One of THEE and THE great rock albums of the last 20 years.......2005-08-22
That's both THEE, as in a '60s garage-rock affectation, and THE, as in a definitive. I recently went back and bought the enhanced CD version of The Vipers' debut album (originally released Christmastime '84 on vinyl on the PVC label) so I could more readily show my LP-lacking friends in Fresno what they've been missing these past two decades. Surprise! -- even though I knew the disc by heart, it was a mad, wild experience all over again listening to the CD cranked on the computer's surround sound.
In the late '90s, Vipers frontman Jon Weiss was as responsible as anyone for the latter-day garage resurgence as the creator of the Cavestomp! music festivals in NYC (1997-2001), conjuring by alchemy a host of legendary acts we never thought we'd see in person (? and the Mysterians, The Remains, The Pretty Things, The Chocolate Watchband, Richard & the Young Lions, The Standells and most especially The Monks) and putting them on bills with neo-garage bands past, present and future (Fleshtones, Lyres, Plasticland, Chesterfield Kings, Fuzztones, The Swingin' Neckbreakers, The Mooney Suzuki and yes, The Vipers, too). And that's why Steve Van Zandt gives Weiss his propers every week on his radio show.
But back in the '80s, Weiss, a onetime Fleshtones saxman, was the gangly, youthfully nasal-voiced, maracas-wielding leader of a quintet that absorbed the sounds of many '60s rock, blues and psychedelic records, found out where the over-the-top point was, and then climbed over it, simple as that. Anyway, they had a cool, sleek name and, on this album, a sound to more than back it up.
The opening tune, "Nothing's From Today," with its chiming guitar opening the door into another dimension ... truth is, I preferred the original version (which appeared on Voxx Records' "Battle of the Garages Vol. 2" LP months before), with its dag nasty fuzz guitar intro; the "Outta the Nest" remake was maybe too clean. But looking back, it was a nitpick -- and besides, the enhanced CD has both takes. Then, there was the convincer -- track 2, "Now I Remember," an explosion of sight, sound, mind, drums, chimes and Eastern-influenced guitar madness, sent far over the wall midway through with a wailing scream from Weiss. The rest was just dessert (and just deserts): the brutal-nasty fuzz guitar line that provided the kick to The Standells' "Medication"; the romp-stomp of The Loved Ones' "Surprise Surprise"; the poppy, full-on, near-insane swirl of "Tellin' Those Lies"; "Cheated and Lied," which sounded like the theme to a '60s secret agent series; "Borrowed Time," commenced with a Middle Eastern guitar curlicue that set the tone to another agent-series-theme-in-wait; the appropriately gloomy overtones of "Dark as My Day" and "Not to Be in Love"; and the band's most sensitive song, the smart strummer "Tears (Only Dry)."
In its time, this was a 12-song record that went 12-deep. (The enhanced CD has eight bonus cuts, including the aforementioned original "Nothing's From Today," the ace stomper "Doin' It Well" and a rough version of "We're Outta Here" used as a flexidisc with Ron Rimsite's legendary garage zine 99th Floor.) But -- pick your favorite hot stove league reason -- "Outta the Nest!" didn't bust out beyond its rabid but limited audience. And sadly, for several reasons, this was good as it would get for The Vipers, who were done by the end of the '80s.
But good music is eternal; Weiss and music fiends like him have certainly demonstrated that over the years with their zeal to expose the great rock'n'roll of the '60s to the audience it deserves. Maybe someone should do the same good turn for The Vipers and get this disc and listen to what they've missed and then spread the word ...
Amazing Harmonies and Garage Fuzz!.......2004-10-22
WOW -- what a great collection of tracks by this great Garage act from NYC's "Cavestomp" days. This has almost all the material they ever recorded & it starts off really strong with the album it taks it's title from. Excellent recording and playing on this. The only drawback is near the end of the cd both suffer, and there's even a stylistic shift to more down-tempo and 'blues' sound - but the majority of the disc is tight and well-produced Sixties Mersey beat influenced Garage Pop well worth the price.
