    5 out of 5 stars Dreamy Moods.......2007-01-26

I just can't get you out of my head
Boy, your love is all I think about
I just can't get you out of my head
Boy, it's more than I dare to think about
    ~Kylie Minogue

I will admit that some of the artist on this album gave original songs new life. It is rare to love every song in a soundtrack and in this, the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Bridget Jones The Edge of Reason, excels.

Each song seems to have been selected to create a dreamy mood and even when a few more energetic songs like the breathlessly sexy "Can't Get You Out of My Head," "I Believe in A Thing Called Love" or Sting's "We'll Be Together" break through the evening mood, the volume is still at a level where it fits into the mood of all the selections and gives this CD a satisfying variety. In fact, after listening to this the first time, the songs all seemed different on a second listen. This Soundtrack is perfect for times when you want to relax, write in your own diary/journal or just sink into dreams of love.

True romantics will enjoy everything from the delicate "Lovin' You" to the jazzy "Everlasting Love" (U2 Classic). Many of the songs seem to have been newly recorded and so even if you have all these songs, the new variation is musically enchanting. Bernie Taupin's lyrics and Mary J. Blige's voice in "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word" seem to be made for each other. I also enjoyed Will Young's cover of "Your Love Is King." Originally by Sade Adu. Jamelia's smooth and sultry cover of Stop! (Sam Brown) is inspirational and made me want to go out and buy the original album.

One of the best soundtracks I've found this year because the mood is dreamy and all the lyrics are meaningful.

For a true Bridget Jones experience: ISBN: 0788748459. The performance by Barbara Rosenblat is spectacular. Barbara Rosenblat is an accomplished actor and singer and is a sought-after narrator. She was born in London and cleverly captures Bridget's moments of nostalgia, her excitement for life and her beautiful hopeful attitudes.

4 out of 5 stars A quality album all the way through.......2005-02-05

Most fans will disagree, but I actually like this album better than "Mood Swings". The modern approach works well on this album. This was a good recording for 1995 and 10 years later it still stands up.

4 out of 5 stars Gloomier But Beautiful.......2003-05-10

Canadian AOR master's third album in 1995 shows their modern rock approach. It became a bit gloomier than "Mood Swings" unmistakable AOR masterpiece in 1993. So much so but it is excellently done as you can find in "Breathing Sand","Blue". If you like modern alternative rock such as REM, Lifehouse and Goo Goo Dolls this album may be a good starting point. If you are a classic 80's hits appreciator, I strongly recommend their 1st, 2nd(Mood Swings) or the latest"Weight Of The World".

4 out of 5 stars quality through and through.......2001-08-03

Harem Scarem's third album is a big departure from the straight-forward melodic rock of their first two releases, though it is a very good album in its own right. The trademark harmonies and crunching guitars remain in place, but the songs and lyrics have a darker, more alternative feel. "Breathing Sand" is the closest they come to their classic "Mood Swings" sound. This album takes repeated listenings to fully appreciate its many merits, though from the first listen there is no questioning the musicianship or the top-notch production.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and beautiful..........1999-03-01

Man, I was blown away by the wah-wah work on the album... The lyrics were so dark and beautiful, especially the track "Breathing Sand".Now let me tell you something, if you're a wah-wah freak, YOU NEED THIS ALBUM!

    5 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING..........1998-07-24

Are you the type of guy who goes for melodic hard rock? These Canadian guys have a lot to offer that most hard rock bands don't have. Be it beautiful vocal arrangements, guitar parts that sound cooler than you do, and balls-to-the-wall hard rock where they never lose their heads, this is the band to beat. For me, this is my best Harem Scarem album. And these guys definitely deserve more credit!!!

