New York State's God Street Wine is another improvising rock Group that built a strong live following in the "jam-band" underground without major-label help. After God Street Wine sold out the 1,000-seat Irving Plaza in New York on its own, Geffen not only signed the band but also offered them their own custom label, Eleven Records. After three self-released albums, God Street Wine's Geffen debut, $1.99 Romances, separates the group from the jam-band pack by using Steely Dan as its main model rather than the usual choices of the Grateful Dead or the Allman Brothers. --Geoffrey Himes

God Street Jam........2003-07-07

To the March 29th review, look in the insert for cover information. This is a good listen, but I always think of them as being alot better live. I saw them twice, and they are a good band to watch with a beer in your hand. As far as "1.99 Romances" goes, it's the first thing I put in when I want to hear a toe tappin' jam band......right after "Blues Traveler", "Dave Matthews", "Currently Nameless", "Phish", "Spin Doctors", and "The Dead". Really though, they're not bad. It's worth at least $1.99.

I really like this band, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me more about the cover art? Who painted it, etc? I wouldn't mind getting a print....

Good to the Last Drop.......2001-12-18

Man, I was AT these shows, and I still can't believe how great this disc sounds! Any fan who's seen GSW @ the Wetlands can tell you that those shows were special, but the "farewell" shows just blew my mind. The disc showcases great tracks from all three nights, starting with one of the most spirited and all-out "Wendy's" I've ever heard. (Gives me chills!) Also worth mentioning are old favorites "Goodnight Gretchen," "Borderline," "Mantoloking," "Water," and "Diana." As a special treat, the boys pulled out there most infamous and out-there cover of all time, Madonna's "Express Yourself." It was certainly a gift to those lucky fans who heard the earlier version, way back in 1996.

Last but not least, these shows feature GSW founding members Tomo on drums, and Jon Bevo on keys, as well as their excellent replacements Aubrey Dayle and Peter Levin, respectively. Not to mention the times when they were all playing together, with all those guests up there...I was amazed that many people could fit on that tiny stage.

The recordings are direct-from-the-board ADATs, though there may be a bit of post-production work in there to clean up the track transfers. All GSW fans should own this disc, even if you've already got these sets.

Easily GSW's most solid work from top to bottom........1999-03-25

In an age when non-talented, "3 chords in 3 minutes" bands are cashing in on nieve listeners, it's refreshing to be able to find a band that truly gets it. If your looking for a band with traditional rock, blues, and funk influences, then GSW is a band worth your time. $1.99 delivers with a sprinkling of all the above styles with killer jams that make most pop bands look like sallys. Start with $1.99 and work your way through the catelog. But for the best GSW experience, SEE THEM LIVE!

Great CD.......1999-01-15

This is a great CD, one of GSWs best. All the song are good, compared to some CD with only a few. Live, GSW is great and their other CDs are highly recommended

This CD is my favorite out of the many I have. I have searched for a great rock/funk CD for a long time, and have finally found one. This CD provides me with hours of listening. GSW is a great live band that has two lead guitarists/vocalists. The sounds of GSW are similar to Phish, and the GratefulDead. Recorded in NYC, Chicago, White Plains(NY), and Fort Collins(Co). The band plays in bars, but does so greatly. They rock away with every note of their guitars. A really great band, and I am sad to see them go.

GSW's best, IMHO.......1999-08-18

Any GSW fan will tell you that you have to see them live to really understand what they're about. This CD is the next best thing. GSW's studio albums (with the exception of "RED") tend to be very polished-sounding. That's not a bad thing, but this album, being live, is much grittier, and just plain more fun. Some great jamming going on during "Snake Eyes", "Feel the PRessure", "Imogene" (which includes a Tweezer tease!), "Hellfire", and "Driving West". "Crashing Down" is one of their most intense songs, IMHO, and "Stranger" is my favorite GSW ballad. And "Hollow Frog" is just plain nutty.

This is easily one of the best live albums put out by a band in the "jam band" genre. "Snake Eyes," "Hellfire," "Driving West" all envoke a feeling of being in a smokey bar listening to five incredibly talented musicians play off each other. 10 years together has made this band as tight as any band you've ever heard.

Almost worth it.......1998-08-24

This album comes down to two songs that are REALLY good. "Driving West", and "Feel the Pressure" I feel these two songs are indicative of the musical and song writing potential within the band. So keep that in mind. But keep this in mind too: Driving West is one of the coolest rock songs you will hear...it's your call.

