The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

"Yikes" is the first word that comes to mind when I try to describe this album. It's not an entirely bad thing to say, but it's certainly not good. To be honest, I must've been living in a hole because I didn't realize Avril had a new album out until a few weeks ago when I saw The Best Damn Thing used in a local cd store. I bought it based on her previous two releases, Let Go and Under My Skin, both of which I enjoyed. Imagine my distaste when I heard "Girlfriend" upon putting the cd into my stereo. I had heard parts of that song before. The parts where I couldn't get to the radio fast enough to change the station, that is. I didn't realize until that moment that it was Avril Lavigne. I forced myself to listen to the entire song, which reminded me so much of the horror that has become Gwen Stefani. The Best Damn Thing certainly seems like a huge step backwards for Avril. Let Go was a decent debut album. Under My Skin was a worthy follow up that showed that she was maturing as a songwriter and artist. I was relieved to discover that Avril decided to purposely create a frivolous album that was meant to be fun. So let her have her fun. I just hope that the next album puts her back on her previous track. There are a few good tracks on the album. "Keep Holding On" is one song that do enjoy. But in the meantime, I can't see myself listening to 3/4ths of this album without wincing.

What an awesome CD! Avril at her best. I like everysong, except when your gone. but I don't get it. People keep trashing this CD. Ok this is kinda like a Christina Aguilera thing. Christina got married, and made a double album of happy songs, shes happy now. and thats my first thought with Avril, she got married, she is happy now,a nd her and her husband worked together on this album. So it's more poppy and fun than her last 2 albums. It's like if Madonna made everyone of her albums with the same sound. it would get boring. thats why artist try new things, and Avril made a great album, still punk rockish and a bit poppy. I like it. now the standard version is clean, but the deluxe version with the dvd is not, but the first 2 tracks are the only ones with language. over all a fun and great album. a new side of avril. enjoy it!

From alternative to bubble gum in one move. I'm so glad I listened to this before I bought it, and recommend you do the same. She is a great artist, but this CD is awful. If you are very young, you may get a kick out of it. If you are a grown-up, buy her other ones instead.

I bought this CD for "Girlfriend" and ended up loving the whole thing. I especially enjoy "When your gone." My boyfriend is in Iraq being brave and fighting in the war for his third time and this is the hardest one. This song comforts me and I am so happy that I bought the cd and found this song. 5 starts definatly. Go AVRIL!

Last month I had the opportunity to hear BACK TO BLACK by Amy Winehouse courtesy of a co-worker of mine. Normally my musical preferences is at the opposite end of the spectrum (darker and more aggressive) but in Amy's case I loved what I heard. I finally got a hold of my own copy of BACK TO BLACK. I have been listening to the cd non-stop. I really don't care for r&b music. Today's r&b is slickly overproduced. Amy's music has a vintage Motown influence with a splash of jazz thrown in to the mix. The production is gritty like a lot of old school r&b/soul music were back in the day. I like how unique Amy's vocals are. They have a slighty whiney, raspy edge but without being annoying. I think the standout track on the entire album is the hilarious "Rehab". Gotta love the lyrics. Another great track is "You Know I'm No Good". For some odd reason the song sounded like it would have been great for the great Shirley Bassey to sing. Not wild about the rap on the remixed version of the song. I wished the album wasn't so short but on the other hand it left me very eager to hear more from Amy.

I have to admit, I discovered Amy Winehouse during a lunchtime visit to [...] and he's right...she's fantastic. What a great CD. Nostalgic and new at the same time. LOVE IT. I bought the "clean version" of her album, 'cause I have a child...though I don't know how "clean" it really is. Even "clean" the CD is totally amazing. I'm not crazy about the remix of "You Know I'm No Good" ...it just doesn't need the rap, but the rest of the songs are all good. It's unique, but familiar at the same time. Kind of a trashy, Spectorized-girl-group sound. Bloodshot-blue-eyed-soul, if you will. I love her voice. If I was rich, I'd buy it for all my friends.

Fantastic album. As I said in my review title, this is a rare gem in a sea of crappy copycats and sound-alikes; in a world where everyone is trying to release a sound that sounds like everyone else sounds (does that make sense?), Amy Winehouse releases a throw-back to better musical days.

