As further proof that the virtuosity of Jerry Douglas knows no categorical bounds, the biggest surprise on his predominantly instrumental The Best Kept Secret is a revival of the disco-era smash "Back in Love Again," with Alison Krauss supplying as much vocal funk as she can muster. The undisputed master of the shimmering Dobro (and a featured member of Krauss's band Union Station), Douglas also applies his artistry to the jazzy atmospherics of Weather Report's "A Remark You Made," pays homage to Celtic fiddler Aly Bain on the reflective "Sir Aly B," trades licks with guitarist Bill Frisell on the twangy "Lil' Ro Ro," and enlists John Fogerty for guest vocals on "Swing Blues #1." The album additionally showcases Douglas on lap steel, with guitarist Derek Trucks providing rock propulsion on the opening "She Makes Me Want to Sing." A breakdown with banjoist Béla Fleck and mandolinist Sam Bush on "Who's Your Uncle?" finds Douglas on more familiar turf at his bluegrass best. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Not what you'd think.......2007-06-13
I've heard Douglas on various records and liked him quite a bit -- but most of his work has been in the narrow field of bluegrass. I didn't run out to buy this because I saw Sam Bush, Allison Krause and Bela Fleck were on it and thought it'd be another bluegrass mainstream record.
It is not. This is a fusion session; and while it pushes too hard at some points to be one (the version of "A Remark you Made" a classic of
the fusion repetoire, is a good but not great moment) it succeeds completely in others.
"She Makes Me Want to Sing" is a classic of tight fitting rock with a sort of Alabama-Allman Brothers flavor -- but what it reminds me of most is early Quicksilver Messenger Service or possibly the Grateful Dead from before Live/Dead. It is energetic, expressive, tight, and it rocks.
"The Best Kept Secret" opens similarly, but goes off into a Zawinul-influenced meditation before coming back to its roots. At moments it reminds me of Miles Davis, post 'Kind of Blue' but with railroad songs at the root instead of soul riffs.
"Lil' Roro" is a roots rocker with country blues as the taproot. "Swing Blues" is well described elsewhere, but it's also not bluegrass. "Ya Ya etc. is more like Bela Fleck when he's NOT being a bluegrass musician,
i.e., UFO-TOFU style.
The Best Kept Secret.......2007-05-13
The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

great music.......2007-01-15
I heard about this CD in the interview that Jerry Douglas did on NPR; otherwise, I might not have purchased it. We are really enjoying the music.
King of the Dobro.......2007-01-13
If you want to hear the music of the hottest dobro player on the planet, then this CD is for you.
Jerry Douglas brings his high energy, bluegrass-influenced, impeccably tasteful style to this, his latest CD, and God bless him for it.
Special surprise--Gabe Witcher, virtuoso fiddler--plays with Jerry on a song that Gabe wrote, "Snow's First Fall," a delicate melodic piece to balance some of the more hard-driving pieces on the CD.

Album Description
"A Brother's Dream marks only their third release, following the wonderful self-titled 1987 Hightone debut and its follow-up, Let's Get Back, released a dozen years later on Mocombo. There are moments that remind of Robert Cray, Santana, and even a taste here and there of War and Los Lobos. This is not indicative of a proclivity to emulate other musicians, but rather points to the quality of songwriting and superb musicianship that the bros. bring to the studio. This is a band loaded with heart, emotion and chops, and one that stands shoulder to shoulder with any of their left coast contemporaries." Mark Gallo
Customer Reviews:
just awsome.......2006-05-04
I LOVE THE LYRICS, THE BEAT, AND THE STYLE, THESE BROTHERS BRING TO THEIR SONGS. WHATS IT GONNA BE BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, MANY OF THE TIMES I'VE LISTENED TO IT. IT DESERVES TO BE HEARD NATIONWIDE, NO WORLDWIDE, SO FATHERS AND MOTHERS AND CHILDREN CAN APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY AND MEANING IN THE WORDS. THE BLUES MIXED WITH SWING JUST MAKES ME WANT TO DANCE, AND/OR MOVE IN MY SEAT. ITS ALSO THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT JUST MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD INSIDE. I'M GRATEFUL I CAME ACROSS THESE ROCKERS IN SIMI VALLEY THIS YEAR CUZ I'VE NOW BECOME ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST FANS.
Great music from a great live act.......2004-03-05
The Brothers continue to build on the success and quality of their last album, "Let's get Back". From the rocking "Betty Sue" to the emotional closer "Talk to my Friend", they've crafted another collection of the highest quality songwriting.
Sadly, this kind of music rarely makes the tightly formatted radio playlists. But, fans of tight musicianship, and heartfelt songs with real emotion will find plenty to keep them happy.
Look for them live playing in Southern California. I've seen them dozens of times and they've never once let me down or given a show that was less than 110%. They are guys who love what they do, and they do it well...Give it a try, I'm sure that you'll love it!

