Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

Any new compilation CD starring Yo-Yo Ma is certain to please. This master of the cello takes the listener through so many types of music that the ear and mind never tire. The present selection is billed as a sort of "musical autobiography," and, indeed, it gives us a tour of Ma's musical life. The Silk Road Project is represented by Zhao's "Swallow Song," with its eerie, fascinating soundscape (specially re-recorded for this CD). We also accompany Ma on his excursions into the world of the baroque cello with Vivaldi or of the Finnish folk song (by Mamiya, a first recording). There are Gershwin's languid Second Prelude, with its intimations of the song "Summertime," and an all-new recording of a nine-minute heart-breaker by Astor Piazzolla ("Soledad"). Ma also gives us more familiar Brahms, Franck, and Saint-Saens. The compilation's mellow 65 minutes offer relaxing, beautiful music, all exquisitely played. Ma is joined by the best: Emanuel Ax, Kathryn Stott, John Williams (who plays piano on his own "Going to School" from Memoirs of a Geisha), Isaac Stern, and Claudio Abbado. Yo Yo Ma is simply fantastic, and has arrived as such a height of recognition that any production he is invovled in will be top of the line, as this is.

This is a darker collection than I expected. And like a serious, reserved friend, it can take a little longer to appreciate than the bubbly outgoing ones. I now find I like it very much, but it is serious "conversation."

There is great variety here as well, and I gave it to a friend's teenager who is considering whether she wants to learn the cello. Her response was much the same as mine. Initially not so sure, but over time, has really come to like it, too. This collection has great depth.

New Age music, ambient electronica, and spiritualized hip-hop received their first major, K-Tel-like treatment in 1996 when Virgin Records assembled Pure Moods. The "As Seen on TV" compilation quickly became a hot seller, and it would be nice to think that its popularity has as much to do with the music as the marketing. To be sure, Pure Moods offers genre hits aplenty: from Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to "Sadness" from Enigma; from a dance mix of the "X-Files Theme" to edits of vintage electronica from Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells) and Jean Michele Jarre (Oxygene). Beyond other selections of beat-enhanced chants and a few other popular themes ("The Mission," "Twin Peaks"), the album, refreshingly, also includes a few selections noteworthy only for their originality and quality. A three-track section near end of the 70-minute disk features affecting soft African chants from Geoffrey Oryema, followed by "My Wife with Champagne Shoulders," a dollop of regal, faintly ethereal romanticism from master film scorer Mark Isham, then a robust piano workout, "The Promise" from Michael Nyman (The Piano). With so many elements of interest on its 17 tracks, the album's broad diversity is sure to have broad popularity. --Terry Wood

I loved the music on here they are so peacful like the xfiles theme tubular bells with the overy babbling melody and crockettes theme which was the best song with no vocals and they saved the best for last LILY WAS HERE with excellent non vocaling music with lite accoustic guitars and perfect saxaphone playing with a touch of soothing melody. My mothers into spiritual things mostly and she loves this pure moods mix of peacful music. I use to listen to this while I sleep I loved it but now I sleep with the fan on because I love to hear the sound of the fan while I sleep.

I must have been around six or seven when I came across this cd through the TV ads. I couldn't buy it myself but I loved the music. It wasn't until I was much older and borrowed it from the library did I remember how much I loved this. I uploaded some of the songs onto my computer, only because I had downloaded some of them already. I started listening to the other pure moods and it's still the same.

Flowing music between ambient, new age, and soft electronica it pulls up its own forrest of emotion as it pulls you closer into the center of yourself. YOu find those pieces of you again that you haven't discovered. A must have for anyone wanting to get in touch with themselves, or just don't know how to relax after a hard day at work.

I must admit, I've always felt kind of silly for owning this CD. Yet it's got wonderful songs on it. Each one sets a tone that carries you throughout. I've had this CD for years and I still pull it out and listen to it.

I use to listen to this cd over and over when I was younger. Happen to run across it in a packed away box. Been listening to it for two months now, love it just as much as when I first gotten it. Matter of fact, after my teenager heard it, he had to have a copy for himself. Lucky, amazon sells it. He loves it just as much as I do.... surely a favorite.

I did checked out the other pure mood cds and they are ok, a few good songs on them but I dont think it can compare to the very first one put together. Every song is amazing.

If you like music with a little color, not to strong, not to weak, but very lovely to hear...recommend this one.

