Product Description
The band were one of those late 70s/early 80s combos that are hard to pigeonhole. Were they Punk? Were they Mod? Were they Power Pop? Featured on the 2 CDs are both of the band's singles A and B sides, rare compilation appearances, totally unreleased trac

'Were they Punk? Were they Mod? Were they Power Pop?'.......2006-04-08
Noooooooo....
Try post-punk, closer in style to the early Cure and the near-by Leeds agit-pop sound of groups such as Gang of Four or the Delta 5. Obviously, the folks who write for Detour Records can't (or don't want to) see past the Cigarettes' decidedly-mod-leaning duds (all turtlenecks and stripes), as I'm personally left with no other explanation as to 'why' such an aesthetically and ideologically orthodox label would foist a release such as this on its equally fanatic patrons. So...if you're expecting the Incredible Kidda Band, the Accidents or even the Fast Cars, be forewarned: it's a bit more grey-overcoat-y and skittering than all that. And all stylistic quibbles aside, the Cigarettes' output is thoroughly third-tier; about as 'essential' a document as recent retrospective discs by the Now or the Donkeys (i.e. all the decent songs are already on comps). And two discs? Please - spare us. If power pop is what you're jonesing after, your money would be much more positively employed towards the new Jook anthology. Some groups - like the Cigarettes - remain obscure for a reason. And here's two discs of ample and abiding proof if you doubt my good word.