This girl has got a voice and a half!.......1999-09-22
First off, I feel kind of bad for giving this album only three stars..I gave it 3, instead of 5 because of my personal taste in musical style and lyrics. (Some of the songs were kind of tired like: "How Do I Tell My Little Sister?"..and "The Captain And The Lady". They were a little too back-woods-country-potunk for me.) But other selections like "His Love..,Talkin..,Find Your Baby Gone, and Boogie In The Middle" are some of the best complex blues vocals that I have heard in a long time. This woman has one of the greatest strongest voices that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I'de say good management is the only thing that's keeping this songbird from the big time. This CD is definately worth buying!

Bring Back Dilla!.......2005-10-12
This is classic Slum sounds. I don't think I can think of another group that mixes so well with production and voice tones. Even though they are not doing entire albums anymore, I really enjoy this classic SV sound. A few of the tracks are fillers, but if you are a beat nut, Dilla drops it everytime. Your neck will be sore after listening to this...
This is J-88 but people, do not 86 it!.......2004-04-03
If you LOVE slum village like I do get this album as a sample of what was SV B4 Fantastic. I for the most like the calm, smooth and laid back beats and flows supplied, yet the best songs on here are the remixes. Madlib brings great energy and keeps the CCC (Cool, Calm, Collected) feel with his two remixes and the last song is so different that it's cool to hear. Tracks 4-6 have too much of a laid back sound and put me to sleep. This is high quality hip-hop for everyone to enjoy!
Their rhymes should've STAYED a secret!.......2002-04-13
"This is the look of/got somethin' to do with uh/bein' a man and handlin' your biz/what's love got to do with it/ask SV-it's all (B.S.)"
Couldn't have said it better myself...actually I could've...ANYBODY could've...oh well!
The Slum Village release an EP under the name J-88 (for contract reasons I guess).
When "Look of Love" hit the speakes, the track was hypnotizing! Of course this is an SV joint, and you just know they got to get in the vocal booth! Baatin & T3 ruin this blissful track with some of the most embarrassing SEX rhymes I have ever heard since Biggie hooked up with LUKE! Listen to "Look of Love" and just think of all the MC's that could have turned this into a tight song!
Some of the songs are really outtakes from SV's unreleased FANTASTIC VOL. 1. ("Stupid Lies", "Things You Do") J-Dilla pretty much hooked up some throwaway beats in this EP, while Baatin & T3 sound 100 times worse than they ever were! Loop-digger extraordiniar Madlib comes by to remix the EP's 2 worst songs ("Things You Do", "Get it Together") and the results would've been pleasant...if not for the horrid deliveries of Baatin & T3...
...meanwhile, Jeru, Canibus, Ras Kass, and many others are dying for a decent beat right about now!
Take my advice: search for the instrumentals!
3.5 starz baby!!!!.......2001-08-23
YO THIS ALBUM IS PRETTY TIGHT, BUT FANTASTIC VOL.2 EDGES IT OUT THOUGH(COP THAT ALBUM IF U DO NOT HAVE IT). I HEARD THIS ALBUM A COUPLE OF DAYZ AGO AND FELT THE BEATS. JAY DEE IS A VERY CREATIVE PRODUCER AND THE GROUP ITSELF ALSO. I AM A SLUM V FAN AND JUST LIKE TO SAY "GET DIS MONEY."
They Thought They Were Slick!!!.......2000-10-15
Man, the S to the Vee thought they were slick disguising themselves as J-88. I lucked upon this record by accident. I am SO glad that I did. I am one of the world's biggest Slum Village fans. I've been down with them since Jay Dee produced two tracks on the Mad Skills album, "From Where?!" back in '96. They are the saviors of hip-hop right now. They brought excitement and true musical innovation back. From the intro, "From Detroit With Love" to the last of the "Look of Love" remixes, they are bringing the REAL....That last remix is a bit chaotic and off-beat, but hip-hop is about progression and pushing limits (shout to Hiero). Yes, everyone complains about the lack of depth and total lack of respect of females in their lyrics. But, you know what? They're REAL. Lyrics inspiring Brothers to handle their biz, make that music and love your woman (you have to dig deep in the sea of misogny to find some "light") is a LOT better than hearing continously tired lyrics about jewelry, flossing, gear, and vehicles. GOD BLESS THE SLUM and J-88!! If you are a true SV head, look for J-88. You won't be sorry!!!