This album is a confirmation of the fact that good music will never die, even if dead music continues to live. The smooth R&B/blues/soul/jazz sounds are Mo-town all over again. And I am thrilled.

I am a musical purist and I don't care for much of what is released these days, but this album is a wonderful exploration of the old sounds with an updated groove and a funky edge.

Every song is at least good. In my humble opinion, the standouts are "Rehab", "You know I'm No Good", "Back to Black", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "Some Unholy War", and "He Can Only Hold Her".

To carry that one step further, I would point to true, amazing standouts as "ME & MR. JONES", a slow groove with motown like backing vocals and thick leading vocals from Amy. A true treat for the ears.
Also, "JUST FRIENDS". This has to be the BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. A smooth, rasta-infused jazzy upbeat tune, slow and easy. This gal is amazing.

Man, can you say Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday, Etta James? This lady has a beautiful future if she sticks with what got her to this point. Her vocals are purely classic, thick and textured like few others can. She has placed herself at the pinnacle of musical history, not just modern music.

Simply stated, this album is sardonic, muddled, ironic, melancholy rantings of an alcoholic (recovering or admitted, I'm not sure) siren.

A must have for any pure music lover.

I am very picky about music, sticking mostly to classics (classical, classic rock, mo-town, big-band, swing, blues or jazz) but this album breaks through the monotony of the typical crap of today and shines brightly.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, THIS SHOULD BE ALBUM OF THE YEAR AT THE GRAMMY'S. WON'T SURPRISE ME IF SHE'S OVERLOOKED BY THE SHEEP, BUT SHE DESERVES IT 100%.

THIS REVIEW DEALS ONLY WITH THE EDITING OF CURSE WORDS FOR THE CLEAN ALBUM.

I bought the clean version of this album because she uses the "f" word in several songs on the other version and I have young children. The edited version is a disappointment. The curse words are clumsily half-blotted out, leaving an awkward space in the songs, while the phrase, "You don't mean [...] to me" remains untouched. I will still have to press the skip button, which negates the whole point of buying a clean version! If the Black Eyed Peas and Jay-Z can come up with alternate lyrics for some of their edited songs, then certainly Amy Winehouse's handlers could have done the same.

People, if you haven't bought this album yet, go buy it today. There is a reason that people love this woman. Yes, she is unapologetically blunt (when it comes to sex, drugs and everything in between), yes, she dabbles with drugs in real life, and yes, her sound is authentic and DAMN good. I think I'm in love with that voice. I'll tell you why.....

Amy's voice is at once sexy, sensuous, expressive and seductive, and her band is seamless (great horn and percussive section!). What's more, her lyrics are fantastic and unabashedly honest (at times lewd, yes, and allude to her addiction to blow AKA cocaine). She is probably best known for "ReHab," "You Know I'm No Good" and "Back to Black." I feel like I am back in 1960, listening to soul, and then the expletives come pouring out....but, smooth as silk. You can't blame the girl for being angry. I don't know if Amy has just had some tough luck with men, or whether they just take delight in treating her like trash. At any rate, this woman totally channels the rush of emotions that comes with broken relationships, as well as the rush of drug addiction. If you want to hear a good example of the broken-ness, I reccomend "Me & Mr. Jones." (or most of the other tracks!)

This woman is amazing. I just hope (and I say this with sincerity), that she doesn't overdose before her remarkable career truly fluorishes worldwide. Note: As I said before, this album is explicit and has references to sex and drugs (quite graphic sex, at times). Still, this is one of the best soul albums I have heard. She puts Christina Aguilera and all of those wannabees to shame......Praise the lord, soul has returned!

The good old days.......2007-05-20

Yeah I remember when this alblum first came out. I was about 13 in the 7th Grade. I remember "Blurry" that was alomst my faveorite song. It really related to my dramatic life in school and at home growing up. And it really does still relate to me to this day. Well im 19 now and in college. As I got older I have opended myself up to other stuff like death metal, black metal, alot of underground stuff, and so on. But I never forgot about my childhood days when "Blurry" was my favorite song. I never got sick of it! Among alot of the other stuff I listened to back in those days! Some things just never change.

