Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More Dave Attell than Dane Cook.......2007-06-18

This is one very funny concert, probably because he does push the limits. I have heard some people in here compare him to Dane Cook. Uhhh, I have a copy of Dane Cook's CDs and this one by Tosh is way funnier. Whereas Cook relies on being a cool buddy to the audience and relaying longwinded and contrived stories, Tosh tells jokes and he pushes the audience by saying things he knows they think are funny, but are perhaps a little afraid to laugh at in public. The smart humor had me just thinking more about Dave Attell, than Dane Cook.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-12

Daniel Tosh is a very funny comedian. I am a difficult person to please when it comes to comedy, but this is one that you just have to buy....and it comes with his CD enclosed which is also really entertaining. Only complaint is I wish the DVD was more than 22 minutes, but since the CD is included, it is worth the purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars You did it because you're whore!.......2007-05-08

One might not rush out and buy this album based on Tosh's Comedy Central Presents special. The problem with those specials is that you don't get a real feel for the comedian because they are often rushed to make the time limit and they always have to censor themselves.

This album is from a Southern California show and it's absolutely hilarious. Tosh has very unique takes on various topics and he does it with an attitude. On several bits, he will challenge the audience to the point of insulting them directly. His take on plastic surgery is brilliant and he basically tells every female audience member with fake breasts that they are whores! He's not an insult comic, so it's done with a sense of playfulness. All of his material is taken with that approach and he pulls it off.

Admittedly, his delivery and inflection is similar to Dane Cook. That's about where the similarity between the two comics begins and ends. I remember seeing Tosh in the late 90's. Dane Cook's popularity has been a more recent phenomenon. Daniel Tosh's material is very well-written, thought out and "edgey." I'm happy for Dane Cook's success, but he relies too much on physical humor and bits that are just observations with no real commentary.

I've had this CD for about 2 weeks and I've listen to it at least 6 times. I highly recommend it for people who love stand-up comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Does Dane Cook collect royalties from this?.......2007-05-01

It's a funny album, there's no question about that. But at least seventeen times throughout the album you will momentarily forget that you're not listening to Dane Cook. Tosh has lifted Cook's tone down to the last detail. Every once in a while he channels Jim Gaffigan for a moment, but 98% of the time it's pure Dane Cook. It doesn't mean he's not funny, he definitely is. I just wish he'd come up with his own thing.

Oh, and if it turns out that Daniel Tosh has been doing this way longer than Dane Cook and it's Cook who lifted his act from Tosh, then I apologize. But I'm thinking probably not.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performer.......2007-04-23

I can't believe that, at the time of this writing, there are only 14 reviews of this CD. Daniel Tosh is, hands down, one of the brightest stars the stand-up industry has to offer right now and he will only get more popular when his next release hits stores this summer.

To sum up the cd, Mr. Tosh is an original. His material AND delivery are fresh, playful, edgy, and absurd all mixed into one fluidly entertaining package. This is a performer who has a unique idea of what his version of "funny" is and knows how to deliver it in a way that gets his audiences howling early and often.

Comedy Central Records, who has an extremely noble, albeit short, history of providing bright and original new comedians to the masses (the only noteably regrettable sidestep being Kyle Cease, and I'm sure the inevitable Carlos Mencia) really did the industry a tremendous service by signing Daniel Tosh to their team. He deserves every due he gets. Outside of the Dave Attell CD, this is probably the best album they have in their line-up.

Other than that, all you need to know is that the only possible way you can have a better time than listening to this CD is to see Daniel live at a club. I've seen him four summers in a row and hope to continue the tradition. I wish him the best and look forward to getting the next CD signed upon his next appearence in Denver. Now go do yourself a favor and pick up this Album!

The master of comedy doesn't dissapoint. He is a true comic genius and a master of his craft. Own all of his cd's you will never be tired of listening to them. Same goes for the DVD's he has out.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis Black is brilliant .......2007-01-19

Here Mr. Black takes on the government after 9/11 plus other topics with intellegence and wonderful spot on observations. He is also very funny. This is my favorite album of his so far.