The concluding chapter of director Sergio Leone's epochal Man With No Name trilogy ushered film scorer Ennio Morricone into the pop mainstream courtesy of a hit cover of its main title by American Hugo Montenegro. More importantly, it both showcased the composer's spectacularly inventive range and set him up for even greater triumphs to come with Leone and others. But aficionados of il Maestro Morricone's G,B&U soundtrack knew its original editions contained but the main thematic/musical elements of the spaghetti western epic -- until now. The addition of ten previously unissued cues on this newly remastered edition render the landmark score in its full glory, nearly doubling its running time in the bargain. One of the problems with listening to soundtracks, especially from movies that you are pretty familar with, is that music seems irrevocably tied with the visual imagery of the film. And while this is also true in this case-- the haunting, and by now culturally cliche motif at the heart of the film-- taking the visual away from the music lets you appreciate the music on its own. The "dessert" segment, which in the movie is merely backround, has a life and shape of it's own. With the exception of the oveture and final peice (the most familar to a movie goer) the rest of the music, taken out of the context of the film, has a vibrant, spirited life of its own.

You can listen to this for its own sake--and should.

I wanted the soundtrack from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for a picture video I am doing for my husband's 60th birthday. We have the soundtrack on an album. He loves the movie and the music. I thought I would have trouble getting it on a CD but you proved me wrong. My first try and I found the CD. He does alot of hunting so I am going to use the music for those pictures. Thanks for making it so easy for someone with little experience on the internet to find what I wanted.

Get the import "Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo", by GDM. The sound quality is ten fold better. The expanded version does not do Morricone's talent any justice. And it still has the abridged version of "The Trio".

A bit off topic, I found the same problem with Ikura Ifukube. Again a brilliant composer (known for Godzilla), again short changed by American released CD's. Always go for the import it seems.

The names on this tribute testify to the extraordinarily wide appeal of the Italian film composer Ennio Morricone: not many people could get Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Renée Fleming, and Metallica on one disc. And while the artists come from very diverse genres, the album holds together well. Things start off on a syrupy note with Dion's "I Knew I Loved You," a ballad from 1984's Once Upon a Time in America (to which Alan and Marilyn Bergman added lyrics in 2006). But fortunately the CD quickly recovers and goes on to survey most of Morricone's styles, from the dissonance of his spaghetti Western scores to his mod period to his lush orchestral vistas. Metallica goes all out with guitars blazing on "Ecstasy of Gold," a track they've used as a concert intro for years, while Brazil's Daniela Mercury and Eumir Deodato breeze through "Conmigo," and the French-British combo Vanessa and the O's resuscitate the pure '60s pop of "Je Changerai d'Avis," once performed by Françoise Hardy. As for ballads, listen for soprano Renée Fleming, who surpasses her previous pop-crossover attempts on the fragile "Sail Away." Not sure what there is not to love about this disc. The interpretations are unique, sometimes quirky and always interesting; the recording is gorgeous; and Morricone's segues, which he composed and recorded, are very cool and show that much thought and creativity went into the overall production. (Only complaint is the absence of translations for the foreign-language tracks.) After reading some of these reviews, I had doubts about making the purchase. Now I'm so grateful that I did! Highly recommended!

I am a "die hard" Ennio Morricone fan and have been since 1968, so I can't understand for the life of me why the other reviews for this disk are so negative about this absolutely beautiful album!

I was thrilled to see Ennio finally receive an Academy Award this year! He deserved to receive many Academy Awards over the past 40 years for all his magnificent works. Next to Elmer Bernstein, I consider him my favorite film composer. Many of the selections on this album I had never heard before. Metallica playing "The Ecstacy of Gold" is absolutely reiveting! Andrea Bocelli is a perfect fit to sing Ennio's songs. Incidentally, Mr. Bocelli also sings two of Ennio's otherwise unknown songs on one of his older albums. Unknown to us in the USA only because Ennio has chosen to focus his life's work on mostly Italian film scores.

I only wish his scores were more accessable to us living outside of Italy. I have much of his film music, but it's still very hard to find. I truly feel that the genius of Ennio's music will not fully be appreciated until after he is gone from us.

So to anyone who really wants to know what a modern film score genius sounds like...BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

a very diverse and interesting collection of hybrid pieces based upon the work of morricone. my only complaint was that the invited artists were not highlighted enough in the pieces. otherwise, i would given this a 5. I especially liked the european flavor of many of the pieces.

This CD was a real disappointment. It was contrived by using famous names to sing songs that should have been orchestred pieces. Yo-Yo-Ma-Plays-Ennio-Morricone was superb and I had expected some of the same quality which is not there.

Not that I'm a total die-hard fan, but I spent several years collecting the most obscure Morricone soundtracks I could find. And I just saw him perform at the United Nations and Radio City Music Hall in February 2007. Initially, I had high hopes for this CD. Those hopes didn't last much into the first listen...

This tribute album is cover versions of only (arguably) his most popular songs. The covers on this album pale, in general, to the originals. Some are just plain emotionless. Celine Dion and Metallica in particular manage to suck the life out of Morricone's originals. As cover versions, they're vulgar. But that's part and parcel of the Morricone catalog; in over 400 soundtracks, you will find as much beauty as you will vulgarity. In that respect, this CD might still represent his body of work even if it doesn't translate it very well. There is some good, some bad, and some just ugly.

