It is a hard listen because you have to listen to the entire CD in one sitting. The songs aren't structured in such a way as to bring one song out as 'radio hit' and one song doesn't really stand on it's own without the context of the story. Basically, you listen to the work as a whole or you don't. And, it's difficult to sit down and listen to a 60 minute CD. Worse, the story is depressing which makes the work even stronger considering how difficult it is to bring this level of detail out musically.
But, barring these problems, if you pop this CD into your player, turn the light out and listen to the story and the music, you have to be impressed by their mastery of both telling the story musically and the music itself.
If you are into concept albums like Tommy or The Wall, this one definitely sits right up there with these works. I definitely recommend it.
The production quality: 5 stars
The music itself: 5 stars
The sound quality: 5 stars
great cd but remastered version drops artwork.......2003-07-08
One of the most surprising grand efforts by saga in the 90s. This is the remastered version, sounds great but the art that was on the original cd, gone. Some of the cool photos from the original .....gone. So my only reason for 4 stars, they were cheap on the artwork. I guess they dont care about the fans.

Something less brought about a certain prolixity...but is OK.......2003-03-08
Well this album-issued on 1995-was the big turn of their career towards a more progressive sound of their own!! That is this was an important concept album for the famous canadian ensemble, based upon an unknown book (to me unknown naturally!) "13 GEN abort retry ignote 63" by Howe and Strauss: the story takes place in the 21th century, within an apocalyptic scene regarding N.Y.C and its new Generation X... Jim Gilmour is involved with the orchestrations on keyboards and the vocals as well, making a great job; while Ian Crichton as usual utilizes a lot of guitars, always put in evidence in a powerful manner -almost in the vein of prog-metal music- in order to let the story become more dramatic and violent...sometimes some orchestral breaks through and a vivid narration as well, also performed by an Android voice and a young child too, make this album very interesting and under a costant high tension!! The main defect of this album is its prolixity and the excessive repetition of the same themes almost all along the story, which at last becomes quite boring. But, apart from this considerations, this is their first attempt to break the schemes, with their purpose to abandon the simple structure of a song and looking forward to emulating the famous rock opera of the seventies!! The great final section of the album is represented by a fantastic modern symphonic stuff, with a stunning crescendo and the final catharsis of the drama.
This is the most progressive effort by Saga and it is worth checking out, even though is prolix in some circumstances;but for sure the fans of 70's prog this time have to bestow a "favour" or a chance on this band, often regarded as too much mainstream ...REMARKABLE STUFF!!
Very good and strange.......2002-08-21
This is a very good cd and also very strange in parts. The Cross, the second track and no strings attached are the best songs on it. It does get a little strange in parts.
Conceptual Gamble.......2002-08-02
Obviously a concept album based on a book of the same name, Generation 13 is not your typical release from these prog-rock masters. It's a hard listen to be sure and if you know nothing about the book, you are lost indeed. It doesn't get a lot of cd player time for me but I do applaud Saga for taking chances. Very interesting vocals from Jim Gilmour. Very good sound quality.
Think while you listen.......2001-08-02
Many of the people who enjoy this kind of music are adults, because it seems to me that all average 12 through 21-year-olds, besides me, have no taste in music whatsoever and only listen to junk. Well, I am 15 and I was raised on this kind of music. In 1st grade, I would always wake up to the sweet morning sounds of Saga blaring on my father's stereo. Needless to say, I grew to love bands like Pink Floyd (The Wall being my favorite of theirs) and Saga.
Generation 13 is indeed a dark album, and I would love to see how well an average 15-year-old, who thinks that they are shocking America with Eminem or Limp Biskit, can listen to this ablum without becoming sick to their stomach. It is pure genious, for Saga found no need to use vulgarity to create an incredibly macabe experience. They used two things: incredible lyrics and instrumentation, and a small, dysfunctional boy character named Sam. One must be an intellegent individual to fully understand the depths of this album. I really do love this CD, for it takes you to a world of darkness and great music by a great band. The question is, can you take the intensity?
The best of all, but a big turn..........2001-03-19
Saga has been one of my favorite bands when I was 18, along with Genesis, Alan Parsons, Marillion, Pink Floyd, and a bunch of other "progressive rock" bands... I loved it the first time I heard it, and the love lasted for a long time... in fact until they released wildest dreams... this one really killed me... then I moved around and have been looking for new titles, but Saga has unfortunately no big notoriety, and their albums are usually hard to find, classified in Hard rock bands (which is really stupid), and I finally kind of "forgot" about them, focusing on life and work...
But tastes never really die, and last Christmas I wanted to make myself a gift and looked for Saga on Amazon and found several "new" (to me) albums among which "Generation 13". And it has been a shock to me!
"Saga est mort, vive Saga": this album is really EXCELLENT. It's not at all the former "Saga sound", but it's really much better. If you liked The Wall, then you'll love Generation 13. But the comparison stops here. In my opinion - although some people may not like it - it's almost better than the Wall, just because the Wall was really too long...
As some other reviewer said sooner, you have to close your eyes and imagine things... Then you're in the movie.
If you already know Saga and are not afraid of - good - changes, or if you don't know Saga, but are simply curious, just give this album a try. Maybe you won't like it, because it's indeed quite dark - as was The Wall too - but if you do, then you won't just like it, you'll probably play it again and again...
Thank you Saga for that piece of Art, I'd just like it to get more famous because it really deserves it.
Phil.