3 out of 5 stars he's no bill cosby, but.........2006-11-08

I liked this cd a lot. The End Of The Universe skit is hilarious. My only gripe, and don't call me a pu**y for saying this, is that he swears too much. I have no problem with swearing, it's just he uses it so much sometimes, it gets annoying. Instead of being part of his act, the whole angry thing becomes his act. At times, it's just annoying. He could easily get across the same jokes without yelling and saying fu*k every two words. Some of this jokes are hilarious while some really aren't that funny. They're observations that we all make, he just yells them.

5 out of 5 stars His best album.......2006-09-06

While all of Lewis Black's comedy albums are very good, his second release, The End of the Universe, remains his best release to date. Released months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, Black's delivery is passionate and intelligent throughout the album. Whether he's ranting on the over the top spectacle that has become the Super Bowl, the U.S. government's lack of common sense, or the ridiculousness of airport security, Black's observations are both humorous and accurate. Also worth noting is that unlike his more recent albums like the Carnegie Hall Performance, the album never becomes long winded or too political. Other tracks that deal with Jerry Falwell's controversial statements about 9/11 and global warming are also very funny and dead on. An excellent album from one of the best comedians working today, The End of the Universe shows Lewis Black at the height of his powers. Highly recommended.

Comedian Lewis Black, best known for his caustic yet hilarious social commentary as a commentator on Comedy Central's Daily Show, unleashes nearly an hour of his insightful material on this CD. Recorded just shortly before Thanksgiving 1999, we catch Lewis on one of his incredible tirades against all things inane and moronic, be it the weather person, or Bill Clinton's definition of "is."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-01-03

I think David Cross is about the funniest guy ever. This disc is not that good. Couple chuckles here and there and long stretches of rambling unfunniness in between.

1 out of 5 stars Not funny.......2006-12-14

Many people tackle social issues with their entertainment. Many people do it well. For example Bob Dylan wrote (writes) great songs that addressed current issues. David Cross tries to do the same thing with comedy, which is a nice idea. But his jokes are not funny. Nice idea, but drawn out, repetitive, and boring. Not funny.

3 out of 5 stars Comedy is subjective, but this barely cuts it........2006-11-13

This CD is stuck under the humor section, and true to form, you'll find stand-up in it. But it's a kind of humor that doesn't lend itself well to an audio CD. It's entirely possible that seeing David Cross live, you might be able to pick up on his enthusiasm, and it might make some of his satire seem more convincing. Here, though, the material comes off more as a series of rants, and frankly, fueled by stock cynicism rather than a genuine desire to see change in his topic of choice.

He's unafraid to speak his mind, which makes his criticism stronger, but because he seems to take everything so damn seriously, it's more difficult for an audience to laugh.

As comedy goes in general, there's three aspects of it that can help it to succeed or fail.

1. The joke substance (irony/absurdity)
2. The timing
3. The delivery

With Cross, there's plenty of the irony and absurdity in his source material. However, his timing and his delivery suffer because he tends to go back over the same material a few times, trying to drive the point home. In fact, Cross' solution in many cases on the CD seems to be to compensate for a lack of laughs by becoming more furious.

This works for some comedians, like Lewis Black, but then, Lewis Black's career has flourished because he has a stage presence, or persona-- one which his audience is familiar with, and one that provides them a way to pick up on his delivery every time. Cross seems to operate more in a free-flowing, stream of consciousness way, making it more difficult for the audience to find definitive punchlines.

In short, my impression is that Cross seems to be performing more for his own peace of mind than to entertain others. That's a perfectly fine way to express oneself in a blog, where ranting and criticism are par for the course, and in truth Cross comes off as a fairly good satirist, but an audio CD highlights Cross' lack of stage presence.

Buy this CD if you want cathartic and sometimes chuckle-worthy social criticism, but not if you want a CD that is "entertaining," in the traditional sense of the word.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-07-06

David Cross is so funny. I love when he does his Atlanta accent. He's one of the more intelligent comedians out there too.

5 out of 5 stars Review from a cranky terrorist!.......2006-03-23

David Cross is well known. Sort of.

I usually remind others about him through movies like "Pootie Tang" and "Scary Movie 2". These movies have their funny parts, but they kind of mask the person that is David Cross. He started his career with standup, as a teenager. He's been a wonderfully insightful and funny comedian for over two decades, and this CD set is one of the best comedy albums of all time.