We may all love Morricone, but we do not all love to hear his work treated the way some of these artists chose to treat it. If you're like me, you'll prefer to spend your money on Morricone's original works (though a few do appear on this CD). I recommend "Crime and Dissonance", a compilation of Morricone music curated by Mike Patton, released on Patton's Ipecac label.

Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore billed The Legend of 1900 not as a film, but rather a fable. But crucially, it's also that rare film whose musical score essentially involves one of its lead characters. Here, the great composer Ennio Morricone has concocted a score that's as magical as Cinema Paradiso, the team's previous musical watershed, yet gratifyingly disparate. Though Morricone takes many of his thematic cues from the rich, raucous music of the jazz age (including rags by Jelly Roll Morton and Scott Joplin), he seamlessly fuses them with his own pastoral neoclassicism and distinctly modern sensibilities. The result is a score whose philosophical kinship with The Mission is as alike as their music is wholly different--a masterful fusion of dissimilar elements in a compelling, new whole. While jazz purists may balk, Morricone devotees will be enraptured. Though his career has spanned 40 years and some 400 films, Il Maestro's invention and playful exuberance once again seem both ageless and exhilarating. This was such a good movie! I can't believe I had never heard of it- it should have won awards. I loved it so much I made everyone I knew see it. The only thing was I didn't notice all the F-bombs until watching it with my mom, then I was uncomfortably aware of them. Some were pretty necessary to the story but not all of them were. Other than that this is now one of my favorite movies of all time.

That would be the fault of Sony, for not including all the tracks as in the full original Italian version. I've bought that version, and I don't think I missed out on so much. After all, the highlight of this album, worth the price of admission alone, is Morricone's single best work out of many, many film scores: Track 2, "The Legend of the Pianist." Romantic, lush, exhilirating, it's an 8-minute joyride with a narrative development and resolution all unto itself. It goes well beyond any movie that it may have been scored for. For sheer beauty, it goes beyond "Deborah's Theme" (Once Upon a Time in America), "Love in the Morning" (Lolita), the main theme to "Once Upon a Time in the West," "Cinema Paradiso," "Gabriel's Oboe" (The Mission), etc. etc. It's apparently become a staple in Morricone's concert performances, and for good, obvious reason. I'm also plenty delighted with the other richly Romantic tracks on this album: "1900's Theme" (exhiliration in 98 seconds), "The Crisis," "Nocturne with no Moon," the two versions of "Playing Love," "Mozart Reincarnated," and "Ships and Snow." Out of the several major Morricone soundtracks I own or have heard (see above), this is rather easily my favorite.

It's a shame that this score hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves, simply because the movie it was scored for has received little recognition. I hope that I will be pleased to see "The Legend of the Pianist" becoming, in time, widely recognized as the outstanding piece of music that it is. Romanticism in music is still alive, and it's in film scores, and we have composers like Morricone to thank for this.

I saw the movie "The Legend of 1900" after reading a review of it. It seemed like an interesting idea. The movie was pretty good. The music in the movie was outstanding. I wish I could get the complete musical score, but this CD has a good amount of the music from the movie. I enjoy piano music and this has an assortment of classically influenced music, as well as some early jazz type numbers. I recommend seeing the movie and I heartily recommend this soundtrack.

This soundtrack is absolutely incredible! However, I just wanted to put a word in about the Italian version. I found the 29-track version while I was in Italy this past summer. I was ecstatic! I bought it and listened to it every chance I could get. It is well worth the amount on the site refrenced to in another review. I highly recommend making the purchase. You'll be glad you did!

The inspired melodic vein of Ennio Morricone is simply out of this world. He possesses that coveted gift of diving into the core of every score with such depth of feeling and whole understanding of the material, without concessions of sentimental effects. Acquire it and convince by yourself. He is among the great composers of the genre of easy to listen music.

I recently learned that Ennio Morricone had written some songs that I dearly loved. However, when I purchased the CD, I thought the music was grainy - like it was recorded off of an old soundtrack. I have heard better renditions.

I was very happy to finally find this compilation but I was truly disappointed to find out that the second track "for a few dollars more" was not the original "whistled" version that I grew up loving. Instead they chose to put an orchestral version. I do not know how they, at Virgin Records, let that happen, it seems an invitation to buy another disc. The rest of the tracks are the really great music from Morricone that we are used to listen.

When I ordered this product it was not available in the States, so I was pleased to find it shipped from the UK. Very worth the bit of extra postage. I played it constantly for the first week I had it. Am now playing it just once per week, but still find the music and arrangements inspired, inspiring and way above the normal selections one finds of Morricone in collections. Top quality all the way.

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.