The Second Studio Album from Shaman (From Former Angra Members Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti Und Ricardo Confessori). This is Excellent Hard Rock Influenced Metal with a Unique Mix of Progressive and South American Folk Elements.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Unexpected Direction.......2006-03-17

If Andre Matos and the rest of Shaman's goal was to distance themselves from the Angra sound for which they are best known, then they certainly accomplished it with Reason. Shaman's excellent debut album, Ritual, was very much an Angra-style power metal album, so I thought I knew what to expect from Reason. Instead, the band has taken its sound in a totally new direction.

Reason is definitely not the power metal we're used to. It's still quite heavy at times, but it tends more towards a melodic rock sound. And I'm not talking about Journey-inspired, Frontiers Records melodic rock either. Yes, keyboards are prevalent, but this isn't a big hooks and catchy chorus kind of album. Call it a "serious" hard rock album with an obvious appreciation for melody. It reminds me at times of some of Threshold and Vanishing Point's less metallic moments. The band's inclusion of South American musical elements is, as always, a nice touch that helps set them apart from the crowd.

I have mixed emotions about this album. On the one hand, it's good to see the band challenge themselves and defy expectations, and it's hard to argue with the results - this is a very impressive album. On the other hand, knowing that the band is capable of recording a top notch power metal album yet chooses not to do so is frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars this is just... amazing! .......2005-10-08

In American music, there's maybe 2 great songs per album. Even in European metal, not every song is good on every album (there's some exceptions). Shaman's Reason has 10 songs. 10 of them are amazing.

I'm not what you would call a "fan" of Shaman (or Angra), but I listen to both and enjoy both. So I'm not gonna go into massive amounts of detail.

What I will say is that I enjoyed the overall feeling of "melodic metal influenced by gothic rock." To me, that's what this sounds like. So if you enjoy bands like Sentenced or Katatonia, you'll enjoy this - even though the instruments don't follow the gothic style. The music is more hard-rockish with lots of keyboard intros to enhance the emotions the listener will feel.

There's several sad piano sounds, especially in the 3 "ballads" - Innocence, Rough Stone, and Born to Be. These 3 and the 80's cover song "More" are some of my favorites. Its kind of a funny album; sometimes, the ballads will act as your favorite songs, but at other times, you're gonna crave to listen to the faster Trail of Tears (another of my favorites).

For anyone who's a Highlord, Dark Moor, or Rhapsody fan, you're not gonna hear tons of orchestral arrangements or super fast songs on here. This album is more so where gothic rock meets melodic metal.

Though most of the songs are around the same speed and the same emotions, you still won't get bored. Think of Heavenly's Dust to Dust album, if you will. For some reason, these 2 albums just do a better job of holding the listener's attention.

Even for fans of classic rock, alternative rock, etc. - this would be a GREAT starting point for people wanting to listen to European metal. Soilwork, In Flames, Mnemic - the screaming/growling/grunting can easily turn people off.

Bottom line - make an effort to listen to and enjoy this album. It's a lot different than most of what's out there. Try downloading samples someplace if you're the picky kind. This is one album that'll always have to come with me on my one-week vacations. (I have over 400 CDs - most of which are European metal. See my other reviews to get a sense of who I listen to.)

3 out of 5 stars Voice Of Experimentation.......2003-08-12

Voice Of Reason marked the end of an era for Harem Scarem. It's the last album by the original lineup before Mike Gionet departed, and the band got huge overseas.

On this, the Japanese import version of their third full-length CD, you get one bonus track: Candle, an acoustic version. So far it hasn't turned up on any compilations that I'm aware of, and it's actually superior to the regular album version. Very cool bonus track.

What about the rest of the album? Harem Scarem took their progression shown on Mood Swings and took it up a notch. More vocal harmonies, more guitar layers and flourishes, more complex song structures. In fact I've always felt that Voice Of Reason was a step closer to Queen. That's a good thing. I've also found it quite similar to some of the music that Extreme was doing on their III Sides album.