Memories of College Radio Days.......2002-12-24
These guys were something else in the mid-80s when I first encountered their sound. Check "Cheated and Lied," a track that is spot-on Knickerbockers! Treading territory familiar from the Flaming Groovies, Hoodoo Gurus, and REM, the Vipers knew their influences and paid faithful homage to their psychedelic sonic heroes in that acid/power pop revival of the 80s. Very glad to encounter this release with the bonus tracks. "Primitive, man." says the man on the back. "Crunchy, man." say I.
A blast from the (near) past.......2000-02-17
Superb garage rock in a melodic vein. Fans of the Cynics, Fleshtones, Lyres, etc. will be suitably impressed. Extra tracks make an already formidable album even better.

Excellent and powerful album........1999-07-14
This album, while being a new recording, will hold you spellbound. From the start you feel that the Mysterians have lost absolutely nothing over the years. If anything 96 tears is slightly better than the original. Cheree is phenomenal and there are superb covers of the Jaynettes '63 hit "Sally Go Round the Roses" and the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction".
It is strange however that having included a crackly vinyl transcript of ? and Co's very first single, that they could not do the same with the original version of the classic "96 Tears". Never mind, if you are too young to remember it you won't miss it after the version presented here.
? (Question Mark) & the Mysterians RULE!.......1999-04-20
? himself remains the epitome of rock attitude, maintaining that he was born on Mars, that he lived with dinosaurs, and that he will be singing '96 Tears' in the year 10,000.
With most faded 60s bands, that would be the end of the story. But a link-up with the Collectables record label produced one of the best revivals of recent years. Collectables is best-known for its huge catalogue of of reissues, mostly doo-wop, R&B and all kinds of 60s music. But when they discovered that the rights to the orignal Cameo label lay with ABKCO, after Allen Klein's takeover in 1967, they decided to fund an album of re-recordings. The sessions duly took place over four days in July 1997.
Such re-recordings are normally pale shadows of the originals, to be avoided at all costs, but ? & the Mysterians are the exception to the rule. The core original line-up of ?, Balderrama, Rodriguez, Martinez and Lugo quickly proved that they could still cut killer versions of their songs, often in one take. The 16 track album was supported by live dates that showed they were still one tight and rocking band. They were, and still are, everything that rock should be.

COMpliCAtion!.......2005-03-08
There's but one reason this album has to exist: as proof to the rest of the world that The Monks were real, not a myth, and that they played their first two shows in 32 years -- their first two shows ever on their native soil -- on the first Friday and Sunday of November 1999. But that doesn't mean you have to buy it, especially if you weren't there.
I was there for both of their shows at Cavestomp '99 in NYC (and have the rope tie that drummer Roger Johnston, RIP as of November 2004, threw into the crowd after the last show). It was one of the great rock'n'roll weekends of my life, and I've had many. Unfortunately, this CD is nowhere near a true representation of what went on that weekend, but hey, it couldn't be avoided. Singer/guitarist Gary Burger blew out his voice a couple days before the first gig, and the band enlisted a longtime fan, Mike Fornatale, to do most of the singing, especially the first night. (And Mike did a great job -- became a legend in NYC music circles, too.) It didn't really matter that Gary had no vocal cords that first night and was still ragged two nights later; we were all flying on adrenaline and just plain enthralled to be seeing a bit of rock'n'roll history.
But because of Gary's problem, there was no way the CD could capture the monks magic. And while necessary, the slew of obvious overdubs made it worse. Luckily, the playing was pretty decent -- Gary wailing on guitar, Dave Day having a blast on banjo, Eddie Shaw fully into it on bass, Roger steadily pounding away with the butt ends of his sticks, and Larry Clark's church organ sounds turning the Westbeth Theatre into a majestic cathedral. Gawd, I wish Gary had his voice ...
If you were there, you need to hear this just for posterity's sake. If you're a newbie who's never heard The Monks before, please don't start here -- pick up "Black Monk Time" and then "Five Upstart Americans."
Back to the water, boys, land stinks!.......2001-01-20
Okay, it's a comeback album. Scary propositon, right? Reunion gigs usually fail to live up to dangerously high expectations.