This is the best album of all time. Every track seems to get stuck in your head and you can't help but keep a beat to it. The songs groove from mellow to rockin'. The lyrics are pure genuis and can be heart wrenching or make you smile. Buy this album.

Best GSW CD around. this Cd has 13 awesome songs....it never gets old! similar to great bands like PHISH, the samples, GSW is a great jam band!

The best album they've made to date.......1998-12-28

If I were to make a list of my favorite GSW songs, it would include every song fom BAG. I could put this on repeat and listen to it until my stereo dies!! I highly recommend Bag for any GSW fan old or new.

The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

....for something very different. This would have been a classic if the music market was not so overloaded. A hidden Jewel with fresh ideas on how to present music. For the experienced .... not for rookies.

Pretty Good But Not Really,.......2003-11-03

I am a big GSW fan I saw them ever time they came to Chicago. This album will go down as not being the best album, but it is not the worst album that they could have done. This is probably their most commercial album. I think the main place where I find fault is with the production value. Some of these some are just over produced and it kills the album to a degree. This is true with songs like "Untitled Take Two" or "Don't Tell God". Yet the one place where i cannot fault them is song writing. Despite the lack luster album GSW still comes up with some fun songs that are worthwhile. They include "Red and Milky White" and "Which Way Will She Go". Now I know these songs are not in the same league with "Stranger," "Goodnight Gretchen, "Molly" or even "Goodbye Oklahoma." Yet on the whole this album could have been a lot worse. Yet I will always thing well of this album. What good songs there are enough for me to keep listening to this album.

WE MISS YOU GSW!.......2000-03-11

This CD is filled with well thought out musical ideas and creativity that can only be explored in the studio. This work should not be compared to a live show. The band has graciously supplied us with live CDs as well as the opportunity to record their (sadly missed) shows.

You've gotta love the crispy sounding "Red and Milky White," as well as "RU4 Real," which shines with the energy of early GSW at their best. "Chop!" and "Get on the Train" peak with some steam too. If you're on a liquid journey, "Which Way Will She Go?" is a refreshing enhancement. As long as you're not expecting a live show, prepare yourself for a feast...This work is an excellent lesson for all Jam Bands, ya gotta have good tunes to set up the rippin' jams.

A brilliant ALBUM.......2000-03-08

The complaints mentioned above are the standard (unfounded) putdowns directed towards this album. I too am a strong fan of their live performances, but it is wrong to compare this album to the live setting.

Red was written and recorded during a tumultuous period of the bands existence. They had just recently extracted themselves from a bum deal with the Geffen record label and were extremely frustrated with the music industry as a whole. So what did they do next? They made this album, in their own home, without a label contract. They had complete freedom in the creation of this album, entirely void of industry pressure. It was released indendently for a few months before Mercury Records signed the band and began to distribute it. Red contains brilliant, vivid, and painful songwriting. The effects used on this album reinforce the frustrations. The fact that these effects are difficult to reproduce live is part of the reason why some fans hate this album. Yet still, some fun concert staples are found on the album such as Get on the Train and Chop! If you want a live performance, listen to a concert recording, they are freely traded among fans. If you want a brilliant, uncompromised album from my favorite live band, check out Red.

not their best stuff.......1999-01-23

First I need to say that I am a big gsw fan. I must say however that this album just doesnt do it for me. If you're one of those people who will buy a cd because of one song, then "ru4real?" might be enough cause to buy this one. It was for me. The rest of the album was a bit of a let down, but I must stress that this album (nor it's reviews) should stop you from buying any other gsw albums. "bag" and "god street wine" are both absolutely fantastic.

Still searching for the breakthrough album to catch national attention, God Street Wine's self-titled fifth album is more than worth some noteriety. With a tight mature sound not evident on past recordings, GSW takes a clear step forward musically. The songs are diverse, yet focused, with a sense of urgency and passion. A guest appearence by John Popper of Blues Traveler only adds more spice to the album and does not take away from the band's signiture sound. An "A" effort for a band that deserves to be heard.

Not quite as good as "RED".......1999-01-09

This self-titled release is the fifth album from blues/rock quintet God Street Wine. These twelve tracks lack the catchy, likable feel that was present on their '96 release Red, but are still a worth-while effort. "Diana" is definately the records best track. "Feather", "Angeline' and "Happy Birthday, Mr. President'are also quite good. John Popper of Blues Traveler adds guest harmonica to a couple of tracks.