Avoid at all costs.......2007-04-03
Not playful, not energetic, nor creative , unlike what they've done before. Looks like something they quickly threw together to make a fast buck. I love this band, however, only when they're at their best...and this is completely the opposite! Ced Gee is horrible on the mic and makes Lil Wayne look like a genius. Buy a Kool Keith solo album instead!
They definitely wasted the opportunity to show the new hiphop fans why they've earned "legend" status.
Could have been better or worse.......2007-03-16
This is a just okay reunion album for the legendary Ultramags. It could have been much better, when you take "Critical Beatdown", "Funk Your Head Up", "Four Horseman" etc in to account. It also could have been much worse. Ced Gee sounds horrible on the mic. Keith sounds good on most tracks, but overall, the magic just isn't there on alot of the tracks. There are about 6 real bangers on here, but for Ultramagnetic, every song should be dope. I think it would have been better if TR and Moe Love had produced more tracks and if Ced had only rapped on a couple of tracks.
Ultra is Back!!.......2007-02-08
The reviewer below obviously didn't listen to the album... Thank God Kool Keith had a huge creative influence on this album, their beats are up with the Neptunes recent album with the click.... Some Futuristic minimal referncing the old school but always being new... This album tops anything i thought they were gonna do...
I'm hapy Moe Love and TR didn't get that many produced tracks on the final cut, it would of been boring, you can still get their produced ultra tracks on other albums and comps... Do your homework kid... As for anyone looking to buy this album, A must of any fan of Kool Keith and real progress of new material in the rap game... I Highly Recoment!!!
Awful return of Ultramagnetic.......2007-01-10
I wrote a review but I guess it was so bad for Ultramagnetic, Amazon booted it. The album is trash. Nothing at all like the 3 studio albums made over a decade ago. But don't take my word for it, sample for yourself.
Ahead of their time? Faith no more. What can I say about this album without my review getting kicked off Amazon again? I've used no profanity or content of explicit nature but this album highly does. 1988's CRITICAL BEATDOWN never, ever gave that kind of deliverance. That's why that's a classic and THE BEST KEPT SECRET is not, by any means (vocally, production, lyrically, concept). Can I get a witness? Please?
DJ MOE LUV is the only producer on the album trying to keep that old Ultramagnetic sound alive here on "Vibrato" and "Mechanism Nice (Born Twice)" the album's 1st single. CED-GEE kills the album verbally and lyrically bragging of 16 bars in almsot every track and being very explicit and obscene (never heard that on CRITICAL BEATDOWN by CED). KOOL KEITH does fine on solo track "Late Nite Rumble" but KOOL KEITH is goin' nowhere with his lyricism and on most of the other songs, HIS delivery is sounding just like CED's towards the end of the album. T.R. LOVE? M.I.A. You see him in photos, you hear silence from him, he doesn't even produce a track. Production by CED, MOE and 2 others and the other 2 sound like KUTMASTA KURT producing (producer for most of KOOL KEITH solo stuff). I do not mean that in a good way. The beats of "Nottz" is bangin', the lyrics by both KEITH and CED should raise eyebrows on what's next to come for THE BEST KEPT SECRET being the B-side to the 1st single "Mechanism Nice (Born Twice)".
Songs like "Ain't It Good 2 U" (2007) and "Party Started" are for gentleman's clubs for the girls to dance to. Now do you see what direction this album is goin'? If you're lookin' for Ultramagnetic to comback with a reunion album with the same spacey super dope production and/or the masterful, brainiac, monkey wrench lyricism as CRITICAL BEATDOWN; FUNK YOUR HEAD UP and THE FOUR HORSEMEN albums gave you over a decade ago, you will not find it here. Maybe in the next 14 years. Right Ultramag?