So much dumping on this band! "Blah! Blah! Blah! They rip off Nirvana!" Whatever! What band doesnt these days huh? Dont get me wrong I like Nirvana and all the Seattle grunge scene bands. But something being an exact rip off doesnt make it a bad thing! If some thing is and EXACT rip off then it is pretty much every bit as good!

So if you are just some narrow-minded, 40 year old loser, high school dropout, all caught up in the 70's or the 80's and is afraid of anything new, and practically worships the Rolling Stones then this kind of music definitely isnt for you!

Bought it for the hits (which I did against my better judgement), but the album as a whole lacks substance. I can't listen to bands who cannot put a complete album together. Not every song should be a hit, but there must be some kind of cohesion.

Having said that, the popular tunes are great.

Puddle of Mudd - My New Favorite Album.......2006-08-31

If you like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman, you are in for a treat. This group rocks! Where Nickelback's Chad punches out his lines (most excellent), Puddle of Mudd is very melodious and has a great all-round sound going. This album is absolutely their best work to date and I am excited to hear some new tunes from this awesome band. Keep 'em coming! :)

Silver Side Up? Naw, I'd give 'em Gold. .......2006-08-01

When the CD first came out in 2002, I started hearing them on the radio and on the College Television Network at school. After a short time I was really diggin' their music. I soon bought the album "Silver Side Up". Two songs that especially stood out to me was "Drift and Die", and "Blurry." I haven't heard much of their stuff since then, but as of now, this is my favorite with Puddle of Mudd.

Okay, so when I first heard 'Control' I just passed 'Puddle of Mudd' off as another 'Nirvana' rip-off...another band that couldn't find their own sound so they decided to 'be' like someone else, but I was so wrong. While not brilliant, 'Come Clean' really shows a lot of promise in it's track listing. The follow-up single is the blunt 'She Hates Me' where lead singer Wesley bashes his ex with some colorful words. The next single, the heartfelt 'Blurry', is another gem and also another look at what this band can deliver. From radio friendly tracks like the aformentioned 'Control' to ballads like 'Blurry' and fun-foul tracks like 'She Hates Me'. Add in some great stripped acustic tracks like 'Drift & Die' and the closer 'Piss it all Away' as well as the fan favorite 'Nobody Told Me' and the emotional 'Basement' and you have a winning effort by a not so average band.

Funny but way too short.......2007-02-24

Schimmel is a very funny comedian, but I have to give this 3 stars simply because it's entirely too short. Just when you're really getting into it, it's over. Now I have to buy his other CDs to get what most comedians give you on one CD.

I'm not a big fan of comedy CD's, but Robert Schimmel is fantastic. I actually got this as a copy from a friend, and I ended up buying it - it's that good! I won't lie - I literally cried beacuse I was laughing so hard. My face hurt from laughing, and my side ached. He is disgusting, and perverted, and raw - but, oh so truthful. He comments on the most mudane things in life, but brings out the humor in them. If you want to laugh like there's no tomorrow - buy this CD.

If you are curious about this band, you will surely see, and come to realize, that your curiosity was well warranted. This is a cournucopia of a band that makes you all warm. No matter what. Makes you happy and warm. That's really about it.

So very very Clean.......2005-03-21

The Clean is a powerful but nebulous presence in the world of indie rock -- the New Zealand band is known to music critics and die-hard indie fans, but sadly not to the masses. The fact that they are still little-known after two and a half decades is just proof that fame doesn't always come to those who deserve it.

The simply-named two-disc "Anthology" gives a suitably good retrospective of the Clean's career, in pretty much chronological order. One disc is devoted to their early work: the fun organ-laced garage-rock "Tally Ho," which was the song that propelled them to New Zealand's musical top, as well as the rough "Billy Two."

The rough, lo-fi pop continues changing in the second, which has the later music and some rarities. Starting with the Clean's reunion, it has such excellent (and eclectic) styles as jangly guitar rock, keyboard pop, and the Britpoppish flavors of "Secret Place" and "Diamond Shine." Surprisingly, the smoother production doesn't at all take away from the enjoyment of the music.

It's a pity that bands from New Zealand don't get the recognition that British or American bands do. If they did, the Clean would probably adored with Pavement and Radiohead. Sadly, they have not gotten that recognition, but that in no way reflects on their music -- this edgy, quirky rock is similar to the best of today's top indierock bands, but conceived years before those bands existed.