That's the good news. The bad news is that it's really not as memorable as anything those two bands have done, or even Harem Scarem's own past work. The songs are all decent, but very few rise above or stand out. The title track, Warming A Frozen Rose (best song), Blue, and I'll Be Brief among others really stand out. But, comparing that to a past record like Mood Swings where virtually every track was a winner, Voice Of Reason falls slightly short of the mark.

3 out of 5 stars This rock ballad has seriously been overplayed.......2004-08-28

Hoobastank's "The Reason"---the only song of theirs I've yet heard---is really a touching rock ballad. I honestly loved it the first time I heard it (via catching a glimpse of its music video on MTV)---I had never heard something sound so passionate. It snuck right past my macho defenses and pierced me emotionally.

At least, that was what happened the first time I heard the song. But then I heard it over and over and over again secondhand on, particularly, Z100 (New York's so-called "No. 1 hit music station"). And a funny though perhaps inevitable thing happened: I got real sick of this song. Whenever it popped up on the radio, instead of being moved all over again, I was irritated more and more by its diffuse rock sound. Did the members of Hoobastank really have to lay on the guitars in such a manner? Something more intimate-sounding would really have been more appropriate, maybe even more profound, instead of this mushy bombast. Now, I've pretty much lost all interest in listening to more Hoobastank.

I have a feeling this wouldn't be the first time a Top 40 radio station has killed the effect of a song by playing it over and over again. And yet, perhaps this reaction is merely a statement about the song itself. A great song would arguably be more effective upon repeated hearings. (I find this very true for Coldplay.) Hoobastank's "The Reason," for me, is not. Therefore, despite my initial favorable reaction to it, this is, simply put, not a great song. Its overblown sentimentality, while impressive the first time, gets old and even nauseating rather quickly. Perhaps the full album, also called THE REASON, from which this song is culled is a greater achievement overall. If you are interested in exploring more Hoobastank, I would recommend purchasing the album instead of this CD single, which may or may not represent the band at its best. I would like to think that it doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars This song rocks for real!.......2004-08-10

I was not a fan of Hoobastank or even of the genre, but I heard 'The Reason' one day, and it was like an epiphany of some sort. I mean I didn't just hear the music, but felt it, and the lyrics are so on-point. This joint is so hot right now!!! I am loving it!

Hoobastank, you have a new fan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why this CD rocks.......2004-07-19

This cd is awsome because reason is its hit song. Of course the reason is an awsome song. An awsome song can make people buy the whole cd and listen to that one song. So the record company that owns hoobastank is going to be rolling in the doe!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars worth the cost!.......2003-03-10

Brilliant single and worth it for Winter Haven High alone. Don't know how that got left off the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Two Essential Tracks for Roddy Frame Fans.......2001-08-15

The two new, mellow tracks on this disc are right at home with my North Star favorites "Hymn to Grace" and "Autumn Flower".

"Rainy Greys and Blues" wraps Roddy's amazing lyrics around a beautifully simple core of bass, piano, and cymbal. If you like pieces like "Song for a Friend" or "Mattress of Wire", you need this single more than you need oxygen.

"Winter Haven High" has a bit more vocal intensity and complex instrumentation. Once again, anyone else would sound like they were just showing off their poetic prowess with lyrics like these. Combined with Roddy's moving performance, though, they only help make a song in which you notice something new each time you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Another release from Aztec Camera's mastermind.......2000-09-09

This single only adds fuel to the fiery hollering of "Where's a B-sides collection, Roddy?" As with most of Aztec Camera's singles output, the flipsides are more interesting and emotional than the A-side. Winter Haven High is a touching, yearning ballad of unity and strength. Rainy Greys and Blues is a low-keyed song of devotion, quite possibly one of Roddy's best set of lyrics since the first album. At the chorus he sings, "I wish I could be you/and you could walk a while in my shoes/the love you've given me would free you/and wash away those rainy greys and blues."

Just two beautiful songs that any Aztec Camera/Roddy Frame fan won't want to miss.