The CD set itself is very adventurous. A two CD standup set from almost any other comedian would seen overblown and pretentious, and you have to give it to David for having the balls to not cut this tour's material down to one disc. It's long, yes, but it doesn't wear out its welcome, and Mr. Cross tackles so many topics that nearly everyone is to find something they love (and maybe even hate) in this set.

He discusses his childhood; growing up in Roswell Georgia ("the whitest place in America"), and how his Jewish family was treated by locals, that "for a lack of a better term" are called Southern Baptist. He also discusses 9/11 (he lived, and still does, in NYC), and the effect it had on America in the way of crass commercialization ("have flags grafted on the inside of your eyelids so that at all times you have flags!") and neurotic patriotism.

The two best tracks are at the end of the second disc, where he discusses at length a drunken ordeal with the band Harlow, preceded by a mockery of rambunctious radio DJ's, and the track after, which discusses "the Promise Keepers" and their writings about events that "you know never happened".

[...] I'm only kidding.

There's very little wrong with this set, and the length of the tracks is not a problem. David has a great ability of building up tension and timing his jokes with great precision (any comedian will tell you that timing is a comedians most powerful tool). And while he says the "F-word" an awful lot, he uses it in such careful ways, as to punctuate an emotion he's feeling that may have not come through during the tension building I mentioned above. A parallel could almost be made here with Richard Pryor and the word "nigger"; something he struggled to get over in his childhood, and finally added to his arsenal, bringing about a revolution in comedy.

Today, there are hundreds of mediocre one-trick-pony comedians that work clubs day and night pulling out dick jokes (think of who Bill Hicks used to make fun of) and clever commentary on racism. This has been done a thousand times, but David Cross (along with others who I plan to review) gives us something more to think about; he brings issues to the front (once again, as Hicks did, but not to that extent) while providing great, hilarious examples of real life experiences using a great (and funny sounding) speaking voice.

These two discs are pricless to me- my friends and I still quote them all the time. The issues are also still relevant, and the discs require more than one listen to fully appreciate (there is alot of material here, after all). I really can't recommend any other working comedian over David Cross.

"I don't care if you've been in a [...] shark attack!"

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Amazon.com essential recording

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz

Amazon.com

Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13

Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

2 out of 5 stars So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01

This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

4 out of 5 stars A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17

This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Wait! Before you buy..........2006-05-28

... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

5 out of 5 stars La mas bella y fidedigna interpretacion que se pueda obtener.......2004-12-29

Our family was recently "introduced" to the CD's by Roy D. Mercer. After listening to a couple different CD's, we knew we would be getting some of our own. They are so funny, they have had our family and friends laughing out loud!

5 out of 5 stars a great cd for anyone who loves to play jokes on others.......2002-05-08

I have been listening to RD Mercer for about 3 years now. Unlike the Jerky Boys (who I dont find funny at all) RD Mercer calls up people with a problem, asks for money to solve the problem and then if he gets no money he tells them he will kick there butt....and the lets the person on the other end off the hook. This CD never has a dull call and will keep you on the edge of your seat. To me this is the last of the best radio skits around.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Much Better.......2000-12-22

Probably the best yet. Zeerox the mynah bird is incredibly funny!

5 out of 5 stars Never a Dull Moment With Roy D. Mercer........2000-10-13

Roy D. Mercer is a telephone prankster which is actually, the creation of two DJS from Tulsa, Oklahoma, namely, Brent Douglas (the voice of Mercer) and Phil Stone. In each of its' ribtickling releases, Mercer, calls up on unsuspecting victims tells them that their responsible for a strange incident that took place. The fun part is that Mercer threatens to whup their you-know-what if he isn't financially compensated. Unlike the Jerky Boys, Phil and Brent let their victims off the hook.

Volume Seven never has a dull moment. One of the highlights is track two "Roy vs Goldberg" which features its' first celebrity victim, professional wrestler Bill Goldberg. My favorite of all has to be "Giant Squarsh" in which Roy harasses a TV journalist about her failure to show up to cover a giant Squash." Wait until you hear her reaction when she realizes that the phone call was a prank.

Like the first six volumes, you'll get an enjoyment out of people reacting to Roy's threat of a major "...".