This is one time it works. The Monks deliver a fantastic set that finally allows listeners to understand how overbeat sounded in Germany's beer drenched clubs circa '66. The Monks are the main proponents and orginators of minimalism and devolution. Hence the title in this review. This is as raw and simple as it gets. Ramones, eat yer hearts out!
Most garage fans are analog snobs etc. Modern technology actually captures what Monk music sounded like live. The entire band is an organic rhythm section. Some of this stuff absolutely smokes the BLACK MONK TIME VERSIONS, especially SHUT UP. The song is so heavy it would make Metallica blush.
Admittedly, the album takes a while to get cooking. Around CUCKOO, we have ignition. From there on, this album stakes a claim to enter the fabled live albums Hall of Fame. By the end of this CD, you might be willing to place it alongside LIVE YARDBIRDS! FEATURING JIMMY PAGE, JERRY LEE LEWIS LIVE AT THE STAR CLUB and AC/DC's IF YOU WANT BLOOD YOU'VE GOT IT as one of the best live albums ever.
It's certainly doesn't tarnish the Monks recorded legacy as a previous reviewer suggests. It's a fitting epitath for the Monks, should they never play again. And it's the only document as to what overbeat sounds and looks like live (unless you get your hands on the German t.v. footage from '66). The CD is enhanced with videos from the comeback show They are simply stellar.
A major disappointment.......2000-11-29
What a shame. When The Monks performed this live in 1999, they hadnt played together in 30 years. Most of them looked to be nearing social security age and with all that in mind, they played admirably well and gave it 100% (and were delightfully gracious to their audience, young bands take note!).
Unfortunately, this album does not even approach the magic of that performance, the original album or the wonderfully packaged original demos that came out last year. This album lacks energy, drive and conviction. What it sounds like is exactly what is is, a group of rusty players who are giving it their all for an adoring crowd, but knowing full well that they arent where they were. For a live event this is a fine. But do we need a record of it? Making matters worse is the album is so overdone with blatanly obvious (almost laughably obvious) after-the-fact studio-fix-ups that any life that was initially captured on tape sounds laborously recreated and ultimately stiff.
With the other two superior Monk releases available (albeit hard to find) this is a rotten introduction to the band, and of little interest to the casual listener. I guess it's for die hard fans and completists. But it really does not serve the memory of the band well. They sound like, dare I say, an oldies act (the packaging does not help this cause either).
A pity that this is possibly the final document of The Monks. But I suppose it was worth a try.
The Monks are Back!.......2000-11-10
This is a great opportunity to hear this legendary group live...It is even rougher sounding than "Black Monk Time" and even the '65 demos! Of course that's all the charm of the group....Great videos on the enhanced track as well...
The Monks ROCK!..........2000-11-09
They are definitely one of the best of a dying breed of rock bands that played with heart, soul and passion. This is more than a live CD of some band from the 60s playing again after their heyday just for the money. The Monks were ex-GIs who got together and played for the LOVE of it. Thoughtful, rockin' songs with interesting musical touches permeate their sound. American Records put out a compilation of their earlier work, a few years ago, and now that seems to be out of print or something. So this winds up being one of the few albums available that showcases their unique sound and intentionally short career (or kinda like a live best of). What's cool about this CD is that it contains a bonus computer Enhanced video of them playing some songs at 1999's Cavestomp bash in NYC. So if you like your Rock N Roll well played, smart and rockin' then I recommend this CD.
P.S.- If you loved the Stooges or the MC5 check these guys out.

Album Description
Originally formed in San Jose, CA in 1964 and officially breaking up in March 1970, Chocolate Watchband is back. Today C.W.B. are considered both internationally and historically amongst the foremost of all American garage bands from that era. Releasing only 3 albums altogether under the supervision of producer/songwriter guru Ed Cobb in 1967, 1968 and 1969, C.W.B. are more popular and collectible today than ever. This live release includes CD-ROM video footage of CWB performing 'Sittin' There Standin', 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue', 'Let 's Talk About Girls' and an interview with C.W.B. leader David Aguilar. Recorded live at the Westbeth Theatre Centre NYC Nov. 6th 1999. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.