"Anthology" serves more than one function. It's two hours of fun, gloriously inventive rock'n'roll, but it also serves to illustrate how their sound expanded over time. The Clean started off with very little, which gave their music a fun, rough sound, but with new production and more money, they polished their sound up. Their music lost the innocent edge, in favor of musical maturity.

The songwriting is more than a little insane -- not that that's a bad thing. The Clean's music has a lovably unhinged edge, lovably jagged instrumentation and edgy sensibilities. There isn't a musical dull moment, with leader David Kilgour and his brother Hamish playing, respectively, guitar and drums. Bassist Robert Scott (later of the Bats) rounded off the group.

The Clean is practically guaranteed to capture an indie-rock-lover's heart, since it was an influence on bands like Yo La Tengo, Pavement and Sonic Youth. As a good overview of the band's two-decade-plus career, "Anthology" is good Clean fun.

The Cleans best work.......2005-03-03

The Clean kick-started the illustrious New Zealand label Flying Nun in 1981, providing a key blueprint for indie-rockers from Australia (the Chills) to California (Pavement). Over this two-disc, 46-track set of rarities and essentials, the trio takes the chugga-chugga racket of the Velvet Underground and stretches it into an entire garage aesthetic of excited, rudimentary playing, shaky, Kiwi-accented vocals and endearing melodies. Disc one, as influential for the lo-fi sonics as for the songs, ends with the Clean's 1983 breakup. Disc two spans their 1988 reunion and 1996's Unknown Country, mining similar material with even more exciting (and even better-sounding) results. But by then, lots of bands were doing what the mighty Clean had helped pioneer.

Jangly guitar pop that adeptly crosses the (often) very broad line between Punk and Psychedelia. A few misfires, sure, but such is evolution. Well worth the ducats.

thank goodness for merge, the label who has given this legendary new zealand post-punk/spacy twee pop group a well-deserved wider audience. so far this year my most valuable musical discovery. this 2-disc collection is essential, 46 songs, all of them delightful and effervescent, for 13 bucks. simply unbeatable.

kudos to the clean for being the band that kickstarted my favorite musical genre of last year, kiwi-pop (chills, bats, verlaines, straitjacket fits, etc...these are good places to turn if you like what you hear with the clean).

"Clean," a CD by Shane and Shane about grace is a perfect CD to get in conjunction with "Upstairs." With great songs such as "Saved by Grace," "Fringes," "Yearn," and "There is None Like You/Your Grace Is Sufficient For Me," the Shanes have a gift of blending flawless harmonies into folksy songs that make you want to close your eyes and breathe it all in. The Shanes excel in simple yet poignant lyrics that Shane Barnard delivers in a breathy angelic kind of way. It's hard to compare them to anybody else because as they are one of a kind. Now there might be complaints that the CD has 3 cover songs on it and that "Yearn" was on the Upstairs CD, but Shane and Shane seem to give a song a different approach everytime they sing it. I do recommend buying this album on grassrootsmusic.com (sorry Amazon!) as it is currently $12.74 and Upstairs is only $7.99.

The only thing I'd like to add to the well-deserved accolades is that their voices are smooth, like BUTTAH!! "Clean" is not only a title, it's a description - at one point I had this cd playing for one week straight. It's a truly unbelievable gift. Thanks, guys.

"Clean" is far and away the best Christian CD I've bought in the last year. It is pure and simple praise... so many of the lyrics are directly from the Bible. It's awesome to be able to put in a CD to study or drive and just relax in the Lord. "Clean" is a audio manifestation of the Lord's peace. Definitely worth the money- Shane and Shane have found their annointing!!

A great band COULD be in the making.......2005-06-18

I almost never listen to "worship" music because I find the lyrics mind-numbingly dull and repetitive. Perhaps singing "He is worthy" over and over is wonderful to God's ears..I won't presume to answer that..but to MY ears it's just lazy songwriting.

What Shane (Bernard) and Shane (Everett) have going for them is lyrics that are INSPIRED by the Bible...but not mere verbatim passages set to music. The Bible is PROSE...not song lyrics..and this duo understands that what reads well doesn't always SING well. At least they USUALLY do..there are a couple examples of really bad lyrics here which keeps me from giving an unqualified recommendation.

