Not the best compilation there is, but not that bad.......2005-11-06
If you enjoy stuff along the lines of Strip / Crypt's compilations "Jungle Exotica", that this will be right up your alley. The songs all have a common Jungle-theme, but the styles are uneven, which upsets most people about the series. There's exotica, native music, pop-rock, surf-rock, ect. The thing that I enjoy though is the high kitsch factor of all the songs. Everyone is campy as all hell, which I love and is what I look for in music like this. Esquivel, Martin Denny, and Raymond Scott were all very talented composers, but outside of that the lounge genre is great mainly for the excessively dated camp appeal. Its just odd to think that people actually considored the songs on this sampler to have hit appeal. As for the songs themselves, some are amusingly dated and others are just so-so. The Buddy Holly-esque Hawaiian rocker "Native Love" is among the highlights as many people have pointed out, but some of the other tracks I enjoyed were "Swahili", "Bongo Twist", and "On the Ginza". All in all, a fun sampler, not nearly as bad as some have made it out to be, but also not the best you can buy.
We have no bananas........2005-04-29
This is a rather uneven compilation album featuring rare recordings from the Del-Fi Records vaults. The songs loosely have an "exotic" theme, but they are in a variety of styles. Some of the styles are lounge instrumetal, pop vocal, rock and roll, surf, latin and some that are hard to catagorize. "Native Love" is an "exotic rocker" that has a strangely Buddy Hollyesque feel to it. Another odd one is "On the Ginza", which in an instrumental that has a woman saying Japanese phrases periodically. My favorites are the tracks by the Rockyfellers (a family group from the Philippines that had a hit with "Killer Joe" in 1963) and Pepino (played by Tony Martinez on The Real McCoys sitcom). Pepino's "Rum and Coca Cola" is a great Desi Arnez soundalike song. There are some songs here that aren't that great. But fans of unusual sounds will probably find something to enjoy here.
Very Cool.......2004-05-30
This CD is a really fun collection of odd songs that you won't find anywhere else. If you dig retro music like the Capital Utlra Lounge Series, you won't be dissapointed. The Cd is a bit uneaven and gets a little slow in the middle, but well worth it for the following songs: Native Love (my favorite track by far!), Jungle Fever (I could do without the added sound effects), Beachcomber Song, Rum and Coca-Cola, Bongo Twist, Karate Again (instramental), Woman Needs Man (silly but fun banana song), Cubalibr(instramental) and Terror (a really cool Ventures sounding instramental). There are a lot of these retro CD compilations out there, and let's face it, some are great but others really rip you off. This is a great CD (part of a three cd set...Jungle Jive, Pool Party and Beach Party). And...I don't know how much I would trust a reviewer who doesn't realize that the very funny liner notes are fictional. The packaging is well done, even the disc is printed in full color and Kari Wuhrer is some really nice eye candy!
What a dud! These songs are so lame...........2003-11-20
screw this. i found this for like 2 bucks and thought why not? what a bummer dude. all of these songs are really slick "bachelor-pad" crap... only one good song, "swahili" sounds really good with cool sound effects but the rest blows... i don't get if the liner notes are a joke or not either... really weird. but if ya dig exotica and want the real deal check out "chaino" or "jungle exotica" cds, or dig the touch of evil soundtrack by mancini! that guy was a genius! skip this batch of slick turds....

Instrumentals-- with STYLE!!.......2000-11-02
Veering off the path of "surf" and into "lounge", "exotica" and "bachelor pad" music go The Huntington Cads. Chris Barfield & Steve Hill, formerly 2/5ths of The Finks (and the latter also an ex-member of The Kinks-sound-alikes The Witch Doctors) have taken their love for instrumental music in an entirely different direction than their former bandmates (who now call themselves The Bomboras). In this case, the MUSIC is far more outstanding, and deserving of wider attention!
Check out, if you can find it, their 2nd CD, INTRODUCE THE NEW SOUND, as well as a pair of 7" EPs, BIG GUITARS WESTERN STYLE and 5...4...3...2...1...CADS ARE GO! They also appear on the following comps: SHOTS IN THE DARK: DEL-FI DOES MANCINI ("Arabesque"), AN EVENING IN NIVRAM: THE MUSIC OF THE SHADOWS ("Gonzales"), ROCK DON'T RUN VOL.3 ("Lunar Luau"), "TIGER MASK: TRASH AU GO-GO ("Ann Isabel"), and SWINGIN' CREEPERS!: A TRIBUTE TO THE VENTURES ("Sha La La"). Happy hunting!
Great surf combo.......1999-05-30
If you love to play along with surf instrumental music - check this one out. I have greatly improved my guitar playing by carefully playing each tune on this album over and over until I mastered them. Intriguing. Hope they do another CD soon! Would like to catch them live too.
Great melodic instrumental surf/cocktail.......1998-11-23
A great mix of lower-keyed guitar twang and catchy and quick musicianship. The control of the guitar is mezmerizing at times. The whole album is good clean fun.
These 'Cads are Go!.......1998-09-17
This is a very stylin' release. Kick back, put on your smoking jacket, pour a martini and bask in beautiful music - tight guitar instrumentals and lush rhythms all beautifully played. I don't know if these guys have ever seen a surfboard, much less been on one, but who cares? A must for any serious collector of surf-guitar instrumentals.