Customer Reviews:
Not bad actually..........2006-02-07
Though this album doesn't exactly represent the pinnacle of excellence in hip-hop, there are a few tracks on here that are worth a listen. This is especially true if you were/are a fan of either rap from the mid-90s or NBA basketball from that era. It's a plus if you happen to like both (as I did as a teenager back in the day).
Tracks of note on here are:
1) Malik Sealy - Don't Get Lost In The Sauce - An extremely "real" track about his upbringing, lessons learned from life, and his dedication and focus. It is actually of historical importance because Malik Sealy died unexpectedly a few years later... making this track all that much more important. The song as a whole (including beat and lyrics) is also quite good.
2) Cedric Ceballos f/ Warren G - Flow On - A popular west-coast anthem for it's time. It's sound embodies the prime of G-funk era music and is fun to listen to.
3) Jason Kidd - What The Kidd Didd - Though he pretty much just talks about how big he is, the song has a tight beat and is engineered well. It's actually pretty funny to listen to some of the lyrics now, but entertaining nonetheless.
4)Gary Payton - Living Legal And Large - Gary Payton is considered old skool now, but he was in fact "legal and large" in the 90s. The content in this song is enjoyable to listen to and the beat is worth mentioning too.
In sum, I guess this album targets a very niche audience... So if you happen to appreciate the NBA of the mid-90s or when rap was just beginning to become a worldwide phenomenon (or the intersection of the two), you might want to pick this one up.
You dont want this.......2005-11-05

Customer Reviews:
A change of pace for Sheena.......2004-02-26
Sheena Easton started to take a new musical direction with this album - edgier, catchier dance-rock material as opposed to her earlier pop repertoire. This is an album that you have to listen to while remembering its context - the early 80's - because the production is quite typical of those days. For those of us who aren't embarassed to admit that 80's music was fantastic (and there are many of us), this album is a real treat.
The debut single, "Telefone", became a top ten single, and its nervous keyboards and heartfelt vocals certainly turned it into an arresting performance. The heart-wrenching ballad "Almost over you" also became a moderate hit, but the third single ("Devil in a fast car", definitely one of the album's rare weak spots) deservedly went nowhere. But there are many other highlights on this album, such as the effervescent "Sweet talk", "I like the fright" and "Let sleeping dogs lie". Sheena has always excelled at ballads, and this album lives up to her reputation : "Just one smile" is a lovely ballad that features Sheena at her most expressive, and "Don't leave me this way" is a real showstopper where Sheena's desperation is heartfelt and as real as it gets.
There are a couple of weak moments ("Devil in a fast car", the silly "She's in love with her radio" and the dull, linear "Best kept man"), but overall the high moments of this album (and there are plenty) make it much worth the purchase.
Sheena's EMI albums were all re-released with remastered sound and plenty of cool extra tracks. This album certainly has its share : "Wish you were here tonight" is a ballad that would have become a standard (if EMI hadn't relegated it as the B-Side of "Telefone"), and "I don't need your word" is also a beautiful ballad. Also included are extended dance versions of "Telefone", and her smash top 10 hit duet with Kenny Rogers, "We've got tonight". Those extras are just an additional argument as to why you should rush and purchase this great CD.

Album Description
To call this power-pop would be too limiting, though on Ruth Ruth's latest they do play well with the turbo-charged, sing-along anthems and infectious hooks. However, it doesn't stop there. The band demonstrates as much pop passion as they do punk'tude, creating a lyrically-strong, melodically-rich record that hones in on the vitality of both worlds, delivering a record for music fans, the way Ruth Ruth's most notable influence, Elvis Costello, still does today. From the straight-ahead blasts of rock through the more contemplative feelers, this is real pop music, ripe with sweat and emotion. Now it is time, right about now, for you to check this gem out.