The sound musically is mostly acoustic pop with occasional left turns into harder edged rock and some interesting instrumentation for flavour. (Wurlitzer, vibes, melodica, and "Dewalt", whatever that is) The pair's breathy voices blend well on the choruses.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"God Did" is a paean to grace and a sly attack on the legalistic approach to Christian living as Bernard notes in the last verse "Maybe do's and don'ts were made to show/How much we do and don't ever make it". "He is Exalted" is simplistic lyrically but a nice update of a Twila Paris 80s megahit song. (One of her better tunes pre CRY FOR THE DESERT). "Waging War" finds the group longing for a day when following God isn't a struggle, when "what was once a pearl now sand/blows away in light of Him". "Make Believe Jesus" is not the indictment of Christianity the title might seem to indicate..rather it's a call for Jesus to make himself as apparent to non-believers as He is to the natural elements He commands. (Inspiration comes from Job 37:12) "You and I" is a jubilant declaration of Jesus' grace ("Come with what you do not have/And buy what's undeserved") over a backdrop with guitars that soar through the stratosphere. "Yearn" is an honest, simple heartcry for a more passionate encounter with God. "Acres of Hope" uses the imagery of God as suitor..seeking the love of those He created. ("How the story ends is/Love and tenderness in Him/Not safe, but worth it..") A pair of praise choruses, unassumingly produced, close out the CD. It feels utterly appropriate.

LOWS:
"Saved by Grace" is a GUILTY pleasure by virtue of its catchiness, but I can't let the bad lyric go without commenting. The hook is "By grace you have been saved (X3)/By grace you have been saved through faith/Through faith". That's it. B-A-D.

BOTTOM LINE:
Much better than most of what gets Christian radio airplay in terms of lyrical depth and nicely textured to boot. If they can get rid of the low spots next time out, they have a chance to make a classic. As it is, this is still very good.

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals--a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans"--you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is. Boring bar music.......2007-04-12

I bought the CD because I was looking for piano music and this one was highly recommended by reviewers. Well, it sure is one boring piece of work! I somehow missed reference on the music style. So, to you all who may be doing the same mistake: it is a blues music for bars. Go out Friday night and you'll have a great chance to hear the same music: the never-ending stream of notes to make you feel unworried and thirsty. Nothing great nor "legendary" about it really. It has something specifically American about it that I find difficult to relate to: too common, too simple, too simpleminded, too shortcoming. Sorry, but using piano for instrument doesn't make the music great; the melodies could have been played on harmonica or accordion instead and sold as folk-music.

Somewhere in the mid-eighties Dr John released plays Mac Rebennack. Where a lot of the good doctor's studio work was at times plagued by mediocrity that release was suddenly a more than solid effort. Mac Rebennack is of course the Night Tripper himself, doctor John was suddenly playing out of his "own" songbook, although a lot of the compositions here are actually originated from some one else's pen. Plays Mac Rebennack gives you the good Doctor at his most pure, just the man and his rolling and funky piano, his rough and gruff voice and a great assortment of songs and instrumentals. The original release focussed on instrumental work, the vol. 2 companion of the re-release with outtakes from the original sessions focuses more on vocal outings of Dr. John from that time.

Plays Mac Rebennack was a highly intimate late night album; the outtake sessions featured here in vol. 2 are much in the same vein. This is not a bad thing at all, listening to this album one can only conclude that the Doctor is much more powerful and compelling when playing all by his lonesome. The album features a lot of different shades, from uninhibited joy to dark melancholy. With tracks like Marie La Veau some of the Night Trippers mystic creep into this album, Boxcar Boogie is a bar room brawl, Touro Infirmary is a strong adaptation of the familiar st. James, Come Rain or Shine is spine chilling.

Every single selection here is played in the Doctor's signature style, highly indebted to Professor Longhair yet very recognisable as Mac Rebennack. Doctor John has long been one of the most eccentric individuals in Rhythm and Blues; Plays Mac Rebennack shows us he's a master. There's not a note to many, during the record he plays his strengths en weaknesses very well. This release and the re-release of the original album were long overdue.