Customer Reviews:
Chocolate Watchband - 'At The Love-In Live' (Roir).......2003-12-10
A lot of you probably don't even remember the CWB.They were a west coast five piece that existed between 1965-68,releasing three worthy lp's.Apparently, the band had reunited on November 6,1999 for a show at the Westbeth Theater in New York City. From what I could tell, there appears to be three original members-vocalist David Aguilar, bassist Bill Flores and drummer Gary Andrijasevich.Best described as charismatic garage rock;sort of like a Stones wanna be.Most happening tracks were "Don't Need Your Loving","Are You Gonna Be There?",the Dylan cover "It's All Over Now Baby Blue",their anthem "I'm Not Like Everyone Else","Misty Lane","Sweet Young Thing"(my personal favorite Chocolate Watchband tune)and "I'm Moving On".Not sure if this was a one-off gig reunion or not,but I don't think it was. Will appeal to fans of the Standells,Kingsmen,Strawberry Alarm Clock,Music Machine and the Flamin' Groovies.Recommended.
Psychedelia...circa...19....99!!!??.......2003-03-27
I must admit when I ordered this CD I thought I was getting a rare live recording from the classic psychedelic era...1967 or so. When I opened it and found out it was recorded in 1999 I was bummed! But, I figured I'd give it a chance. And am I glad I did! The "new" Chocolate Watchband can ROCK! These guys...all 50-ish or so by now sound like a bunch of 20-somethings just rockin' out and having a great time! This CD proves that just because you get older doesn't mean you can't SOUND young! The music is tight and powerful and has that "60's" sound...But, unlike many of the recordings from 30+ years ago this one has punch! The band just sounds so fresh it's really an exciting find to add to my collection. "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In)" may be 35 years old but it sure sounds as fresh as anything else from that period. Not dated one bit! If you like the "garage-psychedelic-punk" sound, also check out "Nuggets" box set for other little-known bands (13th Floor Elevators, The Sonics, Balloon Farm, Lollipop Shoppe, Love etc...). As far as Chocolate Watchband goes...time sure hasn't hurt them! BUY IT and TURN IT UP! See you at the "LOVE-IN!"

Standells - 'Ban This! Live From Cavestomp!' (Varese).......2005-04-16
Until I just happen to see this release in a store,I never would've believed this band would EVER reunite. This may've have been a one-off reunion,I'm not sure.Either way,'Ban This!' was recorded at Westbeth Theatre in NYC on November 7,1999.The sound quality is top notch and the setlist couldn't be better.Line-up includes three out of four original members,Dick Dodd-drums&lead vocals,Larry Tamblyn-organ&vocals,Tony Valentino-guitar&and vocals with stand-in Peter Stuart-bass&vocals.Thirteen cuts with the best being "Why Pick On Me?","Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White",the upbeat "Barracuda","Mr.Nobody","Try It" and their only ever hit the unforgetable "Dirty Water".Very nice CD.During the set Dodd tells the crowd of how The Standell's career was forced to end rather quickly due to all the controversy surrounding the song "Dirty Water".To all them no lifers that tried to ruin fan's good times back then,GET A LIFE,NIMROD!Timeless garage rock.Truly fun to listen to.Highly recomended.
Buy This!.......2001-02-21
This is certainly not just a one-off reunion album with the Standells out looking just for bucks. The band plays with passion, solely for the love of the music. Obviously, this isn't gonna sell enough copies to get these guys out of their day jobs.
But what an album. Easily one of the best albums by a sixties band since that decade. Further, it's a better live album than anything the Stones have ever released and they've had numerous opportunities to capture a decent live set.
Dick Dodd's voice has changed, but the rest of this album sounds like it oozed out of Pandora's Box circa '66. Tony Valentino runs amock on his fuzz guitar, a veritable Guitarzan loose in the jungle. Tamblyn's organ work is simply ravishing. Not quite as ferocious as the Monks live album, LET'S START A BEAT, this still will make you wish you had attended the '99 show where both bands knocked out their sets.
Ban this? Hardly. Buy this!