If you never heard of Roy D. Mercer. Volume Seven counts as your introduction to this mad redneck maniac and his two creators.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE SHOCK COMEDY.......2006-05-05

this guy is one of the funniest muthafackers ive ever heard. and hes so brutally honest. he has the weirdest point of view of things. many people cant handle this. like he always says "i feel like im leading you guys into battle, you wont all be here in the end" if you dont mind vulgar crazy comedy. then check this guy out. youll love him, i know i did, he can always make me laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Bracing, Vulgar and Unflinchingly Honest.......2006-05-01

Comedian Doug Stanhope is truly an antidote for the inoffensive blandness of many mainstream standup comedians. Hard to believe this is the same guy who hosted "The Man Show" and "Girls Gone Wild." There's no vacuous, fratboy humor here. In fact, one of the edgiest (and funniest) bits is a pro-school shootings rant in which Stanhope confesses his secret high school desire to "kill all the jocks." It is true that Stanhope's raunchy sex jokes are a big part of his appeal, but his consistent stance on behalf of the little guy (and girl) completely separates him from the dimwitted Andrew Dice Clays of the world.

All that said, "Die Laughing" is probably the best of Stanhope's CD recordings (along with "Something to Take the Edge Off"). If you're looking for a place to get acquainted with his extreme verve, this would be the place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Cerebral, Vulgar, and Funny.......2006-03-15

Doug Stanhope puts out a consistently off beat style of comedy. The set featured on this album lives up to the standards of his previous efforts. Doug Stanhope is a different kind of funny, kind of like watching someone beat the hell out of a Mime. His Humor is not as deep as a guy like Dennis Miller, but requires more thought than a guy like Chris Rock. I think anyone who enjoys Lewis Black, Joe Rogan, or any of Doug's previous albums will get a laugh out of this CD. If you're easily offened this CD probably isn't for you, if you have a good sense of humor and can laugh at something because it is a joke, this album is a decent buy.

4 out of 5 stars a new dimension in the comedy of Stanhope.......2003-02-16

Die laughing is the almost complete transformation of Stanhope from a autobiographical comic ("Sicko" is basically just all stories from his life) to one as a social critquer of our society. I personally believe Stanhope is at his best when he's doing an almost even mix of the two, as "A little something to take the edge off" was. This cd leaves the listener feeling angry at the end, which is how Doug probably intended for it to turn out, almost like talk radio does. That is not to say this cd is not funny, Stanhope on his worst day could blow the socks off of any other living comic (maybe even Hicks?) and this cd delivers many of those laugh at loud outrageous off the cuff comments you've come to expect of Stanhope. Just the theme is a little too dark. If you have Stanhope's other cds and are very familiar with him then buy this one immediately. If you are a beginner I would recommend "Something to take the edge off" first, then "Sicko" and then this cd. It's not for people who are just beginning to study the brilliance and art of Stanhope's work. (Believe me, it is truly brilliant and it is art)

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, brutal comedy by a modern stand-up master........2002-11-14

For those of you haven't heard of him, Doug Stanhope is one of the most talented and outrageous comedians working stand-up today. A gifted storyteller and writer, Stanhope mines his prodigious libido and colorful life as sources for his comedy. Less autobiographical than his earlier "Sicko" (I haven't listened to his other albums), the appropriately titled "Die Laughing" finds Stanhope injecting a dose of brutal nihilism into his raunchy material. I laughed, and I laughed hard, but I certainly wasn't in a happy mood after hearing the material on this album. Stanhope is often compared to the late, great Bill Hicks, and that is in some ways an apt comparison. Both men were enemies of the forces of hypocrisy and reaction, clever satirists of the human condition, and razor-sharp storytellers and comedians. Hicks' comedy, however, though often dark and aggressive, was leavened by his belief in human evolutionary potential. By contrast, Stanhope's material is far darker, for he evinces no faith in anything beyond sex, death, and human stupidity. Hearing this album, I could almost picture Stanhope killing himself on stage as a final punch line. This isn't meant as a criticism of Stanhope's material, since its not for me to sentimentalize the purity of his vision or his role as an artist. . . Anyway, don't let the way-too pretentious blather in this review stop you from buying this album. Stanhope is a comic treasure.