This CD features really good blues piano. Sometimes soft and quiet and at other times quite strident. For me,this is really the way the piano should be in this genre. Dr John's vocals (not on all tracks) adds to the authenticity.

A great way to revisit classic Dr. John. Remastered for amazing sound with a TON of bonus tracks...this is a fantastic album for any Dr. John fan or someone looking to get into his stuff. Definitely pick it up!

WHY COMPARE?.......2006-02-21

Oh God, I can't stand anymore comparisons between Curve and Garbage...Look, Garbage are one of my favourite bands, but their sound has so little to share with Curve's one and not only because Garbage are more commercial or easy listening, actually they are more different than you can think at a first listening. This 1996's album is marking a change in Curve sound, infact is very different from the three earlier albums PUBIC FRUIT DOPPELGANGER and CUCKOO, and probably if you are a Garbage listener, you will find that COME CLEAN is quite similar to Garbage sound.
Now think that when this CD was first published in 1996, the first Garbage album was just issued too. I don't think that they have so influenced each other as someone can think or that Garbage took some inspiration from less commercial Curve. If you already have some Curve album buy this because is very original and different from the others. If you don't have one, buy it because can be right to approach to Curve music, you will find a unimaginable music dimension.

I just recently purchased COME CLEAN. Let me tell you I was blown away. I am a huge Garbage fan and I have to say that I am more in love with COME CLEAN than I am with Garbage's latest album--Bleed Like Me. I see it has being a lot like Garbage's Version 2.0 in a way. I completely fell in love with Curve once I heard this album and now I am purchasing another Curve album. I already own Gift and I have always liked that album. But Come Clean completely blew my mind and got me addicted to Curve.

A little darker, a little edgier.......2005-07-18

"Gift" is one of my favorite albums of 2001, so it would make sense if I start checking out the band's earlier albums. I already own "Cuckoo" since the early '90s. Now while "Come Clean" is good in its own right but it doesn't fare as well as "Gift" or especially on the band's now classic "Doppelganger" which is probably the band's most melodic album I have heard. There is a darker edge to "Come Clean" that the listener hadn't heard on "Cuckoo". The songs are more techno-ish, with elements of industrial beats in between. Toni Halliday sounds wonderful of course. She could never sound bad. "Come Clean" sounds like it would be the ideal soundtrack for a futuristic thriller. "Chinese Burn" has that razor edge sound that just rips through the stereo system. If it wasn't for bands like Curve, I seriously doubt that there would be a Garbage. For me, Curve is one of the first bands to have combined techno and rock. "Come Clean" is a great album by Curve. The songs may have taken me awhile to grow on me and lack the pop sensibility of their earlier work, I still think "Come Clean" is a vastly overlooked album and Curve is definitely a vastly overlooked band from the early '90s.

classic and totally underrated.......2005-03-09

who are curve? who does this awesome song you're playing in your car? my friends always ask me that. this badn isn't well known in the US, but they are truly gifted and produce meaningful, hard hitting, groovy, beat-laden songs. toni (the singer) has a beautiful voice and the beats and guitars are well taken care of. imho this band is so much better than other bands people compare them to, like garbage, which are... well their name says it all. check this cd out, you won't be disappointed.

Curve's late 90's masterpiece.......2003-11-26

"Gift" is the album that hooked me onto Curve, but it was the Lunatic Calm remix of "Chinese Burn" that shined the light on them for me. I was curious about this band that one of my all time favorite electronic artists had remixed a song from, so I searched for the original track and found it here on "Come Clean". I couldn't find it in stores, so while I waited for it to be delivered, I picked up "Gift" and really liked what I heard. Then "Come Clean" came in.

Although my first listen didn't captivate me, through repeated use, this has come to be one of my favorite CDs of all time! A beautiful yet sinister blend of rock, techno, and gothic hues, Curve's 1998 album picks you up and shakes you until the last track ends. Its a wild ride in some places, but in others it sits you down and seduces you with relaxed vocals and sounds. Then it gets right back up and throws you around again.

Each track is beautifully written and mixed. They all sound different from each other while maintaining a sense of identity. Its awsome.

In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch.

Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley

Apocalypse Here and Now.......2005-08-07

I, too, like the other reviewers, had the original soundtrack recording (on 2 cassettes!) I enjoyed listening to it in the dark of my New York City apartment to re-experience the film and to also learn the dialogue.

However, when the Redux version came out on DVD, I also was looking forward to a newer re-issue of the soundtrack that highlighted the music and left the dialogue out.

I find the synthesized passages and some acoustic instrumentation in their impressive for their time surround sound-like quality quite amazing. The inclusion of the finale where Martin Sheen's character steps out in his "transformed assassin shadow glory" haunting and very moving. It is one of the great moments in modern cinema and in music soundtracks.

The only confusing aspect, which I eventually was able to figure out, was why this soundtrack did not include the really cool and disturbing end credits music. Then I learned that that piece and the others like it used throughout the film were recorded separately on a CD entitled, "The Apocalypse Now Sessions" by the Rhythm Devils. The end credits music appears on the end of that disc on the final track entitled "Napalm for Breakfast." Both these discs make an all around great soundtrack for what I judge as one of the great cinematic works of art.

Love the movie but hate this sound track.......2005-05-05

The sound quality sucked.... when i listen to it it seems like it can't be the REAL music from the movie.
The tracks were unnecessarily short, I understand that some of the music in the movie repeated at times, but it was still unnecessarily short. The transition from Valkyries to Suzie Q is almost as horrible as the version of Suzie Q they use in this.
The opening is okay. The ride of the Valkyries is good while it lasts. Don't waste your money on this. Just buy the songs on other CDs.

Apocolypse: Noun.......2004-06-02

Instead of paying $3.99 for a CD featuring "Ride of the Valkyries" I bought this whole CD. It was actually a gift for my Father. I think perhaps it might be improved with the addition of more songs from the era that evoke the sense of futility and dread conjured by the film itself...thus expanding the CD play time to equal the length of the Redux...which was in turn only marginally shorter than the actual war. Not necessarily songs INCLUDED in the film, but rather music you know the guys were listening too. All in all, however, it is almost worth the price...it puts you in the same place as the movie, and that's worth something.

Like Napalm in the Morning.......2003-07-31

This is an excellent CD and one that I've wanted for many years. I, like others who've reviewed the "Redux" CD, once had the soundtrack from the _original_ version of the movie, which was basically the entire movie, complete with all dialogue. I liked that "soundtrack," but what I really wanted was _only_ the music, without dialogue, because if I really wanted the dialogue I'd just as soon watch the movie. Fortunately, the "Redux" CD does indeed have _only_ the music, which is eerily beautiful and haunting. I should point out to potential buyers, as I didn't learn this until I actually listened to the CD, that the version of The Doors' "The End" is actually the interesting remix heard in the movie, complete with synthesizer enhancements, chirping jungle crickets, and Jim Morrison's Oedipal vulgarities brought to the surface, instead of buried under the instrumentation as on The Doors original recording (in which the vulgarities can barely be heard). "Suzie Q" sounds to me an awful lot like the version in the movie, though I'm unsure it's exactly the same; it doesn't matter, it's so darn close. What's really nifty is the intro and conclusion of "Suzie Q," which contains the synthesizer effects heard in the movie as a sort of musical segway. In short, if you love "Apocalypse Now," and what you want is _the music_ from the movie, this CD is perfect. To my ears, the music doesn't sound dated at all; it could've been done yesterday for a new movie.

eerie and forboding..........2001-12-17

I've noticed some griping that this new version of the soundtrack does not contain dialogue, unlike the original 2 disc version that came out originally. well, you can't please everybody. one of my other favourite soundtracks, "Blade Runner" often gets slagged in reviews because it contains some dialogue, which some people find intrusive. if you want to hear the dialogue, watch the movie. this disc is about the music, which is as dark and forbidding as any synth music i've heard, perfectly evoking the chaos and hellish atmosphere shown on screen. track seven, "nung river" has a particularly sinister feel, making that trip up river feel inexorable. "do lung" has a nightmarish carnival sound to it, appropriate to the scene's images of a place spiralling out of control. overall, if you like dark, atmospheric soundtrack music, (it is also very rhythmic) you will enjoy this, even if you haven't seen the movie.
